On a gaming computer this game freezes and shuts down
I'm a big fan of other Wolverine titles, but this was very disappointing. The stability of the game is, quite simply, unacceptable. I bought it this week. Played about 10 hours. Uninstalled today. Constant crashes. Look at Gary's other fine titles. I regret this purchase.
If you're into sports sims, this is a very good one. Lots of stats and quite addictive.
This game is a lot of fun but it crashes way to much. I had a similar issue with draft day sports college basketball 14 and its unbelievable that after 5 years they still haven't been able to fix the crashes. I'll give this a good rating if they ever fix the crashes.
Wow...
As rough and unpolished as this game is (compared to other established sports management games), the engine and flow of action is by far the best basketball sim experience i've ever had.
Don't get me wrong, there is a LOT of things that can be improved upon with the user interface and presentation and things 'n tweaks under the hood, for instance lack of comparing players, lack of obvious hyperlinking to make life simple, better layout and i/o on 2d and gamecast screens (Devs, I will try my best to outline what could be improved upon in my opinion, in a future discussion on the forum)...
BUT
The "Flow "of the game is so damn believable! I can feel the momentum shifts, hot/cold streaks, intuitive proper expected flow like turnovers that lead to uncontested shots/dunks and believable offensive putbacks... Things that are just non-existant in other bb managerial sims at least imo and experiences.
Modding to real teams/players/logos/etc takes a bit of effort, but it all is such a rewarding experience to marry with this engine. Worth the time! My only gripe is it's quite a bit of a chore to manually edit the databases for 2018-19.. and I hope the community is working hard on that (I don't see much of a sign of this though.. as a lot of older users seem to be importing years old gfx and relying on the dev's updated db). Please, Wolverine Studios, release an up to date roster db and I will continue to support this as the best bb sim for PC!
Thank you for turning my tongue-in-cheek impulse buy into feeling like I stumbled across the best hidden basketball gem of all time!
I got 2017 and figured that 2018 would add more option and streamline things. Really isn't any different than 17 but cost $15 more.
The BEST Basket managergame. So many options. Great work
BEST BASKETBALL MANAGER GAME ALL TIME
I've never written a review in Steam, but thought I'd do it for this game, because it really deserves it. I can't believe there are almost no reviews about it!
To begin with - I love Basketball GM games, and I think I've tried almost everything that has been out there for the past +20 years, inside or outside of Steam: Greek games, Italian games, Spanish games, American games, everything under the sun. Without hesitation, I'd place this within top 2 or 3 Basketball GM games ever.
PROS
- For those GM aficionados who have tried most of modern GM incarnations, you all know how bloated and slow they can be when moving forward. DDS: PB2018, on the other hand, FLIES. I can make one season in 30-45 minutes, including all the pre-season period. Now go and try to do the same in another modern Basketball GM game, aside from Fast Break Pro Basketball 3, nothing comes close. This is probably the number 1 reason why I rank it so highly.
- The Draft itself is FUN, I always look forward to it, the workout period, all the trade drama in between, etc.
- The Almanac feature is superb, and I love it how the game stores the history of top scorers, etc, for any given team.
- Player progression feels realistic, though for some reason players drafted in the 2nd round never seem to be in the spotlight
- People seem to like the ability to 'connect' with your saved games from the 'Draft Day Sports: College Basketball' iteration of games, I've never tried those but I'll probably check them out next.
- One of the few Basketball GM games where the community is quite active (check Wolverine Studios website and their forums)
- Led the Utah Jazz to NBA victory in the early 2030s and built a successful dynasty, that alone is worth the price of the game.
CONS
- I'd love to see a bit more of 'global' presence outside of the main US tournaments or some European League which doesn't have the real format and somehow I've never been able to make work properly. Something like the ability to see a World Cup/Olympic Games every 4 years, and regional (FIBA Americas, European...) national team championships, and for the best players from each region to be eligible for the draft or free agency. No need to make the game bloated with simulations of leagues outside the US, just having national team championships and information of each event would be really cool and just about make it the only other game I want to take to my grave together with Championship Manager 01/02.
- It takes a bit to get used to the convoluted interface, it can be streamlined a bit, for those with little to no patience they may move on to the next thing quite quickly.
- It would be cool to be able to offer block trades, i.e. select one or two or many players you wish to trade away and get offers for them.
I trust Wolverine Studios will keep working on this game and make the next version even better!!
I got this to play as a historical sim game using real players from the NBA. It was pretty easy to mod to do that although I can't figure out how to sim quickly through games. It doesn't have the extensive customization I am used to with Out of The Park Baseball but as the only game of this kind I can find for basketball it is passable if not brilliant. Although I must say the UI is horrible and really needs improvement.
If you like Manager/GM/Head Coach text based games, you are treated to a plethora of gaming choices in Soccer, Football, Hockey, and Baseball - heck, I've even seen them for Rugby and Australian Rules Football! With Draft Day Sports: Pro Basketball 2018, Wolverine Studios gives you a chance to manage Pro Basketball teams, as well.
The game gives you many choices in what kind of league you wish to play, historical, fictional, sole GM, multiple human GMs, etc. You can customize league size and use D-Leagues and Euro Leagues, as well if you wish. You are also given plenty of latitude over how the finances of you league work: salary cap, luxury tax, and more. Want high school players to be able to leap right into the league? No problem- just click a button!
Want to just be the GM and not have to worry about head coach duties? Click a button!
Want to work on the ref during the game a bit to try to influence a call? Hey, you can do that, too. In fact, you cna even yell at them! Now, who doesn't want to be able to yell at a ref now and then? Don't lie..
An easy to follow, simple graphic representation of the game allows you to somewhat closely watch a game progress. You can speed the game clock up to the point where a game takes 1-2 real life minutes to play or just sim all the games and breeze right through them.
If your thing is just being the GM, turn on the option to let AI manage everything for human teams and you can fly through a season very rapidly. Then, hire, fire or extend your coaches' contracts, nerd out on the drafts, contracts, and trades, and whiz through another season - the game really lets you approach a league from many angles.
You can also assign priorities to which part of the US and world you want your scouts to concentrate on. The number and detail of reports you receive throughout the season depends on how many scouting points you assign to each region.
Sounding good so far right? Yep, it really has a solid conceptual foundation going on -
BUT...
BUT...
BUT...
Oh, the omissions and bugs...sigh...
First, some omissions:
You can customize the names of all the teams you create but there are no generic logos to use.
You can customize the colors for your teams but unless you pick the few colors used in the small choice of generic arena floors, they won't match the floor you play on.
(It seems like a little more work could have produced generic floors and logos which could then allow you to apply color choice in the same way you can assign team primary and secondary colors to uniforms.)
You can customize the names of your League, Conference and Divisions, but you can not dictate which team plays in which Conference or Division.
You can view Free Agents and sort OVERALL rating but you can not sort a Draft by OVERALL rating. And neither is sortable by POTENTIAL rating.
The omissions aren't game killers; they are just head scratchers. But the bugs...
Envision yourself taking a couple of hours setting up a fictional league, conducting the initial fantasy draft and embarking on a journey throughout an entire season. You play 82 games, deal with injuries, hurt feelings because of a perceived lack of playing time, nosey reporters demanmding comments on players, negotiating contract extensions, set or change line-ups, re-evaluating how well some players do ro do not play together (which you can easily see with the line-up tracker), call up a 2-way contract player from your D League when your team is hit with a few injuries then send him back down once everyone heals, watch your guys play in the All-Star game and perhaps even win the Dunk or 3 Point Shooting Contest, get to the playoffs and maybe even win them, fire a coach who just doesn't seem to have what it takes, watch the draft lottery unfold to see which lucky team gets the nmuber 1 pick, watch the sports show to see who is named MVP and who garners other awards, then...
...you press CONTINUE to advance towards the new year and you get a fatal error. You get booted to the dekstop and no matter how many times you reload, you get that same error. An error which prevents you from continuing cyberlife with you new favorite fictional team. You flat out can not get to the next season no matter what you do.
While it doesn't happen every time, it has happened in 67% of the leagues I have made. I simply can not progress to the second season because of that damned error.
So, you gamely press on and decide to make a new league and try again...
After setting up the league rules, you start naming your teams. To do this, you must edit the default names. After typing in 32 Team Abbreviations, 32 Team Cities, and 31 Team Nickanmes, you accidentally try to exit the final Team Nickname box when it has no alpanumeric characters in it: CRASH TO DESKTOP - no save possible. Because throughout the entire league creation process, you can not save your work. Crap - another hour wasted!
Infrequently you will encounter other CTDs, as well, but they simply require you to reload your save game to continue on towards Basketball GM and Managerial bliss. However, the 2 bugs mentioned above produce head banging frustration over and over.
This game is so tantalizingly good. It offers an immense amount of detail and fun.
But the bugs...
My advice is to follow the game on Steam and watch the dev's forums at their wolverinestudios.com website. Especially if they solve the league killing bug, the game is worthy of your dollars.
Gary is active in the forums so there is hope they will isolate and resolve whatever bug is preventing you from advancing to the second year.
And a note on that: the Leagues in which I made it to the second season have never failed to progress to subsequent years. So, if you are willing to potentially put up with a large amount of wasted time, buy the game now. You WILL be able to end up with a playable multi-season league - it just may take a long time over several attempts to do it.
FINAL (but changeable) VERDICT: great concept but wait til bug is fixed to buy it.
