a very cool experimental game. i booted up the game expecting to invest a lot of time in battle with leveling, but i was pleasantly surprised. its more of a relaxing and heart-felt experience. the main story is short but has many different routes/dialogue options you can explore. super fun and colorful set of characters with silly voices, and a fresh & interesting approach to indie rpgs that i really enjoyed.
If you're a fan of more surreal gaming experiences with unique tones and fun writing, this is a great option. Objectively there's not a lot to it, you just wander around a few areas and talk to various monsters until you've completed enough events to end the game, but there's just something so intriguing about it that keeps you coming back for more glimpses of this world.
The garden is small (only a few areas) but there are a lot of characters and finding everything does take a bit of dedication. Different choices actually lead to fairly different scenes/outcomes, it makes every playthrough feel fresh despite their short run time. $5 is a pretty fair price for what it offers imo.
Fun little game that took about 30 minutes. I don't know why, but none of the achievements triggered for me. Ahh well, I'll just say that it was about the experience.
Short and charming, with some symbolism and probably a deeper message behind it. One playthrough takes less than an hours, but the game is supposed to be played multiple times for it offers lots of branching decisions. Don't expect any gameplay besides walking around, interacting and talking.
Recommended if you like to talk to lots of different characters which have their different traits and quirks, and if you like to explore the options in multiple playthroughs.
Not totally my kind of game, but I'm sure many people loving Undertale would like this one, too. Of course it doesn't compete - don't start this game with those expectations.
I've had a lot of fun with this charming little game. This is exactly the kind of indie game I like.
Monster Garden is garish and creepy. When I first started playing, I wanted to stop because it made me feel uncomfortable, not in a bad way though. But because I heard that the playthroughs were so short, I decided to keep playing. The more I played, the more I wanted to see, I wanted to figure out more about what this game was and what it was saying. I still felt uncomfortable playing it, but I started to really like it as well. It became almost calming to play. I won't say the game was perfect, it had some bugs and in some places it was a bit overwritten. It can be a little tedious to get all the endings, but it was able to stay fresh through all the playthroughs I did, probably because it was a hard game to acclimatise to. When finishing the whole game, there are still a lot of questions that go unanswered and a lot of loose strings left hanging, but this feels like it's intended to keep you still a little bit interested in the world. The music was good, the story was interesting and each playthrough gave you something new. Even with its flaws I found charm. The best way to describe this game is found in the game itself, '...both beautiful and deeply unsettling.' I really liked it, but you may want to avoid it if you don't like weird, short indie games.
The perfect chill-out game.
As some have stated, you could rush through the game in 30 minutes, but you'd be missing out on what the game is all about. Instead, take time to enjoy the music, chat with some quirky characters, and maybe even find a few secrets along the way. There was one particular level that had multiple branching paths. This made me want to play through the game again and again with different characters to see the complete story.
Monster Garden is a quirky non-violent adventure with a colorful cast, and dialogue that often made it hard to tell if what's being said is deep or just absurd.
Unique enough that I find this game hard to compare to anything that I've played. It had some Undertale vibes at times, but mostly it's a game about... acceptance?
Very short, but I ended up replaying it several times to see the various character endings.
Recommended if you like quirky games.
A wonderful healing game that I played with my 3-yo. They really enjoyed it and wanted to play it again and again and again. A scene near the end brought me to tears. It really is a wholesome experience, but in a constructive, confrontative way.
I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Started the game expecting some chill and funny adventures. Ends up with a chill, funny, and thought-provoking experience. The music was fantastic too!
Monster Garden is short but offers plenty of reasons to play through multiple times. I played through 3 times, meeting new characters each time with unique personalities. The character designs are creative and the fit the colourful, surreal world they inhabit. The audio is also well done, with chill beats and some excellent sound effects that really give the monsters personality, especially the one monster that likes to ZOOM around.
First of all, awesome soundtrack! I immediately fell in love with the title theme. That being said, even if the game is short, it will make you feel various emotions. For some reason, it felt creepy when meeting the monsters for the first time. Something about them or about what they say that I feel are directed straight at me.
Anyways, definitely a game to play if you want some change of pace. Oh, and I am so pleased to meet Tifa or Time Fairy, and hearing her poem.
Overall the game is fun to play and I'm pretty sure there is some hidden meaning behind the dialogues. Probably some reflection to reality? Not sure.
PS. Is it weird that I imagine Mr. Bobo's voice to be like a high Matthew Mcconaughey?
I found Monster Garden at the Busan Indie Connect Festival. Initially I was hesitant because story-driven, pixel art games are normally not my thing, but I'm glad I gave it a try. Upon putting on the headphones and starting the game, I was transported to a chill place where monsters aren't scary and just wanna hang. Each monster brings its own personality and character flaws to the table, making them relatable like the Booty Biker Boy who wants to pursue dancing instead of biking or just hilariously weird like the pervy hippo that flirts with everyone. Each monster adds a new dialog option, making your choices compound as you go. If I were to change anything in Monster Garden it would be the quality of voice acting and the length of the game; I would like to see the voices rerecorded using a higher quality microphone and I wish the game was a little longer, but overall I loved the music and the experience as a whole.
Tookis and the booty biker boys made my heart soar. A psychedlic romp where you make fast friends. The developer is a real kind dude too, and I think that comes through in the game. I want a monster garden sequel! Where you can tend to your little homies day-in and day-out like Animal Crossing.

This game is about befriending monsters, finding them in dark corners of yourself, and letting them run free... It's about coming to terms with all the ugly, the weird, the slowly-dripping gooishness of your humanity.
Don't go into this game expecting traditional gameplay. It's like a choose-your-own-adventure visual-novel RPG. The choices you make are: where you go, what you touch, who you talk to, and what you say. It'll take a bit of an open mind and an uninhibited imagination to have the most fun with this game.
Be prepared to go from cracking up to cringing in digust to saying "awww" in the same level.
The game is meant to be replayed mutiple times. Each time, your garden might come out a little different (or a lot), based on the characters you've befriended. There is a wide range of characters to meet, like crying bullies, biker boys with cute butts, and the Time Fairy, who has an amazing voice (kudos to the sound team!). Characters like that made the game really /grow/ on me ;)
Oh, and there's also some mystery that might keep you coming back, like... who is "THEM"?? (???)
You could divide a lot of games into two categories; the ones that are big and sprawling and repeat the same patterns over and over to compensate, and those that are short, sweet and have special attention paid to every detail. This is the second kind of game, and is highly recommended to people who are on that Furbus.
Monster Garden consists of three levels, each of which has a different play style, but all of which come down to knowing the personalities of the different monster friends in your party and what effect their dialogue options will have on the monster friends you're trying to meet. To be clear, you can finish this game in a solid twenty minutes, but that won't be enough to understand what you're getting into - the first time I played through I didn't really understand what each of my monster friends' dialogue options would cause and the effects seemed hard to predict, but the more you play through the more you will understand how to use each of the monster friends and how carefully put together each of the interactions are. I would recommend putting in a good 2-3 hours in exploring how many possible endings and subtle touches you can find.
My favorite part was reading the personal diaries of each of the characters. Seems like they don't all write the same way they talk! Another slyly thoughtful detail by the creator.
Monster Garden is a quirky and innocent study of surrealism. You walk through a world that makes sense, not to you as the player, but to the monsters that inhabit it. You quickly learn to go with the flow of the game and to enjoy the slightly confusing and mysterious world of monsters. That is the great achievement of the game. There is a real sense of a vibrant and wild world with characters that long for company, for freedom, for choice and for a good time.
It's a game for players who enjoy a wacky adventure game and don't get frustrated when the story is not spelled out for them, but instead is up for interpretation. It's an enjoyable and unusual little game that makes you want to figure out how to help and befriend all the little monsters of this technicolor world. I can assure you, you haven't played anything like it.
I don't personally care for this title, but for the right folks it would be a delightful afternoon - I'm certain.
Monster Garden reminds me of UnderTale in some parellel universe. Not exactly the same at all, but eerily close in many ways. Each playthrough is about 30 minutes. I've played through twice at this point. The choices you make alter the dialogue significantly. Like UnderTale, there is no artistic cohesion with the characters or world, or really anything for that matter. The dialogue is zany. For example, one particular character named Baby won't stop talking about booties and all kinds of sexual references lol. It was actually pretty funny.
Pros:
+There is controller support even though it's not listed on the store page
+It's cheap, but I doubt you'd get five hours even with achievement hunting (I could be wrong, but this is my guess)
+The dialogue is quite varied and is well done
+Multiple story paths
Cons:
-No artistic cohesion
-Black bars on the sides and no resolution options
-I didn't find the story compelling at all; I was mostly driven via achievements to find all the monsters I could 'friend'
It's mildly interesting in a run-of-the-mill Itch kind of way. If you like the idea of playing a short story to get multiple endings with an UnderTale kind of vibe, I'd say go for it.
This game is dope.
First time you get in you instantly made new friends? How cool is that?
Then you get into these garden thingies, and you explore and make EVEN MORE friends!
Finally as if it wasn't enough, according to your actions you can make DIFFERENT pals! That's right, we are talking interactive story here, so I don't know about y'all but I say this game is well worth the price, and then some!
+1 to what will forever be a fond memory and an all-time treasure.
I've been following this game since the beta. This is the type of game I consider a good example of a good Indie Game. As you play thoughout the game you can feel so much of the developer is in there. It's quirky, adorable, and a good adventure game.
So many different characters that you find along the way, and every one unique. And it's such fun exploration.
I completely recommend this game for a feel good time. Such a good trip.
