Initially leaving their hometown of Hibarigasaki was difficult for You, as he was close friends with a girl who he saw nearly every day after school at the local town lookout. When she discovered that You would be leaving the town, she made him promise to return to marry her and left him with simply a kiss on the forehead to remember her by.

Once You returns to his hometown, he searches for that childhood friend, only to find his previous meet-up location is now fenced-off and abandoned. While out searching, he instead stumbles on a mysterious girl named Mare who carries a scythe and claims to be a Grim Reaper. Now back in his hometown, You starts to rebuild his life, making friends and continuing his search for the girl he made a promise to. Will he eventually find his promised love? Who is this mysterious girl and why does she seem so familiar?

If you're searching a wholesome, sad and purposeful story [like something akin to Clannad, Little Busters or A Sky Full of Stars (Miagete Goran, Yozora no Hoshi o)]... Look elsewhere. Although generally speaking, staying away from this game would benefit everyone (unless you somehow don't mind repetitive comedy, unnecessary nudity, a loli, a blood-related little sister love interest, and things alike).

There's a limit to how much nonsense I can bear with. I did my best to ignore the cringe parts of the game, just so that I could appreciate the good bits (Asuho's and Aoi's routes, although they weren't perfect). You're obligated to finish every route though. There's one route I did not want to play no matter what, so skipping most of the route helped. I was finally going to see the finale of the game, the true route...

...Terrible. This route contradicts the lessons the game expresses within some of the side routes. It also has disgusting aspects in it that made me skip often.

When you try hard enough, you can find value in anything imaginable. That's why I didn't give up on the game and spent 50 hours with it. It certainly has some nice things about it.
But oh my gosh, the bad things overwhelmed me way too hard. I am quite amazed at how awful this game could get.

Worth reading. When the story gets it's act together, it really is great. I read the VN in about 50 hours, it would have been less but it bugged out and I had to replay the Komomo/Kosame routes before I could finish the true route.

What I like:
Most of the routes are good. A couple are excellent.
There are some philosophical moments when you just say "damn, that's deep." That's what kept me hooked.
The graphics are pretty good, though I don't think HD really is the correct term for them.
Definitely a long VN, as I mentioned I clocked in at 50 hours.
The story kept drawing me back. I wanted to know what happened next.
Each route is very different, and covers new ground.
Bang for buck is really good, lots of content for cheap.
Most of the music is really good. The theme for Mare is a favorite of mine.

What I don't like:
Steam cloud doesn't work (note below)
Pacing issues. This VN could have been about 20% shorter, more concise, and have been better for it.
A couple routes don't sit quite right with me. You'll see.
Adult content is not that great, and costs extra. I'd say it's totally optional, but if you're a completionist you'll need it for CGs.
No flowchart-you'll need to skip through the main route multiple times (minor content gets added at some points.)
A bit heavy on the goofiness.
The font is terrible and tiny. There's ways to use Windows Magnifier, but I just played on a big screen.

Other thoughts:

The "Common" route is pretty long, and I'll tell you now that you are going to get tired of hearing "Onii-chan Onii-chan Onii- chaaaaaaan!" She means well, but she is annoying.

I honestly didn't like the True route. It was too heavy handed with the feels, though the twist where the protag gets "help" was kinda neat.

There is an excellent guide that recommends the following route order: Asuho--> Komomo--> Kosame--> Isuzu--> Chinami--> True Route--> Mare Ending. I DEFINITELY endorse this order, even though a couple of the routes may not be your cup of (barley) tea. There's a lot of lore that builds on each route, and you can only unlock the True/Mare endings by finishing all the other routes.

Be aware that Steam Cloud doesn't work with this game-it backs up "/Documents/Favorite/Hoshizora no Memoria" when it should back up "/Documents/Favorite/Hoshizora no Memoria HD" (that's where the HD version puts its saves.) Not a problem if you only use one game rig, but I had to transfer saves since I use different rigs.

Overall, probably an 8/10 and despite it's flaws, Hoshizora no Memoria is going to stick with me for a long time. Maybe even long enough to reach Tanabata.

Komomo is best girl, Mare is best Shinigami.

I'm a bit torn on this one. It has many well-paced emotional segments that almost drove me to tears, but the conherence and quality of the storytelling vary dramatically throughout different parts of the story. I guess a way to enjoy the story more is not expecting this to be a romance story, but instead a story about "light" (for lack of better terms), about emotional intelligence, and about the meaning of family. The story actually shines in these non-romance departments.

Hoshimemo is a heartwarming story with splended production quality and atmosphere, with a bit of supernatural element. The music is seriously good here. This actually reads, looks, and sounds like a typical Yuzusoft moege, with a bit more overarching melodrama, half the amount of sugar, and also way more than double the amount of suspension of disbelief needed. Character-wise, most characters are pretty fleshed out but are also extraordinarily terrible at communicating, yet so much of the plot in some routes depends on miscommunication and teenager angsty...

To be honest, I almost dropped this title after finishing my first route, Minahoshi Asuho's. The chemistry is terrible, and the development and resolution have fairly bad pacing. However, my next route, Hisakaki Komomo's, is pretty good. It has solid chemistry development, intertwining well with the unraveling of a supernatural mystery. The immersiveness of the mystery part is also quite good. Like, the story is kind of obvious, with some small twists dropped here and there, but I still enjoyed it.

On the technical side, the HD version has an uncompromisingly huge window size and uncompromisingly tiny font, which makes it hard to read without a big monitor that can handle the HDness. I recommend getting familiar with Windows Magnifier tool to assist reading (Windows 10's magnifier can be set to only magnify a part of the screen).

I only bought this VN because it was cheap and I saw that it had an absurd long playtime on vndb, I didn't really have high expectations for it and boy was I wrong. The story was really good and the artwork in this game was beautiful especially in Aoi's route and Yume's Route. you have to play all the routes to unlock the ''True Heroine'' considering the length of the routes in this game, your really gonna be in for a long ride.

Some complaints that I have is the drama felt forced especially with Asuho and Aoi it was really hard to read because of how stupid the drama was but it was worth it since the True route was so good, also the game not having a ''skip to next choice option'' really ticked me off because you would literally have to restart everytime you switch to a new route.

Overall this was a nice VN I give it a 7/10, the premise of chasing a childhood girl really hooked me into the game I just had to finish all the routes even if I didn't like it just so I can play the True route. Yume best girl

Compare to the original, this HD version has a better sound system and graphic but:
- It cuts off some important scenes at some point.
- Adult patch must be purchased on Purple Soft's site, not free.
- Font is too tiny and can't fix.
