It keeps crashing every time i open it
I forgot why I got this, It looked bad and I knew it but I still spent my money on this mistake
First, the bad:
1. The game is a really awkward on-rails shooter.
2. Every time you start the game you have to redo the calibration, not horrible, but very tedious.
3. Whenever climbing on to a surface, it is way to common to get stuck in the wall, and struggle to re-attach to it and re-try.
4. For what you get, even $15 is a little overpriced, maybe $10 at most.
That being said, the good:
1. Graphics are nice, and audio is decent. (Unless you have issues like I did, where whenever someone talked it glitched out.)
2. The idea of escaping a prison camp with other apes is interesting.
3. I find gunplay rather fun, the shotgun feels powerful.
Pretty enjoyable VR game, would recommend if you have the money or is on sale.
I don't recommend this. It is cinematic, but the controls are awful. Rather than show off VR freedom, we are restricted.
Played On: HTC Vive
With Crisis on the Planet of the Apes, you will become an ape known only as #139. Captured, branded, and held prisoner in a remote scientific facility due to your observed intelligence, you find yourself surrounded by hostile humans who only wish for your death. There are other apes of similar intellect also being held in captivity. With them, you make your attempted escape by sneaking, shooting, jumping, running, and climbing.
It's clear that the team that ported this title from Playstation VR were blissfully unaware that the HTC Vive has more than just a trackpad when it comes to buttons. Literally every move is performed by pressing down on the trackpads; grabbing to climb, pointing to move, unholstering a weapon, picking up ammo... everything. The only other buttons in use are the one for the menu, so that the game can be paused or exited at will, and the trigger to shoot.
While the game has an overall great presentation in terms of both gameplay and graphics, its biggest hindrance is its abysmal locomotion. To move, you have to point at an outline of an ape, then press the trackpad down while simultaneously moving your arm down to start a swinging motion; you continue moving by using a half-aced natural locomotion, where you move your arm back and forth at your side. The movement only seems to work when it wants to, making it incredibly frustrating during enemy-filled areas.
There's a really enjoyable variety of gun fights, climbing, and stealth areas. The climbing in particular is extremely fun, and deeply immersive thanks to your large, hairy in-game ape arms. They're big enough so that when you look down, they look attached to you; they don't simply stop at the wrist like in so many other virtual reality titles. The shooting is all cover based, and in a fighting area enemies can come at you from any direction, although they do like to spawn in waves. There are only three guns, and one isn't obtained until the very last mission. The foes also lack variety.
It's really a shame that so little care was put into the porting of Crisis on the Planet of the Apes. Aside from the absolutely frustrating locomotion, it's filled with about an hour and a half's worth of enjoyable content. The graphics are some of the most realistic that VR has to offer; you can actually see the fur on your ape buddies. The story, sound, and voice acting also aren't bad. However, the audio seems to have trouble distinguishing which speaker it should be coming through. If you fancy being an ape then give it a shot on sale, but don't say I didn't warn you about the controls.
Rating: 3.0/5.0 - Average, can take it or leave it.

Bad. Just bad. Repetitive, on rails shooter that misses every opporunity to really show off the opportunities that VR presents. A real dissapointment in almost every way apart from some of the voice acting. Try Starseed Gallery, Exorcist VR, Rec Room, or Waltz of the Wizard- anything but this.
(this is new me from 2019 please click and read the whole thing)
OMFG god danm it i just wrote a essay on this new review and it dident save WHEN I CLICKED THE BUTTON NOW THE COMMENTING AND RATING IS BROKEN HOW CAN GAME BRAKE THIS TO *exhales* (just saying that was a joke but the part where i wrote a essay on it)
ok look i am not going to write another essay but here if you couldent tell from my sh** spelling in the past (also the dev msg me and said my spelling was sh** and i agree)
but the game combat controls are just broken and bad and weird to describe it. well take your controller and aim it like a laser pointer like horizontal and hold down the tack pad and press the trigger like your shooting something ya now hold it there for a bit ITS WEIRD am i right like its just so awkward and just why. Now the restrictions it has on you. you cant free roam you on a path way the whole time you have to take cover in combat but the places it gives you. Now thats not a big problem but it takes the life out of the game you know. Now the jumping mechanic now i couldent get it to work but if you can great but i found it stupid a bit because i feel like you needed to get it pin point right on the line to swing your arms and jump but thats my problem but if you dident have it ok we can skip this one.
Now just note if you like the movies don't plays this game this will make you hate the movies more just because they like this person make it now idk if this was made by the people who made the movies but still you make the button crap you make the combat crap now for the story idk because i did not finish it well because the game did not work for me but to the dev of this game in the future don't make any games like this and if you do have games like this FIX THEM please for the love of god people will be proud of you they even might just hug you.
While the movement control choice is horrible and awkward, and while there are a few game breaking bugs, the gameplay is overall enjoyable and the graphics are OK. I really enjoyed monkeying around as an intelligent ape! I recommend it but the overall production could have been done better.
Review update!
After getting an error at startup, the developers helped me to fix the problem.
Pros:
I finished the game without any other errors and the game runs smooth.
The graphics are amazing and the immersion is very high, if you want to show someone VR, you should do that, but beware the controls.
It is great to be an ape and shoot soldiers with one hand, while hanging on a rope with the other.
Neutral:
The game is very short, I finished it under 1,5h.
There is practically no story.
Cons:
The controls sometimes feel buggy. Pointing or grabbing at things.
Walking is terrible, you should use fulllocomotion on the next title.
Would be way better, if you can rotated your VR-Character without moving your non-VR-Body.
Overall, I recommend this game and I’m exited to see, what the next VR – Title will be.
The first thing you are going to kill here ...is the fun.
One of the worst gameplay in VR Games that I ever played.
I have to recognize that the graphics have good potential, but that´s it.
If you want a quick review, the game is boring, the controls are annoying for many reasons, and there are mechanics that are also Boring & annoying at the same time.
One great example...the most basic action, walking, is made by Pointing to a fixed location (there is no free movement walking in the game), then you have to click with trigger, wait for a second (yes), point to the floor, and only after that wave your arms until you reach the objective, then, you are going to point to another location and start all over.
That´s it...you are going to kill the fun just by walking!!!
But there is some climbing moments, and some shootings too.
The shooting part have also a nice set of annoying controls, you have to keep the trigger pressed to keep the gun in your hand all the time, and then shoot with the trackpad...I´m not sure why, but it seems that developers didn´t understood the idea to use the trigger buttons as...triggers.
The AI sucks...a lot, the shooting is just covering and shooting the enemies when they rise their heads out of cover...then you advance ...and there is a story in between, and people insulting you to add more realism.
Maybe developers could fix all these things in the future, but for now, I decided to refund the game.
A really solid shooter, with a bit of story. Could be longer, but fine for the £7 ish I paid for it.
Love the cover mechanic with grabbing onto the scenery.

I made a video review playthrough thingy here :

Really fun and good quality probably about an hour to two hours max but you will enjoy every bit of it!
No free movement. Somewhat fun movement at times (climbing, swinging), but locked into set linear script on the ground. Also, hard to move, or switch positions quickly, on the ground. I also kept getting warnings my head was inside one object or another. Really wanted to like this one too!
The first 10 minutes are the best part, after the tutorial. Little things like having the guards looks at you while threatening you, having the other apes communicate with you and having to respond back by beating your chest, that type of stuff is really cool and makes you sympathize with the character you are embodying.
Once that is over, the game shifts into an on-rails shooter. The movement mechanics would be ok, if you did not have to constantly point at the silhouette to indicate when you want to start the swinging locomotion. The scale of everything is too thick and wide. You feel like you're floating a foot and a half above the air, and your ape friends are slightly floating about an inch or two as well. Gun play is terrible. You use the trigger to hold guns, and the touchpad to shoot. You have to continue to hold the trigger, otherwise the gun falls. Makes the game really awkward for precise aiming, and my hand got cramped playing with such awful design. Climbing is fun but also a bit imprecise, as your in-game ape hands do not match up to your outer world hands, so sometimes, you may feel like you are going to accurately grab onto a ledge/pipe/etc but your in game hands over reach and you fall. It's evident it's a PSVR port, because roomscale is not thought out. The cover mechanic means grabbing onto an object like a wall or box and pulling your camera view around to take cover, instead of simply ducking and moving into cover with your physical body. And then there is the issue of the game auto turning the camera while climbing towards the end of the game, even with the peripheral blinders, it causes motion sickness and made me really not want to continue.
It's a cool tie in to the movie, and actually one of the better VR experiences released for a movie but still not a recommendation for more than a few dollars.
Absolutely worth the price. The controls are awkward at times, but this is an above average experience/game in VR. It displays the unique potential of VR games to offer what a traditional game could never do. Playing an ape is a strange experience that really works to make the game even better than a run-of-the-mill fps shooter.
Unfortunately, they released at the same time as one of the most anticipated VR ports ever, so this could get overlooked. I would, however, recommend to everyone to get this game, especially for the reasonable price.
uhm this was a diffi ult one to grade. i was enjoying myuself for a bit until there were frequent glitches that caused me to restart missions and or not be able to finish them. i got to the pipe climbing and kept glitching once i exited the building.
pros: very good climbing physics. graphics are pretty damn good. immersion felt great !
cons: glitches galore, walking was god aweful.
ill reccomend it for the time being only because of the sale price but i have to get a refund cause i cant progress
Movement option is terrible and gunplay is awkward. This is a straight PSVR port and it shows, which is unfortunate because the game has a great presentation. It's very intimidating when you get shouted at by life like guards in VR. I would honestly prefer this experience without the awful moving and shooting if it just had a theater like mode were you just watch everything happen around you, without the immersion getting ruined by the movement and shooting. I couldn't even finish it because I got too tired of the frequent cover shooting. This experience is only worth it for $5 or less.
fix the movement, try gorns style or sprint vector mechanics
have an option to remove the (anti nasuea) shrinking image
gun mechanics is meh, trigger for fire, best use grip to grab
if fixed^
this will be perfect!
It is a good game but....
!. It needs to swap the grip/wals button with the trigger button.
2. walking is smilar to Bravo team. it would be great if we have more freedom to walk
3. Need to shoot with the trigger button instead of the thumbpad button.
4. Need to be able to grip a rifle with 2 hands instead of one.
On the PSVR the buttons are different than on the vive. ( shoot = trigger, walk = thumbpad)
Graphics are great and audio is good
If you're a fan of TPOTA series this is Definitely a must have experience! The Apes look great, the story is interesting, and the game-play is fun. The environment is immersive, dark, and scary. This VR experience tries to do something a little different and it takes a moment to get to used to, despite the games length and a few glitches we really enjoyed kicking some human A##!. We are looking forward to future updates and hope the developers have some intriguing plans for this game.
