Beast Quest

A furry flop

Beast Quest is a mediocre fantasy adventure that fails to live up to its potential, leaving players disappointed with its lacklustre execution. Despite the promising premise of battling mythical creatures and saving the kingdom, the game falls flat in various key areas, making it a forgettable and frustrating experience.

Graphics and Artwork:
While Beast Quest's graphics are passable, they lack the polish and attention to detail expected in modern games. The environments feel bland and repetitive, and the character designs lack creativity, often resembling generic fantasy archetypes. This lack of visual diversity contributes to a dull and uninspiring game world.

Gameplay Mechanics:
One of the most significant shortcomings of Beast Quest lies in its gameplay mechanics. Combat is overly simplistic, relying on repetitive button-mashing without any strategic depth or complexity. The lack of varied moves and combos quickly makes encounters feel tedious and unengaging. Additionally, the clunky controls and unresponsive actions lead to frustrating moments during critical battles.

Storyline and Characters:
The game's storyline is formulaic and fails to stand out in the saturated fantasy genre. Players take on the role of a forgettable hero, lacking any discernible personality or development. The supporting characters are equally forgettable, offering little emotional connection or depth to the narrative. As a result, the game fails to create any investment in the fate of the kingdom or its inhabitants.

Exploration of the World:
Exploring Beast Quests's world falls way short of providing a immersive and enjoyable experience. The world feels sparse and lacking in meaningful content, making exploration a monotonous affair. The absence of interactive elements and interesting side quests leaves players with a sense of aimlessness, diminishing the potential enjoyment of exploring the game world.

Replay value and Content:
The lack of replay value in Beast Quest is evident as there is little incentive to revisit the game after completing the main storyline. The limited content, coupled with the absence of meaningful choices and alternate paths, diminishes any desire to replay the game or invest additional time in it.

Overall, Beast Quest is a disappointing attempt at creating an engaging fantasy adventure. With its lacklustre graphics, shallow gameplay mechanics, forgettable storyline, and lack of replay value, the game struggles to stand out in an already competitive genre. Players seeking a truly immersive and fulfilling fantasy experience may want to look elsewhere for their epic adventure fix.

TLDR: Don't get. Doesn't work. 0/10. Would not play again. Very fun. Got this game whilst drunk. played it and realised that that loading a save would make my game practically (almost entirely) not work. It also has a large amount of bugs that will make you need to Alt + F4 (examples include alt tabing meaning that you would have to beat the game in one siting). Meaning you need a run where no error occur so that you can reach the end of the game. I said that I bet I could 100% it and then started playing the next day. It took 5 hours to get a save that would not break followed by 10 hours to 100%.

I now hold the world record for 100% speedrun for this game.

Beast Quest is a lovely little ambitious game that tried too hard to do too much. The foundation of the game is certainly there- however, it should be tagged as a walking simulator. When you are not walking through your linear path, you are walking over the enemies, as the fights are a walk in the park. As far as subpar games go, this game looked hopeful for about 10 minutes, and then it blended in perfectly with the rest of the bunch.

For a CAD$23 game, I should at the very least be able to make the game full screen and keep my cursor within it, as well as be able to shift+tab. Neither of these 2 things are possible with the lovely game that is Beast Quest. 4/10

Good Ideas Marred by Horrific Technical Issues

Beast Quest is a short High Fantasy game with some very solid gameplay features, but the bugs, glitches, and numerous other technical issues really overshadow any good this title has to offer. While it is by no means a horrible game, it is definitely not something I would recommend (not even to children) because it is so unfathomably broken. As my friend put it, the game is essentially held together by "sweat and duct tape." After 100%ing the game, here are my final thoughts:

Pros

  1. The fact your are rewarded with more item drops and AP (experience points) the better you play the game is a great incentive to actually play the game well rather than just whacking your enemies aimlessly.
  2. (YMMV) - The humor and overall atmosphere of the game hark back to the cheesiness of 1980s & 1990s fantasy cartoons that I used to watch as a child. Its lack of depth and overall simplicity makes it great for young children (about 7-10 y/o) who just like the idea of going on a fantasy adventure without having to slog their way through complex story arcs, politics or magic systems.
  3. The premise behind the bosses also being your "damsels in distress" is a great concept; you still feel like a hero on a mission to save someone or something but it's essentially from themselves.
  4. The skill tree offers some customization options for you to increase Tom's abilities the way that works for your play style.
  5. Multiple difficulty levels.
  6. Decent, atmospheric soundtrack that's unremarkable but at least fits the mood of the game.
  7. The voice acting is passable, but a few characters (such as your wizard mentor) are voiced well.
  8. Having campfires as automatic save points as well as quick travel checkpoints.
  9. The ally summon system is nice for clearing out huge mob packs or knocking off chunks of HP from more difficult foes.

Cons

  1. No matter how you slice or dice it, this game is fundamentally broken on a technical level. Some of the most notable are:

    • God awful collision detection in just about every aspect of the game. Environmental boundaries are sometimes hard to determine, and in some cases, you can literally get stuck on an environmental mesh during battle, leaving you no choice but to reset or flee.
    • Piss poor animations and models that vary too wildly in quality. The townsfolk NPC models are considerably worse than the ones of the primary characters.
    • Textures glitching out and entire areas not rendering at all.
    • Prompts and commands not being responsive even when the appropriate button is pressed.
    • Levitating up certain walls when jumping.
    • Clipping through walls and floors.
    • Sound cutting out way too soon or not playing at all when they should.
    • The quest achievement popping as complete with only about 50% of the quests done instead of 100%.

  2. The platforming is very floaty, and the fact Tom cannot grab onto ledges after jumping is just unacceptable for a game of this kind.
  3. The fact water kills you. This kid is expected to save the world and he can't even swim?
  4. No way to view the map of the immediate area means you're going to be running around in circles a lot trying to find stuff you need because the environments are badly designed and lack enough defining features to tell specific areas apart.
  5. Respawning enemies are unmarked on the minimap after respawning.
  6. Very strange scaling on monsters that turns certain mobs into bullet sponges one moment and then doormats the next (or vice versa).
  7. Most of the side quests are mindless "collect X" tasks that tend to have low quest item drop rates and useless rewards, making them more infuriating than they need to be (especially since this is a singleplayer game). Barely any of them add to the lore, meaning that they solely exist to pad out the game and waste your time.
  8. The dodge mechanics absolutely blow. The game incentivizes you to dodge instead of block because of the bonuses you get upon victory, but the confusingly timed analog dodges (that give you the most bonus points) only serve to frustrate the player because it's not always clear when you're supposed to dodge. I swear that there are times where it should work but doesn't.
  9. Needing a key to open literally every type of chest is very bad by design especially since the developers put way more chests than there are keys. This means that no matter what you do, you will never be able to open all the chests in the game.
  10. [*] YMMV - The story's lack of overall depth and use of tired Fantasy tropes and cliches can definitely come across as boring and uninspired.

Conclusion

Although I did have a little bit of fun with this game, I do not recommend it at all, not unless Torus Games actually fixes the baffling technical issues that (quite literally) cause the game to fall apart at the seams. It definitely does feel like Torus Games had their heart in the right place with this one, but they really needed to go through a proper Q&A team to smooth out the controls and to patch up any glitches and bugs. The state of the "final" game is unacceptable and feels more like an alpha of what could have been a really great High Fantasy kid's game. With the right hands and necessary gameplay tweaks, Torus Games could have given us something in the likes of the Spyro franchise: something that is simple enough for children to enjoy but with just the right amount of challenge to entertain adults.

Beast Quest is not great, but it is solid and nowhere near as terrible as most of the reviews make it out to be.
I'll give it 3 out of 5.

Apparently it's based on the first 4 books of a series meant for children and it shows in the rather simplistic, but appealing story. An evil wizard put a curse on the 4 beats that protect the land and the good wizard sought out a young boy to break their curse, so the beasts can resume protecting the land.

The music is nice and not too loud, the graphics could be better, but are serviceable (e.g. people's eyeballs look a bit weird).
The voice acting isn't superb, but it's not bad either and the game automatically has subtitles set for both cutscenes and normal dialogue (which sadly isn't voiced).

Changing the game's language (e.g. from British to American English) for some reason caused major drops in FPS and very noticeable stuttering.
With British English it ran fine, maybe even a bit too fast since the movement can be a bit awkward and for some reason, the camera shifts whenever you move instead of being statice and letting you move it with the mouse only, but switch to American English caused major stuttering.
Go figure. XD

While it's clear it's aimed more towards being played with a controller (thoughI I couldn't get either of mine to work with the game - one was detected, but no button worked and the other wasn't detected at all), but playable with a mouse and keyboard too.
Be aware you'll need to switch to an option with WASD or the arrows keys before you can select it - e.g. if you want to select easy mode instead of normal, you'll have to move up first and then press Enter.
Switching tabs (Inventory, Quests, and such) works for me via the Š and Đ keys, so I assume it'll work with whatever keys you have to the immediate left of Enter.
It might take a bit of trying, but you'll find the right keys after trying out a few - or you can exit the menu and reopen it to another tab you actually wanted to use.
Sometimes in combat, the game will think you're using a charged attack when you're not, give a bit of pause to your clicks to avoid confusing the game.

The combat itself isn't QTE since you're not prompted to press a key as it appears on the screen like you are in The Wolf Among Us.
It's actually based on observing enemy movements and patterns of attack, but unlike Pharaonic, you're not given absolute freedom of movement in combat.
Instead, it initially looks like a minigame until you figure it out: you attack with the mouse buttons, block with space and you can move left or right with Q and E, or dodge in one direction or the other while blocking and there's F for drinking health potions and G for bravery - it works like mana since you need it to unleash abilities by pressing down Shift and a corresponding number key - bravery is replenished by attacking enemies, but you need potions for health since it doesn't regenerate on its own without using a special ability.
A safe tactic is to keep blocking until you see an opening to attack, since blocking makes sure you don't sustain damage for normal attack it's best to block for a while until all the enemies have made their move, so you can see how they move and what tells - always obvious - they have. Put a few strikes in or use an ability once you have a window to do so and block, if you don't.
If you're dealing with enemies with charged attacks - e.g. spiders glowing red before charging at you - you can block to sustain less damage or better evade by moving left or right.
Enemies never attack all the once, so it's down to observation and patience for the right moment, charging in headlessly won't work here.

Can you die? Yes. Is there a penalty? Yes, you'll lose any keys you were carrying.
You'll find keys randomly in the game world and they unlock chests that give you gold - how much depends on the type of chest.

You won't lose any quest items if you die. However, you'll need to have a quest activated for the quest item to drop - I didn't have a quest for slowing stones activated when I fought what I assume was a goblin and it didn't drop te stone quest item.
If you're confused about where to go, you can press and hold Q outside of combat to see a glowing trail to an objective or quest items.
However, the is very selective about when this will work. E.g. it worked for pointing out where red flowers were, but not for delivering the cookies and by trial and error I figured out I was supposed to give them to the adults in the first town. XD And who in their right mind puts real swords in cookie dough? o.O
Outside combat you can jump with space and click to talk to people or advance dialogue.

Sometimes the controls won't respond right, so some enviromental obstacles, e.g. having to jump on stones in a river - your character can't swim - will be hellish and you'll need a lot of patience and retries to make it and carefully position yourself on each stone before attempting to jump to the next one, similair with chopped trees. Be minful of the direction the character is facing and give the game time to register you want to jump forwrd, not just run ahead and drown or fall. Such sections will be a pain. :(

After nearly every fight you'll earn coins you can use to purchase potions or their upgrades in the first town - how many you can carry or how effective they are - and blue tokens, you can use the tokens to get new skills or upgrade existing ones in the Skills tab and switch their placement in the Combat tab.
Unfortunately, you can't sell any items and I suspect your equipment is only upgraded once a story point is reached, e.g. freeing a cursed beast since I haven't found any weapon upgrades in the forest, the second major area outside the first town.

You'll come across campsites randomly and the game will save once you go near one. You can also use them for fast travel, but for some reason, the game has a somewhat long loading time when you fast travel.
If you think you won't survive the next fight - you can't pause them or run away once you enter them - it's better to use the map to fast travel to a place where there are more easily acessable chests, so you don't lose the keys you've found by dying.

If you fast travel anywhere the enemies in the area will reset and you can fight them again. You can also "farm" for coins and token is small amounts that way.

Sadly nonstory and nonquest NPCs are fairly lifeless and will only repeat a single line of spoken too, though there is some amusing dialogue with allies you'll eventually meet, such as a huntress that will remark that the would-be knight is too short or the good wizard apologizing to a bird he accidentally hit while talking.

Final verdict:
It's not great, but it still is a solid game, if you can forgive its flaws (especially the controls not always cooporating in having to jump to the right place). If you plan to get it, absolutely wait for a sale - I'd say it deserves half of what its normal price is for its faults and lack of polish, 30€ honestly feel overpriced and pompous - such as now since it's 4.50€ until July 21st 2020.

If this game came out between the years 2000 and 2010 it would be acceptable but not these days the voice acting becomes very annoying the graphics are not great.
In the game there are loot chests you will need keys to open them iron key gold key and so on but you can only collect one key at a time annoying to say the least.
Avoid this quest.

I'll tell you this right now, this game is NOT worth $40. I'd understand if this were an Xbox game, but I saw this at Gamestop for the PS4. Everyone looks ugly, combat is clunky and lags a little, I was entirely underwhelmed when I realized I "fell" into a pit as my character slowly slid forward, then suddenly respawned a little further back after taking damage, and don't even get me started on the cheesy voice acting and awful accents.

Fortunately, I've developed a taste for bad games, so I'm enjoying this. I wouldn't recommend it for anyone else, though. Definitely not at full price.

Everything is wrong about this game.
Game interface is irritating, it does not activate controls under cursor but responds on clicking, so when you click it does not actually click on a control under mouse cursor but "clicks" on a currently selected control. For example, when game asks you if you accept a quest, there are two controls displayed Yes and No and Yes is highlighted, and if you click on No, it actually counts Yes because it was highlighted. You have to navigate to No with keyboard and then click or Enter.
Exactly same with all menus, inventory and skills, it all better navigated using keyboard.

Combat is garbage, it feels clunky and like turn based so easily can be manipulated and dodges are completely useless.
Indie looking animations, movement controls and poor dialogues don't add to the game.

Jumping is whole new level of sh*t in this game, once you need to jump over deadly river you die because jumping sucks and grabbing edges is for suckers.

And I was seeing the mouse cursor all the time in game.
