fun game but things pop out way to often when you have limited supplies
For just a few dollars, this is a pretty scary game. I recorded all 3 levels of difficulty cause why not, and there are some pretty interesting mechanics and scare tactics and the harder levels have added encounters it seems.
It's very interesting and worth a look at.
As far as replayability is concerned, I'm never going to touch it again since I've beaten all 3 modes, but I am still glad I checked it out to begin with. It's sort of more of a one off game, or if you do all 3 levels, a 3 off.
Overall, it's decent.
Pretty neat, this should have more recognition.
Nice little survival game. Just keep in mind it can be finished in about 15 minutes or less. There are 3 difficulties, it took me 40 minutes to beat the game on each. Also the game felt a bit random for me, especially when enemies appear. Still I had fun.
great scary game to play
This game will literally not work. I open the game and my screen goes green and staticy and I can't do anything to close out of the game except restart my computer. 0/10 Would not recommend.
Very Scary, worth buying. The jump scares in this game are crazy and i love it, haha freaking bear trap scares make me throw off my head set.
This game is perfect for its price point andhas fantastic atmosphere and a slightly randomized playthrough system to make your game different enough for added replay value. If you want to support small indie developers and you like horror games this game is perfect for you.
An interesting but difficult game (when it wasn't crashing).
The premise of the game is honestly quite refreshing, but the rng is pretty annoying.
From what I've seen from my friends, the biggest takeaway from this game is the unique death animation. That's about it.
Decent experience, 5/10. Worth playing, but not with how crash-prone it is.
Gameplay from when it didn't crash on me :

The good!
- Solid atmosphere, good audio cues (if not a bit too good at telling you exactly what's coming), and generally good at being creepy.
- Nice variety of enemies and events, and seemingly pretty solid randomization and AI. Not perfect, especially with regard to item pickups, but we'll touch on that in a bit.
The bad.
- Items are totally randomized, but each item is necessary to counter a specific threat that can also appear randomly with little notice. It's near impossible to spot what an item is from a distance, so this means you'll spend a lot of time running between them and praying you maintain at least 1 of each lest you face certain death.
- "Running between them" is a bit of a lie, because your intrepid survalist is actually an 800 lbs man that hasn't left his power scooter in decades and has a bum leg. He's capable of sprinting for about 5 seconds. Total, in the game. It recharges so slowly as to be almost irrelevent, unless you like standing around in safe zones for several minutes doing nothing on a regular basis. This is also a problem because one enemy type can only be countered by kiting them with short sprints, meaning all of your precious stamina has to be saved in the event they spawn on you. So, mostly, think Dear Esther in the dark with spoopy noises. And bear traps, because bear traps.
- There's really no indicator of where to go initially. I get that it may be intentional, but you really have no indication that there's *anywhere* to go apart from an also-randomly-spawning npc that directs you. He seems to be pretty generous with his appearances, but I did have a couple attempts where I was already battered and bruised before he showed and gave me any indication of what to do.
THE VERDICT
I'm super on the fence about this one. There's great potential, but in it's current state it plays more like an RNG rage game in the guise of a horror game than an actual survival horror. Maybe I'm just missing something since I was playing pretty quickly on stream. My opinion would flip quickly with a bit of balancing work on the random elements.

I had a lot of fun with this game. Fun game to play in the dark with headphones. Those cursed bear traps kicked my butt for a while. I would recommend being able to map keyboard controls for those who have preferences. Also wish the crossbow would reload faster lol. Great job by the developers.

I put about an hour into the game but only played it for about thirty minutes. i screwed up and set the monitor size wrong and couldn't fix it. Kudos to the dev for the heads up on how to fix my fuck up. Rebelware earned my respect right there.
As for the game itself, I actually had a lot of fun playing it. There's a good amount of tension, though the demon and his legion hordes do seem to pick up on your way too early for my liking. It'd be nice to have a bit of reprieve from time to time to let the unsetteling paranoia something may be following you before your heart starts racing instead of it hitting the moment you enter the pines.
That said, when you know something uis drawing closer, your hair can stand up on end as paranoia kicks in whi;e scanning the ground for whatever is lurking in the shadows. There's also a good deal of balance between you and the enemies, but you really need to pay attention most of the time in order to get even that much of a benefit. These things neak up on you at any angle, you sometimes get an arrow indicating where it/they come from, and if you don't waste your incredibly short stamina meter that doesn't exist in the hud, you can survive the attempted assault.
This isn't a game you're going to pick up and finish real quick Much like Rake and Finding Bigfoot (or Bigfoot as it's called on the Steam store), you need some aurvival instincts and a good portion of luck with the pick-ups to help keep the demon at bay. It may not seem anything major from ther store page at first, but the more you play, the stronger the difficulty becomes which is the real allure of this venture.
think my pants need a clean awhile ago lol this game requires more chapters to keep it going. make a story out of it. one of the best legit scary games I have ever played o-o
UPDATE: You'll be able to find this game on my YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOBvhK4teoo&t=38s
-It's initially terrifying, introducing enemies without much warning... however, I wouldn't mind a build-up to these enemies, like each of them having their own little section to teach us how to deal with them (so that way 'trial and error' isn't an issue) before the big ol' key hunt.
-The sound design is great, no complaints there.
-The story's interesting, but it's a shame I couldn't reach the end... yet.
-The previous version didn't make any real change to the AI based on difficulty. Now, with the newest update on Wed, this has been pretty much resolved.
-I previously commented on the demon's absurd speed not realizing that's just how the game is. I still ran into an issue of the demon popping up right beside me without any warning.
-Thank you developers for actually taking my pleas (and probably others) into consideration. My beef with the traps has come to a close since they stand out more.
-The hands are no longer a literal "drag-me-down", thanks to the developers who are willing to listen. With this said, they'll do this with more effect based on difficulty.
-The Possessed are reduced in speed to give you a fighting chance when you're caught up by the hands or traps. Thank you again developers!
-With the Wednesday update, came a nerf on traps. Because of this, I believe the burning forest is an easier scene, and now it can be made more enjoyable since "Candy Ass" mode allows you to spawn by the key upon death, when you first collect it.
Overall, my opinion has somewhat swayed towards the positives. You have developers who aren't going to cater to those who want a cake-walk horror game; I respect this. Yet they're willing to tweak some things they deem unfair and cheap. A final thank you towards the developers for listening to the vast number of Let's Plays for their game. However, my opinion still stands that this isn't an easy game, and if you cannot aim pretty consistently, you may find yourself dying over and over. So is this game for casuals and crackshots alike? It all comes down to your skill level at aiming a crossbow.
Way too scary! holy s***! This is what scary games should be like. Kept me on the edge at all times. Will be playing it for hours and every difficulty level!
"You've accidentally crashed into a haunted forest. What would possibly go wrong?!"
"Quite a lot, as it turns out. Starved of protection in to the form of flashlight batteries and matchboxes/campfires, and hunted by unimaginable horrors, you must rely on quick thinking as well as the 6 arrows in your crossbow to postpone becoming a meal for the denizens of the woods. But carry on you must as your sweet daughter's life hangs in the balance. One way or another you will see her again soon."
Devil in the Pines is a great little survival horror game by the fledgling studio Rebelware Games. If you have a taste for indie horror, or if you're looking for something not satisfied in the rest of the steam catalog, I'd definitely recommend it. As with any indie horror game, prepare to die a lot before you learn the systems. While consequences in a game like Dark Souls might make you afraid to die, Devil in the Pines makes you afraid to live. Don't worry though, regardless of where you are, you are most assuredly seconds away from death.
