Choose your character, primary ability and enter the gauntlet. The order of the bosses is randomized each time. After defeating a boss you can choose an additional active or passive ability out of four random ones provided that can be rerolled twice for a bit of control over the randomness.
Accumulate and sustain combos to increase your attack damage, perform perfect dodges to recover mana and avoid damage to not die! These things also increase your score. As the abilities given on each run are randomized, you must adapt your playstyle accordingly.

this is underated and hard
Fun and quirky game. Don't let the visuals fool you, if looks better in motion and when you are playing. Planning to play more when I get a chance to play games again!
Good 3rd person boss rush game. Couple characters that you can play as with own unique abilities.
Learning the strategies and how the game works takes couple hours. After that you can play it through with all the other characters and it really is worth the money imo.
Many pros to give. I find the learning curve really fun and you can learn boss fights really well if you put time to it. Bosses all are really unique and interesting. Characters and their multipple abilities gives a lot of replay value as well.
Only cons I'd give is that the 2D art isn't that great.

Full disclosure, I know one of the devs and even helped to game test it a bit.
But with that said, I’m going to try to be as unbiased as I can with this review, this is both for the consumer and the devs.
With this out of the way, let's jump into it.
Grimrush is a bullet hell, boss rush game. There are many different bosses and 3 character classes.
Each character has different abilities and stats, catering to any kind of playstyle. I found myself personally changing classes quite often, depending on what kind of experience I wanted at the time.
The bosses are brutal in a really fun and challenging way, each being pretty different from one another and offering a varied set of challenges, I actually really liked the variety in this game.
The game surprisingly felt really different depending on what combination of class and enemy you’re fighting. Something I really enjoyed was the music, with each different phase of the boss the music would dynamically change and ramp up the energy in the fight, couple that with the insane amount of projectiles on screen and you have a fantastically blood pumping experience.
I found myself muttering the words “just one more try.” Quite often and clicking the restart button before even having a chance to think about it.
Another thing that I found to be a strength to the game is the combo mechanic, if you can manage to go for a considerable amount of time without getting hit, you can get your attack power to raise up to really high amounts.
It feels great knowing that you have +%100 attack combo and this is by far the strongest mechanic in the game, seeing the bosses health drop is incredibly rewarding and it urges you to keep on your toes and pay close attention to your character.
While the game is difficult I would also say it pays off really well. Being able to choose a new ability after defeating a boss is great feeling.
Now for some of the issues, while I enjoyed the game, nothing is perfect.
For the most part the enemies do a really good job of projecting their attacks, warning you that something is coming, this is a strength but sometimes the game has issues communicating exactly what it wants you to do.
For example, there is one monster that requires you to kill all of his minions before he will take damage. I didn’t know this so naturally I just thought it was a bug, it wasn’t and I soon realized what was expected of me, but that was after a few tries.
I would also say that keeping track of the bullets on screen and the energy bars on the bottom right hand of the screen can be a really taxing experience. I often found myself trying to dodge but not being able to because of my lack energy points. While I like this mechanic I think it could have been remedied by a sound effect or on screen filter, communicating that you were low on energy.
With that said though, these were the only two issues I had with the game.
The combat is fluid, the music is good and the characters and bosses are varied, I think $8 is a fair price and I would urge you to at least try the game out.
I’m excited to see what the future holds for this team, for a first game this is pretty good and a nice little distraction from all of the big budget games out there.
I’d give this game a 7/10 score.
Bosses are fair with their tells and you will learn by dying and trying. Best lesson.
Various enemy actions make you consider best options available and good pacing feels fresh. When health bar of the enemy is running low, enemy attacks become overpowering, screen is filled with tiny objects trying to take you down and adrenaline kicks in, it's feels very intriguing. On the surface, graphics seems a bit rough. But on the mechanics side, it seems to be deeply considered set, pushing player one more time.
With low price of this piece, I am giving a strong recommendation for all those who enjoy difficult, but rewarding, experiences.
First impressions:
Grimrush is a boss rush shoot em up with a juicy amount of depth. Bosses have interesting, varied, challenging to avoid attacks. Although they cover a lot of space, all attacks have generous tells, so with some practice, every attack can be dodged reliably. For new players like me, taking a hit isn't too punishing hp-wise. However, hitting the boss without getting hit yourself builds up your combo and gives you a stacking damage buff. A skilled player will narrowly avoid crazy attack patterns, rack up a huge combo, and kill bosses quickly. At that skill level, since you get a score bonus and mana boost for performing a "perfect dodge" right as an attack is about to hit you, you're still incentivized to keep things exciting for yourself.
Boss fights escalate in a very pleasing way as the boss loses health. Their attacks get faster and more complex, the boss will start to mix attacks and get some brand new ones. All of the bosses are cool: an evil mechanical heart surrounded by defenses, a giant electric sea creature, a shadowy lantern-toting wraith: the themes here are memorable. Each boss feels different to fight, and all are fun to fight in their own way. Their movesets are all very fleshed out; for me, the bosses are the highlight of Grimrush.
Each of the 3 player characters has a different playstyle, and you can choose from 3 starting abilities for each, plus one ability (from a random selection of 4) for each boss you defeat that will alter your playstyle further. The bosses themselves are in a different order every time. All of this means that your games will all be different, instead of being stuck on one boss forever and fighting them over and over again as you learn the game or are going for a good score. If you do want to fight one boss over and over again, there is a retry option when you die, although you'll lose score for using it.
The music in Grimrush is a real treat. There's also a cool music effect whenever you perform a perfect dodge, which I love.
All in all, Grimrush has left a very good impression on me, and I want more. Beating the game will be a fun little challenge, but after that I want to really dig in and try to do a masterful run with a good time and score, with tons of perfect dodges and huge combos. If you like shoot em ups like I do, I think you'll enjoy Grimrush too!
