There is no rhyme or reason to how the tiles come to light so you never get to plan on how you want to win a level. Then at level 42, no matter how you set the window or the resolution it hides tiles from you so that no matter what you cannot win. DO. NOT. PLAY. THIS. GAME.
Warning: Asset Flip!
Mahjong Challenge is an asset flip, or what Valve calls a "Fake Game". The "developer" paid for/pirated someone else's Mahjong tile matching example/template/tutorial game, changed the name/reskinned a couple of things, and submitted it to Valve as if it was their own game.
Boogygames Studios have shown a repeat pattern of unethically dumping other people's work onto Steam as a cheap, nasty cash grab, through this account or through closely linked/alt accounts. Here's some examples so you can see for yourself:
- "Case Simulator Weapons and Armors" = Yet Another Case Opener developed by NeraQuam
- "Color By Number - Pixel Draw" = Pixel Art: Color By Number developed by Moana Studio
- "Food Mahjong" = Mahjong Game Engine developed by SmallBigSquare
- "Hidden Object - Food" = Hidden Object Game Template developed by Puppeteer
- "Hidden Object - Tools" = Hidden Object Game Template developed by Puppeteer
- "Loot Collection: Mahjong" = Mahjong Game Engine developed by SmallBigSquare
- "MahJong - Medieval Fantasy" = Mahjong Game Engine developed by SmallBigSquare
- "Pixel Art Monster - Color By Number" = Pixel Art: Color By Number developed by Moana Studio
- "Rainbow Duck" = Switch The Gravity developed by App Advisory
- "Solitaire - Cat Pirate Portrait" = Klondike Solitaire Complete Game Tutorial developed by University of Games

Taking this shovelware seriously as if it was a genuine attempt to make a game, it doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
While there are options to change the resolution for the game, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the game, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The game features somewhat lazy, simplistic "retro" looking 2D graphics, of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.
This looks and feels like a mobile app, but I wasn't able to find it on the app stores. Maybe it was removed, maybe it was rejected by Apple and Google (they do have more rigorous quality standards than Valve does for Steam, after all).
Regardless, for all intents and purposes Mahjong Challenge might as well be a mobile app, it has the same limitations and dumbed down qualities. It's impossible to recommend such a game to PC gamers. We don't spend all this money building gaming rigs so we can pretend they're iPhones and play games that might as well be mobile apps.
These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
The poor quality of this game is reflected by how many people spent time with it. At the time of this review, SteamDB shows the all-time peak player number was only 2 players. This is a remarkably low number, and now, the only player activity occurs once or twice a month, presumably someone loading it up to see what it is then quickly uninstalling it. Considering there's over 120 million gamers on Steam and well over 50,000 games for gamers to choose from, the overwhelming lack of interest in this low quality game is to be expected.
Mahjong Challenge is relatively cheap at $3 USD, but it's not worth it. Given the defects and quality issues with the game, coupled with the unrealistic price, and the questionable ethical nature of the developer and/or their associates (as outlined above), this is impossible to recommend. Because this is the kind of game you can just play for free on mobile phones, it's impossible to recommend anyone should pay money for the same experience on Steam. This is also competing with over 9,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

Fun, quick and easy game for de-stressing! Fun to play quick or make a night of it! Worth getting.
I wouldn't really call this Mahjong. It seems more like picture matching with some tiles inexplicably grayed out while others are playable. Gameplay is a bit boring. In game music and sound sliders not set up well, as clicking the slider doesn't seem to have any effect, but clicking a down arrow to the right of each slider sets it at about 25%. I don't think I can recommend this.
Boring, bland gameplay. Do Not Buy.
The game is cute and adorable. You can change the background/tiles. You gotta be quick playing the levels! There are many, MANY levels. I wish there was more of a challenge to levels or variety of positions to the titles, but otherwise it is a good training game to get back into Mahjong! Thank ya for making this game!!!
Didn't get what this game is about firstly (even though I played mahjong and like it), but then it appears that the game is quite good. It isn't laggy and it has pretty good art.
7/10 for harsh start and bug with music settings
This game is a waste of money. It will not display the tiles on the screen. Some are off the sides where you can't see them. I have tried windowed and not windowed and it makes no difference which I use. Some of the tiles are always just off screen and you can't see or click on them. The only reason why I know they are there is I can see them go by when I hit the randomize button.
DONT'T BUY THIS GAME.
