Fun little strategy game with cool aesthetics. Shame there is no mod support but still a good game.
Great intro to real time strategy games for beginners.
The simple mechanics of the game are intuitive, yet never gets boring. The islands are short stages that last 5-10 minutes each, making for a perfect bite-sized game to play for a bit. This game would be better if there was an island creator mode as well as an endless mode.
This game does so much right that I am genuinely sad that I'm so put off by the flaws. It is essentially a twist on tower defense (a genre I love!) with some light RTS elements that don't rely on micro and CPM mastery (yay!). The missions are delightfully bite-sized, rarely taking more than 3-5 minutes. It has a relatively straightforward -- but enticing and well-done -- system of slightly-more-complicated rock-paper-scissors of units with some slight terrain stuff taken into account. It relies on tactics and not build queues. You never have more than 4-5 units to worry about and they each only have 2-3 actions.
As a dad of twin preschoolers with limited gaming time and often days between gaming sessions (i.e. I forget all the detailed game mechanics) this is seemingly custom tailored just for me!
And yet....my initial love for the game waned. It portrays itself as a "roguelike" but it really isn't and I think that's the fundamental pain point. The runs are way too long, multiple hours to go from start to finish. And, annoyingly, they auto-checkpoint along the way so if you find yourself with a dead-end "build" (all too likely) you can't just "lose" the game and start over and decide "oh, gee, I need to level up my swordsman more next time". You have to delete your save and lose all the unlocks you made.
All of this is made worse because the game introduces new enemies and mechanics in the most brutal way possible: you don't technically fail the entire run. You've just had your best troops perma-killed, gimping your forces, and soft-locking you out of ever making any progress. There is a option to allow "retries" which I consider basically mandatory until you've got several hours under your belt. Just as one example, when enemy boats hit the beach they have a "surge" that will disrupt the formation of pikemen standing on that square. This isn't explained anywhere and the only way you will learn abou it is by making that mistake....which results in all your pikemen being killed. And probably most of the other units on the island, too, given the game actively encourages (virtually requires) you to try to do things with the lowest margin of error possible. Likewise, when some new mystery enemy unit shows up you have no idea whether you need to bring pikemen or archers or swordsmen to deal with them.
This kind of "learn by failing" works well in games with short runs. But...this game doesn't do that? I'm not sure why they adopted ultra-punishing roguelike mechanics but then paired it with a multi-hour campaign and frustrating difficulty spikes. Seriously, you'll be 2+ hours into the run still encountering new enemy types that wipe your forces off the map which means hours of work levelling up units is up in smoke -- without even really an option to grind and get new units or level up your remainders.
The art and atmosphere are great but everything else could use a lot of work. Kind of overpriced.
This is a very fun game, and is defiantly worth buying, and for new players-if you get archers upgrade them or else they suck
I think this game is quite enjoyable with a simple aesthetic. It involves strategy and some good pre-planning before you start every island. The game feels balanced since every troop has their strengths and weaknesses and can counter or be countered by the enemy, so it feels like the player decision and strategy are the most important things to achieve victory.
Hard and Very Hard difficult is quite challenging and can become really frustrating especially if you disable the restart option since it seems you are playing hardcore on very hard.
Had fun playing and walking through steam challenges.
PS: F*** Those Damn Balista Boys, they are OP af and incredibly annoying XDD.
it's fun and cute. but very very repetitive. more of an idle game almost?
Small and simple but not easy to master. Really enjoyable roguelike/ "tower defence" game.
Nice graphics, enjoyable difficulty.
This game is really good and well polished. It's a simple mechanic implemented perfectly and the minimalistic art style is beautiful in it's own way.
Compelling pick-up-and-play strategy game that focuses on simplicity. There's not a _ton_ of depth here, but I got at least 5-6 hours of fun out of it over the course of a single day. It's likely that this is the kind of game you can replay every so often.
very fun enjoyed it a lot just finished the campaign
Nice design. The gameplay consists of a series of short rounds (2-10 min) on randomly generated maps, with some progress and improvements persisted across rounds. It's a great format for casual players. Quite fun to replay several times.
I finished the game in around 4 hours on Normal. I don't replay games right away a lot, but this game might be the exception. Love the art style and the game play is is super fluid and fun. Also a strategy game where it gets much harder as the game goes on and is surprisingly unforgiving.
I do wish there was a little more meta progression between runs, a comprehensive codex, and a former runs log, but all together this game has the sauce. Great buy, especially on discount.
Very pretty but way too short for its price (and limited replayability)
peak storytelling my 9 year old son really loves this game
A very fun little real time strategy (you will PAUSE a lot though) game. It can get challenging, which increases the enjoyment. After completion, you can go back and replay at harder difficulties. Graphics, animations, sounds, controller support are all perfect.
Map designs are hard coded; so they are always the same. There are 30-50 maps you can go through. It would be good to have randomly produced maps to play beside the campaign.
It would also be good if there were multiplayer or co-op support (with again random and bigger maps).
8/10
Why do all the commanders have d*ck-like noses in their portraits?
well crafted, quick pace, challenging combat, but the hope is always there for victory.
It would be cooler if game had more game modes (For example: Endless), more combat move set for units and the number of enemies to increase when increasing the difficulty.
Fookin amaaazing, just needs mods to be perfect xD
It's a super fast-paced strategy game, and if it's too fast for you, just hold space bar a bunch and turn it into a quasi turn based massacre :D
An amazing time killer game. If you're looking for something simple yet engaging: this is the game for you!
This is awesome! A little mini-rts with more depth to it you might expect on the first look. Still very basic and easy to understand and play.
The grafics look cute but with the soundscape and the atmosphere overall it's kinda spooky as soon as every round starts. Especially later on when the enemies get stronger. The skills and effects are also kinda brutal and contraire to the first impression, but everything fits together and the different unit/enemy/weapon/skill types bring with the 3 difficulties you are given replayvalue. For what it is it's a steal on sale and I highly recommend it to rts fans that want something less complicated than wc3 or sc2 sometimes

Good game, but you NEED to add the ability to fast forward. So much of the game is just waiting for things to happen.
Key Features:
- Roguelite
- Minimalist
- Real-time Strategy
Pros:
(+) Don't be fooled by its minimalistic appearance, this game holds a surprising amount of strategic depth. Vikings come in all directions and the islands you defend vary in appearance and terrain. Consider your placements and the troops you and your enemy uses carefully, lest you find yourself surrounded and decimated by the Vikings.
(+) The minimalistic low-poly graphics make this a pleasantly relaxing experience.
Cons:
(-) For a roguelite, it gets repetitive pretty soon, especially when you find out how to optimize the builds and army composition. Archers are overpowered, I swear to God. I managed to finish the game in Normal difficulty without too much of a struggle.
Its a chill RTS game that you can just pick up and play wherever you go. Nothing more, nothing less. Just make sure to keep a watch with you at all times because one can get easily engrossed in this game, telling yourself just one more turn as the clock approaches 12 am.
it gets really fun after you learn how to counter each kind of enemy
Good if you are looking for a polished and straight forward experience that is quite the challenge. I would recommend playing it mobile instead though. Also, only worth a few bucks imho.
This is one of those games where you start playing, and when you know you have to stop, then you say something in the lines of "just one turn more", so you stay another hour.
I recommend it. Easy to understand and fun.
Bad North is my fav game i have over 300 hour on xbox and still full die on hard this game is my game of life, like i love this game fr fr fr i put that on my mama. thats sh*t is fu*king fire love everyone who made this game
This is an incredibly polished game.
Under the cute minimalist artstyle, there's stunning tactical depth. Good command of your troops makes or breaks your defense, and the game gives you lots of fun tools to work with and decisions to make.
What impresses me most, however, is how clever and capable your little soldiers are.
Infantry will pre-emptively shield themselves against archers, and the rearmost soldiers will cover their squad during a retreat.
Pikemen will ready their spears toward chokepoints ahead of time and use them to hold off dozens of enemies.
Archers will opportunistically pause to shoot volleys at enemies en route to new positions.
I love the little guys, and love the game. I think you will too.
It is a fun game and a good way to pass the time. It does have moments thought were the learning curve can be very steep. If you make even one mistake it almost feels like a game over. The good thing is though it does not take long to get back into the game. You can get far into it pretty quickly.
It's all about tactics. Very nice game design, the slow-mo works great. Only criticism is that there's no speed up feature but its really only a couple seconds of your time wasted between waves. Great game.
look like a simple game but very deep strategies and require a right timing to take the action.
the slowmotion when select the troop is a genius idea
10/10
A very cool and cute island defence game. It could use a little bit more tutorial, as I had to google quite a lot, and learning the icons for enemy types off by heart isn't something I managed to master. But the game is really very playable! I switched on the ability to restart a level, which is kinda "easy mode". Getting the balance of promotions right is really tough and it wasn't until my third playthrough that I didn't make huge mistakes like trying to upgrade everyone. Nah, focus on a few core commanders because in those later levels you HAVE to have string troops!
This is an amazing game I love everything about it and the art style is great! Definitely worth the money as I got it on sale
I already played it on epic 'cause it was free there.
Bought it here 'cause, ew, epic.
Awesome gameplay. Hoping for new updates, new items, passives and i hope new friendly and enemy units. Maybe a rougelike/lite gamemode with random maps or kinda endless mode :)
Pretty good game.
Have been looking for similar games to this ever since I finished the campaign for the second time. The art style is unique and the terrain differences in each map help in providing wrinkles to the gameplay and tactics. Those behemoth archers though might be OP and ruin the endgame somewhat. Other than that great game.
I played it on an iPad 5 years ago and wanted to replay it. I love the mood and minimalism of both art and music. It's not very deep in mechanics, but has a thrill of a roguelike game regardless. It would be a great introduction to the genre for those who just getting familiar with it.
A very charming game with intuitive yet comprehensive gameplay. The campaign is short but can be replayed many times. Overall, a fun game to play for a few hours or master over the course of many.
Easy to pick up, hard to master. I have had this game on my list for the longest time and I wish that I would have picked it up much sooner. Man, what a great game.
The game is a little to difficult even on easy mode but is still a good game overall.
Great game! simple yet to understand the mechanics but hard to master. Art style and soundtrack are amazing, would love to see more from this developer.
I love a lot about the game; the islands and SFX especially.
But I simply wasn't having fun because I was frustrated at some of the game's mechanics.
super simple yet makes the gears turn in your head for each interaction and each enemy type that shows up. I recommend this game to those that want to sink a few hours into a strat game
A very fun rougelite, with cartoonish kind of graphics. Becomes more fun as you discover more strategies and start to understand how to build your defense against different types of enemies.
Would be nicer if you could untrain your abhorrent kidnapped lords and force them to be archers instead of redundant pikeman
Very simple yet very versatile game with its wide variety of map designs and enemy types and traits forcing you to constantly change tactics. I wouldn't replace anything but i would probably add a fourth class and some new enemies and items if this game gets updated again i hope.
As an indie game, Bad North: Jotunn Edition punches far above its weight. Its minimalist art style and roguelike elements create a unique and memorable experience. The game's focus on small, personal stories and the emotional impact of losing your soldiers make it a truly special title.
Its such a relaxing tactical game. Love it. Would recommend it repeatedly.
I've been playing since 2018 or 2019 on Xbox and PC. I love the art style and the idea. It's challenging, especially on Hard Difficulty, as you would imagine. Even though I've played it off and on for years it does get repetitive sometimes. Nice concept. Idk if there could be a second game.
I've only played for an hour at this point, but I can see where the game is going. I love the art style and soundtrack. The characters are cute, yet feel compelling within the "harsh" universe. I'm excited to progress.
Im bad at these kind of games, spears are fucking useless until their not.
was fun.
