Leaving a review since I saw it only had 30 which was kinda crazy to me. This game is very relaxing, simple puzzle game. You'll have, say 5 letters on the top and 5 on the left, and use a combination of them to fill spaces on the board until they are all filled. It's simple at first but gets more complicated as you go on. There's also a ton of puzzles to work your way through plus daily puzzles.
It's cheap, fun, and a good way to kill time.
At this point, I've lost track of how long ago I got this game and how long I've played it. I mean, yes, Steam tells me a number of hours, but that's been spread out over almost every day for the last... two years? Maybe more? I've actually lost count.
The reason for that is, this game is a great way to wind down at the end of the day, by way of a clever idea for the kind of puzzle that wouldn't be out of place in a newspaper-- and I mean that as a compliment.
If you want to chill with some intelligent word-puzzles, then I can only sing this game's praises.
Good puzzle game, nothing out of the extraordinary but worth having if you want something quick to play for a round or two. The game mechanic is simple, you create words using letters from a top row and left row. The aim is to fill the box with words. The mechanic however doesn't really evolve from this point from what I can tell, so it really is just a game to play for 5-10 mins. I generally don't feel the urge to keep going after doing one board. I do wish it had achievements though (and I hate that I wish a game had achievements, but oh well).
If you've played other word games like Scrabble or Wordament, this game is worth checking out. Fill 2D grids by selecting letters from intersecting columns and rows. Most of the puzzles are reasonable, but some of the larger or "spicier" ones were incredibly challenging. You'd better know a lot of esoteric 3-letter words or you'll be saying several 4-letter ones.
The dictionary of accepted words appears to match the UK Scrabble word list, but doesn't include all valid US Scrabble words. You may occasionally find a word that you think is valid that it won't accept. I only found one in 13 hours of play - "callout" - a valid US Scrabble word.
The game also lacks some of the niceties of more well-polished games, like achievements, or the ability to run the game windowed. However, it has three new puzzles daily, so unlike many other puzzle games, you can pretty much play it forever.
Sidewords is a solid casual puzzle game with word puzzles of varying sizes and, thus, difficulties. I'm well pleased by there not being any timers or time limits, at least in the basic levels or daily challenges. It would be nice to have some Steam achievements in the game, but not every game has to have them implemented - I just have to remind myself of the fact every now and then. ;)
This game is great for when you have a puzzle itch, but only a few minutes to spare. I agree with the reviewer Tweak that a customizable dictionary would be great. Other than that I really love it.
I like the concept but I'm not happy with real words being excluded from the "dictionary" while a multitude of garbage that is included cheapens the difficulty. There's still value here.
There are a number of potential layers that are absent, too: no in-game ability to customize the "dictionary," no modes that provide specific objectives like completing the whole puzzle with only one word, no timekeeping and leaderboards based upon it, no good tutorial that demonstrates what's allowed (it only presents some rules when you do something wrong, resulting in a lot more difficulty for players who don't try something right because they were never told/shown that it is right).
It can be done better. A lot better, which makes it so difficult not to give it the "thumbs down" on account of the disappointment I experienced for a good while. But nothing else does exactly what this game does for now, so to get in on this goodness this is the place to be.
This game is fun and easy to learn. The game also lets you adjust the size of the window, so you can multitask on the same screen. I bought the game on sale for $1, and if you enjoy word games, it's certainly worth that price. $5 is about a fair price, since you get two games.
Good Game!! You seem to just keep playing trying to beat the levels and time just flies by. Recommend if you enjoy word games/puzzles.
This is a terrific game! It's very fun even though it might seem like it's just a boring word game. I couldn't stop playing for the first three and a half hours. It's a very low price for such a long and very enjoyable game. Do yourself a favor and check it out. The Developers also added a feature where you can make your own word games.
Nice word puzzle game, didn't realize you could slit the boxes without a hint though. I will probably play this more.
Fun little word game. It's nice to have something to kill 5 or 10 minutes. This avid crossword solver approves!
Edit: took me about 10 hours to get the trophies, at which point the only thing to do is dailies. Which should still be about 5 minutes a day every day. Not a bad value.
Probably my favorite puzzle game. It's not overtly hard but definately takes some practice to get into the swing of things. The daily puzzles are great and keep the gameplay fresh. The one complaint I have is that there isn't any background music but that's an easy fix with all the streamable music out there. Totally worth it
Realized I didn't like it just after the refund period was over. It's a nice way to test your vocabulary, but sadly the game doesn't award you for finding long or complicate words that allows you to cover a big part of the grid. Most of the time a lot of small and simple words is the way to go. Although the game says that the combination given in the hints is not the only one possible, filling an entire grid except one tile, then changing words 10 times, without ever being able to finish the grid, makes the experience frustrating. Spending time to solve a puzzle is fun, but spending time looking for the exact correct word among 100 possibilities is not.
An easy to understand concept that lends itself very well as a simple puzzle game, even a little bit of learning thrown in for some obscure, useful words. No worries about running out of content either, thanks to the daily challenges. My only complaint is I wish the dictionary were a bit more accepting. As another reviewer stated, achievements would be a nice addition as well.
Gladly picked this up both on Steam and Android (iOS available too) as it's a nice puzzler at a great price.
A lovely, relaxing puzzle game; really enjoying doing the dailies while slowly working my way through the regular puzzles.
Easy concept to grasp, with open-ended solutions. Two people will almost certainly have different solutions to a puzzle, depending on what words they know and what comes to mind first. Each puzzle is pretty short, and there are different sized daily puzzles to tackle depending on how much time you have available. Even small puzzles can be difficult depending on the letter composition, though.
One complaint I have is that the dictionary isn't very strict in the game. There are a lot of words that feel cheap to use but are pretty useful, and you can get a lot of 3 letter combinations by trial and error until a permittied one comes up that wouldn't be found in most dictionaries. It kind of takes away from the challenge, but it's still a fun experience.
Definitely recommended if you like word games and anagrams.
The in-game puzzles themselves take about 8-10 hours to completely exhaust. The themed sets are great, and I would definitely love to see more of them added in. There's nothing extremely difficult, the hardest puzzles take about 10 minutes to put together. Right now, the puzzles are designed to be relaxing, but it'd be cool to have additional optional goals like using as few words as possible. That way, there's incentive to play older puzzles.
The dailies are fun, and with 3 different board sizes everyday, it makes sure anyone can go into this game anytime and always have something new.
The bonus Quads minigame is fun and worth the money on its own. It's essentially a cross between Boggle and 2048. Even if you have the main game finished, coming back to Quads and trying to beat your high score is a great way to spend time.
One thing I'd like to see is the implementation of Steam workshop. It'd be very cool to create and submit my own puzzle sets, which would be beneficial for people who've completed the main game.
Overall, a relaxing and enjoyable experience (even if it made me hate the letters Y and K just a little bit more.) Definitely worth the $5.
This game is really up my alley. Already addicted.
If you like jumbles, or Scrabble, or any similar games, you will have a lot of fun with this.
The first few puzzles are pretty easy to get you into the strategy of the game, but then the difficulty ramps up.
There are daily puzzles that I'll probably try to keep doing day to day.
Plenty of content for the low price. Definitely recommend.
Only downside is the lack of music, but I just put tunes on in the background.
Certainly very relaxing, and a joy to play as it gets more complex and forces you to get more creative.
