Another example of butchering what makes a genre. This game gets both RTS and RogueLIKE/rogueLITE wrong. Story mode is honestly god awful. Same missions that are either a cakewalk, or a death sentence where no matter how hard you try, you will just get obliterated as all you are given is a capital ship with barely any combat capabilities and a single fighter that can barely provide any fire support, while you are fighting at least 4 ships each more than capable to destroy you alone. And there isn't an option to buy any other ships aside from more fighters taht are barely any help. After dying on one 'easy' mission 4 times i've explored other options, and those missions are straight up filler content. And out of 5-6 playthroughs i had the exact same content and the exact same outcome as the "random" prizes for said missions barely make any difference in your playthrough.
Controls are pretty bad as well. My PC runs much heavier games with ease and when the entire game experiences microstrokes each time i try to use the voice commands it is irritating, not to mention how awkward it is having to stare at my wrist and not at the action while giving commands is honestly bad and disruptive.
From the positives i will say that the action looks smooth and it is nice to zoom in and out to see the action unfold. Too bad i am returning the game as it is more frustrating than enjoyable.
Fun fleet strategy game. Took me until my third try to really start getting into it, but using voice commands certainly improved the experience.
Awesome game! Similar to Battle Groups VR, if you’re familiar with that game. But without the ability to take the driver’s seat of your spaceship like you can in BGVR. I love how you control the space battles in both games.
I completed the campaign on the easy setting in about 6 hours. I kinda took my time, and enjoyed it. There’s three difficulty settings, easy, medium and hard. Most games I’ve completed on one of the difficulty settings, I usually don’t go back and replay it on another difficulty setting. But this game I really like, and I’m gonna replay the campaign on medium next. There’s also a skirmish mode too, but I haven’t tried it yet.
I love this game, and I have no complaints. I would’ve liked to have had the option to control the ships from the captain’s chair like in BGVR, but still a great game without the option. The graphics and sound are amazing. The gameplay is really fun, and I haven’t experienced any bugs, lagging, stuttering or freezing in the game. Everything runs super smooth for me. There’s several ships to unlock as you progress through the game. Also there’s plenty of weapons and armor attachments to unlock and purchase for your ships.
I highly recommend Eternal Starlight to anyone that likes space games. I’d give Eternal Starlight an easy 4/5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from what I’ve played so far. And that rating could very possibly go higher as I play the other modes in game.
Just finished the game under 4 hours on easy. Good game but short. Now will try Endless mode and some Skirmish mode.
Definitely recommended. Just wish for some dlc.
its a pretty good game, it has some issues with ships path plotting where you really have no control over rotation of the ship. but its a good game with decent replayability
How did Steam not recommend this to me before! I cant believe such an amazing game had to be found by chance.
First of all ignore the screenshots, they dont do it justice, I have never been so immersed in a RTS game, it really is like Homeworld, but you are right in the middle of it controlling everything with super intuitive controls. I know I only have 3 hours at the moment, but I know I will keep playing this for endless mode as after thousands of hours in games I have found something really new and special.
Please if you have VR and have ever enjoyed a RTS (especially Homeworld or Sins of a Solar Empire) buy this game!
its a good game, just short, beat it in 3,5hours on easy, you might get 4-5 out of it on harder difficulties.
there is some replayability with unlocking other starterships/loadouts if you are into that sort of thing.
it is compareable to battlegroup vr, its just shorter and a bit more storydriven.
personaly i prefer battlegroup, but i can still recommend this on sale, it is a good game with subsystem targeting, upgrades and unlocks, etc.
Great game especially with the new endless mode. Really very enjoyable. Also the Dev seems to be open to suggestions and is very open to making improvements. I will continue to support this game since it really is a great basic space RTS with rogue lite/like elements dependent on how you select to play it. High recommended from me. One of the top VR experiences so far.
I played through 6 missions on Medium, and hit an abrupt difficulty cliff. 5 pretty easy missions followed by near-instant death.
Fine, I said, it's a Roguelike. I'll try again. Only to be presented with precisely the same missions - with the same result. 5 easy missions, and then death. This completely killed any interest in trying a 3rd run.
The fixed nature of the missions means it's not really a Roguelike. You're playing the same campaign, and the outcome's going to be pretty much the same. The only difference is what random loot (weapons, systems) you find along the way, and that doesn't change things *that* much, because the loot is low-power stuff that barely improves your ship. Hence the death in mission 6.
It feels like there's potential there, since there's a store with a wide range of equipment. Which would be cool, except that the store is locked for all but mission 1, when you don't have any money to buy anything.
The controls are generally fairly decent, but still a little erratic. Mostly it's that clicking to activate your special weapons sometimes just fails inexplicably. Which is generally OK because you're in slow-time mode when you're trying to do this, so the lost time isn't critical.
More serious is the way that every enemy ship blows up with a devastating explosion, which is difficult to impossible to avoid. Typically you take far more damage from ship detonations than you do from enemy fire. Often your only option is to emergency Fold away from the exploding ship, and lord help you if you don't issue the order fast enough.
In short, it's something that looks pretty great at first, but sours extremely quickly.
Great game. The graphic is simple but beautiful. The interactions are very satisfying. You macro your economy on a turn-based system and do battles in real-time. Unlike other RTS games that try to keep you busy all the time, this one has a slow time option which allows you to have time to think and give orders to your units. It also has a rogue like element with random item drops and permanent death.
The game is reminiscent of both FTL and the Star Control series. If you like those games, this one is worth looking at. In terms of game length, it is more like FTL and SC1, but the fleet building feels more like SC2. You get to choose a subset of the available missions on any given playthrough (there isn't time for all of them) and build up your fleet for a final battle. This mean both obtaining additional ships and upgrading the ships you already have - a combination I really like.
Ever since i started using VR i have been desperate for an RTS style game. I believe the potential in for the genre in VR is huge and widely untapped at the moment. Eternal starlight is a strong confirmation that VR and RTS can really come together to make something special.
Controlling customized ships in a homeworld esque gameplay loop feels fantastic in VR. The elements of FTL style roguelike replayability add a lot to this as well. Theres just something hard to put in to words that feels incredible about watching these fights take place within the VR space. Though the music and races are a little bit janky (though it is a tad endearing) I highly recommend picking this up and giving it a shot. I really hope this gets a few content updates or DLC that i can firther support it with. All it needs is a little bit more variety in its campaign and i could see myself playing this endlessly.
Buy this game. Kinda a mix of Ender's game and homeworld if you were just to control a few ships.
This is very performance friendly as it doesn't require a high spec computer.
Tip: It is worth it to have the AI mode on for the ships. You can still tell them what to do and where to fly but it will maximize targetting.
Developer! Please continue to update the game!
Eternal Starlight VR is a space RTS with tactical pause. It's very easy to learn yet complex enough to be interesting for a long time.
Controls are intuitive and responsive: ship trajectory is drawn by hand movement the same way you command planes in Final Assault, base weapons shoot automatically in an arc appropriate to their position, gadgets and special weapons are used by simple drag and drop. The game enters heavy slo-mo every time you select a ship, giving you enough time to think and issue a new command. Playing on the Hard difficulty is a pure tactical joy: enemies will outnumber or/and outgun player's fleet most of the time forcing careful positioning and thoughtful usage of different damage types and debuffs.
The campaign is structured similarly to FTL: you choose which missions complete before turn counter reaches zero and the final battle starts. There is a permadeath but there are not enough randomized elements for a proper rogue-lite, which is a missed opportunity since it could have increased replayablity by quite a lot. Still the campaign is long enough by itself and replaying it on different difficulty levels and starting layouts was a lot of fun.
Edit: Dated review, needs to be updated for endless mode.
A fun but flawed game, worth 2 or 3 playthroughs but not more than that. The Homeworld-esque RTS gameplay (very similar to BattlegroupVR) is simple, fun and cool-looking, but when I was playing on hard mode the flaws were apparent (unable to set my ship's orientation easily, suicidal ship AI...).
The game's campaign mode is a cool idea and seems to take inspiration from Star Control and FTL. My normal mode playthrough lasted about 3 hours. However, despite this game billing itself as a roguelike, as other reviews have mentioned, the missions aren't actually fully randomized and are nearly the same on each playthrough which kinda kills the replayability. You can definitely see all the missions within 2-3 playthroughs. Permadeath doesn't really make much sense in this game and should be removed, IMO.
Overall, the game is definitely worth doing a few playthroughs of, but don't expect a true roguelike with high replayability.
I enjoyed playing the game for about 5-6 hours. Despite that, I'm going to give this a thumbs down.
Pros:
- good game concept
- creative use of VR
Cons:
- Story line is static and uninteresting; no replay value
- finished the game is about 6 hours; too few missions
- there are about 50 lines of text in the story and you are going to make me read them; really ?
- no multiplayer
- (grip rotation missing) ** this has been fixed with the last update
- ships have erratic behavior; path following does not work well
- can't rotate ships in place; since weapons and armor are directional, this seems like a critical strategy element that can't be utilized
- poor texture detail
- asteroid blow up in nuclear explosions when hit with kinetic weapons; not sure if that was supposed to be a strategy element
- very limited battle space; most missions are about keeping your ships together and focusing your fire, so the mission variety is low
Summary:
So while this is a good concept, the game feels unfinished to me.
I love this game. Roguelite VR space combat with an emphasis on the tactical, with just enough worldbuilding to keep you engaged when you're not orchestrating 5v5 slugfests between cruisers. Each run is made unique in several ways: missions are randomly seeded, each gaining you favor with a specific faction, in turn unlocking specialized ships and equipment. One attempt you'll field a massive carrier outfitted with long-range missiles and supporting frigates; another you'll play a short-ranged beast that jumps into the enemy's midst to disable them while your fighter swarm finishes them off. Most of the time you'll need to compromise, and that's where the game truly shines.
You should buy this now if you're a fan of:
Homeworld
House of the Dying Sun
Sky Rogue
TIE Fighter/X-Wing
Homeworld + FTL + Ender's Game. Watch little spaceships trade salvos inches from your face. If that combination sounds even a little bit appealing, it's well worth the price. As others have touched on, ships don't always respond intuitively, particularly to movement and attack orders. Fighter craft don't always behave predictably either. Despite the behavioral quirks, it's a heck of a lot of fun; it's visually stunning, the gameplay and UI are thoughtful and polished, and the developer appears quick to address user feedback.
This game is a good example of what I always wanted in VR. Omnipotent view of a 3D battlefield and the ability to RTS the crap out of your enemies. The controls feel good and the combat and ship mechanics all seem very nice. So I would recommend this game just for those factors. Overall, the story plays out balanced and difficulty ramps up appropriately. By the time you get into larger combats later in the campaign, with more ships at your disposal, the VR controls really get a chance to shine.
Eternal Starlight plays a little like a lighter weight Battlestar Galactica: Deadlock combined with the rogue-like aspects of FTL except in VR. You start with a single unit. You (try to) grow your fleet through winning and sometimes buying ships, all with the goal of defeating the big bad later in the game.
It was enough fun that, once I got the hang of it on easy mode, I played through to the end of the game and then started a new game..
For an initial release, it’s fun! Like FTL, after winning the game, you can start with a different ship that dramatically changes the style of game play. The range of weapon and equipment unlocks promises many more interesting playthroughs!
A small complaint: the maneuvering mechanics can be a little janky with respect to facing, e.g., you can’t seem to command your ship to turn in place.
This game was worth the wait. I went into this game blind with no prior knowledge and the intro cinematic and music instantly got me hooked. I have only done 1 play through so far and I plan to do many more. The amount of ways you can go about building your strength is awesome. I personally just uber leveled my main ship and relied on reinforcements from allies in the final battle but i can see the other avenues players can take. My only complaint is that i wish we could explore different storylines but i had so much fun regardless. This game isn't meant to be an rpg where you sink countless hours into one playthrough but rather it is meant to be fun short highly varied playthroughs that allow the player a lot of freedom with their choices. I loved the ship customization features. The amount of weapons and abilities you can get will give you some interesting strategies. All and all i would say i got chills as everything you worked for leading up to the final battle was worth it. The music kept me engaged and feeling the flow of battle. I honestly would love a playlist. The alien designs are fun and diverse. The aliens cultures were interesting though i wished we could have had more dialogue based on them. Like if you learned one thing that's important to a species you could bring it up and get a bonus or something. I saw some choices like that but they were few. The only real things that bugged me were minor things. For instance you couldn't keep time slowed without it taking you out of it after 1 action was done. Another was that when setting fleet formations the ships have invisible hitboxes that make them get stuck on one another. Sometimes the ship just didn't move when i set a course which was fixable by doing it again but that's what i kept noticing. The lack of being able to rotate camera with the index controllers made it uncomfortable to play sitting down. And lastly when you had to manage multiple ships they wouldn't go back into formation if you used their abilities. It kinda kept distracting me when i was trying to coordinate my ships. All and all i would recommend buying this. Its a cheap fun replayable experience that has a great soundtrack and solid gameplay mechanics.
I like it, Kind of got a Star Control feel to it. The battles are small and fast and the story mode and dialog are interesting so far. Needs a couple of things but its kept me seated until I blew up.
