The development of this game has come such a long way! Honestly, I thought the devs might take the money and abandon it, especially with how many Kickstarter games did that back in 2017. But hats off to you all—this game is incredible. After seven years, you’ve finally convinced me to buy it! Haha.

I have decided to quit trying to create a viable settlement. I have now spent close to 70 hours on this game, and though i have had small victories in advancing through the learning curve (which is the toughest and steepest of any game i have ever played), i now feel that my enthusiasm is spent. The reason for this aren't that the game itself poses difficult challenges, which i would welcome; the reason is that the game mechanics themselves are either incredibly obscure or intricate, and in reality i end up fighting to figure out the game mechanics and not the meta:
- Like getting farmers to pick up tilling tools in sutuations where tillings tools and manpower are plentiful and the farming task are set at highest priority, with the result of unseeded fields with no good reason.
- Understanding why tools seem to dissappear and reappear at random.
- Figuring out why domesticated animals suddenly starve to death in the middle of summer, with straw widely and closely available.
- Figuring out why production values of tools and bread fluctuate wildly with seemingly stable supply of raw materials and labour
- And a number of very similar, game mechanics related issues...
After 70 hours i still haven't been able to identify a pattern to some of these basic issues, and it simply drains the fun out of it - i want the challenge to be fluctuations in seasons, crop disseases, soil depletion, trade, knowledge sharing, enemy raids, social cohesions etc; not the game itself.
This game has such an incredible potential, both in variety and replayability and the scale of expansion in the future.
It looks amazing, and every part of it is clearly lovingly researched and created to detail. I had moments of excitement, watching my small group of hunter-gatheres becoming a viable village, watching them build bigger and more impresseive houses (with stunning graphics). If the issues above could somehow be solved, and a tabled overview of production, food etc. be implemented, i believe that this game could be amazing. If the game could be optimized to not be soo very memory demanding, that would be great too.
My obsession for prehistory is satisfied with this game.
it's hard to master but terribly fun if you are interested in the subject.
I love this game! I have been following this teams progress since shortly after it was first announced and finally have a computer that is able to run it. I have not been disappointed playing. It has run super smooth and It has not crashed once. The graphics are super nice. Would recommend.
Great game, even better to see that it hasn't been forgotten about, updates still going on ect. Can be a very tough game but that's the fun in it, and no idea how far it goes, progressing is very slow at least for me but that's also the fun, slowly going through the time and generations slowly growing seeing what you can do and create.
I really want to like this game. But I just can not recommend it to anyone. So many other games on Steam to spend money on. This Game just fails right out of the gate on basics.

A very good game, nice concept, I really enjoy it. I looked at the negative comments, but they seem to be isolated problems or exaggerated. Sure things could be done better, but it's not bat at all right now. It has potential for more, but it really depends on the devs.
Personally I would have loved to have more content. More things to build. That's all.
Check back in in like 5 years when it's done, unless you exceed the recommended system requirements or just want to support the devs cause right now it takes 10 mins just to launch the game even exceeding the min requirements an putting the settings to low.
I'll keep it on my wishlist since I heard it helps the algorithm and I want this game to succeed
I like what I've seen so far. My only concern is that in one game I made it to 2026, and still haven't found metal. Is the game only pre-bronze? I have played a while now, still neolithic. Keep up the progress!
I want to like this game. I think the developers wanted to do something different than most city builders but failed in the execution. I just can't recommend this game in its current state. There's not enough content and the game is generally unfinished.
The UI isn't very intuitive and takes a while to learn, but is also poorly optimized. Many game mechanics are still lacking and supposedly planned to be implemented later (possibly through DLCs).
It's hard to review this game.
I was really looking forward to its release, and I bought it as soon as it went into early access. But what a disappointment. It was too slow, even though I have a high-end gaming machine. The mechanics were hard to understand, especially the tutorial. Everything felt very unfinished. So, I decided to wait for further development.
A year later, I checked it again. This time, it was better optimized, but the gameplay still felt rough, so I left it once more.
Now, it's 2024, and the game has improved a lot since early access. However, there’s still a lot that needs to be done:
The tutorial is basic. They explain a few things and then leave you hanging. I had to go to YouTube to understand mechanics that weren’t explained in the game. They either need a wiki or a more comprehensive tutorial.
Additionally, the mechanics aren’t great. There’s always an issue (you're running out of materials, food, or people are upset), and you don’t have enough information to know how to fix it. Sometimes, even when your tribe has everything, they're still unhappy. So, the mechanics definitely need improvement. One recommendation for the developers is: maybe (for the easy mode) don't focus into making it so real. It's frustrating to sit and gait for little stones, that would never come, or the hassle of migration through dismantelling a thousand buildings. Give us information as to where in the global map I can migrate to find wheat, or flax. Why does my hard earned 5 flax seeds dissapeared after sowing them? Make a faster, easier, and clearer version. GUI are terrible. The groups and ressources windows are like 1995 UI, you can't resize them.
I think I bought the game because of the realism shown in the trailer and the "openness of the world" — the feeling that you could do many things with natural resources and experience progress from very ancient to 100 BC times. But right now, there aren't many things you can do, and you can't progress much through time.
I understand how difficult it must be to develop such an ambitious game, especially as an indie studio, but it still needs core gameplay changes.
I really like the concept, and I hope they can further develop it.
Should you buy it? Only if you’re aware that it’s still in development and want to support a great concept with good people behind it. I personally will play it every six months or so, or after every major update, to see if it's improving, but I can't be playing often as it's a little frustrating.
I have to say I’m a little disappointed, but yes, they've made significant progress since early access, though it’s still not enough.
Good game with huge potential, just needs some fixin and patches.
I am loving this game. I bought the game pre-alfa. It was pretty basic at first but has turned into a great game. It might be too challenging for some of the reviewers on here. It tries to be historically accurate. The weather in the north can be pretty bad in some time periods and not all resources are available in all locations. If you are still hunter/gatherer, you should pack up and move at some point if your tribe gets big or you will starve out. I did have to watch some tutorials to get better. I was having problems loosing some skills in my tribes when skilled elders died, but I have got it figured out at this point.

This game has had a long start, and was rough at the beginning, but NOW, it is very addictive, obviously everything can be improved, but if you love this genre of game, city building, resource and knowledge management this game is for you. It may have some steep learning curves, but it is very fun and challenging. I feel most of these naysayers, probably don't appreciate this genre of game.
Poor game brought out too early before the developers got it right it takers an age to start up with constant waits for updates and something called 'Shaders' after that the tribe do not go where you placed them, then they do not build even though they have plenty of the correct materials, the weather is stupid with constant torrential rain, the groups do not configure to the tasks they are being asked to carry out .... all in all a waste of my money ... i think the developers were trying to be clever in making the game rather ore challenging than the usual survival building game what they have done is ruin what could be a decent subject ... poor, poor, poor, i will give you one out of ten for the idea
If you enjoyed Dawn of Man and youre after a similar but more gridless builder this is one for you. Love me spears, love me round houses, nuf sed
This game is so amazing. Hopefully developers will keep improving it and incorporating new content. So much more potential to make an even greater game. I'm enjoying it a lot. Please listen to players and don't abandon this project like many other devs do.
Ok so after struggling with this for few more days I finally have it figured out. The tutorial basically is bad but if you do some reading and a little personal testing you can understand what's going on. Still some things that don't quite compute but I'm stubborn so I'll get it figured out eventually. So I changed my views of not recommending it to a thumbs up. BTW, in Rome thumbs up meant kill. Thumbs down meant don't kill. Just sayin. Going to leave my previous review here just so you know how frustrating it was so you know what to expect.
Here you have a group of people who depend on each other for their survival. They all have a job to do and you would think that because they need to do that job to survive they would actually do it. But nope. They wander. They stand around scratching their crotch. They stare off into the distance. Anything but do the job their very survival and the survival of others depend on. Does a crafter actually craft because the materials he needs to do his job are there. Nope. Got all the materials they ever need. Can't be bothered with crafting. Gotta take care of that butt itch. For hours on end. If the people who programmed this did the same thing they would never get done. Why does everyone, everyone, who makes this type of game think all people would say screw survival, I have to go contemplate the meaning of that blade of grass while we all starve.
Wait until the game is finished before you purchase. As it is right now, the game will end in one result...your people will die from starvation. You cannot remain in one area because the result is your tribe will die of starvation once the resources in the area can no longer support your growing tribe. You cannot migrate to another area because once you do, your tribe cannot do anything other than stand around and starve to death as none will do anything assigned. None will build, none will gather, none will hunt, none will craft. They just huddle in one spot and wait to die from starvation.
So, wait until the game becomes playable, THEN purchase it. For now, spend your money on games that can be played.

Any one know why this is a factor?
The game sucks and gliches all the time. When you open a info window or try to make groups it clips off the screen so its unplayable. When you go into window mode your mouse isn't synced and wont click. The game is virtualy unplayable and is just waiting around for knowledge to go up. I have looked at everything in the game and it is all around boring. I spent 5 hours on the game only to have 4 basic huts and 27 tribe members. The game would be so much better if the developers cared about it but they dont. So DO NOT GET THIS GAME.
If you're someone that likes "beta testing" this is a great game. It has a lot of potential, but I am not a patient person so it's just not the game for me currently. I'm excited to check back in on it's progress later though! It has TONS of detail and features in some areas, but then lacks little to no detail in other areas. With how much detail there is though (where the detail is anyway) I am confident this game will be amazing with future updates.
- It is VERY similar to "Dawn of Man" with just TONS more detail. The biggest difference is your involvement with your tribe, there's a lot more detail with governing and actually being able to select and work with individuals.
- The amount of time it takes to progress and build but how fast the timeline moves is mildly annoying, just doesn't make a lot of sense and kind of clashes. You will have gone through almost 300 years, but your "years in game" is maybe one year. That's a exaggerated take likely but you know what I mean. Because of this, if you settle by water, the water level will rise but you will have made little to no progress before you have to migrate again. If you don't migrate, you lose everything. You need water for your tribe to survive, but if you stay by water you lose everything or just have to keep rebuilding. I like that the water rising is a thing, I like the challenge, I just wish it was a little more realistic as far as how fast the water rises. I lost my first tribe within 20 minutes of playing to the water level. Like if one "in game" year was anywhere between 10-50 years of the "historical" years it would make more sense. Having those two timelines moving at the same time just isn't realistic for the game play aspect. But putting them a little closer together or making it so you can customize how quickly it moves would be rad.

I love what they have done here. Its beautiful to watch my little tribe as it grows, and the mechanic of work groups rather than micromanagement makes this challenging, new, and somewhat relaxing.
More content to come but I can only see it getting better. For now this is in fantastic shape and I highly recommend.
I really like the idea and was watching the game development for few years now. The increased quantity of recent updates was a decisive factor for me to finally buy the game.
As a person who likes human history I enjoy watching my tribe slowly improving its organisation and technology, while climate changes and time passes. The game already good to play, but there is still a lot of space for content, and I believe it will be done with some more time, and community mods.
Forget the negative reviews on this game! I suspect they did not explore the game enough nor spend enough time in the game to make those opinions valid. As an old timer gamer who has tried and played many, many builder/survival games like this one, I am finding that Ancient Cities is a keeper! There are only 2 others currently out there that I have found as interesting and compelling to keep installed on my PC. One I've had installed for years but that is still quite recently new that I am still playing. I think AC will be my 2nd.
Yes, there are still some QoL issues that could be improved. Yes, there is a bit of a learning curve where the tutorial really needs to be better but I have found that simply asking questions on the Steam forum for AC is more than sufficient to get the answers you need. That said, the game is very playable and has great potential for improving even more imo.
There absolutely IS raiding and trading with other local cities/towns. You only need to know how to do it. Historically correct for the time periods right down to what types of animals and plants are available makes the difficulty of finding food quite interesting. The Devs seem very dedicated to making things historically correct in this way. Also of note, the Devs are absolutely paying attention to players and their opinions. I have had one of my posts/queries answered directly by them so that's how I know.
Give the game a try! The micromanagement is sufficient but it doesn't become overly tedious. There is plenty to do and the time frame to do it seems adequately realistic.

Dev's banned me for being toxic in the forums. All I did was talking about how empty their promises have been. It got alot of attention and I guess I hurt their image and sales, because frankly the marketing for this game is a lie. So I bought the game so I can tell you, this game was supposed to be good, but sadly it's not.
- No depth in any aspect
- after you assign tasks, there is literally nothing to do
- historical years mean nothing
- finding a plot of land in a region is limited also means nothing. You can literally play anywhere on the map and experience the same game
- Tutorial sets you on a bad path, there are actually better ways to play the game, but as I said there isn't a point.
- I played over 1500 years historical but my tribe experienced 10 years in game. none of that makes sense. If I want to start 10,000 BC and play 100 years, then it should be 9900 BC.
- very bland still. Haven't experienced any tribal combat or raids or anything

- the last fire pit you make is where everyone will gather
- no RPG for the people. can't really do much to help them find a wife or advance their skills. Just keep building stuff and eventually tribal knowledge will increase maybe.
There is alot of potential but after 7+ years of waiting from Kickstarter to now and the fact the devs don't take feedback well, I'd avoid this game unless there is a sale and you can't find anything else.
The idea for the game and the game itself look interesting... until you start playing. The game is totally messed up. The priorities are there, just for decoration, they don't work at all. People walk around, without work, for more than half a day... they just eat and sit... if they lived like this on farms nowadays, there would be no farmers left. The game is made for masochists. Not worth the money they are asking for.
At the moment the game is not worth the asking price. But having gotten it on -50 sale, I can recommend it. IT HAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL! But. I hated to dabble with the optimization stuff to find settings, where the game isn't all blurry and buggy. Couldn't there really be a "Use recommended settings" kind of button anywhere? I still think I don't have the best settings, but at least its playable now.
Second. There should be at least one scenario that would have a small, ready tribe set up that you could begin playing straight on, and learn the deeper mechanics more gently. Now a new player is thrust in the middle of nothing with handful of tribe members who at first glance do nothing you try to make them do. It's a pretty steep learning curve from there.
Sure there are guide videos, but they're just not that practical. There's one tidbit of info I need and like 20 videos, that might or might not have the info I need on them. If there was a text guide, a simple control + f would have me right where I need to be.
Now. I'm going to start a new game again (something you will be doing a lot as a new player). Reasons I've had to this.
First game: I apparently started too late far in history and on too slow game speed. After few hours of careful building, I realized I would have NOTHING to do for the next 10 generations or so
Second game: started too close to the switch of the eras and on too fast game speed: there's just too much happening all at once and I hate it
Next game: I will try to find a middle ground. Some recommendations what those settings could be would be really helpful! HINTHINTHINT
A good tribe management and city builder game. You can watch your tribe grow from humble beginning to a big settlement. Game is still in progress and would benefit from more content like tribe customization, more policies, customizable society.
Game gets horrible reviews from its very early release and being wonky but now it’s very playable. I started in the earliest time line possible which is 10,000 B.C. And got flooded out because I didn’t wanna migrate. The whole game is about being a hunter gather tribe in the beginning and constantly migrating to find animals and resources until you can learn to farm and finding land that’s safe to settle on. If you are lucky a wander will join your tribe who can teach your people new skills. I think it’s a well thought out game that provides a good challenge just when you think you are settled the waters start rising and you have to move and resettle. This is my third restart so if you don’t like to loose this isn’t the game for you. Embrace the challenge…
I do not understand why people complain about this game.
"my pc crashes ... bla bla ... and I have no problems with shitty skylines 2" Well, I have no problems playing this game on my Acer Aspire 5 laptop. So maybe trade those flashy RGB crap in for some equipment that gets the job done.
"No tutorial ... have to figure things out myself ... difficult ... bla bla" Well, back in the days when pc games came on floppy's or CD's, there was (sometimes) a booklet with instructions on how to install/run the game, no intructions on how to play the game. And guess what? We didn't even die when we used our intelligence to figure things out.
This game is not, not finished. This game is different of what we are used to these days! And I love it.

I love this game! I waiting years for it to come out and it was worth it, they still need to add a lot of content, but I got faith in the developers. I'm at 124 hours right now and can't wait to see the new update.

Game is nice and all, but it's way too boring. Nothing happens, all you have to do is to build things to improve knowledge of your tribe to learn how to build more things and that happens too slowly. 90% of the time you will just rush the days and nights waiting for that knowledge to go up.
