Gameplay
The Lighthouse is a first-person thriller.
Your objective is to find Lily Beaumont by overcoming environmental obstacles and puzzles while also avoiding a dangerous presence following you. Use the light from The Lighthouse, along with your flashlight, to guide your way.
Environments
Explore through multiple environments with environmental specific puzzles and obstacles. While building the project, we knew that we wanted The Lighthouse's environments to be unique and memorable. We also wanted to make sure puzzles and obstacles were tangible and seemed grounded in the 1960’s, when technology wasn't as accessible as it is today.
The Story
The Lighthouse takes place on February 19, 1964. You play as James Irvine, a former detective turned private investigator in the state of Maine. Irvine is a man who solves the problems that the city doesn't have the inclination to follow-up on, little less solve. Many of the lucrative cases that come to his office are from locals with various requests, from spouses looking to expose infidelity in their relationships to business owners looking to gather enough evidence to incriminate their partners.
February 19, 1964 is an important anniversary for Pt. Irvine as it’s the day he lost his firstborn, Lily, to cancer 7 years prior. Every year he visits her, placing a yellow lily and lit a candle on her gravestone before watching it burn until extinguished. This tradition had never been broken - until today. As he packs to leave his office, candle in hand, he notices a letter slide under his door, the envelope marked: ‘Irvine.’
He opens it and reads:
Mr. Irvine,
My daughter hasn't come home for 2 years, 4 months and 9 days. You see, she's missing. She was involved in the old lighthouse incident, you may remember her name - Lily. I've asked the local authorities to look for her, but they haven't got a clue. They tell me horrible things that no parent should hear. They tell me to accept that she may have died. Worst, they tell me they can't help. I can't sleep until I know where she is, if she's safe, if she's scared, and if she's trying to come home but can't find home. Help me find her. Look for her at the Lighthouse, as that was her last known location.
-Elizabeth Beaumont
Inside the envelope, he finds an address and a single, yellow lily.

2024 and still no update since 2019 ^^
for 20€ you get a 1 hour playable teaser thats just a RIP OFF!!
I just can't tell you to buy this. It's been in my Library for a long time, I opted not to play it since it was in early access, wanted to wait for the game to finish or at the least receive some updates. It just hasn't, nobody should support this game further. Over 3 years, no updates. If you can get it for $1, then sure, go for it. $25 is a highway robbery.
Disappointing. Paid $8 for an hour of content on a game that has been in early access for 3 years. Wait until the game is finished to buy, whenever that is. Now aside from all this the game plays well and looks good so what they did put together is the start of a very promising game. In it's current state 3/10 but I'm sure in a finished state it will be at least a 6/10 if not higher.
this is an awesome game, still awaiting the next act was totally enthralled with the first part, and am excited to see the next portion when it comes out
The game has a high production value, it's very well done art-style wise. I'm not a fan of the character walking in an incremental way, but the game it's good to play overall.
Only 2 chapters were release unto this day, but I hope the developers don't forget about the game, 'cause its has great potential!
still 2022 and zero updates I feel so betrayed and i waste 22,99 euros and steam can not refund my game because i have this game almost 2 years
Yes very cool game,So far at least.Hope they mpve on to scene 3 soon!! Excellant graphics.
Note: I wrote this a long time ago, hoping for regular updates and eventually, a finished game. I haven't fully lost hope yet, but it's been so long that it's starting to fade. I will leave this as a positive recommendation out of that remaining hope, but I'd advice against buying this until something else happens. The discord is barely active, the developer acknowledges little free time to work on the game, it's not looking good right now.
This is a very interesting, engaging, atmospheric game. It may be a bit pricey for what it offers as of now, but when it is complete, it may be too cheap. So far, it's really really good. Although it is a bit short, it has an amazing cinematic feel to it; you care very deeply for the main character - even before finishing the prologue -, which is a very hard thing to accomplish; it has very few, very minor bugs (meaning what's there looks nearly done); and the final game will include a lot more stuff, even in these chapters that have already been released (like collectibles, new non-essential items, etc). I really hope it won't be that long until the full game releases, but so far, I can say that it looks very promising. The developer is also very active on the discord page, so if you get discouraged because you don't see that many news here, try checking it out. I'm looking forward to seeing how this thing will evolve and improve in the future...
Game is incomplete and has not been updated for over a year as of this review. What is there is pretty good but with only an hour to two hours of gameplay, cannot give it a recommendation. Solo developer has admitted that covid has impacted their ability to finish the game. Buy it on sale or wait until the game is finished.
Though this was a great game. Short because early access but awesomely atmospheric and creepy.
Wooow! This game looks and plays great so far! The story is interesting. I love scary mysteries and this is just the right amount of scary for me. I also like how the lighthouse factors into the game- that's something I haven't encountered before. This game has everything I like. Haunted house, lighthouses, diary pages and pretty shots of the moon and beach. I did encounter one oddity. F12 takes a screenshot but I'd get some sort of programming text. It said something like use inventory- false. Use flashlight-true. I assume its to help with the development of the game and will be gone by the time the game releases. I have a shot of this if the devs need it. Also 'V'/LMB doesn't always work when the icon is displayed. I had to move closer. Other than that, it played like a gem. Looking forward to the final game!
I'm mad at myself for forgetting that this game is still not the full game yet. It's basically a demo that you pay for. I totally forgot and saw that the game was on sale and bought it without remembering the above.
DONT BUY! THIS GAME HAS HAD NO UPDATES SINCE IT CAME OUT. Developer blaming corona. Bullshit. Every gaming studio still create games, even during corona.
The play time that I have is the full game so far. 0.8 hours... I feel betrayed and stupid. I want my money back.
Great early-access game! The developer is really active on their discord about updates. This starts out as a noir detective, but then goes thriller and horror real fast. So much attention to detail, atmosphere, story, music.. you can tell this game is a labour of love. You really have to hunt around for items too which is cool. A few decent jump scares as well! If you buy it early access, you'll get the additional acts for free as part of the one time payment.
So far , so good. I can't wait for the other acts . Hope they don't leave us hanging too long . It's creepy and beautifully created . Good use of sound too. So glad that I got to play this before other people (Those that haven't got it yet haha) It kinda has a feel of some old clasisic games. Some very nice tricks in there too . Would I recommend this ? I wish there was an absolutely button.
I finally got around to playing this game and it took about 90 minutes. Beautiful scenery, with a lot of detail. Spooky atmosphere created by music and sound effects with a handful of tasks. Not sure what I just went through, as I ended up with more questions than answers. It is like a series of experiences threaded together rather than a coherent story.
When I purchased this, I knew it was early access but was not paying enough attention to note that it was only a portion of the game. At this point, the full price seems a bit high for the amount of play time... will be interesting to see how things fan out when the next installment is added. If you are inclined to play this exploratory adventure with some surreal transitions, I'd recommend waiting for a sale or for additional content to be delivered.
What a delightfully atmospheric game! I've tumbled down the rabbit hole of horror games again lately and have been sadly pretty disappointed in a majority of my findings, however, this game was a very welcomed surprise!
Pros: The atmosphere is perfect! The way everything is presented to you at first is a little unsettling, then seemingly normal, and right back into creepy with sprinklings of noir atmosphere. It's just beautifully done. Speaking of beautiful!
I'm a stickler for textures. I admire them whenever they have great detail as most of the most wonderful detail work goes unnoticed. The Lighthouse's textures are good, but not mind blowing which is totally fair and okay! Where this game really shines though (bit of pun intended) is it's lighting. The volumetric lighting just helps give everything that dark nuance of something sinister going on.
Definitely strong psychological horror notes. I love it when games take your perspective and play with it. Small details or rooms shift and change and this game jumbled up my brain a bit in the best way possible.
The cutscenes or cinematic parts are AMAZINGLY well cut. I swear up and down whoever did them has a background with film or at least in some format. The music is quite wonderful as well. Production value feels incredibly high to the point where I felt embarrassed I'm only now getting around to playing this as someone who loves the horror genre.
Voice acting is solid! Tons of indie games have weird terrible mixes or never heard of a pop filter before, but from the voice acting to the quality of the audio is great. Minus a minor gripe (detailed below)
Cons: There's some gameplay mechanics that could be polished a bit more. The interaction with the door is a bit odd. You almost have to be standing right in front of the door knob to open the door rather than the door itself. Stand too close to the door and it doesn't work either. That's right. I'm nitpicking the door. Because this game is good enough where I'm going to nitpick this of all things.
While the score and voice acting are amazing. There's some tiny parts where the mix sounds odd. Main character's voice sounds about right, but right in the beginning, Lily's voice sounds very forward placed. It's almost as if you're standing right in front of her as she's recording the vocals. Again, being SUPER nitpicky, but this stood out to me a bit.
TLDR;
Story, atmosphere, visuals, audio, it's all amazing. So far, great intro to a mystery I'm excited to unravel. Very small gameplay parts could be reworked a tad to my liking, but it functions completely fine as is. If you're reading this and on the fence, I say dive in! If you're still not sure, I urge you to wishlist the game! Nothing is more heart breaking than seeing an amazing game that obviously has a lot of passion behind it, never come to fruition because it just didn't get the publicity to keep it going. Wishlisting could help more people see it and experience this game for themselves!
So far.... It has so much potential!
I loved how it started out. Enjoyed the inventory, puzzle, and crafting system. I felt for the character as the journey begins and once I finished chapter 2 I was really sad the it ended cause it only became more interesting. Voice acting was solid when it took place!
Just a few thing to consider:
- It is an early access so small things like animations can feel a little clunky.
- The game is only about 1 hr of gameplay
- The Movement is kinda slow
the lighthouse is beautiful, the story is interesting and the whole setup is gripping.
i had no bugs, glitches or other issues playing the game eventho it is early access, you guys have done an amazing job.
the only thing noteworthy is i got an achievement for "watching all of the end credits" before having even entered the manor
I'm really enjoying this game so far , its interesting , keeps you on your toes, its not easy which is great . has a great story line as well . The clues are there but not always easy to find which is good because that makes the game worth its money ,
Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! Had me hooked from the very beginning such a great prologue!! Well thoughtout story so far, graphically stunning, very immersive and the sound track fits perfectly! Really looking forward to the final release. A must have for any true horror fans.
