Описание

In the Raven Shadow is in the best sense an old-fashioned adventure game for all sense-seeking people.

True retro

The CINEMAX Developer Studio was founded in 1998. This is our first released game. True retro. The original game of 1999, no remake. Excellent voice acting from the famous Czech actor Jíří Lábus.

Story

Severin is a young monk, who was sound sleeping, while some claustral disciples were disporting with adult literature. When he awakes and actually takes the erotic scripture from the boys, he himself is accused by his abbot of the worst sins. The abbot doesn't hesitate long - we are in the dark Middle Ages - trying to behead the 'devil's minion'. Severin can only save his life by a dauntless jump out of the window (he puts his Rambo scarf on for that). While he is lying unconsciously on the ground, he - like already before - dreams strange dreams, which want to bring him somehow on the road of insight about the meaning of life...

When he awakes, he finds himself in a forest without a notion, what to do next, but absolutely determined to fathom the sense of life and find his way. How he will keep track of the question of all questions with shrewdness, curiosity, mother wit and a thick skin and what will be the result, we will experience in this adventure game.

Summary

In the Raven Shadow is in the best sense an old-fashioned adventure game for all sense-seeking people, which can laugh about themselves. And not only the painting in the decayed house does show a twinkle of the eye. The game is made for all those, who don't want to be taken firmly by the hand in the way: here is a hotspot - interact with it, but more: here are many possibilities - think! The puzzles are of medium difficulty. Severin's story runs error free. It will amuse and entertain the gamers for about 20+ hours.

"In the Raven Shadow" is an ancient game from 1999. It's a whopping 25 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware.

"In the Raven Shadow" is an old school point and click adventure game from 1999, released in 2017 on Steam but without any notable remastering or adjustment to make it work well on modern PCs... it does run, although you may question the benefit of that. It's got Czech voice acting, no English, but there's subtitles. There's a strange story about a medieval monk who gets into trouble and is catpulted into a dream world, but the lacklustre, severely dated presentation kills any interest in the plot of this game.

This game has been translated from some other language into English... badly. If this was done through Google Translate, Google Translate should feel ashamed of itself. Regardless, the language in this game is broken and will put off a lot of gamers.

From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

The artwork here is terrible, it's all just amateurish "My First Wacom Tablet" style drawings used instead professional looking game assets. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget to arrange someone who can create graphical assets properly, or lack of talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low, enough on its own to deter gamers.

There's no option to change the resolution and no useful graphics tweaks. There's no way to ensure this is running at the native resolution of your display. There's no guarantee this game will look right on any PC as a result of this hamfisted design decision.

The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio, due to the age of the game, it predates the 16:9 widescreen gaming standard established back in 2006. It's possible they're marketing this towards people using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game is being specifically marketed towards people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. It's obviously not going to look right on a modern 16:9 gaming display.

These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

"In the Raven Shadow" is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $4 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. This is also competing with over 14,000 free games available on Steam, many of them far better than this paid product.

This game might feel a bit weird for a point&click adventure, but that is largely due to the fact that it originates from late nineties, representing a piece of Czecho-Slovak gaming history. You take the role of young and wide-girthed monk Severin, who was expelled from the monastery he was studying in, and now goes on a pilgrimage for… what exactly? Hard to say, as the game doesn’t really give the meaning and instead tells you to “find your way”. On the technical side, graphics and animation scored very high in its time, and though they may look a bit outdated nowadays they still retain its charm; music consists entirely of single-guitar melodies, giving the game almost ballad-like quality. What really stands out is the voiceover, the entire game was dubbed by famous Czech actor (one who has been the voice of Marge Simpson in the Czech edition of “The Simpsons” for more than three decades). The weakest point of the game is paradoxically the story, which doesn’t really have any plot and not much of a point, and the ending felt a bit forced; combining parody elements with serious topics doesn’t really work well here in my opinion. Nevertheless this is still a solid game that provides good point&click adventuring experience, so I can only recommend it for fans of this genre.
