About the Game
Basic gameplay:
Automobile Tycoon is a simulator of a car manufacturing company where you develop, produce and sell cars. The game is turn-based and covers a period of automotive history between 1905 and 2020.Mechanics:
- turn-based
- relatively fast paced (1 turn = 1 quarter, so the game does not drag on)
- gameplay ranges from 1905 to 2020 with historical events like world wars, economic crises and inflation (can be disabled if desired)
- various starting dates (1905,1920,1948,1960,1980)
- various car types (sedan, pickup, cabriolet, minicar, etc) new ones unlocked depending on year
Core design goals:
1. Focus on running a car company (it's a tycoon not a car designer simulator)
The game is about three primary activities a car manufacturing company need to undertake: developing a car, producing a car and selling a car. I tied to balance all those aspects without making any single one dominant. First your engineers research parts and develop a car then you set up, modernize and expand your factory and next you decide on distribution and marketing. All these are accompanied by secondary activities like paying taxes, taking bank loans and so on.
2. Fast paced (simulated 100 years of automotive history in mere 400 turns)
I tried to make it so the game does not drag on. Each turn represents one quarter, so it goes relatively fast without slowdowns. If you add to it historical events (world wars, economic crises) then you need to adapt your strategy quite often.
Also I used mechanics to reduce the need of micromangement and tried to make a convenient to use interface which allows you to execute your strategic decisions swiftly.
3. Streamlined gameflow
While the player is allowed to produce everything there is an incentive to stick to a limited line of models, so you don't need to deal with tons of micromanagement if you want to play optimally. Interface has options to quickly execute your strategic priorities, for example if you want to quickly boost your production you can enable "work overtime" option which makes you pay significantly higher wages for a modest boost of production. Especially introducing new models is streamlined, you just need to enter the model price once and set up region wide optional discounts, no need to check tons of identical boxes and setting every single time.

just not much here, not fun to play
This game is a FAR simpler game than something more intricate like GearCity. If you want a light weight, fast moving abstracted experience, this will likely do the trick for you. If you want something crunchy and in depth, this one might be a bit too shallow, relative to other choices on the market. For the price though, it's not a bad choice.
I refunded this game because it is too hard for me. If you are smart at marketing I recommend this game but if you're bad at money managing and marketing like me, well don't get it.
Will this game ever be further developed? It reminds me of a game I played with friends in the 90's - I think it was called Detroit.
Cheap to purchase, and you get your money worth. Simple to play, with a simple model that once you figure it out, is not really worth re-playing, but does entertain for a time.
Well... it's not bad... but it's not good.
I've burned quite a few hours in it, and keep coming back because I'm a car junky, but when I want that fix, I'm more often reaching for Automation, Gear City, or Production Line, and honestly I still prefer running Detroit in DOSBox, which this is supposed to be a spiritual successor of (it doesn't catch the same magic though)
This is a decent spreadsheet simulator (turn off the inflation, or you'll spend all your time micromanaging prices because costs spiral quickly but there's no option to scale the selling price with inflation) but it isn't really a car game. You could replace the products you're making with just about anything, and change the R&D tree. Feels like it was built to be modular but then didn't take off so they didn't push it out with other assets.
The BIGGEST problem is a complete lack of support and a rather sour developer.
Got a bug? "You don't understand the game, you're probably doing something wrong."
Except that I followed your Bug Forum and did everything it said first. So you agree you've abandoned the game.
Don't understand something? "Use common sense."
Except there's no manual, I'm not inside your head and what makes sense in America doesn't make sense in Europe, doesn't make sense in japan, doesn't make sense in China, doesn't make sense in Australia. Which common sense should I be using exactly? Shouldn't be told I'm stupid, just because the game doesn't make clear what it wants from you.
So you agree that you made the thing unnecessarily vague to appeal to a broader audience, but instead ended up making the game frustrating and difficult to understand to everyone but yourself, which killed it before it even got off the ground.
Honestly, this game could be great, with just a little bit more explanation, a little more depth, perhaps a little more animation of like testing or even just a picture of the vehicle you've produced beyond an icon you can rename.
My advice? Don't pay more than the 50% off price. It's not really worth more than $5 CAD but if you're really hard up for a new game and like turn based number games (I do, and was) then maybe 8-10... maybe. Just don't count on any help from the community (there isn't one) or the developer (kind of a jerk to everyone who asks for help).
If this looks good and you like light and fluffy, skip the bugs, the wasted money and the frustration. Just go find DOSBox and an entirely legal abandonware copy of Detroit, you'll be happier and less condescended.
(edit; and the discussion thread that backs up being treated that way by the dev, has mysteriously "vanished". Can add being silenced, if it makes the dev look bad, to the list of issues with this title)

Does a great job of recreating the feel of Detroit. An old DOS classic. Not quite a straight port, more an inspiration, but I enjoy the game and it has the scale/balance nice. Works well, few bugs.
This game checks many of the boxes in my opinion as a replacement for the early 2000s game by Fishtank Interactive, Car Tycoon. I waited for years for that title to come to GoG or to be updated, remastered, etc. I've tried several other titles that have tried to follow the concept and mechanics of what I loved about Car Tycoon, but I have to say that I believe I've finally now found the title I've been looking for.
Automobile Tycoon graphically cannot compete with Car Tycoon, but being a modern game it is able to deliver exactly what I loved about Car Tycoon and in many ways, more so than Car Tycoon could. I love being able to research and design my own components in an effort to assemble a vehicle that'll be satisfactory and affordable enough to meet the needs of as many people as possible, or if I'm feeling brave, attempt to design something so rare and exclusive that only the wealthiest would have the opportunity to even consider my product. Despite the cartoonish and limited graphical grandeur, this game is a delight and I see myself playing it for some time well into the future. I only wish I had discovered it sooner, for I started to fear I'd never play a game quite like Car Tycoon ever again.
Pros
- Checks many of the boxes that I sought in a modern take on Car Tycoon
- Plenty of control over every aspect of running your company
- Freedom to design and name your cars to your heart's content
- Historically accurate vehicle types that evolve through the ages (phaeton obsolete by the 20s, microcar replacing it, etc)
- Plenty of random (and historical) events to occur and change up the pace and keep you on your toes
- Great value and replayability
Cons
- Graphics are a bit underwhelming when compared to Car Tycoon
Other Thoughts
- Perhaps needing a little more depth/options for managing your company, I find it almost perfect, not to overwhelming and not too simple. It would be nice to have a little more options to augment how much control/options you'd like at the start of your game.
- I only have 3 hours into this game as of writing this review, but it's been awhile since I booted up a new game and lost track of time (and sleep) the way I did with this one on my first night with it. That's saying something.
If you love Car Tycoon, the history of the automotive industry or are simply looking for an interesting take on the "tycoon" genre, I don't think you can go wrong with this title. I am thankful to Silver Lemur Games for creating something that feels almost perfectly catered to someone like me. I never thought I'd see a game like Car Tycoon again.
It is an enjoyable game. It provides different starting conditions which provide longevity. The drawback is that it does not provide clear cut challenges and it feels more like a big sandbox, which should explain some of the earlier bad critics. If you have no need for step by step challenges (like objectives or do this and that), you will find this a very nice game.
I personally dislike these step-based gameplay, where the game leads you through specific paths. so this game is my piece of cake.
Initially, at the first hours I was playing it, I had some issues which turned out that it was bad strategy by my part. For example, if you keep a model running for too long, the construction costs keep rising and you have to tweak the prices constantly to keep it profitable. At such cases, it is better to cease the production of the model.
I also found it quite educative at some points, a clear sign that the developer has made enough research before creating the game. This is always a good bonus.
I recommend it to everyone. Just try to beat it, even at an easy level, before giving your verdict. It is unfair to give a negative verdict on the game with 0.2 hour or 0.8 hours on trying a game and I saw quite a few critics like this. In contrary to those negative critics, I currently have 25 hours, soon more.... and I say try it ;)
It is a bit like the classic game Detroit but it has some ideas of its own, there is so much you need to keep an eye on in this game from spending to development.
It had taken me some ten attempts to make a company that would not go bankrupt within a few years, it seems it is key to quickly make a profit with the provided first model and then quickly make a second one, sedans seem to be the vehicle of choice if you choose to start from the 1940's.
It's a good game especially if you want to skip over the finer details of making a car compared to games like Automation or GearCity where you can shape a car.
I had the game for a while now I can honestly say I played it a few times while it was in EA stage and just a little while ago that its the finished product.
all in all its a good little game does remind me of the old Dos games nice and simple and fun.
I bought it when it was on sale and for a game like this I dont think its worth the full price of 14.99
I do recomand getting it when its on sale tho. if the price is nice and low.
A nice little game very much like Detroit and not as complex as Gear City. Get me a thumbs up and a definate recommend. Maybe there could be an add on for future cars in when this is released and stable.
Great game if you enjoyed Detroit on PC in the old days. Still needs some polish but I already enjoy it. I'd recommend it if you like business sim style games.
Considerably more casual than GearCity but still flexible enough to design the cars you want to. Sales, logistics and production are very simplified. The car designer is as well, but you're still designing a car so quite a bit more complicated than the average tycoon product.
It actually has a complex customer prefernce model underneath but it gives you very little data to target competition with. It's too easy to make money and gets repetitive after a few decades without significant external events or goals.
Full review available, I'm recommending because the hardest part is making a flexible car designer that's not a mess to use and Automobile Tycoon did that well (but streamlined). The rest they can add by release, and I hope they do otherwise this will get boring relatively quickly.
NO. just no. There was a game released a couple of years ago called "Cars Incorporated" that the dev abandoned that this game seems to copy. The difference is this isn't ready to play, alpha or not. I am not paying to alpha test for a developer. You want a good game about the early days of automobile manufacturing, get Gear City. Not this. PS If you don't like my review too bad. I paid my money I write my impressions.
This game sucks....I know its early release and all ..but has no core to it and I love all tycoon games ..even the basic ones but this one has missed the boat all around...worst money I have spent on steam ...Please trust me on this one...at this time ...this game isnt even worth a $1 ...I would love to get my money back even though its $10 I would of rather handed my money to a homeless person i sure would of felt alot better
OldSkoolz
It's very early access, but it has just been relased and there's already plenty to do, however, If you are looking for simulation depth look elsewhere, "Automation Game" is probably what you're looking for.
This one has quite the potential but the basic mechanics are on the simple side for a tycoon; I think how special events will be handled will help define this as either good or bad, more than its potential as a business simulation.
Happy enough with the purchase for now, as not every tycoon need to be a super detailed excel driven accountant simulator, and since being streamlined is the main selling point of the game, can't wait where the foundation will bring it.
This game is a huge fail. Even with loads of work I cant see it being any good. Its a really bad ripoff of a awesome game called Gear City. I have racked up 181 hours on that game and they are improving it all the time. So if you want a game like this but something worthy of your money try Gear City dont waste your money and time on this.
-Unbelievably buggy
-Worst interface i've ever seen
-Most mechanics and features do not work currently
-"Streamline" feature seems to translate to "You can't actually control very much."
It was excruciating to play the 5 minute minimum to post this review. I own 3 OOTP titles, and love management sims, but this game falls so short in the interface and presentation aspects that it's impossible to overlook. I'm disappointed, I was really looking forward to this game.
Cannot reccommend in the current state.
I'll keep it on my wishlist and monitor for progress.
I have been looking forward to this game as I love them. Bought this one this morning and it really isnt ready to be released. Sorry. Every screen shows message that this is alpha and that most things are not implemented. When I first started the game it appeared I had 3 or 4 factories running already eventhough I really couldnt tell. And couldnt change the name of my company because when you erase the original name by backspacing the name just re appears, so you have to leave the first letter. lol not a big deal there though. I will continue to follow and see if it gets better. I hope it does.
