Hmm.
I got a -90% coupon so I decided to give this a go, as it was just over 1 euros. These "unpopular" or rather unknown games intrigue me and can sometimes be pretty ok. For 1 eur, it's not a bad experience. Puzzles and so on, interesting atmosphere. Controls however are weird and a bit funky. For 12 euros it's just not worth the money. If you get a coupon, sure try it and see by yourself. I will give thumbs up, for the price of 1 euros, but with 12 it would be another story.

The game isn't bad by any means, there isn't really anything to complain about except for the length. If you have played through the game, it says "to be continued" at the end because there has been no update since 2017, so the price of 10 euros is way too much for a playtime of about 45 minutes, it also feels much more like a demo than a finished game.
Apart from that, the atmosphere is good throughout the game and the jumpscares have been really good in parts. The beginning was a bit weird and didn't have to be, but apart from that a lot of things were done right and I think it's a shame that nothing new has been added for 6 years, this game had the potential to be great at its current price point, so unfortunately I would only recommend it for sale.

Another horror from Labory, which once again raises the bar for the skill of developers. This time, the team went to radical methods to collect as many negative feedback about their project from the players as possible.
To make the user as uncomfortable as possible - from the very beginning of the game, we turn off the review with the mouse. Leaving our hero to look only in one direction.
If you are the owner of a gamepad and decide that the developer simply forgot to indicate in the description of the game that it works ONLY on a gamepad - by connecting it, you will really be able to move around and even look around. BUT, the controls in the game will be terrible and inconvenient. And you can't reconfigure the buttons. Additionally - the interaction button on the gamepad does not work. And therefore - you will have to use some of the buttons from the keyboard, playing on the gamepad - in order to more or less pass at least the first meeting in the hospital lobby!
I highly recommend not buying this game. You will not only waste your time, money and nerves - but also sponsor developers to create the next game.
A man dealing with guilt and repressed memories engages in a hypnosis session. Within that he walks through horrific scenes suggesting that he brought harm to his wife and unborn child. At one point, it abruptly ends stating, "to be continued", but I doubt that will happen since the game is 5 years old. So the questions will remain unanswered. Nonetheless, it's not a bad time killer for a dollar.
I'm sorry, but no, the game is buggy, does not show basic controls, such as crouch. Is not finished, a be continued that never continued, very cheap jumpscares, mildly inmersive, i give it that point. not rally woth buying, even if it is on a big sale, in the end it's like the alpha test of a game that was never finished. very sad :(
Sure, the price is very low ON A DISCOUNT, and for that price, the game presents pretty good graphics, the search and attention needed for the gameplay and the hidden corners of the game are pretty awesome, and, again, the short gameplay is an effect of the price and the proper graphics, BUUUUT
THE **ING PLOT ENDS IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE!!!!
It just leaves you with a sense of dissatisfaction! I've played, spent this time on the game, and with all my mind concentrated on the details and stuff, and now it shows me no real discoveries except one event; it scratches the surface and says
"TO BE CONTINUED"
RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF where the plot is supposed to start and the game take off. Just wrap it up, at least, or raise the price, make more content, and end it!
And for this reason, and not reasons related to gameplay, the game is not worth the frustration at its end and CERTAINLY NOT WORTH ITS NON-DISCOUNT price, just for that reason_____ESPECIALLY for ppl around the world for whom 100 or 200 units of their currency is not worth so little as 20 Euros for a European.
P.S.: Some ppl may say that the 2nd part is obviously meant to be released later. Even in that case. each part has to end where a full package of story and meaning have been discovered, not one and a half. Also, even if so, the game is not worth the price except on a 90% discount.
Not recommended. Whilst not the worst horror game on steam (which is faint praise let's be honest), it is definitely on the less polished side of things.
The game starts with a very rough-round-the-edges scene where you're wandering around a hospital trying to find your appointment room, book-ended by 2x cutscenes accompanied with text detailing the protagonist's thoughts and his conversation with his therapist. Why this couldn't have just been one big cutscene I'll never understand. Then the game proper starts. And I'll admit there's a couple of scenes where you're exploring some spooky surroundings, finding items, getting jumpscared, solving straightforward puzzles, that, although nothing groundbreaking, are competent enough. But these are just fleeting moments. The rest of the 45 minute runtime is spent wandering cluelessly around environments, trying to find the next odd assortment of actions to trigger the next paranormal activity/hallucination to kick in. And I was able to complete the game at my first attempt without a guide, so I'm assuming I wasn't stuck at these points due to bugs, it's just really not signposted what you're supposed to do and honestly I felt at times like it was just a random activity by me that triggered the game to progress which was really disorientating. I honestly could not quite explain what I had done to advance the plot and I think this is the first game I've ever played where if I'm being honest, if I played it again it would probably take me longer to complete.
In summary, amateur outing that isn't even worth it at 90% off.
I know I got low mile on this game, but this game does not tell you where you suppose to go and that's really stupid. It really feel like you're kicking yourself in the balls for real I'm guessing it's the type of game where you just click on anything like really stupid at some point to get lucky.
I will keep playing this game and edited my review later but right now I'm just piss off.
Unfinished and unpollished game with a couple of good ideas but that leads nowehere. One hour of gameplay ending with To be continued . Pretty sure it will never get finished given that the last update was in 2017. Got it for less than a dollar and frankly, I'd have been pissed to pay $12 for that
ive played alot of horror games and this one has hit pretty close to being a good horror game. the jump scares were not the best but the game did have many good mechanics. the graphics ofcourse lacked a ton but it was pretty good. probably a 7/10

Rubbish I can only move my character WASD but I cannot move the camera with the mouse or any button complete rubbish avoid.
Slow, boring, and full of cheap jumpscares and "spooky" glitch noises.
I've been more scared watching videos of little kittens playing with cat toys.

In essence, The Descent is a walking-exploration simulator of a man analyzing his own psyche. One aspect I like about this game is that there’s rarely any exposition. The narrative unfolds to the player through the mood, particularly its overt themes. For instance, part of one level involves finding the broken pieces of a picture of a pregnant woman, presumably your wife. Later you discover you hurt your wife – while simultaneously being exposed to dead baby props and jump-scares. Solve the puzzle and the story is short, but clear. You most likely hurt your wife while she was pregnant and she then most likely had a miscarriage. I say “maybe” because the game seems to be the first installment of a series so you never know what might change.
However, what really drives home this narrative is the creative level design. You play through roughly four different levels (reality and three depths of your unconsciousness) and they are all so unique. The overarching level planning really communicates the protagonists’ descent into his mind. The deeper you go, the darker the color palettes get, the weirder the sound effects become, the more surreal the environment appears and so forth. I will also quickly state that this game has the best flashlight of all Unity games hands down, but only if you select and apply the “Fish-eye Lens” in the options. It works just like a camera, and the clicking from “on” to “off” is immensely satisfying.
One aspect of this title’s well-executed atmosphere is its sound design. Instead of relying in loud thuds, open and closed doors or high-pitched string instruments, this title creates atmosphere by making commonplace sounds frightening. For instance, you’ll reach a dead end and will hear keys dangling from someone’s approaching pace through a rotten locked door blocked with wood planks – or you’ll hear like something is cracking its joints as you turn a corner until the sound evolves into something crushing a child’s skull. I also enjoyed the graphic designs. The two “monsters” that you face were horrific and the jump scares are off-beat enough for the player to get caught off guard here and there. But they’re not loud, they’re more in the fashion of a “glitch-in-the-matrix” type.
Overall, The Descent is a fun title that I would not mind if it served as an example to follow. It's slightly above its price range but that's only a minor caveat. It’s one of the better Unity games out there right now and it has the potential to influence the genre like the Slender-Man series. That being said, The Descent is a Unity title surpasses the expectations laid out by Slender-clones before it by avoiding the trope of collecting items while a tall, ominous silhouette follows you continuously until the end. It doesn’t revolutionize the field of horror-exploration, but it does enough to warrant its own merit within the Unity titles

If this game were free to play or advertised as a demo I'd be more impressed. The level design is pretty good and the atmosphere works pretty well at times. but the fact that it relies mostly on cheap pedetermined jumpscares, has inconsistent mechanics, pads runtime by using poor direction in what the player needs to do to continue and lacks a real goal in what it wants to be, I cannot recommend it to anyone unless you're a game desinger learning what not to do in a horror game. You'll have a better experience watching a Let's Play with all the filler edited out.

I am torn between giving this game a thumbs up, or a thumbs down review. Now if you watched my above gameplay footage, you might be confused as to why, as it seems like I am enjoying the game. And in fact yes, I did enjoy it. However there are a number of issues the game suffers from.
First is just how damn short it is. My playtime includes me having to redo the section you see in my video impression. Yes the game is that short, and offers little replayability. It also ends on a to be continued - but no indication if the extra chapters will be free or paid for.
Also the controls are somewhat laggy, as well, with some odd choices such as using E and Q to flip switches.
And talknig of switch flippping the storepage suggests puzzle elements? Flicking switches does not equate to puzzles. But that was the one 'puzzle' in the game.
The game also suffers from poor pacing. Some sections you are stuck just waiting for things to happen, or for picture elements to appear. That is not good game design.
So why have i not refunded the game and left a negative review?
Because this developer does show some promise. He (or she) has some good ideas, and some moments in game are really disorienting and the jump scares are kept to a minimum. He also attmepts to break the gameplay up, as well as having put in the effort at some cutscens and into to tie the game together. Something you don't often see in most untiy horror games on steam.
The basic seed is there, but it need more time to grow before harvesting. So hopefully the dev will take this onboard and get out a conclusion to this game, and remove the irritations that are holding it back from being a much better game.
I agree with a lot of these reviews. Played through the whole thing in about an hour. Definatly had a couple of jump scares. No voice acting, all text speach. I am kinda interested to see where the story goes (which I really don't know what the story is about other than some abuse and no sleep), but ending says "to be continued". So I am assuming there will be more additions to it at a later time. VERY SHORT. So far I'm giving it 6/10 mainly because I cant complain with the price. Is it really worth it, meh.

This is more of a sideways thumb.
The game isn't bad, but it's not great either. It has a solid atmosphere and the puzzles weren't too hard. I finished it in less than an hour and I really took my time with it which probably means that the average person can complete this in less than 30 minutes in its current state.
I encountered a few minor bugs as well. In the hospital waiting room, there is a wall in the men's bathroom stall that goes invisible and you can walk through it. If you click around enough in the waiting room, the mouse pointer appears which can be a little disorienting if you're easily motion sick like me. I found that this can be fixed by hitting escape and then resuming the game.
I didn't find there to be many scares outside of a small handful of jump scares. I think only one of them actually made me jump. But I play a LOT of horror games so that might be because I'm a veteran. :P
Once I got to the ending, I was greeted by a 'To be continued' sort of screen. I guess that means that there are more chapters coming? Hopefully they don't charge for them since the first 'chapter' isn't worth $3.99 just by itself.
Keep it up Devs! I am very interested to see how this title progresses.
