Love the game! It is a simple small game, but I had fun with it :)
Warning: Game does not launch.
Will Glow the Wisp is a broken mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. The mobile app does not correctly launch on Steam as it hangs on the "loading" section, possibly trialling to dial home as part of a potentially user-hostile (yet also indecipherable) EULA. As the mobile app itself is broken, so too the EULA cannot be read properly as it doesn't display properly. It's evident zero testing took place when porting this trash mobile app to PC, where it doesn't belong.
When it worked, this was a very lazy minimalist "avoidance" style arcade game where you would put your finger on your iPhone screen and drag it around to avoid various obstacles/moving walls/bullets while listening to very badly made, annoying electronic music.
From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this didn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.
PC gamers will be insulted by the demand from the developer that a console peasant children's toy controller should be used, despite this being on PC. Developers should try to be aware which platform they're developing for, and must never, under any circumstances dictate to gamers how their games are to be experienced.
While there were options to change the resolution for the mobile app, all this does is scale up the simplistic 2D art assets used to make the mobile app, which makes little or no difference to the graphics quality. Without any other substantial graphics tweaks, it's not possible for gamers to improve the lacklustre 2D visuals.
The mobile app features extremely lazy, minimalist "art", of the type you normally expect to see in low effort Flash/browser games and mobile apps. Considering this is being evaluated as a PC game, having the graphics phoned in like this isn't going to result in a high quality, visually impressive game that PC gamers are used to seeing.
Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone.
These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.
In an attempt to excuse the low quality of delivery here, the mobile app makes a big point of having a nice soundtrack. If the business plan for a mobile app is to compete with Spotify, which is free and has effectively unlimited music, all of which is better than the music here, it's failed before it even started. Gamers can listen to the Spotify for free. A game cannot be seen as recommendable just because it competes badly with listening to the radio or to MP3s.
You're forced to sign a highly questionable yet legally unenforceable End User License Agreement... for such a relatively low effort, low quality mobile app this comes across more as a delusion of grandeur than anything else. This agreement includes questionable requirements that may attempt to revoke consumer law protections that gamers expect to have, which is also highly problematic. Developers must learn they are here to serve gamers, not control them. I had my cat walk over the keyboard while the EULA was displaying, which fixed that problem for me.
Once more we see greedy mobile devs trying to scam PC gamers. On Steam, this is $2 USD, on app stores, it's free. Mobile devs must learn PC gamers are not here to be gouged, and can't be expected to pay a premium for a broken mobile app just because it's been lazily dumped on Steam. This is unacceptable disrespect for PC gamers. Because this can be played free elsewhere, and because of the other defects, it's impossible to recommend. Who do they think we are?
Developer Response!
The developer has weighed in to inform everyone they didn't read the Developer Usage Rules for Steam "partners", or they deliberately ignored the part where Valve says:
Though it may be tempting, not every review needs to be responded to. A developer response will frequently draw more attention than the original statement, potentially turning a small issue into a much larger community discussion. It's also not a good idea to use this feature to refute customer opinions. Your direct attention can be seen as validation or a defensive attempt to silence your customers.
There's a few things to unpack here, all of which add considerable weight to the points raised in my review, validating many solid reasons why gamers should avoid this mobile app like the plague. Let's see how deep the developer digs their hole.
The developer confirms that this is a mobile app, but apparently had problems launching it on the app stores first. But it doesn't matter what order the developer launched this mobile app on which platform, the fact is that it's a mobile app, has all the qualities of a mobile app, was designed for the lowest common denominator of gaming platforms, and thus compares poorly to games designed for PC. But we must ask why the developer is so upset about being confronted with facts they themselves confirm that they're willing to breach Valve's guidelines for developers just to confirm one of the main reasons this is a defective product.
The developer ignores the fact that their toxic EULA doesn't even display properly, but then goes on to confirm my suspicions - it is a toxic, anti-gamer EULA that cements the developers desire to spy on users through the spyware/data harvesting features integrated in this mobile app. There's not enough ways to possibly go over why this is cancer and why gamers should never touch this mobile app. Here's my boilerplate:
While there is an option to disable the spyware, there's no guarantee that will work. Worse, the developers turned this on by default to try to spy on as many gamers as possible. The developers will make the unverifiable claim that this data isn't personally identifying, but they're collecting presumably IPs and all kinds of other information about gamers, when combined with other profiling data this can 100% identify an individual. They'll say it's for "QA" purposes but there's no guarantee they're not profiling you or selling your data to third parties as they spy on you. Should you trust them? Of course not... if they had any concerns about user safety and privacy, they wouldn't have built spyware into their mobile app and turned it on by default!. There's simply no reason to trust them and gamers should avoid this mobile app because of this unacceptable privacy invasion.
The developer then decides to inform gamers that they think it's the gamers responsibility to fix problems with games by rooting around in their user profiles. Once more we can see the defective reasoning in the developers mindset that explains the poor quality of this mobile app, but does not excuse it. It's the developers responsibility to make sure their games work. Foisting tech support onto end users just because the developer is too lazy to make games that work properly is the height of arrogance.
My review stands unaltered, with the exception of additional warnings about the embedded spyware functions of this mobile app. Avoid this cancer like the plague.
my eyes were bleeding after finishing the game, i don't recommend
Dev didn't add option to disable controller vibration.
we always wanted 2 be
boppin lil colorful sperm
bop bop bop bop bop
really doe this game is not easy but still fun n the visuals be... boppin.
Nice little bullethell game that you can complete in under 2 hours. I liked world 4 the best.
My main frustration was that I kept accidentally pressing LB or RB which changes the players character but also instantly resets the current level. I recommend the dev moving the character selection to another button.
6/10
A well thought out game that offers a fair challenge. You'll quickly get into a flow, which makes repeating levels a lot less frustrating. A very enjoyable game, especially the final level of each stage offered a nice change. Can be easily finished in one setting, but absolutely worth picking up at the discounted price.
Chill but challenging game with an amazing soundtrack. The controls are pretty nice. If you are searching for a challenge and wanna beat some highscores this is for you :)
Avoid. With small games like Will Glow the Wisp, particularly one involving 2D platforming of any description, these days there's a heap of competition. Generally, you need a hook, a central mechanic that sets you apart from the rest. This game has a dash mechanic - standard for the genre - and nothing else, unless you count instant death walls. Unfortunately, there's not enough innovation or competence on display here to recommend it.
The basic idea: you guide your glowing wisp through a series of colourful corridors, dodging hazards en route. If you stray out of bounds and touch those neon blobs, you'll perish instantly. Bog-standard stuff, which isn't necessarily an issue if there's either lots of polish or good level design - preferably both. Will Glow the Wisp has neither, and the levels felt uninspired and insipid. The graphical style is simplistic, but might actually be the main selling point of the game, since it at least looks a bit different from the norm.
Honestly, I don't have a lot to say, and the fact that it took me 48 minutes to beat the entire game may be why. I have the option to try and 5* every level, but I just don't want to subject myself to that. I don't particularly enjoy bagging on small indie devs, but neither do I think that Will Glow the Wisp has any real redeeming qualities in such a saturated genre. Skip this one.
Great, challanging game with an trippy design. Really enjoyed the colors and the soundtrack. Can get hard sometimes but failure never feels unfair. Defentely worth playing over and over again. what i will do. zooooomm.
I'm not sure exactly how I'd define this game, but you play as a dot that traverses the levels with the ability to slow down time. The music is good, and the aesthetic works. I'm about 3/5s through the game, and it gets fairly difficult, some levels taking me 30+ tries, so I think there's some appeal for gamers wanting a challenge. The game isn't super long though, I'd guess if you were dedicated or really good you could finish in maybe 3-5 hours.
I'd say the game is worth about $5, assuming you enjoy the bullet hell indie genre.
I will note that one issue with the controls I had was that the player's dot seems to be the only thing affected by gravity, slowly falling down if left alone. It could be a feature, but it felt like gravity wasn't removed for the player component.
Simple concept, yet very fun and challenging physics type of game. I see it as weird kind of platformer. Game starts quite easy, but increases in difficulty as you progress. What I like most about it beside the lovely aesthetics is the quick gameplay style that keeps you moving from one level to the next.
One cool feature is competing against the ghost of other players. While not technically a difficulty, there are different kinds of wisps, and each has its own speed. Speed can be a plus or minus depending on the level.
Game is short though, 2-3 hours. Just bare that in mind.
Will Glow the Wisp is pure gameplay, no bullshit whatsoever. The game is simplistic and features nice particle visuals. I enjoy the competitive nature. Fighting with other players on the scoreboard of each level, offers many hours of fun. Playing a level multiple time stays as exciting as the first go, because the walls and obstacles always change slightly. If you like to get those highscores the game is definitely worth your money. Let's fight for the fastest runs!
A game that will mezmerize you with it's grace and beauty. It's set in an abstract universe as a top down platformer with contrast and color rivalling Tron.
This game remember me at the good old Ball-in-a-maze puzzles (Labyrinth marble games) and it is likewise addictive which means you can not stop playing it for hours to move your little glowing wisp to the end of the level.
But there is more: Enemies and Endbosses to fight and ghosts of other players that you can run against competitive etc...
The game mechanics and the levels are very good balanced, and well tested. Chilly music, sounds and good graphic completes it.
The only criticism I have is that the tileset of the graphics doesn't change much and it could be more in sync with the music.
Nice to Have:
Super easy mode with checkpoints or last best position start.
nice soundtrack
really good flow
I like this game. For me it is not the kind of game I can play for hours and hours, but it really shines as a nice side-game for whenever you have some minutes left to spare. Or some more minutes if you're feeling competitive and want to beat your friends' times! ;)
Loading times are fast and movement is smooth like butter. As you have come to expect in this genre of games, once you die you're real fast back in game for your next attempt. #FrustrationFreeZone
The soundtrack is nice and suits the game well (ironically the title/trailer song is the one I like the least)
Depending on your style of play you can sink a lot of time into this game. On the other hand if you're happy with just making it through a level with no desire to get a four or five star rating... you're probably missing out on some of the fun.
PS: If you ever wanted to be on top of a leaderboard, try your luck while there's still room!
Great challenge game that reminds me of Meatboy. It's all short challenges with split seconds restarts. The soundtrack and visuals are pretty awesome.
