Awesome game!!! Scary at just the right times. They better make a Chapter 2!!!!!!!!!!
Ehhhhhh...I don't know that I'd RECOMMEND this, but I don't want to give it negative. It's not bad for what it is, clunky but decent little haunted house romp, but what it is is only ONE CHAPTER of a full game. It's 1.5-2 hours tops even if you're being thorough. I have no damn clue how people are spending 5-6 hours on one run on this. I can only assume they're getting stuck in the mazes in the end? (which frankly do feel like padding, but you can also skip 1-2 of them if they're getting annoying). Maybe worth getting if you see it on deep sale for under $2 like I did, but this is just a piece of a game. More like an extended demo, but that you pay for. Probably better to play it when the full game is done, if that ever even happens.
Just another typical 2010's "run and hide from the invincible monster" simulator in the vein of the vastly overrated Slenderman, where the majority of the story is told through pamphlets and notes. It also constantly throws jump-scare after jump-scare at you.
No thanks.
Wow. I mean, I have played many trash games. It's insulting how bad this game is. But this one is takes the cake. There is zero effort. I am sure the developers have no idea what this game is about. This was even worst for me because I left a game development company because they were making games like this.
Nice little horror indie game.
More story and ambiance-based than jumpscare-based. Some parts are pretty hard and stressful as you have to flee your enemies and also find your way out of a maze at the same time. A little unintuitive at times.
But if this is the dev team's first try as game developpers, it's very well done and well worth the play.
if your looking for a great horror game thats underrated then this is the game for you! The game is different which is a good thing because most games are just remakes of others and i have never played a game like this one before. The game features very unique puzzles that get harder as the game progresses, a abnormal story line unlike many other games, many scares, and the game really makes you think. The game doesnt give away a lot of clues or hints which makes you need to be alert and pay attention at times and makes you need to use your brain to figure things out. Other games will be like "i need to find this in the kitchen" like i dont wanna be babied in a horror game let me think for myself. overall dont listen to the bad reveiws because those are people who expect a godly game from a small creator. Game has a great story line and cant wait to see what the future of Lazaretto holds! <3
This game brags about being "one of the most atmospheric horror games on Steam!" but is ironically the least atmospheric game I have played for quite some time.
Positives:
- Looks okay
Negatives:
- No originality what so ever
- Repetitive find the key puzzles
- Puzzles are poorly explained and feels random
- Enemies insta kills and will often be very difficult to run past
- You can only hide in lockers, but lockers are only used once. You are often left at the mercy of the enemie's weird AI
- Story is boring and told almost exclusively through notes (which were heavily overused in this game)
- Full of every cliché imaginable
- Lack of good checkpoints. Dying meant you had to go back to the beginning of a level, sometimes to a level before it, forcing you to sit through loading screens again
- Poorly voice acted screams which are overused
- Ending felt very abrupt. Even if you're doing an episodic serie, an ending to a game should feel satisfying
Conclusion:
Enemies will often block your only way out and puzzles often make no sense at all. There was one time I had to get a key and a note mentioned something about a guy being short and unable to reach a key. I could open up some morgue burners and thought I had to climb them to reach a key. I looked through every shelf and found nothing. Looked at a walkthrough and found out the key was at some random pipe and I didn't have to bother with the burners at all.
Many puzzles were like that. I was either given no clues at all, or I was given what I thought were clues, but weren't.
The biggest issue though is the lack of originality. I have played so many horror games before. Some of them (although very few, unfortunately) have tried something different, be it a different mechanic or unique environment.
This game does nothing new at all. I have seen the same game done multiple times before.
Incredibly creepy horror game that is also experimental and then it suddenly ends! The ending is shit because this game is old and no new chapters have been released. Too bad........
Otherwise a solid experience.
Excellent frame rate as ALL steam games should have!! The part what got me was when the ghost near the beginning of the game, it comes after you and you have to jump down the lift shaft, just make sure you jump to the far end of the lift shaft to go down the ropes/wires, its a Very creepy game with an excellent atmosphere, it made my skin crawl most of the way through, the nurses station is my favourite part, it is a really well done game, i can't wait for part 2!! Highly recommend for any Psychological horror fan, Solid 9/10!! Thanks for making it, i will play it again!
Its like the developers said lets make a horror game with everything horror in it a haunted hospital then a haunted mansion then a haunted fairground attraction ride and then 4 different mazes which get harder.
Also it was hunt the key and the odd document to keep you interested I cant say that I really enjoyed this game and I cant really say I didnt enjoy it it was just ok.
Sure, danger comes with the territory in urban exploration. But after the giant spider in the magic ghost realm killed me for the fifth time (you read that right) I reached that point of perfect clarity where I decided in an instant, "ok, this is it. Last try and I'm done."
Alas, on that fateful attempt I happened to pick the correct random tunnel to flee down; and so bound by honor I was forced to continue.
You might ask how you get from "urban exploration" to "magic ghost realm," and I wish I didn't have to be the one to tell you. My guess is that they bought some kind of generic Horror Game Starter Pack and just wanted to see if they could use everything in it. That's what it felt like, at least.
As excuses go for putting us into a scary building so we can be chased by monsters, the urban exploration angle isn't bad. To start with, it gives the main character a different sort of motivation. You're not there on behalf of some organization, seeking an ancient treasure or driven by a personal quest burning in the depths of your heart; basically, you're just goofing off. Your only goal ought to be to turn around and get the hell out of there after the first ghost attack.
Needless to say, that's not what happens. Every question about this game's design that starts with "why" can be answered, "because it looks creepy." Nothing in this game fits together or seems to have any real thought put into it.
It didn't have to be this way. They could have spent some time thinking about what kind of gear an urban explorer would be carrying and worked that into the mechanics in different ways. What if you damage your headlamp near the beginning, for example, and so you're in a constant state of anxiety about getting stuck in the dark. That would make for a really intense, focused game. Or maybe you discover some terrible secret and so you try to document it and warn people about it; maybe you meet someone trapped down there and you both end up working together to escape while you're pursued by mutants or something.
If you wanted, you could even make it into sort of a dark comedy, where all this guy cares about in the midst of this horrifying situation is taking cheesy pictures to post on social media. Tons of possibilities.
Anyway, what you actually get in the end is the magic ghost realm.
You can find more indie game reviews at oddlittlegames.com or visit my curator page. Thanks, and enjoy!
This game has some serious problems and the biggest one is the lighting. Everything is way to dark and the torch is completely useless. Stretches to about an inch in front of you. Further to that is no way to change it so you are basically groping in the dark. The storyline could be interesting but who knows.
What a little gem this game is!!! Lazaretto has been one of the best horror games I've ever played. Yes, it's not very long, but maybe you don't want a game that takes forever, or costs a lot?
The first half of the game is pretty standard fare, and the second half is where this game turns into something very special... There is a good, quality feeling to the movement, interactions, rendering style and audio. Right from the very start, you can feel this is an above-average game.
There are definitely some scary things in this game... :D Some things more fresh & interesting than some monster chasing you around a hotel or abandoned space facility. The puzzles were pretty simple & straightforward; I don't think anyone will be frustrated with anything in this game too much.
I think you absolutely get your money's worth out of this game, and I totally recommend it. Really hope more parts of this game happen...
10/10
Pretty good.
Felt like it ended abruptly though but I cant wait for the 2nd chapter to come out :D
i bought it in Steam Sales. I think it was a nice horror game but quite short, but some good scarys. When will the chapter 2 come? I am waiting for it. :)
Lazaretto is a really great example of spine-tingling atmosphere used well. The sound design keeps you on edge for the length of the game and some really neat visual tricks are employed to play with your head. There is a litle bit of jank but it's pretty easy to forgive when everything else is so effective. I haven't sworn at a horror game this much in years. Big thumbs up from me.
I don't want to ruin anything with details, so I'll just say this: This game delivered possibly the biggest scare that I have ever experienced in a horror game on my stream. I will be getting Chapter 2 when it comes out! Rating: 9/10
I really loved this game! The only part I really had difficulty with was toward the end and it was a bit mazy and I was getting lost, but that's no fault of the game. I really loved the story aspects and the game scares were great! I really am looking forward to more from this developer!!
Game is such an original. The controls are tight and very responsive and the Devs are amazingly involved with the community. Had an absolute Blast Running threw this game and I hope others will give it a go.
PROS:
- Very Responsive Controls
- Very Atmospheric
- Creepy as All Hell
- Good Character Designs
- Interesting Nightmarish and Serial Locations
CONS:
- BGM tends to fad to early at points. Game has a lovely audio track but also amazing haunting sounds, so this may actually be an intentional mechanic. Either way it works well, I would really like to listen to some more of the music. Maybe an OST is in order? I'd buy it.
- The Spiders are so real (That should be a plus though right, not a con. lol)
- Chapter 2 isn't out yet (that's more of a joke then an actual fault)
Final Thoughts: Absolute Blast of a game, had a super time doing a Lets Play on it and interacting with the community and Devs. Seriously can not wait for the next installment.
Lazaretto is a scary and fun romp through a dark and twisted world that will take you and your mind places. Although short the game kept my attention even while looking for a couple of keys as searching meant you were rewarded with more story. The story of this asylum turned infectious nightmare is satisfying and I'm hoping that we will see more as this is just chapter one. Even though some characters play a small part as being in one sequence, I really enjoy there was story for why "monsters" and monsters were in this game. I plan on giving Lazaretto (chapter one) several more playthroughs due to missing a couple of collectibles (not sure if they add more to the story). Puzzles for the game were very well designed both in presentation and how you would solve them but don't let the mentioning of puzzles turn you away. There is an overall sense of dread in the atmosphere as you make your way through the world of Lazaretto, filled with excellent audio that doesn't go the normal route of blaring loud noises at you for a cheap scare or overused random pop-ups. I really want more of this game's world and story as this is again a very spooky game with decent pacing between the scares and things that may lull you into a false sense of security. I highly recommend this game.
A short but enjoyable horror game. It starts off like a typical ghost hunt on a spooky island asylum/hospital and ramps up quickly into a psychological thrill ride towards the very end. Leaves you with a taste of what's to come.
•The character designs were great. I particarly enjoyed Handsome Hank and Professor Cain.
•The sound design was superb. The moans and whispers were effective.
•The setting and ambience was unsettling. The grimy hospital basement and nurse station stand out.
All in all, a nice little horror game worth the price.
Just completed this game on my channel (playlist below). I had a good time! It was adequately spooky with some good looking enemies alone the way. The audio was my favorite aspect of this game as it made moments tense even when nothing was there. It left lots of questions unanswered, but I assume Chapter Two will clear things up.
So far a good start to the series.

So far the game is quite good. The game has a twist on how you encounter hostile mobs which could lead to intense moments of panic. Strange noises can be heard all threw out the game which bring environments to life that leave the player with feelings of anxiety.
EDIT:
i just finished the game and im very impressed with what I saw! I cant wait for chapter 2 i give it 8.5 out of 10. Custom controls would be great and when hiding or ridding something the mouse becomes very sensitive and jitters around. Very good game though, go buy it
