It is thirty years after the failure of the Space Colonization Program.
Humanity is nearly extinct. A perpetual and deadly Rain falls on the Earth.
Men known as "Junkers" plunder goods and artifacts from the ruins of civilization.
One such Junker sneaks alone into the most dangerous of all ruins -- a "Sarcophagus City".
In the center of this dead city, he discovers a pre-War planetarium.
And as he enters he is greeted by Hoshino Yumemi, a companion robot.
Without a single shred of doubt, she assumes he is the first customer she's had in 30 years.
She attempts to show him the stars at once, but the planetarium projector is broken.
Unable to make heads or tails of her conversation, he ends up agreeing to try and repair the projector ...

Planetarian. Spoiler warning.
The novel starts off with a nice intro and shows a building that we find ourselves in. It appears to be a department store. She tries to give us a bouquet of flowers as her gratitude. She wanted to say we were her 2,500,000th customer, but in reality, we were her 2,497,290th customer. The overall setting of this story takes place in a dead city. A place where humanity is dying. The protagonist we play as is an unnamed character who is a "Junker".
He happened to find himself in a department store and stumbled on Yumemi. He saw her as a threat at first, but he lowered the rocket launcher and looked at her. Yumemi only wanted to be of service like she always has done for the past 30 years of her lasting as a robot. There was this gyroscope thingy that was used as a projector known as, "Miss Gena". It would project the stars. However, it needed to be repaired, so Junker would clean it and replace the Light Bulbs to it. It took about a few days to repair it. After that was done, the Junker wanted to leave. Yumemi offered to escort the Junker to his car. The junker couldn't help but accept it.
On the way to the car, Yumemi wasn't used to seeing the lack of people here from the war that happened 30 years ago. She would talk about how much she loved the rain because it attracted so many customers. But since the outage of the electricity during the projection with Miss Gena, which would never come back, nothing has been working. Yumemi's battery was gonna run out in 4 more days with no way to charge it. The Junker spots something. It looked like a machine gun turret with spider-like legs.
The Junker told Yumemi to stay put. She did... at first, for a while, but we'll get to that in a bit. The junker tried to take out the turret because it was blocking a wall passage they needed to go in order to go back home. He missed his shots, causing him to get attacked. He was also doing this because he wanted to take Yumemi with him out of the tone and work with his other Junker workmates. Claiming they are waiting for her. So the turret would constantly fire at him. He managed to shoot its leg off. But it would explode a bit, causing the Junker to recoil from it, breaking his leg. So Yumemi came and stood in front of the turret. The turret target locked on her and fired at her. Causing her lower half to separate from each other.
This is where she didn't obey about staying put. But, she did this to sacrifice herself for the Junker. She was still alive for a few minutes. She looked over at the Junker, lying on the mud floor, asking if he was okay. Despite his leg being broken, like how the novel described it, he said he was fine. The rain continued to drop on her. She couldn't see him anymore. She was losing her vision. She then talked about how she wondered what it would be like if she could feel emotions, saying that she would probably be crying in a situation like this. The raindrops continued to drop on her, making it look like tears, (that part honestly tore me apart.) Then, a recording plays, showing silhouettes of people she worked with 30 years ago. Her staff team went on a vacation that could take forever to return back from, sadly, they never returned, looking at the state of humanity, at least. And then the music box plays... Saying her famous line "

She then repeats this and dies slowly.
Keep in mind, this review doesn't go over literally every detail of the story, I just got done crying and finishing the novel at the time I am writing this.

Beautiful novel that made me cry like a waterfall. Would recommend this to someone who is looking to read a sad, short, and simple visual novel.ㅤ
What a beautiful, touching story. I've never played this kind of finish-in-a-single-setting, no gameplay, singular linear story (AKA a "Kinetic Novel") before, but I'm glad I did. If you enjoy sweet, gentle, touching, emotional stories that will warm your heart but then make you cry, then this is a great one.
The interface and design is very simple. There's not even an options/config menu, there are pretty much only 2 characters, the setting and scope is pretty limited, and yet, it's all just so perfect for what it is. The art and character design is very beautiful and will keep your attention. The music is also very nice and never gets old.
10/10 recommend, just beware of the short runtime.
Even though I had previously lowered expectations, Planetarian was still very disappointing. Although the end was great, the sheer repetitiveness and boring dialogue of the first three-quarters of the game made me just wish to get it over with. I understand why many people enjoy this, but Planetarian was not for me.

To me it kinda felt boring and repetitive, same with the drawings, nothing much was happening. I've played free vns for 30 mins with more content in it
A real classic by Key, and one of the safest choices if you want a short drama VN. Feels almost perfectly paced, with no scene wasted but also no part rushed. You might cry for the girl, you might cry for humanity, but even if you don’t cry at all, this is still a meaningful, thoughtful story to experience.
The central planetarium scene in particular is just beautiful, both in presentation and its thematic implications. Post-apocalyptic settings are a dime a dozen in modern fiction, but you’d be hard-pressed to find one that conveys the tragedy of "what is" vs. "what could’ve been" so well.
Also, while I can’t comment on the English translation, the original Japanese writing is great: rich, evocative, colorful yet not too flowery or indulgent (except maybe for a few military terms here and there).

i started crying, then i started crying more, then i started crying even more. beautiful story. i can't. if you play this, do it in one sitting. do not take a break, i'm serious.

oh my god
planetarian is a short title (4~ hours long), yet packed with emotion. The two characters form an unlikely bond in the midst of a desolate world that grows into a story about all of humanity, and simultaneously just themselves. The art, music, and writing all combine to make this one of the most moving VNs I've read in a long time.

If you see planetarian on sale, don't think twice. Just buy.
Decent short VN. If you've read anything by Key before you can probably predict the story structure, which leads to not really caring in what are the supposed to be the big emotional scenes, for me at least. However I will say that the world building and sense of atmosphere is phenomenal. Everything feels so real and organic. Lots of the little melancholic moments greatly benefit from the atmosphere. You really are transported to another world.
There is also a very short prequel story that got an English release for the Switch, so we might see that on steam in a bit.
