Not very well put together unfortunately, I couldn't get more than an hour into this
1)On the one hand characters die in 3 days without food. On the other they can defeat 5 soldiers armed to the teath with bare hands. 2) "Please sir i have to eat another bear" syndrome
Trash.
While the concept is admirable, there is little substance behind Displaced. The bare story does not have enough emotional punch to embody the themes it is going for. Many of the same gameplay events repeat countless times and can be more or less successfully solved in the same way. The one redeeming factor is the art, which does have a bleak but beautiful quality to it, but it's just not enough to make up for the flaws. I had high expectations for Displaced because it was released by the same publisher that brought Beholder, which was a far better execution of this type of "real world dystopia" narrative, but ultimately Displaced is a shadow of what Beholder was.
This was a good game but very flawed. Here are my thoughts:
1. It was refreshing to once again play a game where you are an ordinary surviving trying to survive a war much like This War of Mine.
2. I liked the simplicity of having to simply find a way out of the country which is still very high-stakes when there is a war happening.
3. The game felt ambitious in that it didn't rely heavily on combat. I felt the concept of being a refugee was strong enough.
4. Graphics were good enough which made the game load quickly. I really love that it doesn't requite a heavy duty computer even though my rig is pretty heavy duty.
Now here are the negatives:
1. Barks/flavor text is too intrusive, it stops game play and it is repetitive.
2. The story is pretty much non-existent. If you put a good story on this, wow, I could see this taking off.
3. They take away control from the player at certain points. Look, I know how hard it is to develop games because I also develop but in a "choose your own adventure game" you must give the player the ultimate power to choose. Don't skimp on that choice stuff.
4. The game is really short. I'm okay with short games but I would like to some replayability.
If you are a gamer looking for a fresh take on the survivor genre this game (at a deep discount) is worth a try. What shines about this game is that it is just different. No zombies. No he-man soldier heroics. It's just pure refugee on the run vibe and and I love that about it. But here's the thing, this ain't AAA game dev so don't judge so harshly. It it barebones, knuckles to the ground, pull yourself up by your bootstraps type development so you're not going to get too fancy with graphics and sound design. However, I do have to say the sound design was pretty decent. While this game was far from perfect, I believe we need to support developer who dare to do something different. I will definitely be buying the next game in this genre from this developer. Keep pushing forward!
I am 32 years old.
My ex-wife and I have a daughter together, and we adopted our son together. Both are now 4 years old.
When we were going through our separation, I felt lost and unhappy. I was self-destructive. One day, I was so angry with everything spiraling out of control that I punched a concrete wall in a moment of overwhelming emotion. This resulted in breaking my fifth metacarpal in my right hand—the hand I worked with, played games with, and used to carry my children to bed—the hand I desperately needed to ensure I could continue providing.
Upon learning the severity of the self-inflicted damage, I became almost suicidal. Keep in mind that just a few months before this, I was the happiest man, with no history of depression or anxiety. I had never experienced anger outbursts, nor was I the type to break down and cry, but I was in a tough situation that truly prevented me from seeing the light on the other side.
With nothing better to do, I looked for a game I could play WITH ONE HAND while recovering. Somehow, I stumbled upon this game and read some of the comments. I decided it was worth a try... I must admit I didn't beat the game, nor did I play as much as some of you. In fact, I may have played this game for only a day or two. That being said, after doing so, I had a new joy and hope for life. I managed to leave behind the pain and suffering that had been thrust upon me. I could experience the joy and happiness of other people. I relaxed for 5 ♥♥♥♥ minutes listening to this music, long enough to realize that I would be okay.
After realizing this, I turned off the game and went back to work. My hand hurt a lot, but I was motivated. I stopped feeling so sorry for myself and became the father I needed to be at that moment, not the weak boy I was behaving like.
Today, I am close friends with the mother of my children. We don't fight, argue, or say hurtful things to each other. We are parents and friends.
Now I have 3 children. My third child is, wait, ALSO 4 YEARS OLD. The woman I am with was going through a very similar situation at the time of my separation, and we just unexpectedly stumbled into each other's lives. We have been dating for a year and are very happy together.
Moral of the story: you never know what life has in store for you, and if I had given up when all odds were against me, I wouldn't be where I am today. This silly little game helped me realize that.
Thank you.
It's a game that goes for the concept of a small group of survivors during a war trying to get out as unscratched as possible out of said war. The concept itself may be solid enough, but unfortunately, it has not been done well here; the game's something of a... Bone with not enough meat on it; there's not as much content as there really should be here, I feel. Mind you, what content there is in the game is reasonably good though. But there are other games with similar themes/concept as this with more meat on the bone that you could probably go for rather than this one though... Aah... It's at times like this I wish Steam offered more options than just a thumbs up or down. But as it is all we get here, well... I'll give it a thumbs up, but recommend that you get it during a sale or the like, and even then, prepare for at least a bit of disappointment. If nothing else, a playthrough or two won't take up alot of your time, nor does it take up a lot of space on one's HD, so there's that...
Simple and repetitive quests, same messages (for each meeting with another group when you greet them, a kitten pops up from one of the other group member's jacket and it defuses the tension; seems like in this game everybody carries kittens - its fun first time when it happens, but not every freaking encounter).
The game has potential, but is under-designed and seems unfinished or finished in a hurry.
Btw, picking escaping by boat, in the end crashes the game. Always.
It's budget "This War of Mine". If you're a fan of this genre its decent for the price. Get it on sale and on sale ONLY.
What happens when one side only wants war and you have fight back and military thinks well you know we just kill you all off because stupid fighting got to boiling point. More to point where everyone couldn't get along and now more of fact life can't get to normal.
Sadly I don't think if this based in reality but if does there could been more zombies and biological weapons in play.
Like: game time and use was easier then another one.
Dislike: took while figure out how use fight interface and choices.
Personal opinion : wish there dlc like more maps and probable events add to game.
Very minimalistic, lack of variation of choice- most give almost same outcome. I was expecting the character interaction to have at least some difference on each other to give a little bit of life for the character rather than just being a cutboard character for the game, like different dialouge for them, different interaction, what would happen if I pair ex cop with a thug? Would they fight because their different ideology in the past? But no, none of those happen, shame.
Other than that? I like the artwork, it's pretty and fits the game well. The music also melancholic. Good concept, bad execution. There were so much potential for this game.
Displaced is an unfinished, unpolished game, with close to no tutorials where your main objective is to click around a non-intuitive, almost non-interactive interface.
If they just finish the game, I'm sure it'll be quite good.
Currently however, it is not finished (even though it seems to have left Beta).
E.g.
- when resting, the game will not pause so that you can cook a meal when your people get hungry (which tend to cause everyone to starve to death, despite having loads of food).
My GPU burn when i start this game. Vsyc not working in thins game....
My short experience with Displaced left be best describing it as (1) a choose-your-own-adventure game, (2) with some exploration elements when on the map/travel screen, and (3) a (very light) auto-combat system largely tied to its light take on inventory management.
It is unlikely to satisfy anyone looking for deep strategy, but it does a fair job at making your choices matter, and telling bite-sized narratives that succeed in their emotional impact: very human stories in a country ravaged by war.
Good game!
A game with great potential! Let's wait next updates.
The game is okay at the moment. It bears a small resemblence to that of Neo Scavenger.. Only without the crafting part.
It's basically a game where you move your group of survivers around a large map. Scavenge food and items, meanwhile trying to get to an airport for instance.
The mood setting is quite good. The gameplay is... blah... The combat part of the game is what disappoints me the most, this needs to be reworked or revisited somehow, the current system isn't that fun.
When reaching the airport in my tutorial, the game CTD'ed on me.
All in all the game has potential and is looking promising for what it is and tries to show. And it's only 5€ - And because of that, I'll recommend it.
