Open World Horror
Welcome to Hanwell, once a safe haven from the horrors of the world, now a cesspit of anomalous scum. Explore a dense open world of terror, every building a unique location with it's own story to tell. Strung together by the remenants of Hanwell.
Hanwell
There is something deeply unsettling about Hanwell. Unexplained noises, something in the corner of your eye or laying just beyond the shadows create an atmosphere that will keep you constantly on edge.
Monsters, known in the game as Anomalies, roam the streets. They occasionally get into the once protected buildings. What you do with them is up to you, be resourceful and pick up whatever you can find in order to fight them, if you think you can handle it. Or run. And don't look back.
There is an entire city to explore, featuring different environments each more distinct than the last. From residential homes, old English pubs, parks, stores, supermarkets and government buildings, all the way to the infamous HCPP research center. Each location holds its own backstory, leading to your arrival. Upon which there will always be something happening.
The Hanwell Council of Public Protection
When the anomalies first emerged, the Hanwell Council of Public Protection (HCPP) was formed to keep residents safe.Providing equipment and expertise on prevention and preparation. With the help of the HCPP, Hanwell became one of the safest, if most inconvenient places on the planet. But the council has fallen, you try to carry on as normal, but failing equipment and lack of warning has become a major issue. In addition to this, you are being stalked by a mysterious individual who seems to be everywhere.
The rest of the world closed the gates and left Hanwell to rot. Thus begins your journey...

The game has a cool setting, but the mechanics are too weird. It's very sad that it was messed up but missing to implement some basic, but very important features for enjoying the gameplay. Instead, the game has cool optics, a spooky Silent Hill like city and fog, but is annoying the player with lacking several things. Now it's for free, ok, it's still not a game I'd like to play too long.
Setting/ scenario
Very nice with many details like street signs, lamps, ATMs, etc. Even today it's looking good. The enemy design is a bit boring.
Combat/ weapons
Why losing your weapon upon entering a building? Of course the weapon is gone afterwards, what a boring and outdated thing. The fights are clunky, the enemies feel much more powerful, but not in a challenging way, more in a way your character feels like a clumsy ballon-man with a pizza in one hand and a broken weapon in the other hand, trying to balance on a thin line while eating the pizza.
Flashlight
The flashlight is draining the battery, you have to wait for an annoying amount of time to use it again, so outdated as well. Caring for the flashlight power in a dark game, really? I sometimes had to wait for the damn flashlight to replenish, this is a terrible anti-feature. Please remove these crappy "searching for batteries" / "auto-refreshing flashlight" mechanics finally, at least in dark games.
Objectives/ Journal/ Map
Did I miss the journal with my next target? Why not adding at least some icons on the strange map to let the player know which places he still has to visit in order to finish a task? At least a journal should be a standard feature nowadays.
Finally, the sequel is much better!
Paid for this game, now free.
Finished and thoroughly loved the excellent sequel "Beyond Hanwell" (don't miss it !).
So immediately installed "Welcome to Hanwell", but, in 2017 the dev was trying out his skills and sadly the game is uneven.
Great setting, no surprise, but a couple too weird mechanics killed the game for me.
To enter every house, you have to drop your weapon at the doors and enter unarmed.
When you leave, the weapon is always gone, so find another ASAP (they are all over the terrain) as you are momentarily defenseless.
Why ?!
Blocking doesn't work apparently ?
No health meter.
Flashlight works for a while (Float, 0.0000 full charge to empty at 120.0000, turns off), then it's unusable for another while (red icon) till it regens to full, but ok, except if you have to wait for it in a real dark place.
Got outside the starting lab, alarm of 1st foe sounds.
Instead of hiding, I run towards it, found it, kill it quickly (Steam says only 28% of gamers get to do that).
Continue exploring in the same initial big walled park searching for an exit for a while.
Game suddenly says "You went too far, it's dangerous, turn back", no previous comment.
Before I can even react, game kills me (no foe, I just died).
What. the. heck.
Uninstalled, forget it. Re-installed later, went to a couple houses towards the church, but ...
If the dev should change the disappearing weapon weirdness, I would play this at once.
Otherwise, the game will remain untouched.
Conclusion: Get Beyond Hanwell, where the dev shows fully his notable talents to brilliance !!
It sucks.
I'm having severe issues with this game. Years back i downloaded this game and had no issues running it. The game was very scary so i took a break from it. Now years later i re-downloaded it and it loaded fine, started a new game 2 minutes in give or take it shuts off on me and continuously does the same thing. I need a fix please i'm very frustrated!!!!!
Somewhere within Welcome to Hanwell there's a promising indie horror game wanting to be loved. However in its release state, it is plagued with bugs that are now very unlikely to be addressed. Combine this with some some very dubious design choices and awful fighting mechanics makes the game a chore to play. Shame really as it could have been much more if only it got a little more polish and refinement from the developers.
🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑 2/5
Do yourself a favor and just get Beyond Hanwell Its better than This game.
This game is really really rough around the edges. I Do hope that Steel Arts, Remakes This game with BH's Game Mechanics. I will say it was a real smart idea to make this into a Free to play game.
I'm still holding on hope for a reamke tho.
Total crap. There is no plot and it is so boring. I hope the third entry will be better. I cant even understand why this crap is made. This game is awful.
Hard to play a game with no audio and stretched UI because I accidentally clicked the wrong resolution and now UI is outside of my ultrawide... Absolute dumpster fire
Soo damn bugged & broken -.-'
