INTRODUCTION

There are three difficulty levels to suit any skill level: CASUAL, HARD and BRUTAL.

My Experience
Although I'm admittedly not a big roguelike/roguelite fan, I picked up Rogue Shift to play with a co-op partner that had limited time. I felt that we could do runs from time to time without him feeling the pressure of completing a long campaign.
Unfortunately, we were never actually able to get started. We were able to join each other's game, but once in the guest player was unable to move.
Although I didn't get a chance to play the game in co-op as I planned, I did see that Rogue Shift had a three-mission "story mode." I finished the first mission and thought it was OK, but the game is much more of a twitchy top-down shooter than a slower and strategic one (the latter being my preferred style). At certain points during the mission an enemy wave will begin, and enemies will begin pouring in from all directions. These moments are usually quite frantic, requiring liberal use of dashes and shifts to get away from enemies when the player becomes surrounded.
I could tell that developer Far-Flung Games spent a lot of time designing the levels for story mode, as there were many resources off the beaten path. However, with the lack of a map and the reuse of assets, I preferred keeping to the main objective to prevent feeling lost.
What I played of the story mode didn't particularly grab me, so I took quite a hiatus before trying the second level. Once in, however, the second level seemed to be generally similar to the first, so I decided to go and play something else.
👍
Played the first chapter of 3 for the story mode. Has 2 other wave modes that I only briefly tested 1. One is mode that looks like a standard wave mode (didn't play this) and the other is a wave mode where it moves you to different zones to fight each wave. Game played alright but ammo is limited besides your base pistol and the actual amount of content here seems really limited. The ammo limit is generous but the screenshots for the game hide the UI. There's also a limited inventory management part of the game where you only have so much space to pick up items. I played with a controller and it worked alright but the aiming with the right stick kind of annoyed me because it kind of lags behind your input to try and simulate having your character turn to face the direction. Overall, seems to be less action oriented than what the videos lead me to believe it'd be like and I don't think it'd be fun for coop (or fun for about an hour max) which is why I bought it.
Really good lighting, cool weapons, neat upgrades, intriguing story, and lots of little secret areas. Unfortunately, dying means you have to replay the entire chapter. Taking your time to find all the secrets and collect all the loot is fun, but only once or twice. After that, it becomes tedious and annoying. I wish there was some kind of midpoint save feature so I didn't have to replay the entire level. I'm ok replaying part of the level, but faced with replaying the entire thing, I'd rather just quit.
It's like Synthetik, but without the terrible Gears of War reload mechanic and more polish and content.
Which means it's a strictly better video game when compared to an already good video game.
Also the dev is a cool guy with a big wiener.
I’ve pleasured myself to this game. Great platform to build on. Idiosyncratic, eccentric, retro, not for everyone most likely but will certain entertain fans of Risk of Rain, animal Crossing, Dwarf Fortress, Halo ODST, that sorta feel. and dare I say… Diablo? May I be so bold!
I say Diablo not cus the game is similar gameplay wise. It’s not. I say it because it gives me the same sort of eerie 90s, up at 3am telling yourself you’re going to get at least three hours of sleep before school so it’ll be alright, Windows XP, T-Pain on the Radio, MySpace prowling sessions, Chris Hansen’s arrival, you know what I’m talking about. There’s a subliminal loneliness in this game. A sort of foreboding sense of alienation no pun. A feeling that you’re being watched. Stalked even. Sometimes harassed; your personal space INVADED. Set upon by massive insects in exceedingly claustrophobic spaces. The insects squeaking the exact same repetitive insect mantra as they wiggle towards you their exoskeletal, bulging thoraxes jiggling like Jurassic maracas. “eek”. “Eek”. “Eek”. “Eek”. “Eak”.
Hah! Eek they say. What is the meaning of this “eek?” I suppose it is inconsequential, for if the lava does not take you that eek will be the final sound to grace your ears aside from your crackling ribs and gushing entrails as they’re feasted on by the ravenous insectoid beasts. Alas pitifully curious human. Your pathetic end is met on some lightyears distant, barren and infested rock as you cry for your mother’s embrace only for your pleas to be drowned out by that belligerent and obnoxious refrain uttered from the venom soaked mandibles of these creepers… EEK!
Eek indeed lost conquistador. Just as your flesh was consumed upon your foolish pursuit of the fabled citedel of gold you called “El Dorado”, here you lie, digested again once more being ground to a pulp by the bile of some yet-to-be identified species of insectoid savages. So it is. Amen.
What you have to buy this game for is the SOUNDTRACK. Orchestral achievements of such unprecedented magnitude that Mozart would soil himself at the sound of. Choirs of Christendom colored by concussive bongo caressings. Firm but gentle. Astoundingly masculine. Ethnic even. Jungle sounds. All kinds of stuff. Too much even. But too much in the best way one may conjure in their most licentious and provocative fever dreams. An ayahuasca reckoning. Words fail here. Buy the game, listen to these Christly chants, and you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. You will never be the same. Just like me. I am no longer myself.
I am nothing now. But I am everything simultaneously. This game and this game alone may gift you with such cosmic enlightenment. Let this digital miracle be your courier to sprawling and most verdantly illustrious valleys of hallelujah which echo so resoundingly, so RESOLUTELY within the annals of this holy feat! Mere mortal! You come with all your depraved and lewd fantasies, so arrogant in your concept as to think that pocket of corruption you strain to conceal in the most secret crevice of thine eye will evade my all knowingness? To that I say EEK! Play Rogue Shift and we’ll see how long your masquerade maintains its flamboyance! Behold my transcendent tunes! WITNESS!
I’d give it a generous 7.
Tried again today and everything is working well and as it should. No idea why it didn't work the first time.If you're having the same issues fully restart the game and try again.
So far game is fun and good looking. I suck at games so I find casual to be challenging lol.
I would recommend at this point.
Original Review:
Started a casual story mode game and couldn't shoot with my x-box elite controller. Would only shoot when I pressed Y to chose weapon and released Y it would shoot once. Exited game and restarted. Then I could fire and blow up barrel to leave first area. Found a few items and teleported across lava found something and couldn't push A to accept it... no buttons would do anything. Keyboard wouldn't do anything either. Was able to shift Tab out and close game. Will try the game again in a week or so after needed patches.
Looks pretty though.
i remember playing this back when it was on gamejolt called Infinite Desolation. so glad its being turned into a full game, its great.
only downside as of now is that theres no graphics settings (no low/med/high), although that could change soon enough as its just an early access.
the game thought i found a secret area because i was against the wall blocking it (the area was on the other side), dont remember what section but it had a couple boxes and it was a ring-shape with metal walls around it.
gg ez play this game
Promising!
The game is extremely raw.
Pros:
- None.
- Maybe this is the first cut scene.
Cons:
- Shooting, it goes to the floor where the sight is, possibly as a crutch due to light isometry.
- There is no animation of the attack of the first enemies - just a shift of the object, maybe hence the name of the game?
- Bugs... You appear and if you get away through lasers, then the game hangs, does not allow you to restart the level. The only way to get back into the game is to log out and log in again. Then you come to the first teleport and it is no longer activated - the game is over. Was it possible to test the first level even before early access?
In general, don't waste money - it's not worth it.
Developers need to fix bugs urgently, at least those that block the passage of the game in the first minutes of gameplay.
This game does have potential all it would really need is some more weapon types and powers, maybe the use of vehicles and more environments to go through. Definitely worth the buy.
It's very good for what it is, reminds me of the gauntlet games. Unfortunately there are only two chapters and I have completed them both.
I don't often play twin stick shooters but i find this one quite fun. The Shooting is satisfying and enemy variety is good too. I will be following this game into v1.0. Would recommend this game!
