If you like Advance Wars and are hungry for more of it, this game is perfect!
A modern twist on the old Advance Wars turn-based tactics formula. There are some subtle, surprising changes to the mechanics, but I think they do a great job of creating an engaging experience for new and old players. I still have a lot more of it to play, but what I've played so far, I have thoroughly enjoyed.
As advertised, just like Advance Wars, except fantasy theme.
Can be difficult at times.
Gave it a fair chance but just not the fire emblem fix I wanted. To sum up with great brevity it borders more on tedium than tactics. The interspersed bits of spoken dialogue coinciding with text felt off. And the disposable nature of units rather than more dedicated characters with likable personality was a tad disappointing. It seems like resources may have been spread over multiple ways to play rather than a concise campaign.
Wouldn't call it bad but failed to grip me with that classic FE addiction.
I love the animations and artwork, but this game just plays way too slow even with some of the speed up settings enabled. It's a game I want to like, but I just don't have a lot of fun with it.
Seeing this go from positive to mixed breaks my heart a little. I played this on switch and still sometimes boot it up to play a game or two against the AI.
It looks great and plays great.
Wargroove came out back when Nintendo hadn't released a new game in its Famicom Wars / Advance Wars series for nearly a decade, and was a fairly interesting new take on those games. The overall gameplay is very similar to its inspiration, with some twists and streamlining made to the Wars series gameplay. For example, the equivalent to Famicom Wars' tanks are now cavalry units, and bombers are now dragons.
Each unit from the first Advance Wars game seems to have a direct counterpart in Wargroove, along with a few twists added (the anti-air equivalent is a mage that can also heal friendly units; the artillery equivalent is an archer that can move and shoot on the same turn, as well as counterattack from close range) and some extras thrown in (amphibious infantry and water properties!). There were also one or two brand new units added as DLC, though these don't seem to have too much impact on gameplay and aren't used in the main story campaign at all.
The biggest new changes Wargroove made from the Famicom Wars' series gameplay are:
- Each unit now has its own way of dealing critical hits in certain cases.
- Properties have HP like units that heals gradually over time, and they can be attacked by any offensive unit, They also counterattack the unit that attacked them if not fully neutralized.
- Healing units at properties must be done manually and siphons HP from the property. If the property has no HP left to give, you can't heal any more units there until it regains HP. (It still also costs money based on the amount of HP you heal.)
- COs are now commander units that are essentially walking medium-ish tanks. They have special "Grooves" (like CO Powers from the Wars games) that have various effects, and defeating a commander unit instantly defeats that army, just like capturing the army's HQ or routing the army would.
However, outside of the fairly solid core gameplay, Wargroove's campaign story seems ... forced, at best, and if you don't already have a basis for how the Famicom Wars series plays, you will likely struggle to get an understanding for how to play. A more detailed tutorial like Advance Wars' "Field Training" mode would have gone a long way towards helping players new to this style of game understand how things work without throwing them in the middle of a campaign and hoping they learn along the way.
Also, the Starbound cameos were cute, at least. Could we maybe get an improved version of that game someday?
Overall, it's worth trying if you have a need to scratch the Famicom Wars itch, but not really deep enough or different enough to surpass its inspiration.
Three acts in and a lot of it is a slog. I'll finish out the story but there are better games in this vein.
Wargroove is fantastic, I recommend to anyone who likes Fire Emblem or Advanced Wars.
Wargroove is a very fun turn based strategy game. I've heard it be compared to Advance Wars, though I have never played that series. The campaign is fun, the OST is really great, there's even a top tier vampire lady. The highlight IMO is the fan made content. There's a built in content browser, and the community made campaigns are a really cool idea. Would recommend. I own Wargroove on 3 different platforms, with the majority of my playtime across Switch and Xbox.
Kind of garbage. Bad controls, alot of mechanics are not explained.
Was hoping to see something similar to advance wars.
I beat wargroove. It was pretty fun but it's not the same as advance wars. Story was nice it kind of reminded me of Warcraft 3 traveling all over the world fighting and then temaing up with the differemt fantasy factions. But gameplaywise It's more like advance wars days of ruin. No overpowered co powers and unit stat changes. The campaign map and also the ranged units being able to move and shoot at same turn. Nothing wrong with the more balanced gameplay but I liked in original advance wars certain cos forced you to play differently based on their unit stats and powers. And sometimes super fun to cheese with super tanky kanbei units or flood the field with cheap Colin troops.
This game is very odd, early on you end up in an international incident involving queens and kings of different kingdoms (and political refugees at that), and after the misunderstanding is explained, all is solved with "Oops, sorry".
And the other side concludes:
"Oh, it's no problem, we accept your apologies."
After they battled each other and caused a relevant number of deaths.
Just like in real life, I guess.
Game's deeper than it looks.
Terrible interface, terrible unit info, and a bit too shallow at times.
gud
Overrate game. It is blend, gameplay has no depth
OVERALL - OK game, but feels like it lacks depth and any choices outside of the basic tactics
STORY - 2/5
The story is fairly basic with an ancient evil, chosen child, father who didn't tell you everything etc. Overall it works, but there is just so little real character building and no emotional depth. It does get you through the campaign but still it feels like an excuse to shove battles at you. The thing that bothered me the most about the story is the number of contrived battles from annoying misunderstandings.
GRAPHICS/ART - 2/5
The graphics were fine, but I also prefer higher resolution sprites with a bit more animation.
GAMEPLAY - 2/5
Overall I felt the game had two major downsides. There were no overworld choices or strategic layer. The few choices to make were just side missions. They gave you a bunch of commanders, but you never had any choice in what to use. Every single mission is set from the start and it doesn’t seem to matter how you did on your previous mission . So overall the campaign felt like a somewhat unconnected set of battles.
The other major downside was any sort of lack of progression. I felt the campaign would have been better with some sort of progress/leveling system.
UI - 2/5
I was very annoyed that the retry button still made you watch the cutscene over again. I don’t see any reason why it needs to. Otherwise the UI was ok. Nothing stood out.
Games I would Recommend over this one.
Banner Saga
Into the Breach
XCOM 2
Shadowrun
great strategy game!
For now, I really want to like this game. I really want to get into it. But idunno. It seems very hand-holdy. The story is pretty bare bones and basic so far and there isn't really that *hook* to get you you know? And my god the tutorial is so irritating. It takes away a great deal of freedom and control from the player and forces your hand. I love the pixel art style of this game, i love the vibes. And I want to really like this game but man. I just cannot for the life of me get into that same groove you know? Also it is SUPER clunky on mouse and keyboard. I don't know why Devs do this. You build the game on PC, make it feel good on a pc set up!
Excellent lightweight strategy game with different game modes for plenty of ways to enjoy. Lots of fun, and can be very challenging!
The level design in this game is exquisite. It satisfies the quality that the game is a sequence of interesting decisions. Sometimes at the very end, if you've done well, your choices are obvious and completing the objective takes a little time to mop up, but even then, sometimes the enemies surprise you.
I'm closing in on 100 hours played now, both in story mode and playing against my son on custom maps he's built, and I find myself arranging my life so that I have more time to play.
You may take that as an endorsement or a warning, depending on your ability to resist playing fun games.
Pretty cool Advanced Wars look-alike. Simple Stategy, no fuss. And you can play with friends. Wonderful.
Lite Heroes of Might and Magic or Advance Wars, this game is goated.
Meh
9/10
Emeric is not cheeked up
8/10.
Gameplay 8/10
Visual 9/10
Story 6/10
Music 7/10
Controls 7/10
Fun 7/10
Overall 7/10
Note: The game is way too grindy; sometimes you play a stage for 45 minutes just to lose in the last second and start from the beginning. Thats why i switched to an easier gamemode, wich was the best descision
Little did I know until many hours and many missions in that I was playing it on the hardest difficulty. This is apparently the recommended difficulty and I gotta say, it was worth it to play it on the hardest setting. It's an awesome challenge and totally worth it. A very satisfying, cute, difficult (especially if you want to get max rank on each level), and brain tickling puzzle game.
If you're into this genre of game, I recommend it and recommend you play it on the hardest setting. It makes it more satisfying. Love it.
As a single player game it felt very lacking, especially compared to "Advance Wars", but as a co-op game it is tons of fun. Be sure to also get the mod that allows you to play the campaign mode in co-op, as the official co-op campaign is quite short. What I prefer in "Wargroove" over "Advance Wars" is how you can check the exact stats of each unit.
It gets hard if you make a couple of mistakes. I wish it didn't have one way to win each level. However good experience and coop was fun.
Medieval Advance Wars with a cast of characters with loads of personality, a really fun game with huge variety of units.
Art Style and Music are 10/10.
There's a QoL thing missing and is the perma-enemy range outline, like Fire Emblem games since Path of Radiance. This would've made some maps a bit more enjoyable but my overall experience is quite positive.
Highly recommended if you like this kind of strategy games.
Games are too grindy. It feels like they take longer than they need to. Arcade isn't fun. The art is nice. The story is extraordinarily corny and kiddy.
I want to love this game, but I can't. The core problem is the difficulty curve. On a one-on-one fight of even numbers/income/holdings the AI cannot win against even a barely competent player. Thus, the only way to make it a challenge is to constantly pit the player against overwhelming odds. Kudos for the devs for making many plot-contrived reasons why we are always on the defensive, but it's tiresome to barely get $400 a turn to spend either healing or recruiting, when the enemy gets over 2k in free reinforcement spawns, has starting control over 3/4 of the map, and/or thrice our per-turn income.
