Dark Blood Chronicles is an okay but mixed bag of a jrpg, RPGMaker game, okay then the story. On a rainy day a young woman named Samantha wakes up from a nightmare involving her own death, but despite the strangeness of her dream today is just another ordinary day, after a brief conversation with her dad she heads to school only to discover that everyone's missing say for her friend Ethan.
As they try to figure out what's going on they are soon pulled into a strange world of monsters and tasked with defeating an evil entity from rising again, but in this strange world Sam will be confronted not just of her past but who she is as a person.
Alright let’s get into the likes, the story is very good with some good twists, turns and some nice buildup, some of the story also takes inspiration from the persona games with character exploration, I also like the themes of death, loss, grief, saying goodbye and overcoming the past, it was very touching and some of the story can be quite thought-provoking.
The gameplay was okay, it's your standard turn based jrpg were you fight random monsters, pick up items such as healing items to heal your party or pick up weapons or clothing to improve your characters, it's pretty standard stuff. But there are some things that do make it stand out a bit more like you can skip an counters with monsters by dodging their floating skull forms or if you decide to fight and kill all the monsters in a level you can unlock a secret room that gives you bonuses, there's also the picturemancy an ability were Sam can draws stuff and the drawing can come to life and either attack enemies or give her and her team a stat boost.
There's also familiar spirits that can aid you in battle as a fourth player with their own powers and finally there's these zodiac signs, you see you have to collect these warriors souls and each warrior represents the zodiac and when you equip them you can have different attacks and things that can give you and your party stat boosts or heal your party or even bring them back from the dead, which was a pretty good idea.
The pixel graphic art style is pretty good with a nice use of somber yet bright colors that really helps with the mood and look of the game. The levels are good; each one is somewhat visually distinct for an RPGmaker and is quite memorable from the cathedral to the warzone and Queen Nova's Castle. The characters are good and pretty entertaining, but their also a mixed bag sometimes they're very good, but other times they can be jackasses and can be really annoying and kind of stupid.
The enemies and bosses are good each one has their own unique look that's quite interesting and can be actually pretty disturbing, also some of the enemies and bosses you see feel inspired by other works like Final Fantasy and one enemy that's inspired from Griffith from berserk. The music was okay had some nice tracks to listen too, but otherwise nothing really to write home about.
Alright let’s get into the dislikes, the game can be very frustrating at times like let's get into the story, while I did say it was good there are some parts of it that just feel like it's there just to pad out the game. Like after watching a long cutscene you go explore the level only for a minute or two later another cutscene happens, I don't know it just feels unnatural and like it feels like there's too much story and not enough gameplay, it all really bogs down the game. There’s also no way to skip the cutscenes so if you die you have to see them all again.
Like I said about the characters sometimes they're quite good and pretty entertaining, but other times they can be jackasses, especially near the end they will stop to have a conversation even though that the bad guy is going to be resurrected vary soon or they get into little fights for no reason. Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying characters should be perfect, but they're a fine line of a character being flawed but good to just being jackasses.
Some of the enemies and bosses can be a real pain in the ass to fight like some enemies has this power to basically harden themselves or others and make them immune to most attacks which was really frustrating and a couple of the bosses near the end was also a pain in the ass, like Malahyde Flesh and soul both of them being quite annoying to fight.
Especially soul because he has this ability that he'll just refill all of his health when it's too low, so you have to be real careful not to activate that and worse he can activate it multiple times with his health is near depleted, that just got so frustrating and then there is the final boss and has so many overpowered attacks that if you're not at proper level it can just floor you.
Some of the achievements can be a real pain in the ass to get, the worst being the star achievement, it took me hours and hours just to get that achievement, luckily there were some talk on how to get them, unfortunately it was very vague and it still took me a while to figure it out.
So with that done with Dark Blood Chronicles is an okay but mixed bag of a jrpg, RPGMaker game, with a very good story, okay gameplay and good enemies and bosses, so do I recommend this game, honestly it's really difficult for me to recommend this game, but if you do decide to get it I suggest have a good amount of patience with it and that's all I can really say.
I remember seeing a different versions of this game... sadly from what I know it's been pretty severely cut for this final version. But still it's a great and atmospheric game and deserves attention.
~I edited/added a little more to this review as I saw a couple other endings and some other thoughts~ I stumbled upon this game looking for another dark themed rpg. The odd thing is that I found it through a post on reddit in a web search and not actually initially going through all the rpgs on this site (which I actually did before multiple times). Anyhow besides the point of how I found this game there absolutely does need to be more rpgs with a style like this. It does have a sort of Shadow Hearts vibe mixed with some other ideas. The animations, graphics and just the look and sound of the game is excellent. The writing is very good too. I like the interactions between the characters.
I played this game 100 percent blind (I was surprised to see there were some guides after the fact) There are some odd difficulty spikes here or there which did get me rather frustrated as wasted turns can really spell disaster for the party. Many attacks just do zero damage or very little. Since there are no random encounters (there is a training area in a castle but I just never bothered with it) I never felt very powerful for large parts of the game and would really have to use my best attacks to defeat some of the battles and just try and guess at what attacks would be effective. I may have been too hesitant to use my recovery items at first, but I was worried about running out of them and saved them only for emergencies which actually probably helped me in the next part of the game. You can save anywhere, so if you lose a battle it may not be a huge loss but....
I was very worried as once you enter the Realms of Agony you can't leave until it's completed and I accidentally saved my game after I entered (I did have several saves but they may have been an hour or so back). When I had made it to the boss I think I had no recovery items left but did manage to win. I did remember I could have used those material items to get more alpha mists if I was completely desperate, but as I said I managed to beat the boss. Just with the warp puzzles and some very tough encounters, I found the realm of agony appropriately agonizing.
This was also the time I realized that I had broken the economy completely as I could sell my 99 diamonds for essentially unlimited money not sure where those even came from. I did find a ring that give me more items after battle so maybe it had something to do with that. The fights going forward could still be challenging but I wasn't worried about running out of mp anymore. I did sell some gear before hand too to have a comfortable amount of money but I was just really taken off guard by not being able to leave so I wish I had bought more mp restoring items. Realms of Agony was easily the worst part of the game for me.
I guess the only other complaint I have is that the game goes into a fast forward mode where you get all these warrior souls at once and I didn't really feel like I got to play with them as much as I would have liked and the game claimed I fought less than a hundred battles (I checked it says 82) That seems really low. Maybe production reasons caused some stuff to be cut or scaled back because yeah I felt like there could have been more to explore in the dark world. Anyhow I got what appears to be the zodiac ending my first time and I am trying not to mention much about the story in here but the story is fine/good. The ending I got was nice. ~I reloaded my last save and beat the game twice more and I liked one of the other endings a bit more actually and explained some stuff more straight forwardly~ I suppose I could see myself replaying this game someday as I am curious about the other endings involving Ethan. I can't seem to get those.
Also gosh I missed a lot of secrets/familiars (as I look at the community page now, I actually had to look up the order of the zodiacs and was worried I wouldn't be able to complete the game hah) there were more resources and guides for this than I was expecting. I did find a lot of hidden weapons and items I just really struck out on most of the familiars.
I feel like I am getting kind of rambly now but for 10 bucks it was totally worth it, it just went by fast and I wanted to go to more places in this game. There is apparently a wilderness desert that is just unused? ~This was used in one of the endings~ So yeah Sam, Ethan and Aeon are all interesting and likable characters I just wish I got to spend more time with them.
Gamepad isn't working. characters are characters simply for the fact that they have quirks such as a boxer boi not knowing where the library is in the school he has studied for 4 years. leaving those there is no characters and every other character is simply the writer itself.
it has scaling problems that is usual to the other few j-rpg games i have played i don't know if this could have been fixed easily but in the end what you get is problematic so i will say that as well.
there isn't even a setting screen in the main menu i would have prefered the dialogue shown better but alas.
steam interface also didn't work including screenshots
i couldn't see any pro other than models being fluid to the entire time i played the game...
I love the game's pixelart, atmosphere (it reminds me a lot of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and Silent Hill). The story is also mysterious and captivating. There's a lot of extra stuff to do and collect. Some areas of the game are a bit poorly designed, since it can be hard to find your way (and there's no map, at least not that I managed to find).
Despite the gripes -- I'd love to see a similar game in the future, or maybe even a sequel? :P
This game's really good! The graphics and animation is smooth and suits the game's atmosphere. The music is also suitable. The story is interesting and the game is very slick and professionally done.
If you like the Persona series, you will fit right at home with this game. It's a fun, turn-based RPG. The battles go by quickly and the animations in battle are so beautifully done.
Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this game!
If you are looking for an old school style rpg look no further. Between the atmosphere and great soundtrack the game will make you want to not put it down. I hope this game gets some more recognition. Probably one of the better games i have played in a long time. Well worth the time! The sprite work is down right amazing. Not only does the game give options on a 4th playable character the battles are not easy. I highly advise you to buy this game right now and play it!
From the small amount I've played, this game is REALLY good. :) If you enjoy console rpgs such as Shadow Hearts, Grandia, or Dragon Quest, give this a shot. :)

Darkblood Chronicles is an intelligent and often thought-provoking RPG with a decent cast, a good story, and an interesting setting. It reminds me in a positive way of 80s Dark Fantasies like Labyrinth and The NeverEnding Story, and it adeptly serves as an enjoyable homage to many RPGs of earlier gaming eras, without seeming derivative, which is a difficult line to walk. If you like some substance to your games and prefer that they offer food for thought, then Darkblood Chronicles is a solid purchase.
I was a tester for the early version of the game and it was amazingly fun. While developed in RPG Maker, it doesn't feel like one. The story is unique and fun to play. This game deserves more people to play it.
Everything in the game is 100% unique, you will not see a single asset from the normal RPG Maker RTP.
Highly recommend you play it!
Darkblood Chronicles is a awesome blend of stunning retro graphics and clever storytelling. This game is not only beautiful it offers amazing gameplay with a cool battle system. This is truly is a great game!
This game was recommended by my freinds, and I have to say it is a beautiful game. The graphics in this game is well done. Characters and monsters are well designed. Some of the skills animations are fantastically done. I really like them! I can see that the game develper really put lots of efforts into this game to show perfection. The storyline is well scripted so far, really got me into it. Overall, awsome game. Havent really seen that many games share the same level of art as this one! Shall post another review after i finish the game.
I went in expecting "Cheap indie game", and while it certainly appears that way, the game was fun. The spritework is solid, the music is good, and the gameplay is quite good. It's packed with secrets to find, which I didn't find all of them. The puzzles are pretty hard at points, but (all but one) were solveable with all the resources immediatly available. It took about 15 hours for me to see all 3 endings, which is good for the dollars to time amount. Make sure to save frequently! There are no autosaves.
I'm not much for writing reviews regardless of how much I enjoy a game; however, it's a travesty that this game has no reviews at all. Besides the three playable characters, you get a monster tome that allows you multiple choices for your 4th character (creature in this case). I spent a lot of time grinding so that I could get and use all the choices, but I would say that I still got a good 20 hours with one playthrough.
There are a lot of secrets, multiple endings, custom animations, and a interesting and dark story. Games like these have become rather niche, but if you do enjoy these games this one is definitely a good choice.
