literally so good btw works great on steam deck
Very mediocre and underbaked mix of management and turn-based tactics game about gangsters in the Prohibition Era in the US.
The first couple of hours are actually pretty enjoyable, but after that there are almost no new mechanics being introduced, and the flaws that might've gone unnoticed before become more and more obvious.
- Diplomatic relations are very shallow, and there aren't many diplomatic options.
- There is no way to raid other gangs' rackets if they don't border the player directly, which makes no sense at all.
- Managing the "Empire" is a hassle because the player has to manually click through every precinct, every building, and every upgrade. There is no way to queue upgrades or build higher tiers of buildings from the start.
- There are only four kinds of "rackets" available for building, which is very limited considering the amount of available slots for building.
- The world map lacks any unique gameplay-relevant features, which make the world really bland and boring.
- The supply mechanic between your precincts is not engaging and could be realized in a more involved way.
- There is no way to speed up time on a strategic level, and there are quite a few things that require the player to simply wait for a relatively long time.
- After a few hours, combat becomes repetitive and there are a LOT of inconsequential fights against low-tier guards that the player has to fight to take over precincts.
- Autoresolve is absurdly unfair, which forces the player to fight even the battles that will take 1 or 2 turns to easily win (or to "save scum" for a few times).
[*] And many other small bugs and poor design decisions that frustrated me during my playthrough.
Many problems could be mitigated, and the gameplay could be significantly improved, but the game is abandoned, so it's very unlikely that we'll ever see any updates.
game good
Fun but becomes repetitive
As much as it isnt being updated anymore and no new DLC is coming, its still a game thats simple with decent combat but a good and addictive management system
i really want to love this game but the bugs make it very difficult to do so one minute you're a couple precincts away from winning and the next your save is nowhere to be found or your alcohol supply gets an NaN and you lose most of your income i hope they fix some of these extreme issues
Sure, it does get a touch repetative, but its not nearly as bad as everyone says it is.
Empire of Sin is one of those games you get obsessed with for several days, play for several hours at a time, then reject for a few months. You will always come back to it though, it's like a horrible turn-based drug. I love this game, I just wish there was more variety because once you get really deep into it, the game becomes a bit repetitive. At the very least I wish there were more mods.
Stylish but interesting only for first 10 hours. Then it's just the same routine over and over.
Despite a good concept the game just lacks depth and variability, quickly becomes boring.
I first experience with this game was on my Xbox, and when I noticed it was on sale, I couldn't resist picking it up. If you have a desire to embrace your inner gangster, this game might be exactly what you're after.
Although I feel it misses a few key features that could push it into the realm of a truly outstanding strategy game, it still offers a lot of fun. The gameplay is engaging enough to keep you entertained for a few hours, particularly if you manage to get it at a lower price.
Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone looking to dive into a mobster-themed adventure. The thrill of the game, combined with a good deal, makes it a worthwhile addition to your collection.
★★★☆☆
good game
W game straight up
Abandoned and not worth the money. It had potential but it got wasted. Only fun for a short time until it gets too repetitive and boring
it's okay, imo it's lacking engagement outside of combat which I guess is fair. Get it on discount
great game need more like it
I think It was a great game. However, I think it should be increase more facilities and function, even more city for player or open the multi players for online play the game. Thank the company make great game for the player.
need to fix the load save now i cant get into past same game
They seriously need to add more DLC or make a second game I've owned it on every console and now here just don't give up
It's not the worst games and I've completed a full playthrough, but I feel like they should've added/changed/balanced mechanics and content since its release and similar to other reviews, at this point of time I don't expect that to happen.
In summary, at the start the only challenge is that not all mechanics are well explained but once you discovered the golden weapons you're OP af. Once you reached mid-game (when you understood the mechanics) you basically steamroll through the game, while at the end my main boss could almost solo Safehouses (default difficulty) due to the "Chain kill" mechanic in combination with a golden weapon.
I then tried to go for achievements because to make it somewhat fun but 80% of the achievements is basic "Kill
Some minor weird bugs are in the game but it's not game breaking.
I'd recommend only buying it if it's on sale and if you're into turn-based combat.
They still haven't even released the 2nd expansion
It's a nice game for a few hours, but quickly becomes incredibly boring.
Fights are... okay, I guess, but the strategy part is terrible. There are too few rackets, almost no possibilities to actually interact with them. The only resource other than money is booze, which is produced in one building and consumed in others. Wow. Such depth.
In a game that focuses on organized crime, I also would have expected some kind of interaction with the police or politics, but nothing of that sort actually happens. It's trivially easy to just NEVER have any interaction with the police. Your gang literally goes around having gunfights on open streets and blatantly violating the law, but you never even have to bribe the police to go away.
There are way too few options for weapons, and every single upgrade boils down to a "have 1-2 points more damage" effect. The characters, similiarly, are mostly a collection of stat blocks with no "special" talents even for the most prolific gangsters.
Basically, this game is just WAY too shallow, which made me completely lose interest after taking my first quarter, probably never to return to this game.
im enjoying the game, im 5 hours in and am thinking more and more like a mob boss by each hour.
be the boss take over city easy
Broken, rugpull game. Tons of bugs that will ruin the game for you and stop a campaign in its tracks. Expansion 2 was sold but never delivered. I actually liked the game, thought it could be a little slow at times, but thought it had potential. Sadly now it is abandoned.
Really enjoying this, i can defintley understand why a lot found it repetitive but i really like the concept of it enough that i find it'll likely keep me going.
yes
+
Yeah see!
Awesome game. Wish there were more add ons and DLCs.
ok
It keeps me entertained and can lose track of time playing it. Worth the on-sale price that I paid.
its a interesting game. good mechanics and good graphics. there are still some bugs that doesnt allow you advance in the gameplay. but in general a really good game.
TBH the mixed reviews confuse me. This game is really fun. Lots of content and I honestly think the gameplay is incredibly fun. Personally I did not experience many bugs in my time with it so far. Mind you I DID get it on sale for around $12 so maybe I would feel different otherwise but overall it is a very solid strategy game with a cool setting.
I'm really disappointed in the Publisher. Most of the games they publish gets abandoned. Just a warning to those who plan to buy games from this publisher to only buy their games on sale if they want to reduce their risk of buying an unpolished abandoned game.
i be poppin shit fr fr no cap on jah no kizzy all fax no printer
Gangster Xcom mixed with Monopoly. The game is definitely worth 10$. Get as much Gangsters as possible and attack the bad guys. Rinse repeat. no need for tactics or boosting your rackets, Diplomacy is not even needed. no character customization, no attachment to characters for that reason. The game will give you a quick fix for that gangster itch but will leave you wondering if you should buy a xbox 360 to replay godfather. 2/5
Nice game worthy 10 € I paid it.
Fkn Rosie...
to date, ive played 575 hours.. the best maffia management business game ive played , be the BOSS, The DON, the KINGPIN that you u want, immerse yourself with 14 different mob bosses to play , dozens of hired gun/gangster characters with their own story lines.. and 10 in game districts that constitute the 1920s era chicago. 5stars from ME .
Biggest scam Paradox has ever committed. They abandoned the game before publishing the 2nd Expansion which is still being sold as part of Deluxe and Premium editions.

"A Mobster’s Paradise—Just Don’t Forget the Cannoli!"
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Empire of Sin is like if The Godfather had a love child with a strategy board game—one that involves a whole lot of gangster antics and a dash of luck!
From the moment I booted up the game, I felt like I was stepping into a speakeasy where the only password is “more crime, please.” The graphics are so smooth, they could probably slip a few bills into their pockets without anyone noticing. The characters? Oh boy! Each mobster is as colorful as a box of crayons left in the sun. I swear I’ve met at least three uncles who resemble them at family gatherings!
The gameplay is a delightful cocktail of strategy, negotiation, and the occasional “Oops, I accidentally sent a hitman to my rival's wedding” moment. And speaking of weddings, the best part is that you can marry off your enemies—or just make them sleep with the fishes! Who knew crime could be this entertaining?
I did have a minor issue when I tried to run a night club and ended up accidentally starting a mob war. But hey, in the world of Empire of Sin, what’s a little chaos among friends? Just remember, it’s not a real speakeasy until someone gets a pie in the face!
Overall, Empire of Sin is an absolute blast! It’s like being the star of your own gangster movie, minus the need for shady deals (unless you count those cannoli bribes). So grab your fedora, roll some dice, and get ready to rule the streets! You won’t regret it—unless you forget to pay your protection money. Then you might find yourself sleeping with the fishes... or at least on the couch! 🍝💰
Way too many glitches!
fantastic game
spamming offers and unskippable fights
***DO NOT BUY***
Still waiting Romero and Paradox to deliver Pre-purchased content:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1303314/Empire_of_Sin__Expansion_2/
Note to myself:
"Do not ever buy anything related to Paradox Interactive."
It's not terrible, like it works pretty well but overall it just hasn't been executed well. If you can pick this up for 75% off, then go for it, but full price seems too much. But it's not bad, and you will get several hours of fun out of it.
Pros:
Solid Gangster Theme
Decent Visuals
Combat is fun and exciting
Cons:
Lack of Character Customisation
Shallow Resource Management Mechanics
Repetitive Gameplay Loop
Sloppy Diplomacy Mechanics
I kept coming back to this game because I love the genre. And to be fair, I think Empire of Sin has an overall aesthetically pleasing set of presentation values. From the music in the background to the sound effects to the styling--you name it, this game brings a lot of style to deliver on its promise. I just like the look, feel, and so much about it. I think that's why I couldn't give up on it. I bought it and refunded it at least twice before finally picking it up as cheap as it's ever likely to get during the 2024 summer sales.
Beyond mere looks, I can also say there's a fair bit of compelling game play to be had here. The turn-based combat portion is enjoyable to a point. I like the variety in classes of criminal and the different skill trees they bring to the table. I don't think it all works quite as well as some other games with similar mechanics, but I've tried a couple different bosses and can honestly say there's room to play in different ways. I think my favorite is Sai Wing Mock for his ability to throw devastating poison bombs. It's such a powerful skill, especially when you can make him a melee brawler and do it again after three turns of cutting down fools with single strikes.
But here's why I have to give this game an overall yet qualified negative review: it just doesn't hold up for long. For the first six to ten hours I was still running into new things, learning, and enjoying finding my way in the gangster world. But somewhere around that time frame I'd pretty much seen it all. I hung on until hour fifteen because I'd basically been screwed over by Al Capone and swore myself an oath I'd put him in the ground. Doing so was very satisfying, though it was as long protracted battle that cost me one good gang member to wounds and another due to affairs of the heart.
But beyond that, there's honestly little to no reason to keep playing. I'm already clearly the most powerful faction in the entire game. Expanding into other neighborhoods and taking over more rackets has essentially become grunt work. And the promise of what's left for me is... well... doing that same thing over and over again in the next neighborhood and the next and the next and... I just don't think it holds up for long.
The bugs and obviously re-worked systems don't help either. I've run into a few real show-stopper bugs along the way. And I hate how some of the mechanics--like the adjacency requirement for precincts, the lines connecting one neighborhood to another, etc.--feel like they were added simply to pad runtime. For crying out loud, I'm playing as a criminal: I'm supposed to ignore rules and red lines in the sand! Sheesh.
In the final analysis, I absolutely got my money's worth. I paid something like $10 for the game and had a solid 10+ hours of genuine fun. I'm a real sucker for this genre of games, so if you're like me and are desperate for another title in this under-served field, then you could probably have fun with it too. But I think for most players it's just not going to be worth your money. There are plenty of better games out there. Especially now that the publisher and/or developers have basically stopped working on the game, even screwing people who bought the promised second DLC out of their money. The game isn't great as it is, and it's just not going to get any better it seems. What a pity.
great time killer, and a great new version of risk
if you already own it it is okay.
hell no do not buy it. it is mid. but if you already have paid for it then you can play it. it is playable. kinda fun. eh.
