I found it very difficult to get properly started in this pizza parlor management game. The biggest difficulty spike is during the beginning when you're trying to balance your finances and get a steady stream of clientele to your restaurant. You need to make about 4 or 5 recipes with the exact same amount of ingredients as shown in the manual. It's the archaic copy protection of the game, otherwise no customers ever come to your restaurant.
Start by taking a loan, renting a property and making those 4-5 recipes. Make a save after that so you can experiment past that point, start again from that save if you mess up the financing with the costly advertising and basic furniture that you need to succeed. Don't overstock ingredients by more than 5 days unless you predict a spike. Make new outlandish pizzas with ingredients that are currently trending to satisfy the customers. Keep making new recipes until you hit a jackpot and it doesn't matter if the pizza costs $25 if it scores high. Later on you can buy properties to stop paying rent, open new restaurants that are self-sustaining and bomb your competition. There are some mafiosi who regularly visit to extort almost all of your money when you progress to a certain point, otherwise they break your furniture. I don't know if it's optimal to pay them, but you'll be printing soon enough. Needless to say this is an unusual management game from the days past.
