Excellent game, finally a good manager game for hockey. The only issue is with coaching the national teams and the coaches. AI does not use coaches and it's kinda silly that coaches do not have multiple roles (like head coach AND assistant coach, or even scout, or be promoted from a smaller role to even GM).
Best hockey simulator available right now, with about 500 hours in EHM (including versions prior to SI) Franchise Hockey Manager 4 had me won over in less than five. Much more immersive and broader in scope. Since Sports Interactive has given EHM a lackluster effort this will be my go to game from now.
Pros for me:
- More immersive with player development and moods during the season.
- Intuitive choice of tactics and player roles that makes sense with the abstraction that game engines are.
- The sandbox of being able to start in any year since 1905 and forward. I guess some hockey fans would grit their teeth seing Yzerman going to Pittsburgh and Lemieux to Hartford in their game they started in 1973 though. :) I kind of enjoy it.
Cons:
- One of the few critiques I agree with that negative reviews have taken up are the crashes. It's not that bad though, I get an odd crash every 2 hours maybe. But with the autosave every month, and you can manually save at any time you feel you've had a good streak of games or fortune, you won't lose much time at all. Still too bad it's not fixed yet.
- Some concepts and related UI seems weird and underdeveloped and I hope they look into that, specifically training and player development.
- Some sort of tutorial or tooltips, it's easy to miss critical stuff, like that PP and PK have their own tactics to chose; maybe warnings for some league specific rules just to educate the player before he makes a mistake (like, I dunno, waivers, injury roster, offer sheets, etc).
- All values of players, especially since the game ranges from 1905 to 2017, may not be accurate (or you may not agree if you're a hardcore hockey fan), but then which game is... I'm fine with it and you can edit values within the game if you wish to.
- AI may be a bit bad with trades or strategy (Detroit had to get a goalie on an offer sheet (1st and 3rd pick) the same year they drafted Yzerman in real life, just because they didn't keep a goalie or two in their farm team).
Looking forward to FHM 5, I do hope they take this kind of yearly release seriously and really offer a proper upgrade and constant development. FHM 4 is a great game at any rate.
I got this game 75% off and i don't think i would play it even if it was free. The UI is really bad and it seems more like a game that's in early alpha than a final game. It's like there is no thought that went in to it. The sadest part is that Out of the Park Baseball is so good and this is from the same company. No clue what they are thinking releasing this as it is.
Wow, so I'm 90+ hours into this game, and I guess after this much time, I should give it a thumbs up. But there are still a lot of issues with this game. It's certainly not worth full price. Here's hoping future editions clean up all the bugs?
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Good
-------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a pretty good hockey simulation. You get the chance to be the GM and Manager of a Pro Hockey team, and the player ratings seem to be mostly up-to-date. And you can modify the ratings if you don't agree, or if a player ends up developing into a Superstar and you want to mirror that.
It's basically OOTP but Hockey.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
The Bad
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Apparently, from reading other reviews, if you try to do a lot of custom stuff, the game gets unstable fast. For me, I have only encountered one game breaking (So awful that you have to quit and start over from Square 1) bug. And that was when my Free Agent Money Available went negative. From what I've read so far, this was a bug from earlier years, so looks like it's still not fixed?
There are lots of weird little bugs in the game, too. None of them game breaking. Stuff like when you're actually playing a game, the Powerplay clock goes nuts, and keeps flashing the last 10 seconds over and over again. Or the game will announce someone got injured in the game, but they keep on playing.
Other things wrong in the game are just design choices and lack of flexibilty in the model. Why can't I change financial rules only on July 1? Why do top FA's sign so quickly to other teams? The UI for choosing Strategies and Roles for your Players is set up such that they keep defaulting to bad choices.
Like OOTP a lot of things aren't explained anywhere. Like I still have no idea if there's a difference between having one Assistant Coach or 20. I still haven't found an easy way to tell my AI assistant to scout all the hockey leagues in the world, so despite having 30+ scouts who aren't even busy all of the time, I'll still end up with many top rated players not getting scouted. The UI should offer to do this automatically, IMHO.
TLDR Version: There's lots of stuff that should be automated and lots of things you never get told about or can look at easily.
So, yes, I don't recommend FHM4. Not at full price. Wait til FHM5 and see if there's less complaints about bugs, etc.
Game experience first impressions
The scouting system is rather lackluster and unimpressive.
Drafting system needs major improvement. Game gives you a WAY TO SMALL predetermined list of players to select from and feels way to narrow to what players you can pick from at draft(with way too few players with any potential 2 stars and above).
Custom Game is 100% unplayable in it's current state.
When you make a custom game you are limited to making a FARM league, and 3 JUNIOUR leagues. Which in turn ends up only giving you just those leagues to have players come from in scouting or draft processes. In turn you end up with WAY TOO FEW players to select from in your scouting or come draft time(after 2 rounds of teams picking you have less than 2 pages of players left to pick from and the only ones left are all only 1 star potential WTF?!). I came to this realization CUSTOM GAME is UNPLAYABLE after giving it a try simming through 1 season.
Other issues
Frequent crashes(unaccetable, needs fixed)
Game save files not working(unacceptable, needs fixed)
Comparing FHM4 to EHM in their current state
The only thing better I would say in FHM4 compared to EHM is the game AI.
Everything else(minus the goalie generation in EHM) is better in EHM if compared to FHM4
That is not good considering EHM is a older game.
As someone who mostly plays sandbox and custom games, I returned the last one because it disappointed and this one isn't any better. I love OOTP but so far FHM has been nothing but a disappointment. I don't feel they care about this game or its fans since it constantly underperforms with this series. One of the most loved features in OOTP is the customization ability but for this game it hasn't been updated in two years when it comes to that. It has the potential to be a great game but ends up being mediocre because of it's limitations. I'll admit my standards were high given how OOTP is, in my opinion, the best sports simulator out there, but FHM has never come close and doesn't look like it'll have the improvement necessary to come close in the next few years. If you haven't bought this game before and like making fictional sports leagues or playing God with the NHL then it's great, but I can't recommend this to anyone who has 2 or 3 and mostly plays that mode and I'd caution anyone who buys this game for that purpose against buying future instalments. If, you're interested in the normal mode the addition of world tournaments is nice (although it seemed you couldn't expand the participating countries which is understandable but sucks, maybe next year), but other than that I can't comment on that mode.
Enjoyable if you're super into this kind of thing. Frequent crashes and achievements not working can be frustrating. Lots of potential, but feels like a work in progress. Skip if you're not a hockey guy; must buy if you're a hockey history nerd.
A 2017 game, CPU intensive, USES ONLY ONE CPU THREAD!! SO SLLLOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Not much has really changed since FHM2, FMH3. It still poor at showing data. You would think people who create data sims would at least display the data in different ways to help manage our teams. They have the data within the sim and yet we get the same spread sheet that fans can get about their favourite hockey player. They are still in a huge need for a Data Scientist to help them display their data better.
There is no quick graphs of how a player is playing over time, you just have to remember numbers. Make a change and see if it has any effects? Remember number that as the season progresses change less (as the data gets lost in the sample size).
i do a lot of gaming on this pc and i can count the number of crashs ive gotten on other games in the last 8 months on one hand, whereas every single thing i change in my custom game seems to result in a crash to desktop....which i could live with as i save a lot while drafting/customing lines/trading etc but then theres the times youre playing a game (not quick simming but taking the time to play out a game manually) and taking your time simming it changing lines, tinkering around based on how a period is playing out etc only to have the slightest line change etc in period 3 of a tight game crash you to desktop with no save....
i mean its 33 bucks for me and thats on sale =/ if it was 5, 10 or 15 bucks i could live with it but i expect a little stability from something thats 44 bucks regular priced in my country
If youre patient and dont mind crashes its pretty f'ing fun
edit - after putting some more hours into this game i can honestly say its really flawed in its current state and not worth it.....players who get serious injuries during a game will continue to play the whole game before the injury takes effect......you can just click play/stop repeatedly and have the game clock just disapear.......lots of things that dont make sense
Not right now.
Not in it's current form. Way too sloppy, way too many errors. And under polished.
If you want to support sports management sims, by all means. But OOTP needs to stop pricing this as a finished product and take a deep look at themselves, and decide whether they want this to be a money grab, or actually grow a fan base.
I own FHM 1 through 4.
This game is good and on the verge of being great. What I don't understand is why they can't implement a match engine similar to the one used in Eastside Hockey Manager 2007, a match engine where you could actually watch the game play out on ice. If they could develop a better, 3D match engine, the game would be significantly better and more fun to play. Great job though in a good improvement over last year's game, which was not good at all. Keep at it, gentlemen, you're on the right track!
Love the game for sure, but very disappointed paying 37 EUR for a game, which crashes from time to time and dosn't have the basic things fixed.
At this stage, i wouldn't recommend buying it and would just like my money back :D
The features keep on coming and if the developers are to believed it doesn't stop any time soon.
The new challenge mode seems a better alternative to last years Path to Glory(?), and for the competitive minded people it gives you an opportunity to compare your career to other players online. Unfortunately it is still not possible to play online leagues or import custom leagues, so if you're so inclined it might not be for you... yet!
But the one thing I have noticed in particular this year is the increased robustness of the game, it has crashed only once on me (in a historic game, pre-patch), which is greatly improved compared to former years.
All in all I recommend this game, but there are still limitations, especially if compared to OOTP Baseball.
Best modern Hockey Sim available at the moment. It's a lot of fun but first let say I am hardcore EHM player dating back to before the Sports Interactive days when it was basically a one man garage project. That said, FHM4 is a lot of fun but there is still some quirkiness, clumsyness to the interface.
I mean there TONS of interesting data in the game but not a lot of it is intuitive to find. I feel like I have to fight the interface to find what I am looking for and at some point I just give up. It would be nice to have an easy to find Average Rating of players, highlights on news that are related to our teams, colored visual stats improvement as the player develop. It is still a work in progress in a way of rendering the statistics presentation in a more friendly manner.
Otherwise the game does a nice work of simming the games with what seems to be accurate results, you can go totally crazy with the tactics as theres seems to be endless combinations.
Still pending tho is the horrible coaching bug in wich AI coaches (if you dont coaches game yourself) dosent seems to be able to adress talent correctly when making lines (example: Montreal Canadiens Glachenyuck as C on the 4th line after Mitchell and Danault). But they are woking on it.
EDIT: I can only speak for myself but 60 hours strong and this game never crashed or freeze on me. Also the processing time is nowhere near light speed but it is more than adequate assuming you dont run it on a potato.
TLDNR: Overall I recommand because seriously right now there is nothing else. Clumsy interface. Work in progress. Still fun, Tons of options. Hopefully couple of nice patches turn this into a real killer but as of right now I give it 2.5 3.5 (with all the recent patches and fixes as of January 2018) ability on 5 potential.
"Do you recommend this game?"
NO, not at this price and not in it's current state.
Do I like the game and see the potential?
YES, this sim has a high ceiling and I hope and pray I can change this review to a thumbs up sooner than later.
Seriously... when you are charging $35+ for a game, at least have some fundamental standard that you prioritize. I don't want to play a simulation game where basic things are broken like sorting on certain columns, or a back page function that doesn't remember your last configuration/filter.
If simulation games 20-30 years older can do exactly what you're trying to do and have done it extremely well in the past, that should be the "standard" you try to at least reach before you present anything furthermore. Zero excuses in my opinion.
Aside from the headscratching "Dev, why can't you not sleep just for a night and fix the most obvious unsightly detractions", this simulation is very rewarding and I am actually enjoying the brunt of the mechanics.
Simple obvious polish is all that is needed, for instance when both teams are the same trim color, the text labels will use the same color for both teams, which is annoying and confusing when you are trying to immerse yourself in the details, it's like trying to watch two teams wearing the same uniforms. Also a game puck indicator that seems to follow a hidden random agenda to what the play by play is actually saying, or penalty countdowns which start fine, but executes in a completely 'F- failed function coding class' buggy mess.
Plusses:
- Real players/teams. The NHL/PA licensing is great and this is the type of sim I will love to tinker around with in various historical fantasy tangents
- Engine that is more believable than smoke & mirrors at this point. Text play-by-play retty much reminiscent of Championship Manager 01/02 (Football Manager before it went 2D) and that era of sports sim engine.
Minuses:
- Unpolished, untested, sloppy coded front-end, broken functionality that is there but not working properly under various contexts
- Setting a player trade with a team and finally clicking "Offer trade" leading to home screen with no indicators/prompts/results and then going back to the trade window manually has the same trade ready to go/repeat into loop-of-nothing. Seriously, how the heck do I trade a player?
- Resolution settings seemingly not working at all (fixed default regardless of what I set including after a restart)
- Momentum meter doesn't seem very realistic or in tune with the action being portrayed
- Puck indicator that seems to have a mind of its own compared to the action being portrayed
- Game engine playback settings that don't stick and have to be reset every game
- No player comparison
- No line presets
- No steam cloud save
(my opinion after open-minded 6 hours of casual play)
"Very disappointing. I had high hopes, but it seems like they're cashing in on name and reputation, with a horribly unfinished product. Even in the interface is lacking some of the basic functionality that should be directly transferable from OOTP."
That was my review of FHM2. While some of the most egregious issues have been addressed, FHM4 is a disappointment nonetheless. The interface is still vastly inferior to OOTP baseball, highly cumbersome in some areas, and lacking basic functionality that should be obvious for a franchise management sports sim. I won't "throw this one away" like I did FHM2, but it will be buried on the shelf for a while to see if any improvements are made. FHM4 feels like a $10 "early access" title, not a $40 final product.
I have played quite a few hockey manager games, but FHM4 has really stood out as a drastic improvement, making it the best hockey manager game out there currently. The multiple gamemodes and historical accuracy in this game are amazing, especially the historical challenges. I took on the 1969-1970 Bruins challenge to win 3 Stanley Cups by 1978 which I achieved by being graiced upon by the hockey gods to have a moderately-healthy Bobby Orr throughout his entire career (he retired at 32 still, lol).
Overall this game is very enjoyable and the NHL licensing makes it that much better/immersive, FHM4 will improve year after year and will keep evolving to an even greater hockey manager.
Finally a hockey simulation that gets it right! I am simply overwhelmed at all this game has to offer. If you love hockey, I mean really love hockey; this game should be in your possession right now! I want to write a long review and explain all the improvements made from previous versions and how much better this game is compared to eastside hockey, but I want to get back to playing. I may edit this review later when I have more time but for now, this is nearly perfect for me. It is by far the best sports game on the market!!! Thank you developers, job well done!
UPDATED Review:
I've logged over 220 hours now so i figured i would update my review since first purchasing the game. The game is awesome, period! The game has never crashed for me, leads me to believe it is the hardware, not the software. You cannot go wrong with this purchase, replayabilty and depth of managing, easily makes it well worth the money.
I enjoy starting unemployed and working my way up to the pros. But it is nearly as enjoyable to manage my favorite pro team. A lot of freedom to adjust the game to what you desire. I love this game!
Since the last version of this title that I played (v2 iirc) its turned the corner from "too rough" to "a few rough edges that don't detract too much from a great game". The rough edges are stuff like your team's name not being highlighted in lists or on the sim screen, mac gestures not working, and the menu's taking some getting used to which all in all reminds me of mid-early OOTP releases. My other minor quibble is speed but I'm playing on a very underpowered machine (old MBA) so that's no biggy, and its perfectly stable, no crashes. Really this just makes it a perfect game for playing along with while watching TV etc.
Even as a casual hockey fan the game is extremely engaging and immersive. The tactical roles and strategy system in general really clicks for me. Again there are some minor UI issues here when trying to build from scratch, but having your assistant recommend things works great and again is pretty similar to how I manage thing in OOTP.
Highly recommend!
Love the game, finally getting over the old tried but true East Side Hockey.
Loads of improvements that help ease of life, good step in the right direction.
It pains me that the sim speed has not been improved at all, as that is many peoples gripe, aswell as my own biggest. Almost to the point of making me not reccomend, but alas, enough other things have changed to make that silly.
Great game overall, definitly taking steps in the right direction. If the sim speed is improved in patches, it will easily overtake EHM and become my favorite hockey manager on the market!
