the novelty of the old OS interface wears off quick, leaving just a repetitive slog of a game
Nearly 8 years later and I still come back to this game for a run every now-and-again.
This game has that rare mix of novelty and genuine fun that keeps it bubbling back to the surface of my mind.
If you're looking for some old odd indie gem to kill some time this is a great little pick.
funny concept of a game, it's pretty charming
became a demon-lord and was crowned king for slaying the eldritch monstrosity by stunlocking the thing forever
fun times
It's a fun arcade game
Fantastic RPG that provides a unique interactive twist. Decent amount of content, decent amount of variability. Can get repetitive though but you won't feel it until 10-13 hours in if you vary your game play through the different classes. Lots of things work for it and it was very enjoyable. Has quick time events and an engaging combat system. Quests are meh. Map and landmarks are meh. RIP Adult Swim
Very fun little game. I love the visual aesthetic/UI, that's kind of the main appeal of a game with otherwise very simple gameplay. Others have complained about the enemy boxes moving around to make them difficult to click on to attack; this IS difficult but I assume that it's intentionally so and personally find it a fun challenge. If you have trouble tracking a small button with your mouse as it moves around, though, this may not be the game for you. The one kind of frustrating thing is that virtually no benefits persist between runs, meaning that you can improve your understanding of the game (and your speed at clicking), but ultimately you're still starting from scratch every time with a lot of random chance on whether you even survive your early encounters. I would have liked to see a bit more ability to level up from one run to another, Other than that, it's a very charming (and brutally deadly) game that I'm enjoying.
Kingsway is an RPG with a really cool aesthetic. Everything has it's own pop up window, whether it's your character screen, your inventory or the enemy you're fighting. Ultimately you are just trying to get from the left side of the map to the right side, completing quests and dungeons on the way, hoping that you will be strong enough to beat the final boss when you arrive. Each individual run is relatively short at 1-2 hours, but you're encouraged to play with lots of different classes and achieve different endings.
I enjoyed my first run through decently enough and was excited to try different classes. The map and quests are randomised on each run which helps keep it fresh and there are lots of different builds you can try. There's lots of classic RPG dopamine like getting equipment upgrades, levelling up and upgrading skills, and coming back to town with a bagful of loot to sell.
Unfortunately after 5 hours I don't think I want to play anymore. The UI was just too frustrating for me. Looking at the screenshots you might assume it's a turn-based game but no - as soon as an enemy appears their attack bar starts filling up and they don't stop attacking until one of you are dead. So you scramble to attack, cast spells and use potions as quickly as you possibly can because every second you aren't doing something means you are going to take more hits than you might otherwise. To make it more difficult the enemy windows start moving around the screen so you have to awkwardly follow it around to click on it to attack. The enemy might also spawn additional windows, like a mushroom that spawns another baby mushroom to attack you, or a bandit that throws an explosive at you which you have to click on to dodge it. Several times I died from how frazzled all the windows made me. E.g. I get low on health so I look at my potions bag to see if I have anything to drink, but right at that moment the enemy window moves over my bag and prevents me from clicking on one. Or an enemy spawns a projectile that I need to click on to prevent taking extra damage, but the projectile window immediately goes behind the enemy's window and I can't click it. While I'm scrambling to pull windows around, the enemy attack bar is still filling up and doing damage to me.
Quite a few times I died and didn't feel like it was really my own fault, and genuinely made me feel a bit stressed out.
It makes me think of Loop Hero, but all the exploration & battles are manual instead of automatic. Your starting class and the gear you find in a run is very impactful, but your game knowledge is arguably more important. One of the few turn based games that make you actively play, sometimes I am even mashing click once my attack becomes quick enough.
I enjoy this game in small bursts. It's pretty linear for a roguelike imo. There's not a lot to this game content wise, you'll find yourself replaying content after the first run. It's lacking on meta upgrades (ones that persist between runs).

There was a lot of potential here but frankly the game is good for maybe one or two playthroughs. It's an interesting premise but just plays like a demo. Definitely wait for a sale.
Played 100s of hours over years on twitch gaming, finally bought it on here to get the update from half a decade ago. Anyways one of the greatest games I've ever played in my little life.
it looked easier in vinny's full streams
ı hate dying... but now ı know ı would be a terrible adventurer :(
HIGHLY creative roguelike that captures the esthetic of the old windows operating system very well
Rules
Really well made game. Turns out that kingsway is not a good sleep substitute. It was difficult to wake up in the morning after playing late into the night.
Really fun and a unique presentation, Very nice game.
It's good
Honestly, one of my favorite games of all time. The management aspects, the unexpected depth, the gameplay loop; it really is just perfect. I would recommend this game to anyone, and for only $10 usd, there is really no excuse not to play such a splendid game. (:
Basically a FTL game in a medieval fantasy setting with a desktop UI. Aside from some cool touches like dodging traps/spells by closing a moving window, there are too many clumsy and tedious bits to this that I cannot recommend it.
Extremely unique and charming little roguelite adventure.
Appreciate the aesthetics. This isn't for me, but it's a charming little game in its own right.
Neat little game. I would recommend to anyone that knows how to use a computer. Keep your stuff organized
Listen. I like roguelikes. I enjoy them. I like rolling the die and seeing if I can collect enough abilities and items to crush everything in different environs with different rules.
Kingsway breaks most of the ones I know by making a desktop the setting for everything. One window has the overworld. One has your items. One has your stats. Random encounters are moving popups that you must click the attack button on.
Old loading bars are your waiting times for when your attack hits and also showing how long until you go from point A to point B. You can also change how large or small the world is before starting, as well as how fast enemy windows move and how fast the time moves in-game. If you die, you can choose to bury the character on the main screen and choose one item they were wearing to make a "memento" for a future profile. The character portrait has a level of customizing, too, so that's fun, especially when goofing off with the randomize button.
At the time of review, I've put in over 30 hours and got everything Kingsway has to offer. I'm satisfied, but jeez louise a few of those endings can be brutal if you're not prepared.
Anyways, Kingsway is pretty good. 👍
Fun wittle game, runs last about 1-2 hours per run, and build variety is pretty cool.
Some amount of playtime is not reflected because Steam Deck was offline.
I think the idea is cute, and relatively well-executed for what it is, but it's just boring and does not do enough to engage the player or stand out. The things that make it unique and intriguing are the very same things that make it tedious and irritating to play, especially on Steam Deck.
I never tried to play it on desktop, but again I couldn't find any motivation to. Why would I choose to play this instead of, say, Runescape or Caves Of Qud or some other random ARPG/CRPG/roguelite? What's the appeal?
When deciding what I should play from my massive library, I gave this another shot, and regretted it. It's not idle enough to be an idle game, and it's not active enough to be a "real" game. Losing didn't make me excited to try again, it made me relieved to be done with this game.
This game rules and was saved from destruction. You should play it.
Im after 1h of gameplay, and wow this game is awesome
Fun :)
Pleaseeee give me another game in this series. Its so unique and I need more
I wish I could dual boot kingsway
So imagine an NES/SNES era RPG, but it's a Windows desktop. It's a clever idea for a game. But you really have to like futzing with windows and inventory to like this game. And it's not like it's a chore, but it's also not really fun. It's innovative, but not fun, except for the novelty of it.
Started playing this game when it first came out when my brother and I shared an account and went for hours on different characters. Made a new steam account and this was one of the first games I got.
I love playing every minute of this game since it's a huge change of pace and style from the standard AAA fps. The replayability is perfect. Each character you make is an opportunity to unlock new character types for your next run, and when you either die/finish your run, you can take 1 item to give to your next hero (or villain, to each their own). There's tons of ways to alter your playstyle. Inventory management and organization is especially key. Being overwhelmed by your own tabs instead of the enemies is not the way you wanna go out. There's ton more to talk about on the game in terms of content but you can browse around other reviews for that.
Can't recommend it enough. 10/10 but would love a spontaneous update every now and then to add some new items for us players who have dug very deep into the game :)
the most nerdy game you'll ever find. unusual ui, gets a bit repetitive in few hours
i cast apocalypse 10 times killing you instantly
the only thing that this game is missing is steam cloud support
This game is surprisingly addictive. I really love it.
thank you for making an rpg that doesn't age me by 50 years during every combat encounter.
