The only remarkable thing about this game is that it has the lewdest name of a non-adult game in my library. Early VR was completely overrun by rail shooters and this game wasn't helping the situation. The real problem though is this isn't even a rail shooter but a light gun game; I'm pretty sure someone already had this game built for an arcade then ported it to VR because it's definitely missing something to make it palatable for any audience. Either way, it's just another boring VR shooter that misses the mark and isn't worth playing.
If this was designed for arcades, where is the continue system? The difficulty seems scaled around using a light gun and not a VR controller because you need to land consecutive headshots in order to survive the walls of enemies the game throws at you (even on the easiest difficulty). Even with good aim this is difficult because flying enemies only have hitboxes on their bodies (and not their wings) and all weapons use slow projectiles (except for the shotgun). Enemies do different amounts of damage but generally speaking you can only take 3-4 hits before a game over, with the only way to heal by selecting a heal reward at the end of the wave. Even then, this only heals for about half of your health.
The end of wave rewards also include three options for support fire, including a proximity mine thrower, an anti-air rocket launcher, and a close-range minigun. The problem with these is you can only have one at a time and your ammo isn't carried over if you decide to switch. There's also no wave number or difficulty scaling for the amount of ammo you get, making them all pretty niche compared to the healing. They should really just have infinite ammo considering the amount of enemies that spawn because the weapons present simply aren't effective without some kind of backup.
Wilde's arsenal has some cool ideas, like the the harpoon gun/sawblade combo that feels like it was ripped from Painkiller, but almost all of them feel intentionally underpowered. The nailguns for example have such insane recoil (and unusable spread) on rapid-fire mode that they feel like they're trying to rattle out of your hands. Yet the laser sight mode's rate of fire just isn't fast enough to deal with the number of targets coming at you with how little damage per nail that they do. The only weapon I was able to get to a boss with was the shotgun because it comes with a shield that blocks everything, it's the only hitscan gun, and the secondary firing mode turns it into a rifle. With the amount of birds and fish pooping and spitting on you (which blocks your vision for a good five seconds), this shield is the only way to really survive above easy difficulty since you can only physically dodge so much.
There's really no reason to purchase this over the more popular VR shooters available. I wasn't a fan of Space Pirate Trainer but even that was better than this because at least it lets you switch weapons during a run. This is yet another VR game that feels like it was made for arcades and was simply dumped on Steam to generate more sales. Minimal effort games like this make me just want to sell my VR setup already because my VR backlog has been mostly miserable filler like this. Not recommended, don't bother, do not play.
This is my favorite shooter for VR. It's well polished and more fun than others like space pirate trainer. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten more reviews.
Richard Wilde is probably the most underrated wave shooter out there for VR. Plenty of great-feeling guns, fun & colorful environments & enemies with style & charm, and most importantly, just great gameplay.
Fabulous. 10 / 10
This game feels like an old arcade game and I'm loving it. It's your base of a wave shooter with the added elements of a wide variety of enemies, timed shots, evasion, and tons more. Re-playable, perfect for parties as the concept is pretty simple and super easy to pick up intuitively.
Give it a try, it's a ton og fun.
This series is one of the best and most underrated wave shooters on steam. (I know I've played a ton of them). It's pretty damn hard, even on normal. Lots of fun to be had. I always like to waste a few minutes here or there just playing around in the main menu.
It's a VR wave shooter...so you know, don't expect big things.
Lots of weapon variety, tons of tough enemies, and a really unique aesthetic.
Seriously underrated. Also incredibly difficult.
The people who come anywhere close to 100% completing this game have some insane skill.
I could only play this using Steam VR which I didn't want to use for my Oculus. The game was fun but very hard, I enjoyed it. Not recommending it because of Steam VR.
Dick Wilde is a great wave shooter. It offer a nice variety of weapons, amazing graphics and is well polished and bug free.
However, while I definitely recommend this game for expert players fan of the genre.... this game is way too harsh for common people.
The difficulty is so harsh that I spent an entire hour stuck on the first level. This difficulty also mean you might only be able to get some fun on the first 2 levels and will never unlock the other 7.
Dick Wilde is a great game, but I don't think it will click with many people.
Contrary to popular opinion, I'm a big fan of wave shooters. But they have to get the basics right. In my book, SPT is a perfect example of nailing the core mechanics (despite some aggravating bugs), and not much more. Still. it's enough to make me spend countless hours chasing highscores.
I could write quite a few paragraphs about where D. Wilde (Steam censors the title lol) drops the ball to various degrees, but there's one single issue that just totally eclipses everything else. You have 1 weapon for an entire level (10 waves). The tactical depth aspect of letting the player change weapons depending on the threat at hand, is absolutely essential to me in a plain wave shooter. I can forgive it in games where locomotion and level geometry plays a role, but not here.
Just like with "Blasters of the Universe", the gameplay wears thin way too fast due to this, and achors the verdict in the waters of mediocrity.
It's decent fun for a few hours, so if you're a fan of the genre, it's worth checking out on sale.
65%
It is a waveshooter, but a very good one. All weapons feel different and fun to use and the enemies are diverse. It's very challenging, but not unfair.
shot a banjo.
Fun, polished, clever, and many levels and weapons. There are a lot of VR wave shooters out there, but this is definitely one of the best.
Reminds me of games I used to spend a lot of money in arcades to play. Very solid experience that runs smooth and the variety in weapons, enemies, and areas makes the replay value on this game very high. I just spent over an hour in my first sitting and time flew by. The visuals combined with the sounds and music really add to the polished feel of this game. A must-have for any VR gamer.
Ran into the team at Pax East, tried the game and really enjoyed it. Fast forward I have only played it briefly, but instantly i know it's a game I will come back too time and again. For me it just reminds me of old school arcade shooter which I love, and the combination of different weapons, powerups and other eleemnts makes it stand above others.
The only thing I can see turning people off is really just the title of the game, where it's not just another sci-fi shooter people might pass it by.
In the end if your looking for something different, and pirate trainer and the deep dark games (e.g. arizona, brook) are not your jam I highly reccomend.
Fantastic and actually challenging!
Yes it's a wave shooter but i've never played anything like it ... It's just very very very well made and very very worth it.
Very fun and polished. Big variety of monsters, weapon choices, and maps. Hoping we can see more of this in the future.
Wow, a very fun, pretty, and cute wave shooter. Global leaderboard for each level and weapon really makes this game shine. A no brainer purchase for under 20 bucks.
Best VR game I've tried to date! The recipe is quite simple but it is really well followed through.
The games are really fun and the variety of creeps is super awesome.
... come on charge you stupid controllers so I can kill more!
There are some minor bugs in the game, but seeing since this is release day, I'm confident they will be cleared up soon.
Cletus for president y'all !!!
