Please note that although you can register a Shapelab account after downloading Shapelab, an account is not needed to access the application. To create an account you only need to provide an email address and a password, or you can choose to sign in with your existing Google or Facebook account. When I originally purchased this product, it was called "Shapelabs" and had a perpetual license that included all future updates. They've now changed the name of the product to "Shapelabs 2024", and called the next DLC update "Shapelabs 2025" to justify charging people more money. I already purchased this entire system for $60 and now I'm being baited and switched into purchasing future updates like they said they wouldn't do.
It's not an expansion or upgrade that is some MASSIVE thing. It's literally just the same system they've got going with a few tweaks and fixes it to from what is seen in the 2025 from the 2024 version. And no I won't ask for a refund. Not worth my time. But I will call out bad business practices. And no I won't purchase any future "upgrade DLC's"
This will be left up to show others who are wondering what to expect from the team of "Shapelabs XXXX"

The app has one singular advantage over flat-screen modeling: the ability to build organic shapes. However, this is hardly unique, as any VR sculpting app can achieve the same. There's nothing groundbreaking here to justify its existence, let alone its price tag.
What’s most insulting is the blatant disregard for returning customers. Instead of improving the bare-bones product they initially provided, they’ve opted to sell an entirely separate version. It feels like a shameless cash grab, expecting loyalty from users who’ve already paid for a subpar experience.
bloody good stuff
Been using this software for a while - great sculpting app, speaking as a pro sculptor. But (!) I just saw the new 2025 version drop. That’s cool, but here’s what’s not: they’re advertising a 50% discount, yet all I see is 25% for a bundle. No 50% for me, even though I’ve been a customer for years. Not okay.
I purchased a software product called Shapelab with a perpetual license, and now, just two weeks later, I see that you are selling a DLC called Shapelab 2025 in 2024, while the product I bought is now labeled Shapelab 2024. At no point during the purchase did I see that I was acquiring a perpetual license specifically for the 2024 version of the software. If improvements are made in 2024, they should logically be included in the 2024 version, and any subsequent enhancements can be part of the 2025 version.

Thank you for your response and the provided links. It would be great if you could add some of them to the Steam guides section for a quick start. As you may have noticed, I purchased the Shapelab 2025 DLC and will keep an eye on the updates. If it proves worthwhile, I will change my review to a positive one - that would be fair.
You don't have to have a super computer for it to run smoothly, unlike some other vr sculpting programs. It does have a perpetual license, but you do have to buy major updates if you want them, which is understandable. This is a pretty niche program, they are probably not selling millions of copies. They have to fund development somehow.
This is hands-down the most intuitive VR sculpting tool I’ve ever tried. Recommended!
I’m new to 3D modeling, and Shapelab is really easy to use. The controls feel natural, and I love being able to step inside my model to see all the details. I just started using it, but it’s already helping me learn.
One of the best vr sculpting tool out there with a good support from the dev team.
Still a lot to add to compete with non vr sculpting tools but it's promessing.
Superb 3d sculpting software. Very intuitive and quick learning curve.
Watch the few beginner videos they have on YouTube. They help so much. Shapelab is easy to use although it does take a bit of time to familiarize yourself with the different tools available. Every tool is customizable to a degree and offers lots of different options for creation. With just a little bit of figuring out, I was able to take my real life sculpting skills and apply them easily inside the program. Highly recommended!
Great program and I honestly have many things able to happen now because of it. I look forward to 2025 projects.
The app was great. It really was.
But seeing how the developer denies that this was, indeed, a perpetual license and claiming it is the 2024 license when in fact it was not. You can see in steam everything is recorded. This used to be a perpetual license to ShapeLab. We bought a perpetual license to Shapelab. Then on May 30 of 2024 they decided to change the name from "Shapelab" to "Shapelab 2024" and tell us that we are no longer entitled to updates.
Now they are saying you keep the license forever, but the updates are limited to the specific year. If this was the idea all along it would have been the name all along. but it was not. It was changed. Recently. I did not buy "Shapelab 2024" I bought a perpetual license to "Shapelab".
Their website's FAQ under "Why are there both subscription and one-time purchase options?" reads "... No matter which option you choose, you will get the same version of Shapelab." and that is no longer true. If you chose to buy this one or sbuscrbie you will not receive the same version. because this one will stop being updated.

Response to the Developer response.
I understand that it is not feasible to keep up with updates forever, but there were other ways to go around it.
Adobe did change into a subscription model but the subscription price was way lower than the perpetual license.
When you say "you" discussed we can see that you mean "you" as in the company. Disregarding what the users said. You can clearly see there were people already telling you that you should consider honoring legacy keys for example, instead of just forcing your users to go whatever path you chose after the fact.
Again, the bad review is not because of the software. It is purely because it seems that you chose and ignored the users.
What I would like? Easy. I would say you should honor your legacy keys and provide them with updates as there was never any mention of versioning, or yearly things on steam. I clearly remember choosing the steam version because it was the one that was not a subscription.
What you could consider? Ok, if you are willing to listen now there are a few things. For example:
* Since you will end up with multiple versions now that you decided to name it yearly you could offer the previous to current version of the software at a huge discount (think 50% discount).
* You could also offer a discount to continue the subscription
* You should consider that the subscriptions must not end in a calendar year. It makes no sense to buy the perpetual for 34.99 (website price) right now if it is only going to include updates for 23 more days.
* I am not sure if it is possible but, you could have left the name as is and made each year a DLC that updated the app
I really do understand that you need to make money, a company is a business, and it must make money. But this transition feels really bad for the previous users. And that is why I can't recommend it.
Software is promising, although the licensing still needs some ironing out in my honest opinion.
I bought it on a whim, thinking it would get better with time.
Meanwhile the software is still lacking major functionality and they change to yearly release model making my license obsolete.
I've used it for an hour, They won't give me refund and I can't hope for 2025 update to make this software suck a bit less.
This is a hard Pass. Devs are getting an L from me.
Very happy I found this program.
Its pretty fun sculpting in vr i think its a good software but if you are buying this just to sculpt and have no intrest in the vr aspect then just go with blender as i do think blender sculpting is much more powerful, if you do have vr i think this software is good for perspective when sculpting because sometimes when i sculpt on desktop id make hands big or make the head too small but in vr its alot easier to see if proporsions are right
if digital sculpting was a potato field and software was a tool to cultivate that field - ShapeLabs would be the unrefundable broken shovel, that you also need to pay 35$ extra dollars to fix. I would call this the worst purchase I've ever made on steam.
LOOK UP INTO THIS SOFTWARE FUNCTIONALITY BEFORE YOU BUY IT
its garbage
Currently running this on Linux through Proton. Not sure what changed, but it suddenly is working when before it couldn't get past initializing the workspace. Does cause some problems when exiting the software, namely wineserver and winedevices having to be manually killed, though due to the fact I'm running it on an unsupported OS I'm not going to hold it against it for this review. Really happy that it works at all on Linux now, as I hate having to dual boot.
Performance is great, controls are intuitive enough that I was able to figure out everything in just a few minutes. I haven't spent much time in this program yet as it only just started working for me but from what I've tested it looks like I can recreate my Blender workflow here. It uses an equivalent to Dyntopo in Blender by default, though there are options to use quad or voxel remesh as well.
Don't bother, I like it, but changing the pricing model from perpetual to subscription albeit annual SUCKS and is plain dishonest after I brought it.
Wonderful tool, I use it for organic modeling of characters. Would not trust the symmetry to this software alone. I post-process with TopoGun 3D revectorization to make things look neat.

cathartic session in VR. no crashes so far when saving and loading projects. JUST BE PATIENT at times when it's remeshing to some crazy numbers you may have inputted by accident, curiosity, or pure masochism. you can cancel it too. Just be patient haha.
ShapeLab is nice, runs smooth and there is actually a great feel to sculpting. Menus and use are very easy to understand. I like painting mode, and use of alpha patterns. Hope future updates come up with more innovative functions, maybe some more inorganic operations and FX. So far I love it, more than worth its price!!!

A must try for any visual artist with access to PCVR.
I've always liked this app, not so much what I can do, but for what I have seen people who know what they're doing do. As much as I love vr I found it hard to learn the app with a HMD strapped to my face. The pen tablet functionality is a game changer though, now I can learn comfortably and jump into VR less confused. I prefer it to Blender for sculpting, it's powerful enough to not feel limited and it seems stable, but it doesn't overwhelm you with settings like Blender does. I would like volumetric drawing of shapes like Medium or Kodon, then it would be 10/10 for me. Solid 8.7/10....from someone who is still pretty new 3D modeling, though.
Fantastic software. It feels so natural. So easy to use. It also runs incredibly well on my 11 year old PC.
I was able to load STL miniature sculpts in easily and it was very easy to work on them. It was such a pleasant surprise as I cant upgrade my PC right now for financial reasons.
A bit of background and other software I tried:
I have tried Adobe medium (FREE - but didn't run half as smoothly) but after playing with it for a bit I tried ShapeLab and it was a game changer.
I tried Gravity sketch too. (FREE and amazing fun and runs without a PC which is so nice, but I like organic sculpting and It felt better suited to more industrial design)
The other program I really like is NOMAD on Ipad. It gives me alot of power and feels natural, like ShapeLab. so I like easy to use programs that give me enough power to sculpt fantasy minis. I did some work in Blender a couple years ago, but it all got too confusing. Nomad was the perfect replacement. But sculpting in VR is something else!
Actual 3D sculpting in VR! Having control of what you're doing with full 3D controllers while in VR is amazing! It allows workflows that were not possible before. I could never twist a sculpt before. Or mash my head inside of geometry to check for weird back facing surfaces.
I hope they keep on developing this software and get just a bit more features in there and it'd be a one stop 3D modeling program. As it is I'll be doing all of my sculpting in VR from now on.
