I played Labyrinth of Galleria and loved every second of it, so I was super excited to try the previous game in the series, too. However, this game has an issue that happened to me very often where the screen turns black and then the game crashes. Since you have to manually save your progress between sessions in the dungeon (and it kept crashing while I was in the dungeon) , it became impossible to continue playing. I'm honestly really sad about that, since I really really enjoyed Labyrinth of Galleria, and this game seemed to be just like it! From what I could find online, there is also no fix to this bug. I hope I can play it someday but it seems like it's impossible for now.
Playing on the Steamdeck to test if this is actually playable or not. I have around 120 hours on the Switch version of this game, and 90 hours on its sequel on the Switch. It automatically sets the resolution correctly. The text is the same size as on the Switch, which I had no issues with.
I love DRPGs. They are a rare breed of games that seem to be relegated to softcore porn ala Mary Skelter, Tokyo Clanpool, MeiQ, and many, many others, or they are old, outdated designs, stuck on DOS-box, ala Eye of the Beholder, Wizardry series (until recently), or just very dated designs like Phantasy Star, etc. So when a DRPG comes along that has a story that is a little bit less tame, but with really strong dungeon crawling (in the actual sense, not Steam's weird as fuck sense), I need to get the word out there.
So what is a DRPG?
A DRPG is a grid-based game that is in the first person, usually involving parties, sometimes called a blobber. Some are in realtime (Grimrock) while most are turn based. The game either maps for you (modern games) or relies on you making a mental map, or its a whole system in the game (Etrian Odyssey). This is a modern turn-based DRPG, both in combat and in the maps.
The game has a lot of depth to it with its soul system, its equipment system, its coven system, the gore critical system for the puppets you control. And as for the dungeon aspects, it has some unique bits and bobs, including breaking walls because you can. Its really hard to emphasise how much more content there is in Labyrinth of Refrain, and its sequel, Labyrinth of Galleria. I believe this is in part because these games are Nippon Ichi Software games, which are known to be a bit...extra.
Labyrinth of Refrain is the better of the two games. While Labyrinth of Galleria has quality of life features including not losing items on party wipe (yes, this can fuck you over in Refrain! Save often!), its story is a lot weaker, as is the dungeon crawling.
I would recommend this game if you enjoyed DRPG games such as:
Labyrinth of Galleria
Legend of Grimrock I & II
Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey/Redux
Etrian Odyssey series
Eye of the Beholder series
Mary Skelter 2 (haven't played the others)
Saviour of Sapphire Wings
Kowloon High School Chronicles
I would not recommend it if you're sensitive to anime tropes. There are things I really dislike in Labyrinth of Refrain that include the constant abuse of Luca and Fitz (children) by their parental figure that's done in a way that I can only describe as "anime", or Marietta's "comically anime" advances on the main character, Dronya with her massive "potatoes" (normal people would call these melons, real badonkadonks, and many other nonsensical terms for breasts, but she calls them potatoes and that's just weird).
Its hard to recommend as a first DRPG not because its the best out there but because of the aforementioned anime tropes, but if you know you like this kind of game, I think its worth it. Its got some really interesting bosses, its environments are unique and tell individual stories alongside the main one, and I just really liked this game.
This game is really good. The combat is probably the weakest part because of the focus on grinding and gear hunting (for postgame), but I think the story more than makes up for it. It is absolutely a mature story that deals with adult themes (what makes people bad, confronting abusers, etc) but NIS actually handled it well for once?
Honestly, this game is so good coming from NIS that I think it's a fluke. Playing the sequel confirmed that. Strongly recommend Refrain if you don't mind darker themes. Stay away from Galleria unless you played Refrain for the combat.
This feels like a side game that was supposed to let you find out the story of a mysterious side character. It's not, but that's the only positive thing I can suggest for the story since the normal ending makes you wonder if that's it and the true ending makes you wonder why you wasted your time. The game is real simple, you can (are supposed to) mash attack through most fights. The harder ones aren't that much more complicated, just use whatever magic is good against the opponent and have your tank take the hits.
The game has real straightforward progression which means grinding is not necessary until you reach the final boss (not true ending) where you will now need to grind, except by doing so you'll also have grinded enough that you won't have any trouble with the rest of the game if you decide to go for the true ending.
It's a nice game for listening to podcasts because you can mindlessly go through it and the music is still stuck in my head, but I have no clue why people are talking about the story when it's very shallow (dark does not mean depth) and leaves you with zero sense of achievement. If I stop a single person buying this then that's the real achievement.
long playtime, team-building is a core mechanic of the game and can be fun trying things out
one of the best stories 10/10
Got it on a sale and if you are a fan of dungeon crawling games you should try it out, I enjoyed my time with it. Dungeons are varied and all of them are unique, although the post game dungeons are a remix of them which is fine. The characters in the story won't please everyone but its interesting enough to see through the end.
The game introduces many different mechanics which seems a bit complicated at first but its not a very hard game, I will recommend the default difficulty setting. Puppet characters are cute and so are the main cast of characters, but the story is dark and edgy at times. Its like 9 dollars in a sale so try it out if you have time in your hands
Great DRPG ever
This game is super underrated.
The gameplay is very easy and is the most worst part of the game.
I loved the art and the wonderful story about those two girls.
It's really good.
Madam Dronya is very hot
Yes
A solid dungeon crawler and one of the best stories I've read. It was an extremely dark and emotional journey but I'm glad I saw it through to the end. 9/10
Very good and unique take on a blobber/Wizardry style first person dungeon crawler. The way the amount of "slots" for characters in your party can vary more and more as the game goes on nicely makes your party feel a lot more organic compared to other similar games.
Your characters being magical puppets is an interesting way to present them.
Magical elements being called Flame, Mud and Fog is quite refreshing.
The dungeons in the game are quite well designed in my opinion.
This one does a great job of tricking you into thinking that it's going to be deep and complex. There are eight different classes, and up front they let you know that your characters can change classes using "Soul Transfer". In order to engage in battle, your characters must be assigned to battle groups known as "Covens", each of which differ in terms of how many fighters they allow, what bonuses they grant to fighters, and what skills are useable by each Coven.
The Covens are also the only thing that gives active skills, with classes giving only passives. What this actually translates to in-game is that the Covens are more like your actual characters, and the individuals you assign to them are more like stat plug-ins. Sure, the eight classes have unique passives, but honestly you hardly need to think about them... I only considered my characters in terms of whether they were tanks, physical attackers, or magic users. They really have zero identity outside that thanks to the coven system. And Soul Transfer for class changing? You get to keep some of the passives from the previous class, and your newly transferred character will have more stats per level. It's basically the sort of meta you would see in an idle game.
Even on Nightmare mode it's a fairly easy and repetitive game. Set your tanks to guard, decide whether or not to use your active attack skills... that's pretty much it. Occasionally enemies will land "Gore Hits" that permanently reduce the stats of a character until you retreat from the dungeon to fix it, which is more of an annoyance than anything else.
There is lots of story, but it has almost nothing to do with the dungeons you go through. Your master is an arrogant semi-evil witch who wants to make her fortune, and she'll be interacting with the townsfolk and other characters during story intermissions. You, on the other hand, are sent into other dimensions to find treasure for her. Basically every time you reach the next arbitrary point in the dungeon, you get another story scene for the witch that is mostly irrelevant to your dungeon crawling. It's like... why should we care about that story?
Overall, this one is not a very interesting dungeon crawler. Possibly good for folks who just want to grind. Which is funny because the game doesn't require grinding to proceed. It's more that the game itself is a grind.
I was not expecting to get so invested into the characters and setting, thinking it would have just some light plot... I was completely wrong. Beautiful, sweet, sad, and surprisingly dark story, coupled with that wonderful NIS aesthetic.
A bit too grindy towards the end, but not enough to disuade me. I would call it deceptively easy - it expects you to use and exploit every single tool it gives you to succeed, and just like the Disgaea games, you can make some downright broken characters if you know what you're doing.

Enjoyable team-building dungeon exploring turn-based RPG. It can be kind of slow-paced, so people who like more fast-paced games probably won't be into it much. It has a good story from what I've played of it so far.
The only main complaints I can think of right now are:
1. Not being able to go back to replay previous dialogue, both while a story scene is playing and even from a menu.
2. There aren't any tip/help sections that explains mechanics that can easily be revisited to review (that I'm aware of anyway).
I think it's mainly newer games that have tend to have these features more, so maybe it's not a fair comparison, but it would be nice if these were in the game.
I love everything else about the game, except for that you can wander into the wrong area and get in a fight with enemies that are a ten times stronger than you.
No warning, no difference in their enemy icon. You can't escape because escape chance is based on stats, and theirs are ten times higher. They have thousands of hp, and do thousands of hp in damage. You do tens of damage, and have hundreds of hp.
It's just... stupid.
So, you eat the death and deal with lasting consequences that can set you behind for a whole playthrough, and just remember where the over-leveled enemies are, or reload a save and write off a run as a complete waste of time. Trial and error by definition. There are just no-no rooms you have to memorize or die inescapably.
How this could be in any way defensible game design is beyond me.
Oh yeah, and luck is a mostly unexplained mechanic, where choosing the wrong name, stance, and/or potentially many other stupid factors can cripple you for an entire playthrough.
You can even debuff your characters by soul transferring without reading up on how luck works first.
Read a guide before rolling characters, if you really want to beat this game.
And in fact, following a guide is probably the only way you could avoid the random over-leveled one-shot mobs.
I usually prefer to beat games by figuring out everything on my own, but this game is virtually un-enjoyable without metagaming.
If you don't like RNGsus, don't buy this game, everything encounter revolves mostly around it, including how much money you spend in battles
💋
Character management and customization is probably the best out of all games from NIS i have played so far (Disgaea 1-5, Makai Kingdom, Phantom brave)
The combat and exploration seemed novel and interesting at first but the more i explored later dungeons the more tedious it was getting. Stumbling around clueless where to go and being interrupted every 10 seconds by enemies that force you to hold down skip battle button until it's over isn't that pleasant of an experience nor very engaging. At some point it felt like i was just purely wasting my time instead of playing a videogame so after getting through Melm i've decided that that's enough.
Characters in this game are awful, it's like they went with their usual comedically evil characters from Disgaea but forgot to add comedy to them. What we end up getting is a bunch of characters that only makes you want to strangle them. Luca is one of the better characters but it appears that she is there just to be abused by the Witch and that just made me feel bad for her. Owlboy and a kid from the workshop with his dad also seemed rather decent.
This game is kind of a double-edge sword.
In one hand, it has innovative mechanics for this type of game, and a fun story overall. But the reason that it deserves a negative review in my opinion, is that you can't play two hours on it on your PC, without getting a black screen or some monsters glitching. Those kinds of games have the simplest design, which is relaying a lot on 2D animation, and dungeon crawlers usually gives a smoother experience because of it. But for some unknown reasons, this game is so jarringly prone to crashing, that it's almost feels like a race against the clock everytime you step into the action side of it. And it's not like I have a bad computer, this game is several years old already, how is it impossible to play a whole afternoon without a bug!
+ Great story elevated by great voice acting that is surprisingly grim with heavy themes.
+ Gameplay features dungeon-crawler staples such as pitfalls, dark rooms, and teleporter tiles, but with a NIS twist.
+ While you have 5 party slots, you can find a multitude of team compositions called "Covens" to fill in each slot, allowing up to 3 active party members per slot while having additional units in reserve to swap at will.
+ There is also the NIS staple of "Reincarnation" which is called "Soul Transfer" in this game, which allows you to reset a unit's level for greater stat boosts and skills.
- While most mechanics are explained, mechanics such as Act Speed, Magic, Luck, Karma, etc., are explained too little too late, or not at all. I highly recommend a guide if you're lost on what something does.
- There are some mistranslations such as "charm will deduct these stats" but the opposite is true, it will increase stats.
- Finding the requirements for accessing the post-game, specifically in the 2nd and 3rd dungeon are obscure. Especially when another 1/4 of the game is locked behind it.
- Specific Covens are needed to have a chance for specific bosses at endgame.
I highly recommend this game if you are familiar with NIS's past games, or are a hardcore dungeon-crawler due to similar mechanics. If you are new to both, don't be afraid to look for a guide for a smoother experience.
This game is great, it lets you have different play styles and get into the groove of exploring a dungeon, and it knows what style of game it is, so it makes farming easy and actually enjoyable. Its better to play it over watching game play, so i highly recommend it
fun
Something something something darkside
This was too wacky for me.
Extremely bad and boring combat, yet there is a lot of BAD encounters that will wipe your team at the most inopportune moment, which means loose you progress for a 1-2 hours + pay a LOT for repairs.
Would not recommend to anyone!
...
Im probably a masochist for continuing to play this garbage.
The game have a lot of cool systems, but basic gameplay loop is one of the worst I have seen.
Latest example: 6 dungeon, 2 hours of monotone extermination of super easy enemies, then come some random EMPOWERED cube that have 120k HP, 30k heal on demand (when I can deal like 5-10k a round) and one shot my tanks with 10k dmg hits. Goodbye 2 hours of exp (around 300k) and mana.
So game that is already a giant waste of time like to randomly waste your time and efforts even more!!!
i was looking for a game that was just like this and i liked the art style and tried it...... im so fucking glad that i bought this game was way better then i expected about to start the second game.
Bloodier and hornier Etrian Odyssey. Relative to those:
+ Strong emphasis on story from the get-go.
+ Team construction is an interesting, well-developed system in its own right.
- Non-boss fights offer uninteresting turn-to-turn gameplay.
- Several mechanics are opaque or obscure.
- Some translation issues.
I like this game. I like both the story and the turn based combat style.
