Classic and awesome
A masterpiece. You just need to be patient with the combat during the first part of the game, but it’s truly a gem, a classic.
An classic PC game. Well worth to play. Game has a great story line that help start the franchise today. I wish they would make a remake. If you love medieval, dark story lines with a twist and vampires. I highly recommend a play through. Only concern i have is when its hard to see the screen a dark environment, it may be a little. Overall i would give this game an 8.5 out of 10 for originality.
A journey expanding from one the most obscure and primordial depths of the Kindred's story to the sinister authority they hold over the modern nights, Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption is a treasured member of the franchise.
Storytelling:
Main protagonist, Christof Romuald, a name you might be acquainted with from Beckett's Jyhad Diary; is a Crusader Knight of the Dark Ages. All the hallmarks of a chivalrous knight: brave, noble and kind-hearted, this soldier of pure faith guards the people of Prague against the uncanny forces of the night, all the while consumed by his love for none other than priestess Anezka. Once he comes within the crosshairs of Ecaterina the Wise, the leader of the Brujahs in Prague, and is Embraced, he finds himself in the midst of a conflict, secluded from Kine's gaze. Demanding a strong militarism for her clan as well as an intellectual accumulation, Ecaterina, isolated within the bounds of University, strives to create an established coterie for the campaign against Tremere and Tzimisce. This calculated vision and ambition of hers draws Christof in and the story begins.
a) Dark Ages: The time spent in the Dark Ages focuses on Ecaterina's political concerns and Christof's campaign to find Anezka, however, as the story unfolds, various narratives about the existence of the Kindred, its sectors and the inherent nature of the clans and their quarrels amongst themselves are revealed. From the Lasombra to the Followers of Set. Enhanced by a gothic atmosphere and some deliciously old-school dungeon crawling, Old Prague immerses the player into a world several centuries old. The coterie in the dark ages consists of Wilhem, a friendly and guiding Brujah, Serena, a dignified and resourceful Cappadocian, and Erik, a well-meaning, if somewhat confrontational, Gangrel.
b) Modern Nights: Although the passage between the Dark Ages and the Modern World is quite abrupt and sudden, the principles of the universe are skillfully integrated into both eras, despite their divergence from one another. Therefore, for audiences unfamiliar with the brand, I found Redemption to be a very satisfying and welcoming entry. Despite its wonderful ambience and thrilling soundtrack though, Modern Nights is a bit weaker in terms of content than the first half of the game. It feels like this period is treated as a major turning point in the story, so the maps and missions are confined to fulfilling the main campaign. This quarter, the party consists of Pink, a foul-mouthed Brujah, Lily the Toreador, a quintessential Damsel™ in distress, and Samuel the Nosferatu, whom one would most likely prefer for his personality rather than his beauty.
Yes, we have no children of Malkav. Nor a Ventrue. Thank the Caine!
Battle Mechanics:
Given the relatively old age of the game and Nihilistic's numerous indecisions during development, it's no wonder that the gameplay and combat system are a rather disorienting affair. The AI isn't the brightest around, and unfortunately, less so for your party members than for the enemies. Hence coterie management (and Disciplines, but more on that in a moment) can either make or break the overall experience. Idle Coterie members are willing to lose a whole lot of their vitae in combat for the sake of the most frivolous attacks against the least threatening enemies, so make sure to switch between characters. Each party member possesses particular abilities appropriate to the composition of their respective clans, so it is sensible to allocate a particular offensive function to each of them. Stances are crucial also. Based on the setting you are in, you can decide between aggressive, neutral or defensive stances. The AI will react to its surroundings accordingly, even if not always tactfully.
Disciplines:
Redemption is incredibly rich in terms of Discipline trees. Although there are 18 of them, I will focus on the ones I find the most efficient in combat. Feel free to try out the rest though, it is a whole lot of fun. Almost all of the Discipline groups are clan based, however, there are tomes scattered throughout the game that will grant you some of these respectful skills.
Common: Common, as is called in Vampire the Masquerade, is the only Discipline group that is attainable and performable by the Kindred of all clans and sects. The first skill within this discipline tree being Feeding, which, as you might have guessed, draws blood from the target's Blood Pool and satisfies the Kindred's thirst. The other four skills cost 5 units from the Blood Pool and they operate as stat enhancers. Blood Healing, Blood Strength, Blood Dexterity, i.e. These enhancers will be heavily needed.
Auspex: Yes, yes and yes. Auspex is an incredibly advantageous Discipline in Redemption. It has four abilities that you might try out, although merely just the Heightened Senses is the most utilitarian one against foes that use the Obfuscate Discipline tree, like the Nosferatu. They can get ridiculously annoying as they continously teleport from one spot to the other, but their defeat is guaranteed for measly 5 units from your Blood Pool!
Blood Rituals: Blood Rituals is only accessible through the Haus Tome you get from Haus de Hexe, but it's worth every single agonizing minute spent in that hell hole. It has five abilities and their stat requirements range from 25 to 60 INT. Although they cost a good chunk of the character's Blood Pool, Prison of Ice and Call Lightning do wonders against hyperactive bosses. Especially the final boss, Vukodlak, is nearly impossible to beat without the Prison of Ice ability. (p.s., it's challenging even with Prison of Ice.)
Lure of Flames: Like the Discipline Tree above, Lure of Flames also is accessible only through tomes. There are two of them, the first one is found in the Teutonic Knight Base during the first half of the game. And the second one can be found within the Society of Leopold. Weaker abilities are okay, I suppose, but they don't do a whole lot of damage that is worth mentioning. Fire Storm though, will do the job for you. It requires 70 INT and costs 25 units from your Blood Pool, so make sure to fire that bad boy up at the perfect time.
Presence: Majesty! Majesty is the most sumptuos ability within this Discipline group and to be honest, it doesn't have the most insane AOE. However, it's a great backup to have for whenever you're cornered by enemy hordes. I used it a whole bunch and saved me from a grotesque Final Death a few times.
Protean: For this Discipline tree, I will mostly focus on Feral Claws as it is a quite early-game ability that comes with Wilhem joining the coterie and it costs only 5 units from the Blood Pool. Already at the beginning it has 15 Aggravated damage and it can only go up! Erik also has this ability as he is a Gangrel, those two will help you a bunch with bosses that regular weapons won't do even the slightest damage. Wink wink, looking your way, Vaclav.
Happy gaming!
Giving this game another try as last time I played the game had a broken quest which was game breaking to the point I quit.
Claims have been made the bugs and glitches have been fixed?
I'll play again to see if that is true?
Real product of the times, but I'm a hoe for most....most...VTM/VTR/V5 etc shit. I refuse to play any of those winowy Coteries of NY things, but have played all of the published games, tabletops, interactive novels that weren't shit (Kyle Marquis is a legend for Night Road and an admittadly queer, but very good WTA). Point being is, you should be playing HIM or some other vampire rock and side eyeing eyeliner while playing this...combat is a slog use cheats I promise you
The graphics and gameplay haven't aged particularly well, but warts and all this is one of my favourite games of all time. The story is something all Vampire fans, or fans of vampire media in general, should play at least once. This game also happened to be my introduction to the World of Darkness, which has given me countless hours of enjoyment ever since in video games and at tables.
One of my two favorite games from my youth, along with Fallout 2!
An excellent game on a vampire theme even for today, with an incredible atmosphere and vampire mechanics, from vampire skills to the ability to maintain humanity, the need to feed at least on rats and hide from direct sunlight!
Special thanks to the developers for the incredible cinematic video at the start of the game and the pure love story between the noble knight and the nun Anezka!
Atmosphere and story is very good, which is why you should play this game.
However the difficulty is artificially high and unbalanced, play with cheats once you have had enough.
Final boss is just frustrating for no reason keeping you stun-locked throughout the fight.
Despite that, I still recommend it, the ending is very moving.
The gameplay is painfully outdated.
Masterpiece.
A classic, I finished it unmodded, I had the happy ending, certain boss fights were a nightmare cos they one shot you or my coterie AI was doing Idk what. But overall compelling story a world of darkness V20 as it can be told on the TTRPG. Really loved it. The time jump was the most surprising one for me and the contrast of what Crisstoff was before and after was delightful to watch and play !
Every rpg enjoyer should experience this game in his lifetime.
I've loved this game since its release, I wish someone would make a continuation of Cristoff's story following the clan novels.
It's an ok game that's showing it's age. The controls are very dated, some of the design choices in the game don't make sense (e.g. the entire Dominate discipline is completely useless since for most of those abilities you give up control of your PC to be able to attack with an NPC, leaving your PC undefended). Some of the earlier fights are likewise just stupid, frustrating, unfair and suck. And fighting doesn't feel good. In some instances you are just staring at your PC, or even your entire coterie, while they miss 10 swings in a row, 'cause of RNG. Just hit the guy already! Meanwhile the enemy is MAULING your PCs face of. However, all of the blood magic abilities are a lot of fun to use and pretty powerful too.
Redemption is VERY combat heavy. Don't go in expecting to interact with thoughtful characters. It's not that kind of game. It's basically a dungeon crawler.
But for all it's flaws, it was fun playing it, even if a little repetitive at times. If you are a die-hard VT:M fan and don't mind the flaws and that this focuses more on the combat, then go for it. You'll get to visit cool places in-game and get some extra VT:M lore. Otherwise, you can safely skip this one.
Ah one more thing....
TO THE ABYSS WITH THEE!
very janky, hard to get working on modern systems, but still a classic. It's not as good as bloodlines, but has it's own appeal in how everything works. I would recommend it for any fans of vampires or old school rpgs.
Best VTM Game
A prequel to Bloodlines, Redemption is a dungeon-crawler with more emphasis on combat than its famous sequel.
Flows
- Great atmosphere, at least up to the point I played. Characters are all talking in old English, which is just a delight.
- A simple but enjoyable tale of the protagonist, cursed to be a vampire, trying to regain his humanity so he can be with a nun he fell in love with, while gothic intrigue is going all around and everyone is preparing for the apocalypse.
- First-Person view available.
Flaws
- The game is an RPG that does not explain what its stats do, AT ALL. Spoilers: Wit is probably the most important stat in the game, but f@ck me if I could guess that without looking it up online. You also won't be getting any explanations as for what your scrolls do either.
- And on that note: Get weapons with high accuracy bonus, or you will be suffering for no reason. Also raise dexterity so your accuracy increases from that as well.
- No button remapping option.
- Feeding as a vampire is basically a stunlock you can do on any single humanoid target, slowly (painfully so) draining their health away while filling your mana (blood). This is way too effective not to be abused, so basically you'll be kiting your enemies to isolation, then just stunlocking them and reading doujins or something while your characters are taking their sweet time feeding.
- You would think that it is therefore a great idea to have each of your party members stunlock and drain an enemy like that, but the AI controls all party members not directly under your control, and it immediately chooses to cease the feeding. In general the AI is borderline retarded, and it is a real shame that you cannot afford to leave your companions at the start of the dungeon so they will not get in your way...
- Especially because of the (completely ret@rded) vampire rage meter. Basically when taking damage or being targeted by some specific spells, your vampires get a certain meter filled. When it reaches 100%, you lose control of those party members, which start attacking incredibly slow (basically becoming useless) OR they turn to feed on the nearest humanoid possible... Usually you. So not only do your party members not help you, they actively stunlock your character until the rage effect ends. This is cancer of the highest capacity when enemy mages summon aoe mists that deal damage over time, or while enemy adds just swarm your character (also bodyblocking the path towards enemy casters).
- Certain enemies are just cancer. Golems/elementals have low accuracy but their damage output is plain stupid. My tank character basically could die in 2-3 hits by an elemental randomly summoned from summoning circles (aka a random mob).
- The AI uses its skills randomly. It DOESN'T know to heal itself when its health drops.
- No Quick-Save button. You have to open the menu every single time.
- The mapping is more or less terrible. Navigating yourself is exceedingly difficult in many areas, including the very starting area of the game.
- The camera is your greatest foe.
- The graphics just haven't aged all that great.
[*]Dialogue options make no difference beyond the immediate next few lines. The story is linnear.
Thumbs down. I really want to enjoy Vampire the Masquerade Redemption, truly. The game just won't let me.
I eternally love Vampire: The Masquerade since it first came out with Redemption.
I still own the physical copy of it but wanted to also purchase the digital version to support the companies that put this masterpiece into motion.
Beckett has always been my favorite character in the series and I'm especially fond of Bloodlines (which he stemmed from I believe) but the characters in Redemption also have so much depth to them as well and I have a special nostalgia for it.
I swear if anything bad happens to Beckett in Bloodlines 2 I will not play it. Just a side note.
I'm kind of stupid so the early game is hard as an be... But it's pretty fun, and the story is great, and once I get out of these mines I'm really gonna be cooking with gas.
