First of all: It doesn't even work right out of the box. You download it and it doesn't start - instead, you need to do some cmd voodoo to trick Steam into finding the actual game data. I don't know whose fault it is, Square or Steam, but that's irrelevant to the player. Luckily though, it's not hard to do and there's a bunch of posts in the Discussion and Guide sections describing the process.
Now, about the game itself.
I am generally not too invested in a game's story, so I won't put much weight on it. Seemed fairly straight forward with some twists near the end that can be unexpected depending on how thoroughly you explore and pay attention. I failed the attention part and was quite surprised. Something that annoyed me from very early on though are some characters: Lann is so braindead it hurts, and Tama's speech impediment is just as insufferable.
The game is absolutely stuffed to the brim with humor and goofiness. Your mileage may vary, but I enjoyed most of it as it made the game lighthearted fun for the most part. Many interactions between Lann and anyone else really got pretty old fast though. I get it, Lann is an idiot. The joke lost its merit many hours ago.
(mini disclaimer: I've only ever played FF1-9) All the cameos of known characters seemed pretty spot on and I'm really happy that my favourite characters of my favourite games made an entrance and felt faithful to their original characters; Bartz & Boko, Faris, Squall, and Quistis. It made me happy to see them all.
I guess if you enjoy fanservice like this, you're likely to have a good time, even if many of the cameos are fairly minimal.
The meat of it all: GAMEPLAY!
You collect monsters (called mirages) that all have what you'd expect: Certain active skills, passives, stats & growth rates, as well as strengths and weaknesses against elements and status ailments. Where it gets interesting, and as far as I know, quite unique, is that each mirage is in a Size category (Small, Medium, Large) through which you're going to assemble stacks. All the skills, stats, strengths and weaknesses will add up, generally increasing your battle prowess. It's an interesting system with a lot of room to experiment with your monsters to optimize for different battles or areas by juggling offenses and defenses.
|| Sidenote: Every mirage has different prerequisites for you to be able to catch them. Some need you to hit them with a certain element or status ailment, others want you to heal them, etc. - a few can be made "catch-ready" only once within an encounter. So always keep your Libra spell ready for new areas to learn how to catch 'em all! ||
You can unstack anytime, or get toppled by enemies (in that case you'll suffer a brief but in worst case fatal stun period). I haven't found much use to unstack other than to reset the topple meter or abuse Reflect against single targets with AoE spells targeted at my own party. That is largely because unstacked participants' stats are useless (increasingly so as you get to higher levels where unstacked characters can often be oneshot by the enemy, let them throw some AoE and you're toast), especially the AP (aka MP/mana/magick) which are a fix 4 per mirage/character, adding up to a maximum of 12 for a full stack. Many many skills require more than 4 AP to cast, thus vastly crippling your battle prowess if you try to go that way. However, if timed well with the ATB bar, it can be useful for using a bunch of items in a short time.
Then there's a few Mirages that have an XL tag. Those cannot be integrated into stacks, but instead can be summoned as long as they're in your team. For a huge AP cost they can be summoned, replacing both your stacks, and fight as a single entity with two actions per turn. While they are quite an awesome spectacle, I have never found any of them to be necessary for anything. Still a lot of fun.
Lann and Reynn are always part of a stack, either as the Large (Jiant form) or Medium (Lilikin) spot. Both of them can be customized via Mirajewels that'll give them Spells, stats, resistances etc. Somewhere near or at endgame however, you will be able to replace them with other monsters, which can increase battle efficiency even further, at the cost of being unable to imprism (catch) monsters, summon XL mirages or champion.
I could yap on and on about it all, but nobody's gonna read it anyway. All in all, I think the gameplay is incredibly satisfying once you get the hang of it. Even dozens upon dozens of hours after beating the story, I still find myself leveling up unused mirages, playing around with different combinations, attempting different approaches to certain Intervention Quest battles or Coliseum encounters.
One personal complaint at the end: Near the end, there's a bunch of minigames available. While I'm not a fan of any of them, I HATE HATE HATE Einhänder Invasion. That mobile game-tier trash fest is the one thing in this game that has made me rage so hard I threw stuff around my living room. You aim, you hit the strength meter roughly where you want it AND THEN WAIT 6-11 MONTHS FOR THE CHARACTER TO GODDAMN DO SOMETHING! Screw that, buddy. I hate it!
All in all though, I really like the game. Feels like a lighthearted love letter to Final Fantasy in general, but with a curious and fun twist to the gameplay formula.
Baby Tonberry, Baby Behemoth, BABY BAHAMUTH! Buddy, I never thought I needed those in my life.
A General tip: Once you've maxed out a mirage's boards and are able to select a bonus skill, always pick Magic+++ or Strength+++ if available. They always feel vastly more valuable than anything else offered there.
You need to start this game from the steam library.
Just click on the Play button. It works like a charm.
DO NOT try to click the desktop icon!
every time i reinstall this for my kids its the same nightmare i need to look around for hours to find the other .exe its a pain in the ass just dont buy this crap game its not even good! its the worst FF ever why its called FF i cant say cause it Sht!!
For me it's cute and a lot of fun. Making a plan to check out the rest that is part of the world
World of Final Fantasy is a monster collecting game that splits the difference Pokemon and a traditional jRPG. I was impressed by the production values, which were much higher than typical for this genre - although I found the characters to be kind of annoying. The stacking and balance mechanics provide an extra twist on the traditional jRPG battle system which is generally fun. Monster customization can feel a little overly convoluted for limited payoff.
For those who are having trouble booting up the game here is a solution: Look for the folder for the game and right click on it and go under properties and change the compatibility to " Run as Administrator".
To change the resolution of the game and screen size to full screen: When you press "Play" it will give you 2 boot up options. The second option is the one that lets you change the resolution and screen size, If you do not see these two options go to the manage icon for the game then the General tab then change launch option.
Hope this helps the new and old players having trouble launching the game, because I did.
This game is bad on so many levels, got it on sell looking for a pokiemon clone and feel ripped off. the game focuses more on stuff you don't care about such as making god female or nagging at the only male in the game.I don't honestly think there is a story here and im not up for a lecture so im just not gonna play it. also has bad tech issues.
Pros: Beautiful monsters, nice graphics overall, and some genuinely funny jokes. The mechanic of building 'towers' of monsters is fresh and interesting, making it fun to explore and experiment with.
Cons: The UX/UI is so incredibly bad that it completely overshadowed all the positives for me. There are so many issues with it, seriously...
1. The most annoying feature is the 'scan' mechanic. You can scan a monster during a fight to reveal its weaknesses, which costs an entire turn. This is already frustrating (and it doesn’t even show stats like magical and physical defenses to help you decide which attacks to use). But what really baffles me is why I can’t check these stats again for free later, after I’ve spent a turn scanning! Am I supposed to memorize them? And why can’t I check my own stack’s or monsters's stats or weaknesses during a fight without scanning an enemy? For example, I’d like to review whether my magical or physical attack is higher in my current stack.
2. The game doesn’t launch directly from the Steam library. You have to manually run the .exe file from the Steam folder every time, lol.
3. The game doesn’t automatically detect whether you’re using a controller. You have to manually go into the settings and tell the game you’re playing with a controller for it to update the button guides on the screen.
4. Some animations - like monster tabs and switching between them - are painfully slow. Considering how many steps it takes to navigate to certain interface tabs, this becomes downright frustrating.
Overall, it feels like the developers either never played the game themselves, or they enjoy suffering and wanted players to feel the same. What a frustrating waste of potential...
Read Me!!! For those unable to launch the game from steam
Easy fix is to right click game in steam Library>Manage game > go to local folder and create a shortcut from the WOFF.exe and save it where you want (i.e. desktop). You can rename it and change the icon back to Cactuar if you want (I kept the goblin)
Loved this game. Played and 100% it first on PS4, World of Final Fantasy is a really good and well-written game.
I know the Final Fantasy community is really mixed about it (feels like you either love it or hate it), hardcore fans not being okay with the characters coming from every other FF games (not like we got Dissidia before it and nobody said anything *cough*), but imo it's nicely made and the game makes sense. The story is good, brings some fresh air for a FF game, but still making you both laugh and cry. I also like the mirages that you have to collect from the beginning to the end, with many variants and special ones. The superboss fights are also cool, and I really enjoyed the postgame contents.
Solid 200 hours on PS4 and 130 hours on Steam, I highly recommand WoFF for anyone who just want to play a cute but simple and fun Final Fantasy game.
Story: 8/10
Characters: 7.5/10
Gameplay: 7.5/10
OST: 9/10
Content/Playtime: 8.5/10
Final notation: 8.1/10
(Spoiler: the mini-games' gonna make you insane)
As a Final Fantasy fan, with the hours I put into this game, I can say the game has been a fun journey with the collection of mirages, befriending them, and even going through the main storyline. Sometimes I even get sidelined wondering "Where do I get this skill?" for all sorts of situations. Wether it is getting a new mirage, or trying to destroy a boss (Regardless if main story or post game), I'd be hunting for it and leveling or putting said skill on the mirages.
However, I will state there has been an issue shooting the game directly through steam that I'm sure everyone already read b now. If not, if you are interested in playing this game, don't click play on steam as the game will crash when launched. Instead, browse your local files and click on the WOFF.exe file instead. I also do have a minor complaint on how the screen resolution and other settings has to be set up on a separate program on the same folder called WOFF_config (Although when you launch it through stream, you might read some Japanese kanji).
Despite my minor complaint about it, I still think it's a decent game. It's not the best Final Fantasy game, and the multiplayer side of this is kind of slept on as I want to see what others build with their mirages. But regardless of that, I think it is great. You get to meet mirages and befriend them, learn of the various Final Fantasy cast in one world, learn about Grymoire as you explore, and even end up having to adapt to stacking and unstacking to deal with enemies (Although you'll probably be like me and just regain balance 90% of time to avoid getting stunned when knocked off balance or not risk a one shot to strong enemies).
If you're looking for something different than your usual pokemon rpg, I'd say give this game a try. I had fun and I still want to find how to defeat some of the post game bosses. Are you going? And are you going? Grymoire is waiting for you!
I love it
Square Enix takes back everything pokemon stole from them and with serious style!
The first hour or so isnt so great. Rocky introduction to a very complex battle system and slightly less than average quality story for a square Enix game. But once you're into the story and actually playing the game, damn. I really enjoy this. The turn based combat and music and setting are reallly 90s! Great details, great style. It's not a hyper masculine game but more androgynous so keep that in mind but if full voice acting, full orchestra, turn-based 90s art and style are things you like, I really think you'll like this game.
Seen it had Serah Farron and others from FF13-2. Spent hours grinding threw the game, finding Lighting and Snow mar-jewels about 40 hours in, for the remainder of the game stayed in littlekin form to be able to use the champion mar-jewels. Finally after the final boss got Serah Farron's mar-jewel at 90 hours. Proceeded to turn on free AP Cheat for the first time and spam Serah signature Ultima Arrow ability on Reyen and Curaga on Lann for the last 15 hours of postgame and dlc until I seen the secret ending after completing everything getting all achievements and gold staring every mirage.
Things that need changing to make the game perfect. There are 236* unique imprisem-able mirages but you can only hold 200+12. So it is not possible to have a gold star on every mirage you are forced to transform them. There are over 150* unique mar-jewels you can only hold 120. You are forced to discard them to even gold star mirages because without space you can spend SP on mar-jewel dots. Kinda lame, I wish you could keep up to 2 copies of every mar-jewel so both Lann and Reyen can have there own copy. Right now you cant even have 1 of each.
It would also be nice if the gender restriction was removed from the champion mar-jewels. It limits the possible builds. I wish to use both lightning mar-jewel and serah mar-jewel at the same time.
All of these changes could be solved with a mod or 1 quick dirty update, as it is just a matter of increasing a max value in the prismarium-case to 250 or more, and mar-jewel menu to 300*, and removing a equip restriction the champion mar-jewels.
I also wish you could cycle between gold star upgrades instead of it being a final choice. But this is side issue.
Cool Gameplay, the graphics are really cute
BIG NO.REFUNDED BIG YES.
Super awesome game. It's a collect-em-all, but also has some depth and a lot of QoL features I haven't seen before all in one place.
The only bad thing is that you can't launch it directly from steam (it will crash). You have to set the two exe files (WOFF and WOFF_config) to Windows 7 compatibility mode and launch the WOFF.exe directly.
its very nice recommend for those is fan this game
The game suffers one technical problems but does seem to be worth playing, here is a fix for the main problems at hand here:
Game crashing upon launching:
Go to the local files of the game, then right click WoFF.exe, go in the property tab and check the box to allow the app to be run as administrator
No way to full screen:
Just go in the local files once again and run WoFFconfig.exe manually from there since square enix can't be bothered to make sure that the interaction they're instructing you to proceed with in order to adjust the graphics works perfectly
Honestly this is just sad, making sure that the basic functions of your program works is the very least when it comes to that sort of things, and although I have no doubt I'll enjoy the game this is something that should *NEVER* occur, especially not for a AAA production
a fun game to play will play again and again!
The game is a mix of Final Fantasy and Pokemon, which makes you try to collect the enemies. It has some interesting ideas and mechanics but the execution is very poor. And the battles are either very easy or impossible (if you are fighting enemies far above your level). There aren't any middle ground challenging battles.
As a Final Fantasy fan, I very much liked the idea of having characters from different games titles in the same game and interact with each other, but they only appeared in Chibi form which ruins the experience for me.
I had only finished Final Fantasy 7 and the FF tactics games from the gba and Ds up until now (which are among my favorite games of all time), now playing World of Final fantasy i just noticed again the summoning mechanics, flashy beautifully animated sequences and characters from legendary lores, and now i think i will be playing more games of the series, is lacking the job system which is on pair with summonings to me but still amazing, it is an excellent game.
Blending charming visuals with classic RPG mechanics, it offers a delightful experience with its engaging story and nostalgic nods to the Final Fantasy series. The unique stacking system adds a fresh twist to combat, while the colorful world and endearing characters enhance the adventure. Though some elements may feel more geared towards a younger audience, it remains a joyful and imaginative journey for fans of the genre.
