Embark on the limitless cosmic adventure that is "Approaching Infinity," a procedurally generated space exploration roguelike with a nostalgic feel and modern sensibilities.
Think turn-based Star Control 2, Star Trek the roguelike, or Ultima IV in space.
Upgrade your ship, outfit your officers, and navigate through a vibrant galaxy filled with alien factions, mysterious artifacts, and tactical turn-based battles. Every playthrough is a unique story waiting to be written.
Be who you want in each new universe! Use the robust character creator to tweak every part of your appearance. Or hit randomize a few times, load a preset, or completely ignore it. Then choose from 10 space-themed character classes, each with unique game-altering skills.
(Don't worry: Later you'll be able to recruit up to 5 more officers of different disciplines to round out your team.)
Is up to you!
12 major factions have full quest lines you can immerse yourself in: learn their history, secure their future... or work against them!
You start with a quest to "find out what happened to the human colony", but it's optional. You can fight or make peace, mine asteroids, buy and sell commodities, survey planets, extort freighters, smuggle illegal goods, engage in diplomacy, collect powerful artifacts, choose a side in the galactic conflict, craft, become famous (or infamous), harvest rare plants, grok creatures, destroy the universe, become a god, salvage shipwrecks, avenge humanity...
Or don't.
It's a galactic sandbox where you can dedicate yourself to a specific role or mission, or just drift from place to place, doing odd jobs and selling your excess loot.
Follow the stories (quest lines) of 12 major alien races, 8 of which lead to unique victories. There are 2 more ways to win that you can discover on your travels. Or you can ignore those goals and explore forever, leveling up your crew and gear to god-like proportions!
(We recently conducted a survey in the Discord: Half of players go for a faction victory, the other half try to see how far they can go.)
Victory is not assured in this dangerous broken galaxy. Death could be waiting just beyond that nebula, behind a tree, or around the next bend in that underground tunnel. It is most assuredly waiting for you in shipwrecks and star temples.
But if you crave exploration and role play more than hard-core challenge, then fear not! Simply select "adventure mode" and death will be no more than an inconvenience on your journey through the stars.
As both a developer and a player, I've always loved procedural generation's ability to supply fresh, unpredictable challenges. Approaching Infinity leverages proc-gen extensively to ensure that every sector, planet, cave, item, and encounter can surprise you. Explorers rejoice!
Approaching Infinity walks a line between deeply-simulated vs. streamlined systems.
For example, fire is fairly "simulated": You can burn trees with your flamethrower, and the fires will spread. It catches faster on planets with high oxygen content, and goes out immediately with high CO2, or vacuum. And if you're on fire, stepping on water will put it out, although we don't track the temperature and wetness of every tile...
But when it comes to time and distance, these concepts are mostly abstract, streamlined and "game-ified": a sector of space, with all its stars and planets, is displayed on the same size map as one interior deck of a shipwreck, or the explorable planetary landing zone around your shuttle. And the time it takes to move in any of these places is "one turn".
No drunk cats here.
But you can shoot a hole in the wall of a pressurized shipwreck and everything (including you) will move in the direction of the escaping air.
The dividing line is "fun": ignore reality where simulation would be tedious, but embrace it when it can be used creatively.
Approaching Infinity is my life's work, and it was conceived, prototyped, and kickstarted in 2013. It was published by Shrapnel games in 2015. I finally got the rights back to it in 2020 and brought it to Steam Early Access, where I've been improving it ever since.
This passion project is the perfect expression of my eternal love of science fiction and strategic RPGs. I plan to finish the game in 2025, but I don't know if I'll ever stop adding content...

Still going through it but I like it. Started out with 1 ship showing for me, the rest didn't show for some reason that are locked like it did in the preview so I knew they were there, but someone that didn't know may think there's only 1 ship and there's a lot more. Once I created a 2nd toon they all showed and most show how to unlock them. That feature where you have to discover and unlock things is a staple of the genre and something I really like / goals to work towards. Some captain classes are locked as well. Random gen is a big plus. There's win conditions if you want, or skip them if you want. Factions, quests, discoverable lore, uniforms, codes, planets, derelict ships to explore, and who knows what I haven't found.
There's minor bugs but it's EA and they're not an issue thus far. Some things I'd like to see is a deeper mechanic with scanning. As it is you got to a square and scan a planet or ship to get an idea what your away team will experience. I would love to see a scanning mechanic like Eve has where you can use scan probes to triangulate signals for various sites / resources. Sell discovered site cartography like you can do with fully discovered planets, or mine resources or gain items / rare loot depending on what site you find. Lots of potential for stuff like that or maybe there is and I haven't found it yet. I'd get it again for sure.
easy to get into, enjoyable rogue-like
This game is a hidden gem and a 'space-sim' I've been looking for. Gameplay is all about exploration and you get to be a space ship's captain. The universe is full of planets, space stations, ship wrecks, warp gates and autonomous NPCs going by their business. Systems feel like they are full of life like in Space Rangers 2. The amounts you can do in this game are massive. Exploring planets and space are both really fun. Incredible game and great job!
A fantastic game.
An very additive "adventure on grid" game. Brings back the same feelings as the old EA StarFlight game while including a bunch of modern RPG and Rougelike mechanics. Has a great "start weak, become strong, enjoy the ride" vibe. No stunning 3D graphics, but the mechanics really pulled this old turn based gamer in.
12 hour impressions - very good! hard to put down.
i played the demo a little while ago and owning the full game now, i have managed to survive over 30k turns and 12 hours of gameplay, traded in my dinky scout ship for a destroyer, trained my crafting skill to outpace the tech level of items found in my current sector by more than double, and basically still sweeping the space floor with any enemy i come across. still some surprises though that require advancing further and returning later with better gear.
i love the music, soundtrack just full of bangers that overflow with campy scifi adventure goodness that makes you want to explore just one more planet.
however one thorn in my side has been consistently being locked out of keyboard inputs after switching to a different application and back, although i probably experience it more than a usual player would as i have a bad habit of constantly alt-tabbing for one thing or another. if you also suffer from alt-tabism, this bug will likely train you out of that, but i would really appreciate it being patched.
it was really cool that i got to name a planet and add it to the game's online database! anyone discovered an "Errahl" yet? let me know! :)
Wonderful traditional style roguelike in a sci fi settings. Feels a bit like star trek with the away teams, and missions, and visting various star bases. fun stuff.
I picked this up two years ago, but bounced off the UI and had trouble getting into the gameplay.
Recently I checked on the game's progress and saw that there's been plenty updates, including a UI overhaul, so I decided to give it another go.
And then I quickly sunk 40+ hours into it. :D The UI is so much better now, and the game much more approachable for me. I love me some procedural generation and an infinite galaxy to explore. And the game has a strong "just one more planet"/"one more wreck"/"one more sector" pull. And every time I feel too safe and think I've become really powerful, some cave will nearly kill me. :D
I think some UI interactions could still be a bit streamlined - e.g. extracting crafting materials from ship parts requiring a click + confirmation feels a bit clumsy, but those are minor quibbles at this point.
Nice game with frequent updates, but I'm waiting for the 2.0 release to actually play it.
Really unique. Evokes that old Star Trek game on NES but on DMT.
A contender to the throne of "Traditional Style roguelikes that aren't overwhelmingly punishing if you don't want them to be" that always just had TOME and ADOM at the forefront.
yes
Great game, it's being regulary updated and it's ton of fun!
I recommend it to everyone who likes roguelike games :)
adssadas
Star Trek simulator.
Do you like space games? Turn based stuff? Roguelikes/lites? Loved shows like Lost in Space and Star Trek? Maybe you just have a crusty Earth-chan in a mason jar? IDK, but you should buy this. Such a labor of love by the dev, and one of the best games I've played in any genre. Easy to understand and learn, options galore for difficulty, massive adventures, customization... yeah. Just buy this already. The price is beyond worth it.
👍
this is really fun! found some cool little scenarios
I bought this years ago and have played for many hours. It's a good game, but redoing the crafting makes it great. I highly recommend this game. It's not my favorite RL, but it's pretty darn close, and definitley my favorite space RL.
InFUNity
Excellent rogue-like !
If you enjoyed FTL and Starsector, you will be right at home.
Smooth gameplay with a quick interface as in classic roguelikes, a one-more-turn feeling, and you can have a fairly long adventure even on permadeath setting.
Definitely recommended !
I sometimes have a hard time putting thoughts to words, so I'll skip over any mention of the awesome gameplay and limitless procgen that others before me have explained better to say merely this:
The soundtrack is an unexpected banger.
This game goes so far with inspiration from worldwide success.
great game, great dev! if you like star trek, this game is for you.
Very fun little traditional roguelike where you get to play the role of a space ship captain with a clear influence from Star Trek television. There are two separate phases of play: you explore a sector and combat various enemy vessels, and you can lead a away team to any of the planets you discover.
You can customize your run in a lot of different ways: ship type, ship gear, crew roles, crew gear, crew skills.
If you like games like Caves of Qud or ADOM and you like Sci-fi then this is 1000% for you... and while that seems scientifically or at least mathematically impossible the game clearly employs some sci-fi tech that allows it to work out.
The UI isn't perfect but does a perfectly adequate job, and honestly UI/UX is perhaps the hardest to get just right.
Wish you could customise the equipment of all your officers but its treated as away-teams equipment but so far that's my only real complaint.
Very solid traditional roguelike space sim. Lots of replayability, worthwhile meta progression, and a variety of viable play styles. If you're a fan of the genres this is probably the best combination of both!
Absolutely terrific roguelike, plenty to do, easy to pickup and lots of fun.
Fun lo-fi free roam space adventure with a passionate dev that still updates and improves the game in major ways. Worth the time and the money spent if your a fan of this genre.
So much stuff to do, so much to see, and I have only gotten a good look at what lies ahead.
BTW, :heccloadofhearts: to the last publisher due to what i heard about them...
If this started as TOS: The Roguelike, I wouldn't be even slightly surprised. I've lost count of the ways my brave red-shirted away teams have died.
Just started but it's rapidly becoming my favorite roguelike.
It took me all of 10 minutes in the demo to decide I wanted this game. Its a fantastic little space exploration roguelike.
Saw the game mentioned on reddit way down in the comments, an thought it looked ok so added to wishlist. A few weeks later it's on sale and I saw there was a demo. Didn't think I would enjoy it, but ended up doing 2 hours on the demo in one go!
I've now done 2 hours in the full game, an I really like it! The UI is really clean and easy to read, the tutorial is ok (considering most tutorials in games are terrible, OK is a good thing!), the controls take a bit getting use to. But the game is really fun and alt tabbing works without issues.
Small tip, you can loot stuff on planets / ships when walking over them, BUT if you stand beside them and hit them, left click tile then press F, it breaks them so you get scrap and sometimes other stuff. I've left so much stuff behind on other planets before knowing about it!
I can't remember that being in the tutorial, so might be handy to add that if you reading Dev's
Sat down to try it out and played for nearly 9 hours, good game so far.
Really loving this game so far, can’t wait to see what the dev has in store!
I don’t normally love the DLC model, but I’d be willing to fork over some money for future expansion packs on this game if the dev would be willing to keep updating it. It’s that fun. I can just imagine this game getting more and more in-depth in such fun ways.
Great roguelike! I've played for four hours non stop and I want more!
The procedurally generated worldbuilding of the roguelike genre are a great fit for the infinite void of space. Lots to do in this surprisingly forgiving game: Kit out your ship! Get your redshirts killed on alien planets! Become a space do-gooder, become a pirate, or just help a scattered human race take revenge.
This game has many ways to find success - which is nice. I've played roguelikes where the developers clearly have a "there is one true way to play" mindset and unless that particular approach appeals to you, they become absolute slogs. Approaching Infinity gives you a lot of freedom to play in ways that are appealing to you, and sidestep or minimize approaches that don't.
Another great traditional roguelike for my collection! Quite a number of cool little systems that make it unique and give it a particularly neat little star trek kinda vibe.
It's a roguelike with echoes of all of the good 80-90s space adventure / RPG hybrids (Star Control, Starflight etc.) and plenty of it's own charm. The dev has sustained development on it for years, and it continually improves despite being a fairly complete game years ago.
Well worth the play in it's current state.
Great "little" Gem that is still evolving with a dedicated Dev behind it. Anyone who is looking for a nice Space-Rogue, download the Demo or (even better) buy it and support further development of "AI". Approaching Infinity is a sci-fi roguelike that takes the genre into the vastness of space. Players explore an infinite universe filled with procedurally generated planets, star systems, and various alien species. The game combines traditional roguelike mechanics with the complexities of space exploration.
Space bulls with an obsession for boxes. Hardscaping that tells a story. Lightning shotguns and the end of humanity...
Some say you can finish this game in ten hours. I've put 40 in to a single run and can't imagine wanting to win. There's so much to see and do and a surprise around every corner, under every rock, and even hidden in plain sight. And I've maybe just now scratched the surface...
Get this. You'll love it.
