Pleasantly suprised by this game. Its ben in my library for well over a year before i played it. This game needs more recognition, perfect point and click game, humour, medium to hard pzzzles and cool story
Fun adventure. I wish there were voices for the characters though.
I thoroughly enjoyed this game. I like its humor, the puzzles are not too hard, and it's nicely drawn. A true indie gem.
I appreciated relatively quick animations, compact "rooms" and concise dialogue. This enables to try out solutions in fairly quick succession without having to pause for an exposition dump or to watch the character move from screen to screen.
It is indeed fairly short - well under two hours including the bonus mini-adventure, and it is text-only with no voice acting. Recommended to buy as a pack.
Some fatass, and his crew, threw my sandwich on the floor, so I left a permanent (or rather temporary for one of them) reminder to not fuck with my food. Short game, but really fun!
This review is part of my mini-project to review all four of the Johnny games. The Revenge of Johnny Bonasera is a 4-part episodic series by independent developer Rafael García. The series began in late 2016 and concluded in early 2020. The developer has floated the possibility of doing a fifth game at some point in the future, but the series is currently finished; The four games that are out tell a complete story with no loose ends. Each game in the series takes about two to three hours to complete, and each successive game is a bit larger and more ambitious than the previous entries.
The series follows a physically weak but terribly ruthless young boy. In the first game, which works as a standalone title, Johnny takes revenge on some teenaged punks who ruin his sandwich. The second, third, and forth games change course a little bit and follow a whole story arc as Johnny takes revenge on some aliens who have abducted his mother.
My overall impression of the series as a whole is positive. Johnny is not as big or as flashy as many other games; but it doesn't feel like it is even trying to compete with those. I am writing these reviews on Jan 2, 2020, the day after Adobe Flash officially died. Johnny feels like exactly the kind of game that would have existed and thrived as a mega-hit on a site like Newgrounds or Kongregate had it come out 15 years earlier. With the basic cartoonish art style, large and crudely animated sprites, vaguely adolescent humor, and simplicity of design, the series brings me a certain nostalgia for that era of gaming.
This is the first entry in the series, and while I like it, I think it is the weakest of the bunch. I know that this particular entry frequently goes on deep discount and has even been given away for free, in order to draw players into the series. If you would like to buy this to test it out, keep in mind that the best bits are still yet to come. I believe this one was made as Rafael García was still finding his stride as a developer.
In this entry, Johnny is up against three teenaged punks who lightly bully him. He decides to pay back the minor slight by absolutely ruining the bullies' lives. The punishment he doles out is way worse than the initial incident. While Johnny does some real ruthless stuff in all four of the games, he has absolutely no chill at all in this one.
The first entry ends on a cliffhanger that sets up the remaining three games in the series. It also includes a very short but enjoyable bonus game, accessible from the main menu, which gives us some backstory for one of the game's minor characters.
A fun point and click game that you could beat in an hour. The graphics are vivid and cartoonish. It is worth playing but I would wait for a sale. I'm looking forward to play the rest of the episodes.
A lightweight game for lightweight adventurers. Enjoyable enough but very short. Buy it only on sale.
Little point and click game, that was made with a lot of heart. Might not solicit any chuckles, but it is a nice diversion for a bit. I would only recommend purchasing at a huge discount, given the length and breadth of gameplay. There is a bit of music and a bit of (public domain?) sound effects, but nothing compared to the extensive assets contained in other similarly low-cost p-n-c games on steam. You will get a sense of supporting an indie developer, but with other chapters already selling here, this first chapter should have been a no-cost introduction to the series.
I played this game on ubuntu linux 19.04 without any technical issues. The game uses a java-runtime engine, and it takes a 130 MBs of diskspace. The game contains a tiny bonus episode, as an extra, which is accessible from the menu.
Johnny Bonasera is a young boy that prepares his revenge against a violent punk gang. The plan was quite simple. Johnny must solve timeless inventory puzzles until the revenge is taken and the punk gang to beg for his mercy. "The Revenge of Johnny Bonasera" is a classic point and click adventure with the main actions the combinations between your items and the many hotspots on the scenes. It has not riddles or other puzzles' variations during the gameplay. The overall presentation played as a cute game with easy and friendly interface that felt more like a test on the whole premise rather than a completed game experience.
The story of "The Revenge of Johnny Bonasera" is just as its title says. Johnny Bonasera eats peacefully his sandwich until suddenly he is bulled and beaten wildly by the punk gang. From this point and on, the vendetta starts. Johnny Bonasera searches to find about the favorite personal things of each of the gang's members separate and then he prepares his evil plan on how he will destroy them with fury. There was not intriguing plot or branched paths afterward, so the dramatic structure stayed at its plane bare-bone.
The graphics had an interesting approach in the style of the South Park series aesthetic. I am really fond of cartoon graphics, such as the Disney-like images of the "Curse of Monkey Island" or the recent beautiful hand-drawn paintings of "Broken Age", but this minimal approach fitted totally the tone and the actions of the game. The simple sketches didn't convey lot of personality to the characters, but this was not a drawback as the game had the flavor of a comic book oriented more for smaller ages.
The audio was the big minus of this adventure and shouted for its amateur side. There is not voice over and the whole game is musically underscored with various classical pieces. I understood the thought of the designer Rafael García to create the atmosphere of a silent film with this initiative. The piano performances of pieces by Franz Schubert and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart created a playful attitude, but they did not offer anything to the backgrounds or the characters. In addition the musical score didn't put a narrative sublayer to the fictional setting of the game. Many adventures from the golden era have soundtracks with this property that are worth of listening and studying. For example the soundtrack of "Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge" is lauded for its leitmotivic description and geographical orientation that characterizes persons and locations respectively.
On the other hand the puzzles were the big plus of the adventure and fairly showed its merits. The difficulty was normal, there were lot of interaction between the locations, the icons of the items were big and detailed, there was not pixel-hunting and most importantly there were plenty of the noted "a-ha" moments of the adventure genre. Although some of the puzzles lacked of clues, like for example the kid that asks for cigarettes and you as a player didn't have a clear impression at where to get them. The game uses the traditional verb-coin interface that suited perfectly the small duration of the adventure. I am not usually a fan of simplified interfaces because you can complete all the actions of a screen in just a minute, but this type of gameplay was fitting well in the mood and the pace of the game.
Last but not least, the designer Rafael García has already created 2 sequels (as it is evident at the finale of the game that the protagonist plans for his next revenge) and now he is developing the fourth part of the series. It is also interesting to note that Rafael García has developed the software Bladecoder Adventure Engine that the series is built up. So closing this review let's ask the common question: Is the "The Revenge of Johnny Bonasera: Episode 1" worth playing? Yes of course! It was little small game (circa 2 hours) with a unique charm and no special puzzles' complexity, but unfortunately had not a delicate story and neither memorable characters. Despite this rough sophomore adventure of Rafael García, the designer is showing a devotion to the point and click genre with his tool and his creations and I am looking forward to play his next endeavors.

If you're a fun of P&C games you're not missing anything, but if you find it on sale or a bundle, I'd say get it. Nothing to lose with a short little story. I'm giving this a thumbs up cuz I'm definitely getting the 2nd episode on sale (ofc) whenever.

I really enjoyed this one! I love point/click adventures & games of this genre & found the artwork, audio, & writing to be very entertaining. It is definitely worth it if you havent seen full playthroughs & want to enjoy a cool funny adventure for yourself.
I did find it hard to progress through the game since some of the items are not hinted well enough, & took me a couple of hours to figure out on my own without looking online for help, as you can see in my Let's Play Links above.

Very nice game. Puzzles are well designed and really mind demandant. Had to crash my brain very often to acomplish the goals. Really entertaining, I recommend this game.

This was the darkest tale of revenge that I have ever encountered. Never have I seen a soul so depraved and so psychopathic in his quest to destroy those who wronged him. And I watched Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan 5 times!!!!
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE PEE SOCK? Will it return in the sequel? Only time will tell, but this humble reviewer eagerly awaits the next installment of the Johnny Bonasera series.

The game concept is interesting and it has a modern story with a mature humor. It has some gags that made me laught in loud voice!
I recommend it for people who want to try something fresh and new (or who likes South Park).
I didn't mind the graphics being lo-fi, but what irks me is that there are about a total of 15 screens in the entire game, and I finished it in less than an hour. There's barely any sound, no music except for about 10 seconds worth. If this game was 99 cents, I wouldn't complain, but it is WAY too short for the price. The closest it comes to "South Park" is you can finish the game in about the time it takes to watch an episode of South Park.
