The game is okay, but the level design is so bad, especially on levels with cliffs where the towers target enemies below them and not the ones right in front of them which basically makes beating the campaign on hard impossible without cheating.
Ungoggled is where it's at, if you want to be able to concentrate. I love the VR too, but I'm just super happy with this game. The depth is good, not overwhelming. Lots of fun.
Super fun tower defense game! I love it! Have been waiting for this port to non-vr because although I have played games in VR, I'd like to sit back and relax and smoke a cigar while playing tower defense.
The camera needs to be addressed though. Here is my suggestion:
At the beginning of the level (before starting), move the camera smoothly from [the default starting position right now] to a nice overview position in the level, where you can see all the tower-points and the path.
This will give the user the nice starting view (like in VR), but its nice if you dont have to manually move the cam to get some overview.
At the completion of the level (after ending), move the camera automatically smoothly from [where-ever the player left it] to a nice position where you can see the level and the fireworks.
So the player can enjoy his/her victory even more, without having to manually move the cam to see the fireworks.
Finally a good alternative to Tower Wars, pitty they never followed up on that one
Does get a bit annoying with the layouts blocking weaponry's view and little kitties no selling damage.
Once you get rocketry that's pretty much all you need it seems, and no point upgrading them.
For the price it's well worth it, i played for nearly 3hrs straight on the first play through and wasn't getting annoyed until level 6/15 as the layout and having to defend 2 points at once is hard to get started.
Having played
Pro's
Cheap
Fun concept
Kitties make kitty noise and where various hilarious costumes :P
Graphics are nice
Easy to learn and it's not too repetitive
Kitty AI isn't completely stupid, it runs outside of line of sites in some cases and doesn't always come to and from the same directions each replay
Cons
The AI for the turrets can be aggrivating, ignoring kitties right in line of site or trying to fire through walls
Layouts of maps can be annoying
Selling weaponry you only get 50% of cost back
Scouts cats are very annoying, they seem to no sell damage at times
There is a story but it seem abstract
Really, hard to say, if I like it or not. First 12 levels I was bored and yawning. But the last 3 was really funny. So.
Pros:
- Unique mechanics of the enemies. They get sprayed around after the explosions, they roll after being hit. And then get back on track. They can fall from the edge of the world or fly up to the skies and you will not need to kill them. Awesome.
- Weapons are mostly useful. Yes, you still can rely on one turret to win, but not everywhere and not for every enemy. So, it's balanced.
- Well, everything is balanced and works nicely. So, what's the catch?
Cons:
- You have to turn battlefield on every start. You can't drag it with lmb to move, but you can do it with mouse wheel pressed. Not a big problem, but annoying.
- You can't increase the game's speed. Mostly, you don't need to. But sometimes it's annoying.
- You always see all weapons, upgrade branches and what they do. They're just locked most of the game and you don't know, if you have to buy a previous upgrades first or is it locked on this level, or you did not unlocked it with achievements yet. So, sometimes you have no idea what strategy to build, because you don't know what level you can reach with current branch.
- Kittens. I bought this game to rip kittens. But I barely seen, what they look like. Most of the time you have to control the turrets and enemies are way too small to see from this distance. If you want to close up - camera is not made for this, so you spend a few seconds trying to find a right point of view and then you have to go back to the battle. And there's no middle point, from which you could observe both perspectives.
- Somehow all this tiny moments leads to the boring gameplay. I don't know how.
- As I said before, I wanted to kill the fluffies. First thing I read from the plot - kittens are not real. They are aliens, who wear animal skin, because we can't stand the cuteness. It does not affect the gameplay, but it really disappoints. Like, devs just took this skin for units and it could be any other skin. Puppies, emojis, chickens, bananas... No specific story, no connection to kittens.
No. It is NOT your imagination. That look 'is' disdain. They 'are' watching you. Soon...
Kitty-tastic! Really well polished!
I'm saddened to give this game a thumbs down, I love it's concept and I'm a huge fan of tower defence, sadly however this game isn't fun for me, it's fustrating even.
The biggest thing right off the bat which kills the game for me is that the turrets quite picky of what's in their line of sight and will stop firing if the kittiens get within even a moderate range of the elevated turret, not only that but on the first level, I placed a turret on the top right and it began trying to shoot through the devide of rock seperating the middle of the path, the turret behavior just seems quite unclear or inconsistant of where and when it shoots.
Everything needed for a good game except the ability to see the playing field. Not much fun if you can't rotate the field of view.
the deadzone around the base of the towers is fucking retarded and makes the game stupid. just when you need them the most right as the little bastards are running up to the edge of your base suddenly the towers just stop working because half of their range is always untargetable no matter what every god damn level and its incredibly annoying having to replay the first wave 2794367835806988393854 times until you just happen to get lucky and not lose half your lives since the pitiful starting cash they give you will only let you buy 2 shitty towers that cant shoot anything that gets within 500 yards of their base.
Just one gripe about this game: when you play at higher difficulty levels the kitty's dont get tougher or come in higher numbers, its more like you get a bit less money and your turret operators are (or appear to be) 'bribed' to turn a blind eye and let a certain percentage through. It's either that or your HR dept start hiring morons to combat the increased Kitty threat - take your pick.
A tower defense game with cute but evil cats.
The cats can attack you from multiple points and the have different 'skills'. So you will have to plan forward and choose the right defenses to win every round.
A bit expensive but worth it. Definitely if it's on sale.
Some Achievements are bugged but the Developers abandoned the game after launch and in it's current state of "rock paper scissors" tower defense the game feels empty and soulless.
Unlocked towers have no effect on replayed missions so the game doesn't ease up no matter how long you play it for and although there are good graphics and super cute kittehs (good for cat people), this game is bad for completionists.
Could've been so much...but wasn't.
2/10 - Abandoned by the developer
I am a fan of all things Tower Defence, but I just can't get into this game.
Have tried a number of times, but my eyes just start to glaze!!
PS This despite the fact I have seven cats
Not much to say about this since the best was the image from the storepage, so recommend you to save your money and look for something else instead ;)
the game is very bad balanced and tower placement are really messed up!
as if they just was smashed down quickly right after they completed most of level design + many times towers wont fire at enemies when they are in range & each time you restart a map and build the same it's not same result you get each time = messed up somehow
(should be in early access if you ask me)
edit: This comes from a real TD player and not some casual pleb "there screams OMFG Kittens then its good no matter what... (you're welcome to hate me for not having same opinion)
But there are no way in world that i can recommend this game
(unless) you are looking for a bad experience
Overview
A solid and amusing tower defence game which provides some entertainment but in the end fails to deliver anything spectacular to allow it to rise of the countless other TD titles out there.
Also the developers releasing this game for both VR and none VR as seperate games is kinda shady and will no doubt anger some people who own this version and get a VR headset in the future, but that off course doesn't effect the game quality.
All in all, not a bad game but there's better alternatives out there for tower defence fans.
Pro's and con's
+ The graphics are quite good for this type of game
+ The higher difficulties offer some some real challenge
+ Kitties are cute
- Having to murder kitties
- The campaign is pretty short
- The campaign tries to tell a story but your story objectives don't get reflected in the actual missions
- Not much tower variety
Overall Score
6/10
A very nice pc conversion of the VR game. I absolutely loved the controls - took me back in time to my Elite days. The gameplay is almost as enjoyable as in VR. Impressive!
Kittypocalypse is a great tower defense game, i really like the way you move around, which is a nice change from, the normal "static" kind of approach like TDs in WC3. It also a adds to the hectic kind of feel, when you have waves of kitties, coming from multiple points which you have to defend.
The physics are great, and effects the strategic approach to where you place your towers great, for example where you have to place the gatling gun to make most effect of it. This does though also limit where you can place some towers, and at certain spots, both the laser, gatlinggun, tesla, and a few others are almost useless. This can make some toweres "forced" to be placed at those spots as they are the only once that can do anything. this does in some sort limit difrrent kind of stratigics, but not in a huge manner.
THe graphics are great, and so are the difficulty, some levels are easier than others, and it does require, management of your money and strategic placements.
There is no mazing in this TD, which is something i usally love, but it is not missing from the game and the feel it has. maybe in the future it could be a part of it, inform of barricades which some kitties have to avoid, and others might attack? just an idea i had as i love mazing.
All in all it is a great game, for people who love tower defense, with a fun approach. and plenty of hours to have fun.
I can't remember how many years it's been since I've last played such a great tower defence game. Kittypocalypse is definately such a game! Moving down evil alien kittens with gatlings and lasers while loving the graphics just can't be beat! DON'T wait! Try it out NOW! The level of detail that went into the gameplay strategies with various types of kittens each with different resistances combined with different weapons and upgrades all provides for superb entertainment for hours on end.
I am currently doing a playthrough of Kittypocalypse on my YouTube channel, if you would like to see some gameplay from a real person, please feel free to check out my playthrough here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ur8K5HncYJ4
I originally bought Kittypocalypse to kill a few hours here and there, what I didn't expect was to be so much fun. The game is very easy to understand as it is essentially a "tower defense" game, but that doesnt mean it is incredibly easy as there are a few ways to ramp up the difficulty. I am playing this game without the VR and it looks great for the price. So with enjoyable gameplay, beautiful maps, and endless hordes of alien kittens, I definately recommend this game!
I had a good few hours of fun playing Kittypocalypse - Ungoogled. The first few levels are easy, the middle couple of levels get tough, but the last levels are easy since most of the weaponsa are unlocked by that time. Nothing too complicated, just the right dose of hectic action and management.
The only thing that's REALLY bothering me is that some of the achievements are bugged! As a completionist, this is annoying as hell. Hopefully the devs will iron this out! I can't wait to stream this game once it's fixed!
A few other thoughts:
1) There is a lot of potential for Kitty humor in this game. Maybe hire a writer to work in some jokes - or ask the community for a few one-liners.
2) Modding - it would be awesome if users could make their own maps
3) Have a few more voice over options like 'new wave arriving'
