It’s June, and the summer heat has arrived earlier than it does most years.
By day there are crickets, and by night there are cicadas.
We’re in Hinamizawa, a small village in the countryside.
There are fewer than two thousand people here. But every year, there is an event.
This event is a mysterious death.
On a certain day in June, someone dies, and someone else goes missing.
The series of deaths is connected to the upheaval surrounding the dam construction project.
A murder case that was covered up is being reenacted.
Is it a conspiracy? A coincidence? Or perhaps a curse?
Someone who was supposed to be there isn’t.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there is.
Someone who was alive last night is dead now.
And someone who is here right now isn’t alive.
So, there is no way to avert tragedy. There is no choice but to give up.
But don’t give up.
Only you can stand up to this.

a short(er) read, but a necessary one. i think it says in the game this one is optional, but it's definitely not lol.
not much to say about it, and i'm keeping these (relatively) spoiler free, but it stars a lot of rika and the town before keiichi gets there, so it gives a lot of insight and context to the story!
"Higurashi - When They Cry"
Knew going into this Chapter that it would be a bit different than the ones so far, so I didn't know what to expect from that info. However, I really, really enjoyed it. Akasaka was a great addition to the cast and was a fun story to follow. Currently have a few ideas of what could be going on...Onto the Answers arcs.
read this chapter with voice patch mod is a must (rika says nipah)
Most elements bar the story and plot are common with the other Higurashi iterations. The focus is on the story itself, which is very well written, and artwork is secondary to the novel.
Personally I find it the most boring of the story arc. While well written and with great story development, it lacks the thrills and the darkness that make the story exciting to read in other chapters, though it does provide some context to the story of the previous chapters, especially the 3rd. It is also rather short in comparison with other chapters.
Decent music and sound effects that fits in with the story at hand.
No CGs, no voice acting, rough backgrounds, and the sprites of the characters themselves appear less often then just big plain wall of texts, often with not even background at all.
Rating: the weakest link of the series. On its own I do not recommend. 5/10.
I really interesting look into Rika as a character, althought it was a not as action packed as other chapters it does a good job extablishing suspense. I really liked oishi and akasaki (?) relationship. A lil boring compared to other chapters but still interesting as you discover more about himizawa
you know, I enjoyed himatsubushi a good amount but i feel like I always forget so much about it after I read it. I know it introduces akasaka and the idea of rika knowing way more than she lets on, AND a really cool look into hinamizawa during the dam conflict. but I always forget most of the finer details, and I find myself not having much to say about it. it's cool, mainly exists for setup for the answer arcs and some of the bigger reveals down the line, but I'd be lying if i said i wasn't anxious at this point to get back to the action in present-day hinamizawa lol
7/10
I love Rika!
Great final chapter for the series.
The mystery peaks...
Rika best girl

Install the 07th Mod, there's a couple of console only arcs you can play on this one, one of them (Miotsukushi PS2) is an alternate ending to the series, arguably even better than Matsuribayashi.
Fantastic work as usual!
**SPOILER WARNING FOR HIGURASHI CHAPTERS 1-3**
Chapter 4 of Higurashi had a lot of heavy lifting to do in my opinion and by all accounts I think it completely hit it out of the park.
Chapter 3 literally ended with “...and then everyone died. The end.” Needless to say, after three chapters totaling roughly 30 hours, I was getting a little fatigued with the bleakness of the series. Everything up to that point was excellent, don’t get me wrong, but constantly endearing us to a cast of colorful grade students only for them to inevitably turn on each in the most bloody way possible can be a bit tiresome.
That’s why I was so pleasantly surprised by the ingenuity of Chapter 4. For starters, the story takes place before and after the main events of the series (June of 1983). This allows us to see the events from a more detached perspective. Not to mention the introduction of a new character Akasaka, a rookie investigator from Tokyo, who serves as the perspective character for the story.
Having a new perspective character helps to further distance us from the emotional baggage of the main characters and see Hinamizawa from a new light. Over the course of the story we are reminded many times how beautiful the tiny village really is and how friendly the townsfolk can be. This further cements that this is a place worth caring about, despite all the bad things that happen.
And while the story itself is by no means a happy one, we’ve already seen (most) of the bad stuff that happens already so nothing is as shocking. As a result, I would go as far as to say this one ends on the most hopeful tone thus far. We’ve seen enough things go wrong to become experts at the key events leading to the destruction of the village. Now it is time to start learning about how they can go right.
In addition to this, we also get new insights into Rika and Oishi, both of whom I’m looking forward to seeing more in future chapters.
If you’ve made it this far in the series, and are wondering if Chapter 4 is worth your time, I would wholeheartedly say to give it a shot. It is shorter, less expensive, and has a lighter tone than the previous entries.
This is my first time experiencing the series, but I’m aware of the fact that Chapter 5 is the start of the “answers arc.” If Chapter 4 is meant to serve as a transition, I think it did an excellent job of reigniting my somewhat waning enthusiasm for the series.
No, Rika!
you can't say the N word !
I think they're finally gonna tell me where that arm is
September 15th - Higurashi When They Cry: Himatsubushi - 9h 18m - (100%) - Beat the chapter, saw all the tips, including the after-cast party.
Pros:
Due to Himatsubushi's short length, it doesn't set up any of its own mysteries but builds upon the main overarching mystery of the game. But before I get to that, first some background. The flashback setting of the chapter was pulled off very well. It made sense why the case it covered wasn't mentioned in any prior chapters, which I originally worried would be an issue. Seeing the differences in Hinamizawa 6 years earlier is also quite the contrast compared to the rest of the chapters and interesting to see.
The main plot twist that Rika knows what is going to happen beforehand including her death raises a lot of questions. Why didn't she try to prevent any of the events? Is she unable to for some reason? Why does she know what's going to happen? I think the most likely answer to the last question is that the link that Rika has to Oyashiro gives her some powers, such as being able to see into the future.
The epilogue is much more shocking than I originally suspected. Not only was Rika trying to warn Akasake of his wife's death but also pleading him for help. It paints the rest of the story in a tragic light, that Rika was doing her best but that it didn't quite work out.
Long story short: when I've read this chapter, I felt - 'My god, it's FINALLY OVER!' If you're interested in finding new pieces to the puzzles of Hinamizawa story or seeking more horror to get chilly at night, you can skip this chapter entirely.
The only necessary pieces in it to read is the first meeting with young Rika, and the very last hour of the chapter. I also highly recommend reading all the tips connected to Rika's character and her mother diaries as they are really essential to the series. And oh yeah, the Rainy Days soundtrack. Words cannot describe how much I love it, as well as the concept behind it. So if you love Rika's character, you'll find something good about this chapter... even though the whole 'good' part is completely drowned in the swarm of boredom, sloppy (?!) writing, and highly predictable plot ark that doesn't add anything new to the major story nor the characters aside from Rika.
This chapter tries to be more light-hearted in comparison to the other ones, and I believe the author tried to tell us more about S-family and what kind of power they truly had over the village. The only thing is... we already knew about all of that, and even of the special relationships between Mion and her grandma. We also knew of the kidnapping story, and we knew that the kidnapped child was safe and sound in the end. So we're wasting our time while reading through the story with a very obvious ending. Moreover, we also do not get anything new about the other aspects regarding the story. The dam drama, S-family conspiracy, Oiishi involvement - we knew all that from the previous chapters. The only part that could get us as a surprise was the new Akasaka character (that just felt like an adult version of Keiichi honestly) and his plot ark with his wife (which was also highly predictable in my opinion).
To enhance the boredom and uselessness of this chapter, the author also decided to level down his wiritng all of the sudden, and in lots of cases this chapter's mystery, drama or uhm... 'horror' doesn't even work. Although it's most likely connected to the really poor translation quality with lots of typos, dry sentences and whatnot. Definitely didn't make the story better. In lots of scenes the iconic soundtracks felt misused or not positioned properly, and most of the time you wouldn't even understand why the scary music plays all of the sudden lol. The dullness of this whole chapter really spoiled my major highly positive feelings towards the visual novel as a whole, which is a pity.
