Skool Sucks! That’s it, I don’t need to say anymore. Ok, maybe I do. I guess you’re wondering what this game is. It’s the return of one of the all time classics “Skool Daze”. Anyway, I told you Skool Sucks, stop making me teach you things! Search for “Skool Daze” if you want to find out more about the original. Use a search engine, you know the one, Poodle. No, Snooggle. No Dooogle. Oh, you know what I mean.
Meet the main cast :-
- Eric, Our hero!
- Boy Wander, The good looking one
- AngelFace, The bully
- Einstein, The brains
- Hayley, The love interest
The story unfolds over three difficult levels. Skool Daze. Back To Skool and Nu Skool.
In the role of our hero, Eric, you know that inside the staffroom safe are kept the school reports. And, being Eric, you realise that you must at all costs remove your report before it comes to the attention of the Headmaster.
The combination to the safe consists of four letters, each master knowing one letter and the Headmaster's letter always coming first. To get hold of the combination, you first have to hit all the shields hanging on the school walls. Trouble is, this isn't as easy as it looks. Some of them can be hit by jumping up. Others are more difficult. You could try and hit a shield by bouncing a pellet off a master's head whilst he is sitting on the ground. Or, being Eric, you may decide to knock over one of the boys and, whilst he's flattened, clamber up on him so that you can jump higher.
Having managed to steal your report during the last few skooldaze of term, you've spent the whole holiday forging teachers' signatures and handwriting to make yourself look like the brightest, sweetest natured, most helpful little soul ever to carry a satchel.
Now all you've got to do is get it back into the Head's safe…
A couple of years ago, your elder brother had exactly the same problem and has lent you his old copy of the School Rules, on which he's scribbled some notes in invisible ink. Holding the paper over a bonfire made from the swot's cap, you work out what to do.
You’ve moved to a more modern school. But this hasn’t changed you’re bad behaviour. All records of your exam results and troublesome going ons, are stored in the schools computer database.
In order to keep your image as a wonderful and sweet little boy who is always willing to help, you just need to gain access to a computer and delete the database.
The elderly brother of one of your new friends, had exactly the same problem and has lent you his old copy of the School Rules, on which he's scribbled some notes in invisible ink. Holding the paper over a bonfire made from the swot's math’s book, you work out what to do.
Boys shall attend lessons as shown in the time-table at the top of the screen. (Remember that
because you cheated in the exams last year, you always go to the same lessons as the swot.)
Boys do not score points by attending lessons, but may be given lines if caught in the wrong
place.
Boys who acquire over 10,000 lines shall be expelled immediately from the school.
Boys are not allowed to enter the staffroom or the Headmaster's study. Take care.
At playtime, boys are supposed to be playing and not in any of the classrooms.
Boys shall not hit their schoolmates.
Boys shall not fire catapults.
Boys are expected to walk quietly in the corridors - they are not for running or sitting in.
School dinners are compulsory.

omg!!! the classic is BACK!!!
I actually like this better than the original on ZX Spectrum and c64 and the stupid remake they had on dos 30 years ago.
You got 3 different skools. The first one the sequel and an all new story in a "nu" skool!
Problem is though, the aim controls are awkward. Also MR creek doesn't tell you his birthday year until way later.
You no longer need to write on the white room chalkboard the safe has a keypad. All you need to do is write down MR Creek's year of birth.
In spite of ctiticism I like this version!
Ratin 9/10
Lots of fun. It really does feel like the old days of computer gaming.
A great re-vamping of an old classic. Like the original it takes quite some getting used to. The controls are a mishmash of old school and modern, but until you remap them, it's a bit awkward if you use keyboard and mouse.
This actually contains two games: Skool Daze and Back To Skool, which was kinda the sequel to Skool Daze. On top of that, there's a third game too , which is a nice extension of the Back To Skool. It's really a very good bringing of the games up to date. It really respects the original work, and basically just feels like a new set of graphics, but using the same engine. Same old bugs are there, including the double-penalty for arriving late to class, etc.
You are gonna run into some problems as the game doesn't really explain everything, so I'll give you some clues:
Remap your controls: The defaults are tricky.
To go up and down the stairs, you have to start out some distance from the stairs, and walk towards them. Once you are moving, and before you get to the first step, THEN press the up/down button to walk up or down. If you start out too close, or you press up/down first, the game won't change your direction.
You can only aim the water pistol,. but not the catapult. To aim it, hold down your aim key AND your mouse button, and then move the mouse around to aim, letting go of the aim key to release the catapult. It takes a lot of getting used to, but it just adds the mouse on top of the original controls in the least obtrusive way.
To put the frog in the chalice, you need to be standing on the scooter. This is common knowledge if you played Back to Skool. The in-game hints suggest it, but it might need spelling out.
To hit the high shields, you need to ricochet the shots off the teachers, which takes some pretty expert timing.
There's no "end of the day". The school just carries on, lesson-after-lesson until you win. Some lessons you need to attend, some you can wander the hallways during the lessons without getting penalised.
Saying all that, it's a really fun little dive back into the history of gaming. The game's not hard if you're patient and observant. If you try to rush, or you don't notice a bully lurking near you, you can pick up too many lines very quickly.
Gave me a few fun evenings reliving a past I never got to play, as I didn't have Skool Daze, but I always wanted it. I feel like I've truly played it now :)
This is a remake of the classic ZX Spectrum game where you play the role of Eric and have to get your exam results from the school safe in the teacher's office, for some reason. You do this by activating all the shields littered about the school by either shooting them or by jumping up and touching them (sometimes you will need to knock out other school kids and jump on them to reach them). Once you've done that, you have to get the code for the safe (each teacher knows one number), then you have to figure out the combination, get the paper and turn off all the shields - and you win.
If the teachers catch you doing naughty stuff, you'll get lines and if you get 10,000 lines it's game over. The trouble is you will unfairly get them because the game was always broken and this hasn't fixed it. And it's annoying. Still.
This also includes the sequel Back to Skool and an original level (these need to be unlocked by winning the other games). There's no QoL stuff here, it's as unfair as it was back then. I managed to get the exam paper, but then got too many lines and lost. So that wasted an hour.
It's only a few quid, but tbh that seems too much for a game that should have stayed in the past. I give this one 4 Things to do with TNT out of 10.
Played On SteamOS.
What can I say, if you remember the classic ZX Spectrum original you won't be disappointed. Hell, even if you're not familiar it's more than worth the £5.99 entry fee. Contains both the original Spectrum games with some updated cartoon graphics, and a third variation especially for this release. Game plays just like the original - move around the school and make all the shields on the wall flash. Once all the shields are flashing sneak into the headmasters office and correct your school grades.
Bit of a pain needing to complete previous schools to unlock the next. Would be better if all schools where available from the start.
This a great re-imagining of the ZX Spectrum classics! (Both Skool Daze and Bak 2 Skool are included here!)...endless hours of fun!
Was nice to return to my childhood playing this. I never managed to beat the original Skool Daze back in the 80s but did somehow clear Back 2 Skool once!
With the QoL changes in this I did clear all 3 levels in 7 hours.
There's a nice touch of unlocking characters with unique skills, which adds some replay value!
While the new map is nice it's also far too easy because of the size. When the teacher hunts for you skipping class it's far too easy to avoid them which removes much of the challenge! The mumps event in Skool Daze never happened once on this but in the OG version it would kill 95% of runs! Doubt it'd be much of an issue here with machinegun slingshot!
i did get a teacher stuck on the stairs twice when using stink bombs!
Going up and down stairs on controller will sometimes refuse to work!
Overall still an enjoyable return to one of my fav games :)
Great Game. Terrible interface.
Obviously developers never play tested with keyboard. Whereas you can change the mapped keys, some things like aiming a water pistol simply doesn't seem to work. I don't have a console keypad thingy so I can't play.
Finished all three schools... The problem is you need to finish Skool Daze to get Back To Skool and Nu Skool on and it's the most frustrating. Get past that though and it's fairly smooth sailing. The code thing from back in the day is ridiculous in 2020 mind (get codes from the teacher and work out the order... clue - use the headteacher's number first. The game will not tell you this).
Good fun overall if you remember it back in the 80's. Everyone else might be scratching their heads though.
This game was one of my favourites back in the day! And I bought this the minute it was available!.. Love it!!... Great graphics, loads of fun, great gameplay with some customisation.
IF only, the people who made it could make another of my favourite games from back in the day!..
'Werewolves of London' ;-) ;-)
Love it!
Fun remake of the two Microsphere "Skool" games with a new chapter thrown in. What was fun then is, of course, still fun now and a bit slicker and smoother to boot with a few of the old irritations smoothed out. Some minor bugs, "features" and glitches remain but not enough to hurt the gameplay, although some younger gamers might find the old-school (ho-ho!) difficulty level and problem-solving irritating.
I played the original Skool Daze back in 84-85 - top game back then, and this one hits the nostalgia nerve as the mechanics are basically the same as in the original game. One difference is that this new game is easier to complete, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Overall, had a good time playing through this one.
Fantastic game - very well written to be like the original, including the sounds but updated to work with the latest Windows O/S - Windows 10. Really enjoyed playing this again after more than 3 decades. Once you get the hang of the keys again or remap them, the gameplay is great and scrolls smoothly.
Anyone who has played this in their childhood I thoroughly recommend this again now.
Wow I loved Skool Daze Reskooled! It's so addictive and great fun.
I have really enjoyed the variations in levels and challenges and while it has been updated and looks amazing, it also keeps its retro nostalgia.
Brought back so many memories but also the children have enjoyed playing it too. It brings the family together.
I would really recommend the game to previous gamers but also to younger people who haven't heard of the title before
A remake of a simple, yet quite enjoyable old game on ZX spectrum and C64 (although the C64 never got the sequel, included here). The mechanics are mostly faithful to the originals, with some minor changes (I remember punches knocking the other students down on the spot, instead of pushing them away, for example) that do not make the experience any less entertaining. Some quality of life improvements are also present, which is much appreciated, and the games run smoothly compared to their old, rather stiff appearances. The artstyle is also nice, in my opinion. It's simple, but the animations work well (it's the good kind of "flash game style", if you get what I mean) with the overall presentation. There are some neat details added here and there to the maps, and in a way it manages to still be faithful to the originals. The sounds are limited, but do an okay job, and you'll find some modern rendition of the old themes which are not bad either (music in general isn't jaw-dropping, but the tunes do their job just fine).
There are some nice bonuses including a new map, the possibility to play with alternative characters, and I can say I have enjoyed my time with it, nostalgia or not.
It's a simple game, but if you know what you are getting into, you can easily have a few hours of fun.
Absolutely loved this game back in the day (is my favourite) and was absolutely delighted to download it on Steam. However, very glitchy/buggy, teachers and pupils are able to walk through walls/climb stairs and go off the screen eg Mr Wacker climbs the stairs from the white room to his office and carries on through the roof of the skool and disappears, or Einstein disappears and I can't get Mr Creaks part of the code. I'm also unable to select the aliasing option.
I liked the option where I was able to change the keyboard functions/commands, learning how to aim with the water pistol in the tutorial took some getting used but once you get the hang of it I found it to be fine (i'm using a Mac). Overal, I really like the game (downloaded 24th August) but it's become unplayable and frustrating because of the glitches/bugs encountered.
Already out of date on MacOS, starting the game up for the first time tells me the game is 32 bit and will break with the next OS release later this year. For a new game it would be reasonable to expect 64bit binaries.
The controls don't work very well with mac keyboard layout and unresponsive. The catapult doesnt seem to be able to aim, trying to move up and down the stairs proves problematic at best, frustating most of the time since it is inconsistent. The game is clearly windows with a poor and not properly tested export to MacOS. Was looking forward to the nostalgia but so far found it unplayable on MacOS.
Original Review:
Loved this game on my ZX Spectrum in the 80's and want to love it again.
Unfortunately, the Teachers and Children walk through walls, climb imaginary stairs and after a few minutes I'm all alone in the school! Really looking forward to the dev's fixing the bugs but as it stands, for me, I can't recommend this game.
New Review after being fixed by the dev's faster than I could update the review:
and still love this game now! Such a simple concept but infuratigly hard! Looking forward to playing the new levels as soon as I complete the first :-)
This game is Excellent. It has skool daze , the follow up game Back 2 skool and even more. It is fun to play and well worth buying. Simple but challenging, very enjoyable and looks great as well.
Original review -
Okay, this is a game I loved on the ZX Spectrum. I have to agree with the previous reviewers.
The current control scheme feels alien! This can be great, but definable keys or at least an option of the original keymap would help somewhat! Writing on blackboards should also be
simpler as PC users have access to a keyboard. A good attempt spoiled only by the controls.
*UPDATE* 14/06/18
The developers responded promptly! Thanks Roger, this is much more like it.
This is actually great, and a refreshing version of the original. I retract my previous words, this is definitely worth playing, and certainly worth the ticket price! If you are a fan of the original, this is a trip down memory lane. :)
***UPDATED 14/06/18***
Game is much better after the update.
Thanks devs for listening to your fans.
Much bette being able to define your controls.
Correct icon appears on blackboard.
You no longer distort when going up stairs or perform any animations where the sprite performs rotations.
You can start witout the mouse!
Can easily reccomend this now and am happy to change to a thumbs up.
Still a few niggles but overall, much better.
An option to have the onscreen keyboard on or off would be nice as it's quite intrusive when not needed.
I wont get pedantic with other minor niggles as the game playes relly well now!
(one small curiosity. Screenshots don't work........thought it was me but working on other games. I think steam overlay may be picky with the way some games are rendered.)
*****************************
I was on the fence between thumbs up and thumbs down but the controls edged it to thumbs down for me.
It's the mobile controls with a PC veneer placed on top and they just don't feel right.
One example is blackboards.
There is no reason for the touch keyboard to be there on PC when you are using keyboard controls.
Even the icon that flashes up as a tool tip is telling you to touch the screen, not the key or pad button you need to use.
When using the keys, I also couldn't find the key that starts the game (is there one?) and had to use the mouse.
These are common problems with games that are mobile ports.
The time is not taken to put proper controls in for the platform and the end product ends up a mish mash of 2 control schemes.
Rip the the touch, cursor based controls out, put in some user definable keys and buttons and slap on some anti-aliasing and you'll be onto a winner.
I can understan there being restrictions on graphical effects on mobile but don't skimp on the pc.
The graphics themselves are perfectly passable, they jsut become super "jaggy" when there is any rotation involved.
Prime example is when Eric jumps.
All the above being said, it is still a decent game.
One I didn't want to thumbs down.
I was excited when this was announced for pc as I didn't play the mobile version for more than 5 minutes due to controls. Just didn't work for me as touch screen.
It's just a shame the controls while an improvement, are still pretty off putting.
