Really fun game :) ! I usually don't play VNs too much, but I enjoyed the kitschy, creative humor, all of the options for branching storylines, the vivid art and soundtrack and creative writing and characterization. I LOLd many times... >_< ! Chad can keep his tentacles to himself. If you want to laugh and would like to play a light-hearted, silly and fun VN with heart (and you like that sense of humor), I would highly recommend this game! I hope to see more from DoubleBear in the future :D !
Story is a bit too wacky for my taste. Although I'm sure others would like this.
Cute and definitely worth it if you like quirky visual novels.
A zany, lighthearted parody of... well, a great number of things. Superheroes, high school-centric media, video games, science fiction, fantasy, spies, super robots, and the list goes on. If you're looking for deep themes and nuanced character development, this ain't it. If you're looking for romance and gritty realism, also no. But if you're looking for several hours of silly fun, this might be just the ticket.
It`s okay. Just okay.
I should have tried the demo first, because straight-up visual novels are just not my thing.
From the description and title, I expected a game of stats training and meaningful dialogue choice challenges. PANIC is an endless sequence of a dozen pages of fluffy text, then an inconsequential dialogue choice. After playing a few in-game weeks of just mashing the advance button, it did not feel like my character was at all changed due to my choices.
And the game is setup to do multiple playthroughs, because you are stuck in your school clubs once selected. It is hard to imagine playing through this again, because it just takes so long getting through all the banal text, for each day. I realize the text is supposed to be funny, but I just found it boring. There was no connection with the characters, so I had trouble feeling anything about the story text. Reading the text becomes a headache, as the game also shakes the screen on every third page.
That said, I think this is an honest effort, and the art is nice and the text is proofread. I just could not imagine recommending this game. I played this game on an ubuntu 18.10 system, with an xbox type controller. I had one technical glitch, where the font on the "weekly tests" did not display correctly. This game is written with the RenPy Engine, and the install size is 950 MB
Update 08/2021: time in-game is from farming trading cards. I tried to play the game again, and it is even worse than I remembered it. Not sure how this passes itself off as a video game.
I wasn’t aware when I started Panic at Multiverse High that it was more of a comedy that is mean to poke fun at visual novels. It didn’t take long to see it though and it worked well for it. You will join school clubs, befriend different characters and buff up your stats to face down the school bully. There is even a plot twist thrown in for good measure. I normally don’t go for such light hearted games but PANIC had a charm to it I couldn’t ignore. I only really cared to interact with two of it’s characters but luckily that is the amount you need to so it worked out just fine.
I played PANIC on Linux. It never crashed on me once and allows for manual saving with plenty of save slots. I didn’t notice any spelling errors. I beat the game in 2 hours and 13 minutes.
I enjoyed the game. The plot twist didn’t really fit well and there were only a few characters I cared for but the humor was good and it was enjoyable. I would recommend the game and say people should at least give the demo a go. I paid $5.49 CAD for it and felt it was worth the money.

A visual novel, hmmm. Bought this just to support the developer because of their previous game Dead State which was awesome. But this game, well, this game is like a hobby project. I can see a lot of effort went into making this, but ermm, it is not good. This game is designed with re-play value in mind from the start, the writer whom I assume is Annie made it so that you can be interested to try different paths after your current playthrough(one single playthrough took me about 2 hours with no dialogue skipped). The story is about you as the protagonist defeating your single enemy which is a school bully using three different tactics, by way of dialogue choices. If you are reading this, I am just giving this game a thumb up to support the developer for their future game, this game is not good at all. Sorry Annie. Please make Dead State two mkay?
Panic does an amazing job of having a large cast of wildly different characters who are all likable. Even the bully who can't think of good insults wormed his way into my heart. It's hard to choose a best friend, so I definitely think I'll be replaying it! The writing isn't anything complex, but the humor shines through the dialogue. The Drama club is definitely my favorite so far! And for the cheap price, this hits all the right buttons!
A wacky dating sim parody with great art and fast-paced comedy. The large cast of characters is a strength as well as a weakness. They lend a lot of variety to any one playthrough, but you'll need at least 18 playthroughs to see all of their scenes, and the linear story and slow skip function (at least compared to other Ren'Py games in my experience) make this a bit tedious. It would have been nice to have more randomized events, a choice of classes (so you couldn't get them all in one playthrough), and/or extra scenes in class with your club friends to make each playthrough a bit more fresh. But definitely check out the demo; if it seems like your kind of humor, the full game will be a fun ride well worth the price. As long as you don't try to get all the endings in one sitting, it shouldn't wear out its welcome.
This is the first time I've ever played a visual novel game before. For my first time, I became very invested into the characters. Unlike some other visual novel games I've seen, the characters in this one not only vary personality wise, but are also very different because of their physical appearance. As opposed to some other visual novels, where all the characters are average people, you have a huge variety characters that you'll meet whom are all charming in their own way. You'll need to complete at least three playthroughs in order to meet all of the characters in the game, and each one will take roughly two hours.
The idea of the game is pretty simple. Take a friend to prom, and succeed at school. You'll be spending your year becoming friends with the people who you meet in your clubs, and you'll have to become best friends with one of them. The person who you click with the most will be based on the decisions you make as you play through the game. By spending time with a person frequently, and adding to your niceness, coolness, or toughness, the person who you befriend will be different. Succeeding in school is also important, so pay close attention to details as you play the game. You'll be given four tests through the year, with four questions each. You'll have a final grade at the end of the game.
The characters are all charming and interesting in their own ways, and that's where a lot of the heart is in this game. I'll be honest, picking your best friend can be kind of difficult, mostly because many of the main characters are very likeable (I went with Cupcake from Music Club on my first playthrough). The game has some replay value to it as well. As I said, you wont get a chance to meet every character in the game on your first try. However, there are multiple endings you can get in the game if you keep playing once you complete it. Finishing the game also adds character pictures to your yearbook, and grants you points to unlock gallery images of characters and backgrounds.
I do have two complaints, however. They both have to do with my best friend in the game. I noticed first that as you progress through the game, the interactions you have with your friend at certain points are repeated. I admit that it was a little disappointing. Like I said, I became very invested in my character that I met, and wanted to see more from them. Which leads to my second complaint, which is that the game is a little too short. Perhaps I became too attached to the odd charm of my friend character, and kind of wished there was more.
Overall, I do recommend this game. Unlike other visual novels, this one had charm to it as opposed to some awkward adult theme. It feels like something Nintendo would put out. And while I wished that the game was longer, it gives a very feel-good vibe that makes you smile and chuckle all the way from start to finish.
Just finished my first playthrough, I chose to be cool. I think I succeeded. Will need to do another playthrough and choose different clubs to see how that effects the gameplay and story. It's definitely worth checking out, some of the characters are really funny and mischevious and allow you to grow attached to their odd personalities.
If you are looking for a casual game, that is structured around relationships and story creation, like to read, and are into synth, you should pick up PANIC at Multiverse High. If you are a pop-culture nerd there are several meta jokes in the story that if you read carefully you will pick up on, and some you will get even if you don't read carefully.
It was a nice distraction from all the shooters I've been playing lately, and if you are looking for a game where murder and violence aren't the only way to solve problems, you might enjoy PANIC at Multiverse High!
This is absolutely a tongue-in-cheek parody of both a visual novel and science-fantasy superhero caper. I personally loved it. A playthrough took roughly two hours and with a handful of saves to go back and choose other paths.
There are three stats to choose from - Cool, Tough and Nice and associated activities and people to befriend and pratice with. Everyone is a stereotype and they work really well in a multiverse setting. I enjoyed the handful of NPC's I ran into in my first playthrough and now really the question that remains is... save scum and do everyone else from the clubs I unlocked or a fresh start and different trait/club combination?
Great game. Adorable and charming, the low fi art style really fits with the theme and I actually do hope for a real sequel. Now to get back to the PANIC!
10/10 Would hit jerkface bully in the eye with mints any day of the week.
