aggressively mid 2d platformer, controls are kind of sloppy and enemy patterns are hard to determine. not the worst 50 cents you could ever spend though
soundtrack is fun too :)
Super Jagua is an excellent 2D retro-style single-player platformer that pays homage to the classic platformers of the 80s. It's a true gem for fans of classic games and provides a nostalgic gaming experience with its old-school gameplay, graphics, and soundtrack. The game has eight worlds, each containing four handcrafted levels, providing a significant amount of content for players to enjoy. The game offers challenging gameplay, with no saves and no continues, which adds to the nostalgic feel of the game.
The graphics in Super Jagua are spot-on, with every graphic created from a single 24-color palette, which gives the game an authentic retro look. The full 8-bit chiptune soundtrack complements the game's graphics and helps to transport players back to the 80s. The game's story revolves around a brave dog embarking on a journey to save the beloved princess and her little puppies, which has been kidnaped by a mysterious demon.
The game's controls are smooth and intuitive, making it easy for players to run, jump, and swim through levels, discover secrets, and fight bosses. The levels are well designed, with a variety of obstacles and power-ups to keep the gameplay interesting. The boss fights are epic, providing a real challenge for players.
In conclusion, Super Jagua is a must-play for fans of classic platformers and anyone looking for a nostalgic gaming experience. The game's challenging gameplay, retro graphics, and chiptune soundtrack provide an enjoyable gaming experience that will keep players engaged for hours on end. I would highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a classic platformer.
A clone of SMB with an awesome soundtrack and cute visuals. There are loads of challenging achievements to get, and many secrets spread throughout the levels, also the bosses are much more fun. Well worth the $1, but there are a few things you should know:
1. There is no saving the game, you must beat it in one session without closing it or getting a game over.
2. The game is more challenging than it seems. If you're experienced enough with platformers then you can probably beat it in your first few attempts, and it isn't as hard as the original SMB, especially if you use warp zones, but it isn't easy either.
3. The spot where you can bounce off an enemy is very small. You need to aim for the center of their heads. If you come in from a diagonal angle you'll just take damage or die. It isn't like SMB where Mario kills anything while he's falling. This applies to bosses as well. Sometimes you need to hit the head, others the tail or backside.
4. The game ran very slowly until I took it off fullscreen mode. I haven't seen anyone else have that problem in the reviews but I thought I'd throw it in here for good measure. Obviously playing in windowed mode isn't as fun or easy, it stays fixed at like half my computer display.
5. Check the steam community for hints on where to find warps and hidden power-ups. And use code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, run, jump) at the title screen before you press new game for double lives.
Super Jagua is a clear Mario rip-off. But that's alright. It's a fun little game with a NES feeling to it.
But I can not recommend it.
There are no save points, you run out of lives it is game over. You get 15 lives for 32 levels or which 8 are bossbattles. You get, just like in Mario, an addition live for every 100 coins collected. The problem with the absent of save points is that you need to complete the whole game in one session. You close the game, you have to start over.
Controlls are fine but do feel a little off at times. Other than that the game is not bad.
I wanted to like the game but being forced to complete the game in one session kinda ruins it.
It's a cute little platformer with a few hidden secrets under the hood ;D Although I must admit it doesn't bring anything new to the table, it's not as frustrating to lose in, I'm not quite sure why, but I'm glad :D The only thing I absolutely despise about it is that there's no save/load feature, so you gotta leave the game on if you wanna beat it. But that only adds to how nostalgic the game feels, gives late 90s-early 00s vibes with the whole low pixel platformer like its (very clear) inspiration, the NES Mario games!
I don’t always enjoy platformers but I was willing to give Super Jagua a shot. I really tried to like it but just one issue after another made me quickly dislike it. For starters even though on Steam it lists “Full Controller Support” it didn’t work with my Logitech F310 or my Steam Controller. Both work with other games. I tried on two different distros, Manjaro and Linux Mint, and had the same issue on both where the gamepads didn’t work at all. I then tried to use the keyboard but it just felt unatural and the movement felt strange and not responsive enough causing me to mistime jumps often. Then came the last and final issue, the nail in the coffin: the game has no save system. You are expected to complete it in one playthrough. I can understand this as an option, a sort of iron man mode but to have no save system at all is just lazy in this day and age. The game does have a decent soundtrack and uses next to no system resources allowing it to run on a potatoe of a computer so it isn’t without some positives but they don’t come anywhere close to outweighing the negatives.
I played Super Jagua on Linux. It never crashed on me once. It is locked to 60 FPS and has no graphics options. Alt-Tab doesn’t work. During play my GPU usage was 2.5-7.5%; my VRAM usage was 490MB-633MB; my CPU usage was 9-10%; and my total system RAM used was 2.5GB. The game only uses up 10MB of disk space and ran at a constant 60 FPS.
I played for a total of 26 minutes and got through four of 32 levels so take that as an indication of how long the game lasts for although some levels are harder than others obviously. I paid $1.09 CAD for the game and can’t say I got my money worth in value due to the mechanics and gamepad issues.
My Score: 3/10
My System:
AMD Ryzen 5 2600X | 16GB DDR4-3000 CL15 | MSI RX 580 8GB Gaming X | Mesa 19.3.1 | Samsung 850 Evo 250GB | Mate 1.22.2 | Kernel 5.4.6-2-MANJARO
I must be wrong, there's just no way... you can't save the game? You gotta beat this game all in one sitting?! It wouldn't be the tallest task for anybody who has an hour to kill or whatever but holy mother of god, WHY WOULD YOU MAKE A GAME IN THIS DAY AND AGE WHERE YOU CAN'T SAVE YOUR PROGRESS AND CONTINUE WHERE YOU LEFT OFF?!?! Screw this game, it's fun, it's pretty much an SMB rip off but it's not bad other than that one fatal flaw, screw this game and it's dog, do not recommend. If it had a save function, hell, even a friggin' password system, then I would enjoy it but as it is I will never, ever play this game again.
i have mixed feelings about this game, because the graphics and soundtrack are dope, but it's awkward to control, which takes the fun out of it... kind of like a pretty girl who won't let you go balls-deep
This is a neat little platformer that reminds me of playing NES games. Specifically Mario Bros which I think it was heavily inspired by. It's actually quite a lot like Mario Bros in many ways but has it's own set of problems.
The biggest problem and only reason I would not recommend this is the save feature is broken. I played last night on the Steam Link and when I quit the game I said save and quit, and I saw a continue option. Today when I booted it up that option was gone and I had to start over from the beginning.
One thing that separates this from Mario Bros is the controls. They are very sloppy in Super Jagua and feel a bit strange at times. It's nowhere near as precise as Mario Bros.
In Mario Bros when you get hit your character shrinks and if they are already small they die. In Super Jagua your character will flash when hit for a second and then go back to normal. For a long time I thought I also could take 2 hits in this game but recently it was only 1. It took a while but I finally figured out that if you are holding an item you have 2 hits and if not, just 1. The game doesn't relay info to the player as Mario Bros does.
Cute enemies, amazing chiptune music, this really could be an alright game but that save feature is really holding it back. It will never be Mario Bros which it really wants to be but it could be decent if it just gets this save feature figured out.
I wish there was a middle option between recommended and not recommended because that is where I would put this. SInce there is not a middle option, I would have to go with not recommended, at least until the save feature gets fixed.
That broken save feature is by far the biggest problem with this game that I have found.
Its alright, the only problem i had with it was the controls felt very stiff making it hard to play, its not complately unplayable and can be kind of fun
The game LOOKED fun from the videos, but upon actually playing it, it's not. The movements are not fluid enough, the powerups are hardly usable and very sluggish, and there's a massive lack of consistency between the level difficulty and the boss difficulty. The bosses are the easiest parts of the entire game!
Now, I know some will say "you're too critical about a game on sale for $0.99", but I take gaming seriously. Quality is everything, even for games worth this amount. I have played games of all price ranges, and there are some 99 cent games out there definitely worth playing, but certainly not this one. I was horribly disappointed and this game seems unfinished to say the least. I could have kept it, but it was so bad that I requested my 99 cents back. I'd rather spend them on trading cards.
For 99 cents this game is not that bad, I remember interviewing the person who made this game on my Youtube Channel, let me just say... The developer of this game is a nice guy, very polite I liked talking to him. This is actually a really nice game, the only complaint I might have is, the difficulty is pretty hard but that's kind of the point of the game so I won't talk about that much, this game is actually pretty good.
To keep it short and to the point, this is a good, solid retro styled platformer. Fun variety of levels, a few neat powerups, and secrets scattered about in many of the levels.
In staying true to the classics, there is the risk of starting over from the beginning once all lives have been used up. However, the game offers a generous coin distribution as you play the levels, and lets you revisit previous levels completed, making it very possible to rack up lives to continue your adventure.
The only thing I don't quite like about this game, and while it is an understandable one, is the lack of a save feature. Still, once you know the layout of the levels, I'm sure it's possible to beat it in just a few hours.
Honestly though, to find a game that looks great and more importantly is fun to play, that costs less than a dollar? That's more than enough for me to recommend it.
This is probably the most accurate that a newer game has come to capturing what made retro games so great. There are no gimmicks, the physics are true to retro style games, the music is amazing, if you've been wanting to find a new "old" game, this is it. The levels can become quite difficult, and there isn't a save feature, but this is being quite true to the source material it is (accurately) emulating.
The simplicity and difficulty of the level designs, as well as the overall shortness of the game, are very reminiscent of Super Mario Bros., while the graphics, controls and various other elements are very reminiscent of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. The Steam achievements add a lot of replayability to this game. This game is definitely worth your 99 cents if you are a Mario Bros. fan or classic 2D platformer fan in general. No need to wait for a sale for this one!
Love the style, love the jams, this is definitely a fun game for anyone who loves Mario-esque platforming.
Originally when I launched this game it froze, but the dev reached out to me and told me how to fix it. Very simple fix, just go to steamapps (or something) and change vertex buffer to 1 in the config/options file.
Now as for the game, it has beautiful pixel graphics and classic platformer gameplay. Easy decision to pick this up if you enjoy things like the classic mario games!
A lot of fun to play, definitely worth the buy if your into 2d games. Gives off the nostalgia feel of playing smw. :)
It feels just like an old NES game. The graphics and music is great and I'm having a blast trying to find all the secrets.
OMG, this right here is well worth what I paid for it. Well thought out, fun, short and it brings back memories for a ton of the golden games! Well done!
