I see that they're making VR games. They should absolutely bring this to VR.
good
A shameless Myst knockoff that's 90% mediocre, 10% frustrating, and 100% forgettable.
it's fun :)
I love this game. Great puzzles, and interesting world to uncover and looks great along with great soundtrack. Everything you need.
I absolutely loved playing this! It takes a while for the story to ramp up and become engaging compared to Myst, but the puzzles were amazing and the relaxing, dreamy soundtracks elevate the overall experience to another level. Sure I had some very minor complaints including the fact that the game could've used a bit more color in its world, but If you like "Mystlikes" as in puzzle games like Myst, I highly recommend this game.
i would recommend this a lot if tyhe level design wasnt obnoxious or the puzzles just too overdesigned. the only puzzle with a logical design is mid game
there weren't enough animals or characters, overall the idea is very good, but I got tired of the density of the riddles towards the end
It made us so confused! (And it was fun!) Try it
Beautiful adventure puzzle game that reminded me of the Myst series
This game really took me back to my first experience playing Myst. They nail the ambiance, the puzzles are challenging but always fair (except the music puzzle 'cus I'm tone def).
I love puzzle games, even when they are a bit tough. This one is a bit tough for me. I had to restart it once so far. I think it would be perfect for most people, as I sometimes fail to catch all the details.
I started this game and it instantly reminded me of Myst and the following games in the series. Because it has been quite awhile since I have played such a game my mind wasn't exactly in the right "frame of mind" for playing Quern - Undying Thoughts and that being the case I was 11 hours in and decided to start a new game because I wasn't thinking straight as far as the game play goes. I am going back in and am going to "think" while playing. Awesome game !!! Can't wait to see how it all plays out.
Pretty good puzzle game, great atmosphere and music. It was quite impressive how far it went to be honest. A couple kinks I didn't like:
- Obviously I didn't 'get' all of the puzzles. The most frustrating one was the white crystal dissolving fluid. I thought the table meant how much of each substance you'd get from the juice of 6 of a flower, not how many of each flower you need to make 1 unit of a substance. Wasted a bunch of time making the potion for it to just splash harmlessly on the crystal.
- The water looks a bit underdeveloped, even on the highest settings. And on the northern viewpoint, you can just clearly see where it cuts off? Super immersion-breaking.
- Story is interesting at first, but the motives get stale after a while. It's basically the two characters repeating their opinions over and over. Not very engaging.
If you start your puzzle game with pattern-matching, then a sliding puzzle, what am I supposed to be looking forward to? Maybe the puzzles get better later on but this is just a terrible way to start.
This is the BEST game of this genre I've played since Myst... Yes, I played Myst when it was originally released in the early 90's. Puzzles were challenging, but intuitive. Fun story line, and nice graphics. Very well done, and highly recommended.
Awesome! Clearly inspired by the Myst series and very well done. Settings are capable of fine adjustments for your system and personal preferences. By turning off the blur motion the game is smooth as silk. Most the puzzles are straight forward, but a couple really take a bit of thought. Wandering around the beautiful landscape is enjoyable and relaxing. Great game to keep that brain challenged and in working order. Just wish I was smarter. XD
Beautiful world to get lost in.
Great puzzles, story, and atmosphere!
I just couldn't get into it. As you can see, I played it for a couple hours, and didn't find myself caring at all if I came back. The world (at least the starting one) is very drab, and although I instantly loved Myst and its sequels, I just didn't feel that way about this one.
If you enjoy complex puzzles this game is for you. There is more than one ending... Choose wisely.
I used to play Myst many, MANY years ago. I had a little free time on my hands (rare these days with the kids), so I looked into play it again. Myst unfortunately is not supported on Linux, so I gave Quern a shot. I am enjoying it so far!
I don't know. I've played a lot of games similar to this, but this one is just lukewarm. Everything is so grey. The map is so large, which wouldn't normally be a complaint, but its the fact that we have to run from one end to the other without actually knowing if what we're searching for is right. The game lacks clear directions. For a puzzle game, directions aren't immensely important since the whole point is to solve the puzzle by what you know, but the map is giant and everything is grey. It's hard to actually tell what needs to be left aside for now, and what is the next step to move forward. Some puzzles are really fun, however some just feel like they're "there" for no other purpose other than to be puzzles.
The story itself is just okay. It's cool how when a new area opens we get some new lore, however that's pretty much like every game ever. The guy who trapped you here is just weird, like no substance weird yk. Everything is so predictable in the story, but also weirdly intricate when it comes to the world itself.
It's just kind of meh. The puzzles are cool, but idk, it's hard to fully enjoy this game, maybe its all the grey-ness. Some of the puzzles are just dumb-hard, like they want you to waste your time running around, like they get some pride in you having a hard time. I don't know. I wish this game had soul. I wish it had substance.
Wow, I have a headache after playing this, but it's a really well-made game. Probably one of the longest puzzle style games that I've played through to the end. I found none of the game to be dull. The puzzles are challenging, but not so much so that you'll be beating your own head into a wall. I would very much recommend purchasing this.

===My Review===
Recommended
Overall - 6/10 (Good)
I'm not a fan of Myst or this style of "adventure puzzle game," where half of the game is spent trying to figure out where to go to solve a puzzle. It's easy to miss some item or lever, so it's a lot of time wasted wandering aimlessly. I don't mind widespread puzzles where an item now won't come up until a few hours later, but oftentimes it's just random things that you need to check every so often if the new item happens to work here.
That being said, I enjoyed Quern a lot more than Myst. The puzzles are pretty good, though some can be annoying or simply tedious. Overall, worth it for fans of puzzle games. Though, if you're like me and want to play it for the puzzles (rather than the unnecessary walking back and forth, back and forth), a spoiler-free guide is a great tool.
Value/Price
$25 for ~10 hours of gameplay. Buy at a discount.
If you don't plan on using a guide for any of the exploration, plan on playing for another 10 hours, in which case paying full price is more acceptable.
Detailed Review
Story/Roleplay - 5/10 (Enjoyable)
About me: The most important part of a game for me. If the story is lacking, full of deus ex machina, plot holes, etc. I will drop the game quickly. The only saving grace is if there are interesting roleplaying aspects, especially with the NPCs.
It's fine, but it's not why we play a game like this. I like the ideas, but because the focus is on the puzzles, the story is secondary.
Gameplay - 6/10 (Good)
About me: I do care about, but I am willing to ignore if it's at least decent.
Good puzzles, tedious exploration. I know a lot of people thoroughly enjoy Myst-like games, in which case Quern will definitely hit the spot. But personally, I prefer games that reward creative thinking, rather than playing a guessing game on what goes where to unlock the next puzzle. With the exception of one or two puzzles, I think they were all good -- requiring some thought, maybe some note-taking, but not overly difficult.
Graphics - 8/10 (Excellent)
About me: I usually don't care about graphics; I still play NES/Retro games occasionally.
Unity graphics, so good graphics. The level design is great, lots of scenery that adds to the vibe and overall experience.
Sound - 4/10 (Okay)
About me: I do care about the sound/atmosphere, and I regularly listen to soundtracks on my daily walks, so I download what I like, and I often think about the background music while playing.
The music is good, but it gets exhausting after a while. There isn't enough variation to keep things interesting, and it's better to have your own music or something on instead. Some sound cues could have been done better too, though I don't remember experiencing too much of an issue there.
Bugs - 0/5 (None)
About me: So long as I can still play the game, bugs don’t greatly impact my review scores.
I don't recall experiencing any bugs.
===Notes About Me===
I am not a professional reviewer, writer, developer, or anything related. I play games for fun, and I write reviews because I enjoy it and wish to help others decide on which games are worth it.
- Why I bought/played this game - Purchased on sale along with Myst and other recommended puzzle games.
- State(s) I played this game in - Generally in good spirits.
My Scoring System
The Scale:
- 10 - Loved it - Everything here is incredible. Very little could make this any better.
- 9 - Amazing - Not necessarily lacking anything but not ranked among my top favorites.
- 8 - Excellent - Everything at this level or above stands out.
- 7 - Very enjoyable - It's not perfect, but overall it's quite entertaining.
- 6 - Good - Could be better, but I still liked it.
- 5 - Enjoyable - An average score. It has its issues, but it's not to be dismissed.
- 4 - Okay - This is not a bad score. It's just not anything special.
- 3 - Meh - Definitely has problems, slightly annoying, but not bad.
- 2 - Bad - Frustrating and littered with problems. I probably stopped playing.
- 1 - Very bad - Horrendous and unplayable.
The Bugs:
- 0 - None - I did not experience (or notice) any bugs.
- 1 - A few - They are barely distracting.
- 2 - Annoying - Cause major issues but can be bypassed or avoided.
- 3 - Large problems - Can be gamebreaking, but there are fixes online or it wasn't that important.
- 4 - Game-breaking - Have no solutions. A significant portion of the game cannot be continued.
[*]5 - Unplayable - Must restart the game from the start, and even then, not guaranteed.
Fun, atmospheric, challenging, good voice acting and music. The story was alright. I`m kind of confused as to how we ended up on the island and why, but that didn't ruin it for me. The puzzles are challenging, and yes, frustrating at times, but not in a this-is-illogical-and-makes-me-angry kind of way. The game actually requires you to think and connect the dots, and you can do that with some time and effort. I did need to look things up now and again, but I found a lot of it was because I am very forgetful and have no sense of direction. I got lost and couldn't remember certain things, and that's on me, not the game. On that same note, I really enjoyed the sketch feature and that they read the notes out loud for you. It made keeping track of things a lot easier. Overall a very enjoyable experience. Grab yourself a notebook and be prepared to spend some time on this one.
Myst, set on one very densely puzzled little island.
Outside of a handful of puzzles towards the end. The game is rather gimickless which for a puzzle game I see as ideal. I would say the puzzles in this rival many other Myst-Like experiences if that is what you are looking for (I know I certainly am).
I've been looking for another 'Myst-like' game to scratch that itch of singleplayer first-person puzzle solving and stunning visuals, and this game checks those boxes.
Infact I'm seeing some inspiration from Myst IV here (in the form of the small symbols by doors at the beginning of the game). And as you continue to play, the visuals of this game get even more stunning.
Only drawbacks for this being a great game is the lack of borderless window support, and a lot of puzzles require you to backtrack (which can get a bit tedious). Plus, I'd like an option to disable the shimmer sound when Interaction Helper is turned on.
But despite these flaws, I'm enjoying myself. I like the story.
Challenging puzzles, decent inventory system, and a cool environment.
The Myst/Riven inspiration is strong but nothing is copied. I liked it, well designed, I only wish the world were a bit more colorful or the weather less depressing. The game does require patience so not going to be for everyone.
Challenging puzzles, decent experience. I wouldn't have found or figured out some of the 'next steps' without help though.....You really need to look at every single thing carefully. Overall great game.
great
This game is extremely enjoyable. Original and innovative puzzles with a calm and desolate atmosphere, it truly captures the sense of awe and mystery established by the classic games of this genre.
Excellent Myst-like game. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Had to get a few hints here and there when it wasn't clear what needed to be done next. Puzzles look incredibly hard but after interacting with them for a bit, things click and you can figure it out. Looking forward to their next game!
I didn’t expect Quern to be this… unusual! I approached it with curiosity, but wow, this game is H U G E.
Puzzle adventures like this one aren't usually my thing, mainly because they often require you to roam around the map aimlessly, hoping not to miss some tiny visual clue. But I have to admit, this game is quite brilliant! The puzzles are very challenging, but they’re definitely solvable.
The overall atmosphere is fantastic.
The sound design is truly enjoyable.
And the notebook? An absolute gem of a design mechanic—every game should have one!
But the real highlight is the story. Finally, a game with a compelling, interactive narrative that has minimal clichés and an unexpected twist at the end. It genuinely surprised me, which doesn’t happen often!
It's unfortunate that I had to resort to a guide because some puzzles were just too bizarre. And like many games, the sound-based puzzles were frustrating. Developers, please DON'T PUT THEM INTO YOUR GAMES—they tend to confuse rather than challenge. You're not the Legend of Zelda! Melody puzzles are almost always a poor choice.
Overall, 8/10.
Excellent game!
The puzzles are sufficiently difficult and intertwined in just the right way. Great for all Myst lovers and puzzle solvers alike!
I'm pretty sure people calling this game 'fantastic' didn't try to solve most of the puzzles (if any) on their own. And if you didn't make an effort to play the game as it was intended, you kinda lose the ability to judge it on its true merits.
I had some fun solving puzzles but not that much. Clues are often so useless they make the solution worse.
So if you are a real fun of puzzle games may be you will like this one, although even in this case it's not guaranteed.
Great game. Grab it if you like puzzles.
I got stuck multiple times, sometimes overlooking somothing, sometimes just not getting it. Overall amazing experience. Once or twice I had to bring up guide. The ending could be better.
Authors are working on new game, Dimhaven Enigmas, looking forward to it.
