Gives me Supreme Commander type vibes
Once you get the hang of it, it is fun. Gives you that old Total Annihilation feel. Definitely a rts I have been hunting to play since beating all of the Supreme Commander games.
It's fun. I hope they add races.
I wish more games would take this approach its simple but not halo wars simple(love that game too btw).
FUN GAME, A GOOD MODERN TAKE ON SUPREME COMMANDER. ACTON COULD BE A BIT FASTER.
Despite the warnings in other reviews, I still gave it a try. I second those talking about fighting the UI and automation rather than the opponent. For me, the first example are the icons which are wildly inconsistent and impossible to decipher. No NATO or Supcom rectangles; they're almost all vague silhouettes or weird piles of crates with gunbarrels.
Formations and Armies are a brave idea, but horrendously poorly executed and not integrated with control groups at all, plus it's hard to tell the count of what you actually have selected because there's very little communication with the user other than selection outlines. It's visually beautiful but the tutorials did not end up very much like the screenshots. Rather, automatic banners for my armies ended up out of place or missing units inside the army.
Overall, I'm glad I tried it, but the UX was pretty bad and apart from novelty, it's hard to justify keeping it rather than just playing another match of Supreme Commander (whose mechanics and interface honestly still hold up well). The graphics advantage of Singularity really doesn't hold up well when the interactive experience is so poor.
Nice visuals for a strategy, but very narrow tactically and strategically. 'Capture the flag' appears to be the only type of gameplay, a bit better than average 'capture the flag' thanks to some interesting combat options, but barely.
Issues:
- Combat relies more on your reaction time than your strategy, numbers are more often than not the winning strategy, path to victory is narrow. Strategies like drawing your enemy away from defensive lines than flanking ranged units are generally not possible, same with ambushing. Map forces you to go head on.
- 'Research' is linear and boring (you just increse damage, HP, radar range, storage capacity)
- Lacking UI. Example: Defences show their range when you place them, but not when you select them, not even if you hover over a specific weapon in UI.
- Controls are somewhat lacking and counter intuitive. Example: canceled build queue for engineers by accident too many times.
- Engagement range and map feel rather tight for the number of units involved (most units fight practically point blank).
- Environment practically doesn't exist. I didn't notice any effects from terrain besides on pathing, there is no benefits from keeping your units on high ground or on some specific type of terrain. Terrain Pathability is binary - either all land units can use this path at full speed or none can use it.
In 2 hours I finished around 7 campaing missions (over half from the selected compain) and each one was boring, may be the game blooms later or DLCs change it for the better, but I lost the motivation to continue.
After many years, finally worked on Steam/Linux. Game is good and recommended to add to your RTS collection. I think it is better than Supreme Commander though both share lot's of similarities.
Great game
I love it! I haven't played multiplayer but I find it to be a deliciously unique strategy game.
I have not finished the campaign yet but my first impression was a good one. The skirmish mode is replayable too. I think it's worth what I paid for it. I do recommend it.
good game
Not only was it pretty much abandoned by Stardock not long after they finished it, with admittedly very little in terms of features or varied gameplay, but the amount of effort that was put into balancing the two factions is pathetic. Substrate gets wrecked, period, unless the game is literally and intentionally handed to them. If there were more than two factions I might be more understanding of there being a faction that was a little above or below the rest, but in this case there are only two factions, which leads to very quick expenditure of already low replayability by itself, but also one of the two is just going to steamroll the other unless it is given an inane handicap.
TLDR: People who would like this specific sub genre of strategy would be better served looking at Supreme Commander 2, Supreme Commander Forged Alliance, or Beyond All Reason. This game is just a waste of time and money, even in comparison to the tombstone game that is Supreme Commander 2. For those who want a Stardock strategy game, try Galactic Civilizations (Personally I think the best is 2 even though it is quite old now) or Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion or 2 (2 is just minor optimizations to late game performance and a few minor new mechanics but for those who get upset at less than 144fps its there for you).
This is fab. Immediately reminded me of "Total Annihilation". Same graphical style, much updated of course, but same unhurried gameplay. Many, many options, upgrades and strategies to try which I love. I just completed a level where I built my anti-air defences close enough to the enemy lines so that the whole massive enemy airforce was wiped out as I sat there drinking tea, literally. They kept flying close enough to be picked off. I then built artillery close enough so that the constant barrage completely destroyed the enemy base, while drinking tea. I didnt need to send in a single ship.
I love this game as it meets my need of having many possible ways to beat a level.
Some of the levels use the same maps. I can forgive that. I have 18 hours in so far but I will retry the levels using a different strategy.
All for 7 euros. This includes the expansion packs too. Fab.
I love this game. I grew up playing C&C, Starcraft, Dawn of War, and Total Annihilation. I think this is a great RTS that's keeping the genre alive and well.
So I had this one on my playlist for a while, finally got some time in 2024 to play a bit.
I played 6h ? and ... I don't think this game 'aged' well at all.
Units are 'clunky' control are clunky, you tell them to move there and they move weirdly.
You tag a unit to help build another one, its take '3 clicks' to try to target correctly
Lots of random oddity that make the game.... meh ? Its not bad but not good either.
I do love RTS, I want this genre more than ever, but I think in this day and age there are way better RTS
I would have a lot more fun playing Supreme commande of AoE 4 than this.
AI is rediculous
Fun game.
Its a fun game, interesting story as well. Hard though at first, even on easy! Lots to manage. But overall great game,
I should've done my research, and that's on me, but this game is not Online Co-op.
There is no coop modes, no dedicated coop systems. The "coop" is just the PvP versus mode against the AI. That isn't coop, its just bots. I have never seen Anyone describe bots as coop.
ETA: Playing the multiplayer "coop" mode and the game constantly breaks and needs to be restarted. Not a great experience at all
turinium optimized
One of my top RTS games that I've played. I come back and replay the missions several times a year
Fun game. n the same vein as Starcraft.
Straightforward gameplay, resource and map are very easy to understand, but I had difficulty understanding whats going on in combat.
Graphics could have some improvements, make some part stands out, I cant really tell which ship is which and which does what, all ships looks the same. thats the only cons for this game.
Big potential for future.
Eh its a not-as-good Supreme Commander. Good but I'd just play that instead.
The story feels really disjointed. And just sorta...ends half way through.
This is a very impressive spiritual successor of Gas Powered Games' Supreme Commander games, if you loved Sins of a Solar Empire and Supreme Commander, then you definitely need to pick up Ashes of the Singularity!
Scratches that RTS itch that I so sorely needed to satisfy.
nice strategy game
Just no
Without a doubt, one of the most fun RTS games to come out in the past decade!
For now having a lot of fun with the game.
Gotta say that I did not touch the campaign yet at this time, only skirmish on most of the maps.
I usually dislike the strategic point capture games but this one feels much more intuitive.
I feel unit pathing is at times clunky where they will "wiggle around" or go in opposite directions then requested.
Units, especially the larger ones are nice to see, the smaller ones are usually just blots on your screen.
Using special "powers" is a nice addition, the quata (mana) mechanic to cast them is well found.
All in all a nice game to pick up if C&C Iron Harvest and Supreme commander are your thing.
How to make a beautiful looking RTS not fun.
