I have managed to lose the first race after playing racing games my whole life. Game is not bad if you don't mind losing based on luck.
Poor controls and poorly designed, what could have been a fun/silly racer is a tedious slog. The mechanics are just awful. Don't buy, even if on sale. It's not worth it.
wrecking in VR 1st person view is half the fun. worth full price. demo is fun too if you're broke.
Its an okay game, there is a reason why it only cost five dollars.
Your car will get yeeted if you touch another car or you press drift.
Meh! I got it because it's VR racing for cheap. Bad camera tracking is the biggest drawback with this one. There is still fun to be had but it's not as fun as it could've been. Maybe it good enough for you for the price, but it's not right for me.
I got this on sale for a dollar after reading some good reviews. In VR, it is certainly intense, and not for those with weak stomachs! The graphics are good - especially the trippy winding ribbon track concept. I’m about half an hour in, just getting into the weapons, and scoring some upgrades for my cars. The (up to four player) split screen is a welcome surprise – I was expecting this to be a solo game, but it’s fun for couch gaming parties, works well using Steam controllers. Solid game, and certainly worth my dollar! Thumbs: UP!

This is basically the first VR game that gave me motion sickness. I don't know exactly what it was that caused it, but I couldn't even complete a 3rd round of a race in the easy mode. Maybe the fact that the car position is not static to my head/view? Maybe too much moving around in space? (I wouldn't think so, I played eve valkyrie with no problems). I have no idea what caused motion sickness, but I'd think there's something very odd with this game, as I've played different VR games with different movement mechanics and had no problems.
If it wasn't for that, the graphics are pretty cool and the feel of is was enjoyable. Audio seemed a bit repetitive. I can't attest for or against fun factor, I didn't have the chance to play with many AIs or online and explore all the cars and powerups and whatnot. It looks like it has lots of potential, and I was really excited to explore this game. Unfortunately, it won't happen I guess. :(
It feels broken. Thought my keyboard had problems accelerating constantly, until I read about the rubber banding which slows you down to a crawl, so the others can keep up.
Was hoping for a competitor like SEGA All Stars Racing, but this is far away.
Update 2020:
The game is way more polished now. Graphics made a huge leap forward.
I disabled the rubber band, but it still feels it's in place. I'm ahead of all others and the speed bar goes down to almost zero. AI opponents are catching up and overtaking. Then the speed bar goes up again.
Not sure if that is the rubber band, or any other mechanic, but I can't figure out how this works.
I would change the review to more neutral if it were possible. Maybe it's just me. Can someone explain?
VR is actually very well done. Game has more depth than other reviews claim. It's just too bad it doesn't have online multiplayer capability.
Does not work in linux (at least with nvidia and debian/ubuntu). The game UI is messed up from the start, it is unusable at all. May be the dev should drop linux support and let the brand-new Steam Play do it's work, but who knows.
For my first Early Access game, this is pretty darn good. Not a bad way to go for $1 during the Steam Summer Sale. There does exist some balancing issues, which can make the game frustrating at times, but overall, it is all I ever hoped for in this game as an Early Access title. It's a good way to start. Oh, and the demo doesn't do the game justice. Developer, please remove the demo or update it please!
If you start a race with a mouse/keyboard, it locks you out of the Xinput controls (such as an Xbox 360 or Xbox One controller). It doesn't allow you to switch on-the-fly or on-demand. You either have to exit the Grand Prix or restart the game to make sure to use the other control scheme. My prefered method of control is a controller, not keyboard/mouse.
Racing is mostly stable, except for a few instances where spinning out is rather easy to do, when you don't expect your racer to do, or the AI force you to easily spin out. The idea is to go fast, but to do that, you need to slipstream your opponents from behind, charging a meter. The longer you do, the faster you go. I find it rather hard to keep my car continuously slipstreaming. On the other hand, the AI is rather too good at it, which leads to unfair slingshotting or rubberbanding moments. If the track bends downward for a long period of time, it can be hard to spot road hazards. A warning queue would be nice. Weapons available in certain cups feel like a last minute addition, or if implemented for a while, never revisited.
The interface could use some work. It doesn't save the last vehicle used or it's upgrades between computers (using cloud saves). Also, the menu to restart a race, you can accidentally end a Grand Prix because no confirmation yes/no dialog appears. Also wished a vsync option existed. Also a speedometer would also be nice. The slipstream meter isn't exactly a speedometer.
A track feature I hope to see is a "dash plate". It can charge the slipstream meter like 1/4 or 1/5. Hopefully LAN play is implemented, because I know that finding people online to play this game will be a challenge due to the low popularity of this game (that I wished was more popular).
It's a Unity game that runs well at 30FPS on budget computers.
Early access or not, there's no justification for paying good money for a game this broken. If Space Ribbon is trying to sell itself on a "mind-blowing" VR experience then it was a mistake to have it look like shovelware from the cover CD of PlayStation magazine back in 1996.
The mechanics of the game are bare existant. You car will speed up and slow down at random, the speedometer (if that is what it is) has no bearing on what your actual speed is. The courses all look the same, the achievements are glitchy, the music is forgetable, and it is absolute tedium to play.
I doubt the developers will make a silk purse out of this pig's ear. It's junk, and not something you should waste your time with. I couldn't get it off my computer fast enough.
The concept is a unique one, and it drew me in. However there is barely any game here. There are attempts to flesh out the game with unlockables and parts for the cars; but the races are extremely dull and unsatisfying. The sound design is almost non-existent, and the handling and controls are clunky. Definitely not worth £6.99 in its current state.
The Backgound looks nice, and the track looks ok.
The cars and sound effects are not so impressive - the sound effects are awful to be honest.
The music is nice if you like electronic music.
The game does indeed have a trippy feel thanks to the animal mouths spewing out the track, and thanks to the cosmic background.
The gameplay itself I think is just too barren at present; whizzing around a randomly generated track, where sometimes the sharp curves are hard to see coming.
Can't say I enjoyed it much in its current state. I will not get a refund, but hope the game gets more fleshed out and may try again in the future
ugly ugly ugly. The whole point of a racing game is its replabability, and this game has none. 2 friends and I tried this game and none of us had any desire to ever play again.
Beautiful Graphics, polished look, good music. Fun game to play specially with friends. Would recommend.
Awesome, works on our rubbish laptop unlike most other games. Bit hard on the Halloween level for the kids though but the rest of the levels are easy.
When I see the words Psychedelic and VR... instant buy. BUT it wasn't so "psychedelic".
But Rather just REALLY COOL lol.

I love this. Procedurally generated race tracks? MUST use Xbox controller.

If you think racing in 3rd person in VR is stupid... then maybe you're stupid.
Looking around actually helps you PREDICT where this insane track is going.
It reminds me of Blazerush but being right there IN the action.
It's the complete opposite because in Blazerush you're being chased by a spike harvester monster truck. In this, you're CHASING that MONSTER that is creating this paradox of a track. First one to touch the massive Panda or Tiger wins. (Pumpkin. Special Halloween circuit)
IMO it's worth the price. I got it for $6.50

You chase a Space Panda or Tiger on a track it spews out in space using various space cars. It's like a David Bowie fever dream, kinda. It's an experience eitherway. Cars look pretty cool, and go through an evolution of upgrades, and the Space Beasts are both fantastic and a little creepy.
Driving can get kinda clunky though, feels like there's a lot of resistance to turn around and go the other way but, on spinouts it's rather hard to get the car facing the right way. Power-ups would be nice though. Maybe run it through some tests to liven things up, races at the moment just feel a little straightforward, there's little agency other than slipstreaming but nothing to combat when someone gets too far ahead other than they can end the race.
Colour me impressed but don't "panda" to me by adding a Snow Leopard skin for the Tiger, or do, actually I'd really like that. Eitherway the potential for greatness is there, it's just a case of realising it, and I'd suggest things here and there but, I'll keep an eye out for a full release.
Space Ribbon is good fun for short bursts of time.
The visuals and soundtrack are fantastic, while the sound effects aren't so strong.
I love the attention to detail, the cars are especially cool. The graphics remind me Beetle Adventure Racing meets BLUR.
The game plays fairly well, the handling is pretty tight. When I hit the side of the ribbon road, I expected to fall off, Mario Kart style. But it just bounces me back into the linear road.
It would be great if there was some alternate paths to take or some power ups or something in terms of content while actually racing. In my experience of the game, it's pretty easy to win every race. The challenge comes really late into play time.
All that being said, this is absolutely worth the Early Access price tag of £9.99 (£6.59 on sale)
Grab it now, put up with it not being perfect and enjoy the finished game.
