This game is a hidden gem. It’s become literally my favourite splitscreen co-op game in my library, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a local multiplayer game. It’s hard to believe this game has been so overlooked and has only 9 user reviews at the time of writing despite having been released nearly 4 years ago and the fact that it only cost me $2 CAD on sale.
Mushroom Crusher Extreme is a retro-style, isometric score-attack game with colourful pseudo-3D pixel graphics and an awesome 16-bit soundtrack. It feels like something straight out of the Sega Genesis library. The game can be played singleplayer, local splitscreen co-op or online co-op, but I would say it shines the most as a local splitscreen co-op game.
Like the games of that era, the basic gameplay of each level is simple and identical: defeat all enemies in a level (or as many as possible) before the time runs out and so you can get as high a score as possible. But there’s more depth and skill ceiling here than you’d expect from a game with such a simple core premise. Combo-chaining, cooldown management and matching your spell's element to the individual enemy’s weakness is critical to reaching the high ranks necessary to unlock later levels. To help you with this, your entire attack set is totally customizable, as you can equip any 4 out of a possible 36 spells. What’s more, the enchantments of randomly looted, equipable items called trinkets that buff various stats, spells, or elements are also completely customizable and remixable and so you can create a highly specialized build.
You can spend an endless amount of time trying to combine and equip different sets of trinkets and spells to create your own perfect character for a given level, learning exactly how you want to chain spells against a given enemy. And you’ll be doing this and experimenting with levels a lot, because reaching certain high score ranks is actually mandatory to unlock more the game, you need to reach certain ranks in level to unlock new levels. It’s addictive, it’s got just the right difficulty curve and sense of progression, and I love it.
Despite my love for it, there are two glaring problems with the game on first startup that need to be mentioned so any prospective players know how to fix them.
The first is the default controls. The default control scheme whether playing on keyboard or controller (and I do recommend a controller for this one) is absolutely terrible. By default the controls are bound so that pressing up moves you diagonally up and right and so on, effectively rotating the inputs 45°. It’s confusing and nearly unplayable. Fortunately the game has a competent settings menu with several alternate control systems to choose from. I found Mode C to be perfect for a controller as diagonal inputs are handled properly. Why the devs didn’t include a pop-up menu to select your control scheme the first time you play the game, I don’t know. But I suspect this is the reason why so many people drop the game right away and so few have played it through to later achievements.
The other problem is resolution: the game defaults to 720p windowed mode of all things, and selecting other resolutions actually scales the graphics the old-school way by making the sprites physically smaller or bigger on the screen. If you’ve got a 1440p monitor, then 720p is fine, just check that fullscreen box. But for me on 1080p, I found the best option was 540p fullscreen instead of 1080p, as this properly zooms in the sprites. The actual 1080p graphics option leaves your character a tiny little dot on the screen.
All in all these are small issues solveable by the player that do not detract from this being an excellent game that I highly recommend, and for $2.19 it was a steal.
Weird fun game where you can play online with a friend. So weird but so fun too. The controls are a bit wonky to start off, but once you understand it's much better. For example, you need to hold down like LB to aim and not move or shift on keyboard. There's also a small delay before you move and such it can feel odd. But it's still really fun. It's very simple of a game, but still kind of hard too. It's also pretty short I think with some of the game hidden behind high scores? Not sure how I feel about that. Not even sure that's the case. The game kind of has a lot of information spattered at you, but if you just ignore it you can have a good time.
Really just recommend with a 2nd player though. Then they can not know what is going on either.
Great game split screen local coop. Once you get used to the controls its a blast.
Worst game ever
Even after watching some gameplay videos, I wasn't sure if Mushroom Crusher Extreme was a good game, so I was definitely taking a bit of a risk when I purchased in. I'm glad I did because this game has proven to be way more enjoyable than I was expecting! I'm still not too far into the game (level 8 out of what looks to be 24 levels), but the difficulty has already escalated in a substantial, yet not unfair, way.
One of the main reasons why I wasn't sure if this game would be worthwhile or not is how slowly most enemies move and attack. I thought this might be the type of game where it could be a real challenge to get a high rank on every level, but where there was little challenge in simply finishing a level because so many of the enemies looked trivial. I was right to a degree; the enemies are not at all difficult individually and the first few maps are indeed very easy as you have little to worry about beyond the standard hopping red mushrooms and one or two other enemy types. However, the challenge kicks in soon enough once the maps get bigger and you're fighting a greater quantity of enemies simultaneously and with greater variety between them. Those slow hopping mushrooms suddenly become incredibly dangerous when you're trying to avoid not only them, but poison clouds, projectiles raining from the sky, hazardous slime trails, aquatic octorok-esque enemies, and more all while pushing blocks and manipulating other parts of the environment to make paths while under serious time pressure.
If you only care about clearing the levels I think Mushroom Crusher Extreme is still a worthwhile purchase, though aiming for S-ranks on all the levels will definitely give a substantial boost to its longevity, challenge, and replay value. Games with isometric perspectives and controls usually take a little while to get used to and Mushroom Crusher Extreme is no exception. That said, I felt entirely comfortable with the controls after about an hour and this game is much better at conveying platform depth than many other isometric games. Local and online co-op are both supported, though you're unlikely to have any luck finding a room unless you're playing with friends since this game is still rather obscure. On a final note, I love the way this game looks and sounds. The palette is vibrant, the enemies are charming, and the energetic soundtrack perfectly fits and frantic arcade action.
Mushroom Crusher Extreme is an incredibly unique game, I truly cannot think of anything else quite like it, and its execution is phenomenal so I strongly recommend giving it a chance.
OK,I'm having problems.
1: controlling the character is weird because the game is diagonal and you can only move in 4 directions, blockwise
2:enemies that are on you do not get damaged
3:what the hell is the return button?how do i proceed to the nextt level?also escape doesn't work either
Fun game. Good music, interesting game play mechanics. Mostly played through online-coop with a friend. The skill / trinket / leveling system is pretty well balanced and fun. The balancing of spells between your party is also a cool way to encouragement teamwork / play style. Well wroth the money!
What a nice little game this is, i bought it for the art style and the graphics and end loving the game mechanics and challenge of the levels.
This game is a mix between action and puzzle, where you complete levels and challenges and get power unlocks in return.
The enemy variety is good, the levels are well tought and the challenge is good.
Another thing to notice is that the game feels finished.
Very good game more than worth the asking price.
I like the idea for this game, and so far it's fairly fun.
However, I think it would be better with some tweaks to the control scheme. I don't like how pushing up on the d-pad/analog stick makes you go diagonally northeast/west. I think making it so that you can press the d-pad/analog stick in that diagonal direction would make a lot more sense, and contribute to smoother controls.
As of right now, I seem to be constantly fighting the controls in order to move in the direction that I want to go. They're not very intuitive at all.
Edit: They tweaked the controls so that on controller, you have diagonal movement, and on keyboard/mouse you can click where you want to move and look where the mouse is. Great fixes so far and I'm very happy with how fast these updates have been rolling out!
