Kingdom: New Lands —

Rule your kingdom and guide your people to protect the crown.
Very strategic, meaning RNG can cause your game to be very easy and/or very hard.
"Nothing lasts" - Kingdom Classic
Short, Simple and Beautiful game. Not much for instructions, easy to get confused and game play is repetitive but the challenge and unique systems make for a good few lost hours. I can't even get past the second map though!!
You would think this game is easy, because it is a side scroller, but it is not. While the player must manage where to spend gold, it is impossible to cover both sides of screen because of 1) lack of Gold, 2) servants.
The game does not inform from which side those creatures will attack your settlement, just in case you covered left side and to your surprise they actually come from right side of the screen and this is always random, some nights they don't attack at all. There is 0 information on this problem. Those creature bastards If they breach your fortification will steal your gold if not from you then they hit servants and they then loose their profession which costs gold. Everything in this game is so expensive. To hire blacksmith it costs 3 gold for hammer, to hire archer (which by the way they are weak and their accuracy is garbage) costs 2 gold. To create specific building it costs even more. Gold does not grow on trees.
Player cannot control these servants at all, they cover either side by themselves and for the first couple nights it always happens on wrong side.
Too much hassle.
Kingdom: New Lands is an alright sequel to the first game. I love how although not much changed from the first game there were definitely a good number of additions and improvements to this iteration. Most notably is the new units and mounts. I love having more than one kind of horse to choose from, but the starter horse is still as infuriatingly useless as ever. I like how the game get broken up into different levels that almost make you start from scratch, but if you play your cards right you can get a huge lead into the next level. On the flip side, if you mess up in a later stage then you are effectively screwed out of multiple hours of play since you get set right back to barebones unless you go back a stage and replay it to get that early lead again. The worst thing added to this new iteration is the god awful AI that constantly attempts to commit self die at every point and when it succeeds you get set back so hard that you can consider that run a loss.
I want to like this game especially since i loved the first one, but this new iteration really dropped the ball on just the right things to make losing a skirmish way more frustrating than the first game, especially as I do not have 100 hours in life to play til I get the perfect run.
Overall I still think its a great game, but I have neither the time nor patience to properly play through what is still a three button game. It is just not for me at the moment, but in the time I played through both games I had a lot of fun so I still think its worth the price even though there were a lot of infuriating parts to it.
Horrible AI, huge random factors and generally annoying
It's a simple yet deep game, with a relaxing game loop and atmosphere.
Game is super fun, love the aesthetic, looks amazing, honestly plays like complete dog water. Game had so much potential and has absolutely terrible QOL, with zero Steam Workshop to make up for its shortcomings.
Was it worth the 2 dollars on discount? Definitely. But I won't be a game I'm likely gonna come back to,
A must have for lovers of the format. Lacking from the QOL of two crowns but can be played as a challenging roguelike for those who already played two crowns fully
if you are ok playing a slow paced game, then this is a good game
I love this game and will always love it. Even if I can see some of its flaws I always come back to it, it's a comforting, cozy game to just spend hours and hours on
I would have kinda liked this game if not for one thing - how complicated is to get into its mechanics. I spent 4 hours in game, and another 1 reading tutorials, and I still don't understand some of the mechanics. Like why npcs follow some of my orders but not the others, why can or can't I build something, and I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to come up with lots of stuff by myself without tutorials. It's not even challenging; despite all that I can still complete the levels, but I feel like I struggle through rather than succeed.
I like complicated strategies and indie games, and I really like the setting of this one, but I'm not sure I can recommend it
A cute lil game that has a surprising amount of depth and strategy. Highly recommend if you want a chill, slow burn experience
I both hate and love this game. It's mega addictive and very satisfying if you're doing well - but as others have pointed out, one mistake can cost you hours of gameplay. If it was possible to cancel building a wall or to control where my archers go/to which walls my catapult/knights go, then maybe I would change my mind but at this point, I can't recommend this game.
A relatively simple tower defence game--not too difficult, but fun for casual play. In some ways it's challenging because it makes you discover the rules and strategies on your own by trial and error. But once you understand the tips and tricks, it's fairly straightforward. I like games that require some figuring out, but aren't fiendishly difficult, and this game fits the bill. I'll definitely try the other instalments of the game.
The game is too slow; The coin drop/upgrade mechanic is super annoying as most of the time it drops instead of going to its destination; Seemingly based on luck; Not worth the time.
This game is proof that I would be a terrible leader if given any responsibility over people!
Teaboy's Basic(ish) Reviews....I read a lot of reviews when looking at games on Steam, and it quickly gets tiring – those who write involved, down to the micron scale reviews, although helpful, end up like looking at War & Peace when you’ve only got time for a quick 5 minute dump! This is middle of the road and to the point – not easy for me as I tend towards sesquipedalian loquaciousness! Vociferously Verbose? Alright, verbal diarrhoea. (Although I hate panning a developer’s work and all the time, effort and love they put into designing these – it is their life after all – this is my honest, personal opinion of my level of enjoyment. Sorry devs!).
A note on time played: My Steam clock does not seem to work properly, indeed, it even minuses time on occasion! Plus, I have a tendency to wander off and leave games running at times, so time played may not be entirely accurate!
Teaboy’s Tonsil Titillators or Toenail Titbits! (Rating)
Tonsil Tickler (Totally Tops): The frenchy of which you always dreamt! To quote a master, “She’s got a tongue like an electric eel and she likes the taste of a Man’s tonsils!”. An absolute masterpiece and joy to play.
The Tits (Terrific): Everyone loves playing with these! Not THE best bit, but such fun on their own you can be lost for hours....mmmm. What most games you really like score – perfection is so rare after all.
Torso Teaser (Taker of your Time): It’s a flat stomach....sure it’s nice to look at, run your fingers over, slobber on a bit, sometimes that bellybutton gets your motor running....but it's just basically the corridor between the two ‘gaming rooms’. The definitive ‘Meh’ - the middle ‘sideways thumb’ option for which everyone on Steam cries.
Todger/Tadger & (scroTum) Taters (Tedious): Is it an ‘a’ or is it an ‘o’? Who cares! The meat can be fun to play with for about 5 minutes of your entire day, the rest it just hangs there and generally gets in the way of doing something else. The main problem of course, is the two veg sticking to your inside thigh. This is what this game feels like – the occasional/rare bouts of fun, the rest bobbing like a 19th century British Policeman (now you know why!).
Toenail Tornado (Total Toss): A playthrough so appalling it’s like being trapped in a Turkish sauna with the ugliest, hairiest, fattest, sweatiest beast of a neolithic hominid who’s trimming his toenails using pliers and the splinters are reminiscent of a scene from the Normandy Landings. My god how did this get released!?
Teaboy Touts (Score): Teasing Tits?
The Review:
This one is tough to score. It's the final stage that does it - more than half of my playtime is for that only. I refined my tactics constantly, dying every time no matter what. Rather frustrating (British understatement).
There are differences between the 3 iterations of Kingdom (Classic, New Lands and Two Crowns), most annoying is they keep changing the button layout, just a tiny bit, but enough to be annoying. Nothing is EVER explained as to who does what and what has what effect and why to do something.
Thing is, even though it's defo a rage quit game at times, it is just so damned moreish! Every 'next day' (real world I mean) I want to have another crack at it. It has that 'just one more turn' aspect you usually get from 4X games.
Sadly, for this one I just gave up trying to complete the final stage - I noticed quite by accident that Two Crowns was on 80% sale so I just bought that and went straight at it.
So, all 3 iterations will drive you up the wall, but they keep you coming back. Its joy is its simplicity. It really is basic - go left, go right, pick up coins, use coins to get new guys, buy tools and build stuff.
I think I once sent my troops BOTH left and right on the same day....when the moon went red (result of destroying an enemy portal) I was attacked, from both sides simultaneously, by multiple breeders (big bad guys who literally spawn standard bad guys and are tough as bejeezuz). Needless to say I was massacred. Restart from zero.
And that's something I'm surprised about - that I actually played this game because I LOATHE permadeath. This one is a tad different in that you just restart the level you're on from scratch, but keep overall progress.
All in all, keeping you coming back like an addiction is a big tick in the plus column. On sale it's dirt, and I mean DIRT cheap, so give it a go. The Classic edition is even free!
Many have said just play Two Crowns, but they are different enough, just, to warrant a playthrough - of all 3 games at such low cost on sale - but yes, New Lands is harder than Two Crowns with less 'stuff'. Still, I say play em in order for the full, cheap but long experience. Great value for your 'coin'!
There's no reason to play this instead of Kingdom: Two Crowns, its way worse than the latter version and you don't really lose anything.
I really don't this game for a sizable number of reasons that make gameplay very frustrating and/or tedious. I was honestly just not really having fun, merely putting up with the suffering after so many hours, until I said "Nope, this isn't worth it anymore. Forget the achievements, I need to uninstall this." Sure, the first and second island can be okay, but after that you can begin to see there are some serious issues.
1) Core gameplay has you running back and forth from one end of your fortified area (and the wilderness beyond) a LOT, just to do anything on the third island, and by the forth it's just purely waiting for your character to get there while you hold your movement key. And that's just to make sure you can keep recruiting enough units to keep your defenses from getting overwhelmed, as camps get spaced farther and farther from your campfire on later islands. While there are several things in game that do help with travelling some, they don't provide anywhere near enough of a benefit to be alleviate this issue enough.
2) Unit AI/control of such is poor to awful depending on what's involved, and what you want to be done. Units will move up to defense a weak wooden barricade that I might want to use to slow down an assault, or flee when a very durable stone wall is at merely half health. Archers will miss an absurd two-thirds of the time, and catapults will also miss somewhat frequently, and ballistas will chose to exclusively fire at enemies that are directly behind a wall when it's projectiles can't go through such, despite other more distant enemies moving toward said wall that the ballista could hit. Units also won't flee or move quickly to get to rather distant fortified area until enemies are too close for units to have a chance to escape, nor cancel a tree removal. Units from a tower that is nowhere near the frontline can't be removed if you wanted to move them to an actually useful spot, nor can you change their tool, and so you have to carefully plan for what roles you need/want.
3) Island randomness can and will absolutely ruin any chance you have, by not having any statues to provide defensive buffs during blood moons, and instead picking 2 mounts that are genuinely worse than what you have. It will also frustrate you by also not having any build locations for a wall and tower to be right next to each other, or instead have such be much farther away than you can hope to fill, not be in a spot to protect a farm or the shipwreck, or instead have the tower in front of the wall, where your troops on such will get hit by the giant blobs.
4) No character customization to pick a ruler that's not an eyesore. There's not even a button to reroll such without starting a new game, which I have done over 20+ times on 2 instances, just to get a skin/garment color and gender combo that didn't look awful to me. The blazon/coat of arms customization is also a pain in the ass because you can't just change 1 thing for such to work, and you have to figure out the entire system to just to get something much more tolerable.
Overall, I feel like most of these issues could be fixed or heavily adjusted, but without such happening, it's definitely not worth your time or sanity.
I currently own every game in this series, I am just missing some of the DLC's. This game is very simple, yet so much fun. You will really enjoy it. I am glad that I bought it.
New Lands has has the same relaxing atmosphere, pretty pixel art, and strategic survival of other Kingdom titles. It has many more features than Classic, but (for obvious sequel reasons) fewer than Two Crowns. The main gameplay loop is a race against time, trying to defend your kingdom, unlock new discoveries, and build a boat to escape to the next island before winter sets in. Winter is permanent, so you will need to conserve resources and plan strategically to survive. When you get the strategy of it, it's really fun and satisfying. I would recommend it if you found Classic too easy.
A lot of reviews here are comparing New Lands to Two Crowns as if that's a bad thing, but I feel like it's a bit weird to expect devs to retroactively add sequel features to their older game. It is a very different game from Two Crowns, which has more casual gameplay and is not time-locked. The claims some reviews here are making that Two Crowns being a new game instead of DLC are developer malice is just silly. The games have very different goals and styles of play. If you enjoy difficulty, you will like New Lands. If you want a more casual experience, play Two Crowns. Or just play both!
Waste of time. Play Kingdom: Two Crowns instead. That game is vastly improved and addictive.
Problems with this game:
- Archers stop hunting and collecting coin after few days and just stop generating income. Have to rely solely on farmers at that point. The travelling wanderer with the donkey also disappears so no income from there either.
- After building the ship, a builder starts to slowly drag it to some corner of the map (I have no idea where he is dragging it to) before you can board it. This process can take a few in-game days to do. I waited long enough and stopped caring and quit the game after several minutes of waiting. This isn't an issue in Kingdom: Two Crowns where the ship moves by itself a short distance before you can summon your minions and board it.
- First island is empty af. Didn't proceed with other islands due to the above frustration.
I LOVE ALMOST EVERY DETAILS AND ABOUT MECHANIC THIS GAME EXECPT ONE I FEEL LIKE RIDING DONKEY BUFF THIS DONKEY TO HOURSE PLEASE
Maybe I don't get how it work, but it really felt like, a single mistake and 3 long hours of game are wasted. struggling to get some money back just to watch the npc sucide with it right away.
The game seems great and I want to play it, but everything in the gameplay is horrible and time wasting.
The game might be playable with a guide on a second screen at best.
Same Kingdom: Classic but with big (empty) map...
I can't play it, it's too difficult. I keep losing.
Play Kingdom: Two Crowns.
This one has a good concept, but lots of issues.
All NPCs move too slowly and have abysmal AI. It takes way too long to travel across your kingdom, with the NPCs reemerging as a problem when recruited beggars take 2 in game days to walk from their camp to the place where they can be given a job. This means that when your builders, which are essential to progression, get distracted by damaged walls as they are being attacked and get killed, it takes FOREVER for them to be ready to build again. A snowball effect ensues where less and less of your base gets repaired every night, and then you are overwhelmed and lose. Infuriating and NOT fun.
Two Crowns, as far as I've played it, solves all these issues and adds fun new stuff too, so if you got this game in a bundle with TC, don't even bother with this one.
Gave it a fair chance and tried playing it but as others have pointed out, the game is basically a waste of time. It's designed to just frustrate you and not give you a fair chance of advancing. The mechanics and whole gameplay are half-assed. On the plus side, the art and audio are nice so I give it 2/10 for those. Other than that, complete rubbish. Bought it for about 1 Euro and I still feel ripped off.
Boring, Boring and boring...... The worst sin of a game.... It looks like it could be fun but i recommend you stay away.
3/10
Not fun. Most of the time on the game is just trying to figure out how to play and make money. The biggest problem is that the player's characters are all idiots. They will go out past a gate before the next gate is built and all get killed. They will stay out on the farms and get killed. Ther eis nothing fun about Trying to keep a bunch of R tards from killing themselevs.
Meh.
I adore the concept, but it's too minimalist for its own good. There's left right, give coins, that's it!
My experience is surly from skill issue, which you'd expect from a new player.
But I have spent in games days (solid 10-15min) powerless without money, and therefore unable to do stuff.
I wish I could give a peasant a piggy back ride on the horse to get back to base instead of waiting on their slow walking.
I wish I could re-assign guards to go from one side to to the other. That the ones assigned at a tower would go back hunting during the day.
I wish I could, on long runs, hire more and more people and scale more. Toughen up walls more.
IDK but to me it felt like a slow powerless grind to victory. And I felt locked at some points.
Perhaps I expanded too fast, made too many guard towers and farmers. Maybe there's a learning curve and the game has a potential on re-runs. But for now I don't feel like it's worth my time.
However it looks pretty, it's really chill, the concept is awesome! And it looks like one unlocks stuff throughout the runs, there's definitely buildings, units, monuments I did not encounter in my run. Maybe further on there's the possibilities I'm looking for.
I'm not sure why all that content wasn't there to begin with. Given the little context or information the game gives I don't know how to build up to that, when I'l unlock stuff, and what the overall game plan is.
Definitely not worth the base price of 15€, however there's good sales where it can be worth it. Maybe just look-up a tutorial before your first play though and your experience will be better than mine :)
Thumbs slightly down, not a horrible game. I might give it another shot and change my mind.
Same gameplay loop as classic, a little bit more... stuff. If you've burned out on the first one, this probably isn't going to do anything for you, but I got my buck fifty's worth.
Amazing game. The art style is beautiful and the soundtrack is the best in the series. The feeling when the sun rises after a night and peaceful music starts to play is great.
Absolute boring game without much to do.
Just saw that the developer practically milks this game for money by releasing it over and over again while only changing the sprites.
Doesn't get more lackluster than that.
pretty aight in theory. GAY in practice...
I love this game, but there are a lot of weird AI quirks in hindsight. Buy Kingdom: Two Crowns instead!
Has a soft time limit, that's a no go for me.
Kingdom: New Lands is not as refined as Kingdom: Two Crowns but it is still a fun game to play on its own. It's only missing a few features from the later entries but what is present in the game is the addictive formula from every game that has you saying "just one more day". If you want to experience a more limited play style as well as a bit of a harder challenge and you already played everything in Two Crowns and every other game, then I recommend playing this entry so you can experience what the game was right before they fined tuned everything.
As I said, this game is still just as good and slightly more difficult, so its worth playing through it if you're a fan of the kingdom franchise. After all, there wouldn't be a Two Crowns if it wasn't for New Lands.
Brilliant game! Couldn't put it down until I maxed all islands and beat the Skull!
poop
It starts out fun, but after a couple games get ruined due to surprise game mechanics it's an instant uninstall.
YES
The map is too long. The game could be significantly improved by simply having the recruited run to camp instead of walking.
Kingdom: New Lands and the Kingdom series as a whole have been a quaint, terrifying, lighthearted, stressful, and overall enjoyable experience. It is by far one of the best purchases I have made and would recommend to anyone who enjoys RTS and side scrollers.
Honestly boring.
Not my thing.
This game is endearing. Great music, cute sprites, and a very basic premise. While it can be annoying the way the thieving monsters can cause a snowballing effect when paired when that admittedly dumb to the point of funny NPC's, you learn to plan around it. Some of the randomness can suck, but all in all an excellently well designed game to pass a slow day.
It's fun and simple enough to only use 3 keys on your keyboard, yet complex enough to keep you busy. The pixel art is beautiful and the music is pretty.
One of the best games I've ever played. Very relaxing and immersive. Buy this game.
I really enjoy this game for the most part but the winter being forever thing is really obnoxious and creates gamestates where you can have spent a LONG time on a playthrough and suddenly you're just out of money forever and there's nothing to do but wait around to die. Really would have preferred seasons that cycle through and repeat and maybe add difficulty by having winter last longer as you progress.
I love this game!!! :D
