I just beat Mugen Souls and Mugen Souls Z back-to-back and I can safely say the sequel is the better game. It is far less grindy and the game doesn’t feel like homework where you have to spend more time looking at charts than playing the game. For example, the Moe Kill system actually shows you what the effects of the three choices will be, usually. This drastically cuts down on time wasted. However, this doesn’t happen when you are trying to capture a planetary point, which is the most important time you use the captivate. Additionally, the crafting system is necessary to beat the game this time, but I really wish it wasn’t. You can’t beat the game without using it and you will have to look up recipes online, because the items won’t even show up in the shop. Then you will realize the item you need to make the item you actually need only drops from one creature, which only spawns in one track in the Mugen Zone, so you better have the tickets you need to open that, or you will be grinding for hours.
It took me only about 20 hours to get the True Ending, but I have no desire to grind for any of the other achievements, and I’m a completionist. Over a third of the people who start the game never finish the tutorial zone and more than half quit before they complete the first world. I think that tells you all you need to know.
I really don't want to bash this game into the ground, because it's not that bad of a game, quite fun actually... But man this is not worth purchasing in the state it is in. As depressing as this next set of words is going to be: you're better off buying the Switch version instead.
This game is great at its core, some very unique characters, unique mechanics through Moe Kills and Blast Off, a surprisingly in depth item system alongside post game bosses that are worth investing that much time in, and a nicely paced story albeit with its small flaws, mainly fanservice related... But I don't mind it as much anyway, since the rest is pretty fun.
I don't care at all about the censorship parts, and as a matter of fact, I'm much better off without those knowing what they are. What I'm very upset about is how poorly this game runs or rather, how much of a lottery it is to get it to run for more than an hour or two without any crashes whatsoever.
ANYTHING you do in this game has a risk of actually crashing:
- Going into a menu.
- Going into a fight.
- Triggering a Damage Carnival (which is done by reaching a certain threshold of damage in a battle).
- Using an item.
- Reviving a character.
- Random RNG Event giving you over 2 billion of one item, crashing the game in the process.
- Going into a new area.
- Creating a new Peon (strong custom characters you can create in game)
- Reading a Synopsis
- Looking at Profiles
- Setting new clothes for your characters
- Swapping characters
... and that's only a short list of what I had experienced as crashes in the game in my quest to actually do the Post Game content, which is about 57 hours of play.
Not only that, but since the game has absolutely no auto-save to pick back up right where it crashed, you can sometimes lose hours of work in the Mugen Field (a 100 Floor battle trial) just because a random event decided to crash the game!
And considering the amount of time you have to spend to be able to deal with most of the post game content, (I'm expecting the postgame to last me for about 150+ hours...) I cannot sanely recommend this game on Steam to anybody interested. Save yourself the money and trouble, or go get the Switch version instead... (Which is ABSOLUTELY INSANE to think about, a Switch game actually more stable than a PC version...)
Which is a shame, because this game should be worth a play otherwise. But man, this game REALLY needs a fix to be really enjoyable to play. Otherwise, you'll just be repeating the same tasks again and again just because this version wasn't debugged properly.
Pro's
Its Mugen Souls 2
Lots of clothing options
Overwhelming in all areas
Potentially countless hours of gameplay
Random events in Mugen Field
Lots of characters
Con's
GRINDFEST
Excessive cutscenes
Mugen Field bugs
Censorship
G-Castle battles still bad
Not aged well
DLC Tickets ruin the game once again
Obnoxious pay to bypass grind DLC
Too many different mechanics going on
Heavily recycled content
Incessant back tracking
Crafting required to progress story
Obnoxious challenge mode
Lacks critical information
Okay, so I originally had MSZ on PS3 and enjoyed the game back in ""2014"" and decided to replay in 2023 and honestly, that was a mistake because the rosy memories I had back then, and playing now are different and I can attribute that to age, the game just hasn't aged well at all and I'll explain further.
You have far too many types of grind going on, most notably the typical PEON grind which is still fairly obnoxious and will keep presenting you with hard brick walls forcing you to peon farm for basically hours in order to level up ChouChou different forms which is essential for progression, this grind is entirely forced and absolutely slows the pace of the game down to an entire crawl at times, especially at certain chapters and grinding for 3 - 5 hours in order to gain a few % in Ego/Ditz/Hyper etc becomes essential to unlock certain planet points otherwise you end up failing each and every time, generating frustration and boredom, not to mention that farming PEONS is also essential to level up G-Castle otherwise you can find yourself in very very difficult, or near impossible situations to progress.
Add in farming for multiple currencies to unlock more options, upgrade gear, unlock new classes which become equally grindy and really require high level Mugen Field trips and some lucky encounters, alternatively looking at specific guides, in fact often using a guide is the only way to avoid some of the frustration from unlocking some planet points because sure, it gives you some clues but never on what 'level' you need a particular % of the Ego to successfully charm it.
To once again, further add to the grindfest is that you'll run into many planet points that require a specific item to unlock, and in Mugen Souls Z.... its crafting + gold to buy from stores, example one planet point may want a parasol beam for instance, well you can't just outrightly buy it....so, get a guide online, look up what materials you need to craft it....find the specific monsters you need to drop the materials...and farm...until they drop, or attempt to steal with Nao or a "chaser" class, but once again - this isn't something that can be done quickly.
The story first time around is pretty good, I'll not lie - second time around, honestly? I'm literally skipping all the cutscenes, and story because it gets literally excessive, fight a few mobs and hit a story point...5 minutes of visual novel story...a few minutes of walking to the next story point for another 5 minutes of story, this becomes far too frequent and first time, its good....second time doing it, boring and definitely excessive, another gripe is that the game doesn't tell you enough details, such as that unlocking more Mugen field options is now done via challenges unlock the previous game, or that crafting is done by selling your materials to the store, or even how to activate things like fever mode - and breaking large crystals are still annoying as heck, honestly I just really wouldn't recommend MSZ to only the hardcore of JRPG fans who haven't played the original, which is honestly a better game overall.
Mugen Field is once again, the best way to level up - however, its not nearly as good as the original Mugen Souls game, a lot less ship battles for quick EXP for example, and mostly serves as your best method to farm PEONS by repeating the field day in, day out....day in, day out all the way up to level 9999 or until you get bored, whatever happens first - or if you are vested heavily enough to get the 'true ending'
Besides gamebreaking bugs which are notorious, especially with the mugen field, they also decided to add a challenge mode which is nessessary to unlock further mugen field exploration, and bear in mind here - this is almost ""mandatory"" and some of the challenges are absolutely disgustingly obnoxious, not because they are hard - nono, they require absolute precision especially the later challenges which require sheer perfection, such as activiting fever mode twice....its actually pretty difficult to activate it once, let alone twice and the challenges just get more frustrating and unfortunately, this is the best way to earn tickets outside of a rare event in Mugen Fields....or buying them for $3.99.
Overall, MSZ is a relic of the past and for people who have never played Mugen Souls or Mugen Souls Z before, I'd actually recommend the game but be heavily warned that this is fairly hardcore and comes from the era where grindfest level JRPGS were commonplace, the story first time around is great, many different characters each with their own quirks and plenty of customization options but this is a game that has extremely limited replayability, if any - I've beat this game fully nearly a decade ago and replaying it has definitely tarnished my good memories of it.
All the silly humor of the first game, but with quality of life improvements. Peon points are way easier to find and complete. The shampuru ball doesn't explode nearly as often. Plus the ticket system can really take the edge off the grind. But I don't think the story would make much sense if you don't play Mugen Souls first.
Get it on switch or go back to ps3... i hope the 3rd is coming someday and with no censorship!
Crashes way too often.
I set The message speed to slow and lowered the screen resolution and it hasn't crashed again yet.
After spending a lot of time (resources) and efforts creating (as it turned out) completely useless matter "Matter Efficacy Up" this game just broke my hart. Partly my fault for not researching/testing it better, but still it feels completely unfair.
Story is bad. The game is a grind for a grind sake. You will be better playing (replaying) any disgaea game.
waaaah, my cut softcore porn content! how will I ever enjoy this game without the H scenes!
Supremely charming game bogged down with a bad on-the-surface review score because people are thirsty.
edit:
Having played it more this is now one of my favourite JRPGs of all time, it's so good. Check out the Switch version if you absolutely need H scenes.
I had fun, but definitely not as good as the first game.
Unlike the previous game, I always felt like I was behind in both kill counts and Charm levels to clear planet points and advance the story. Made a lot of extra trips to the Mugen Field and was pretty overlevelled because of that.
Post-game grinding seems like a major pain as well. It looks like it is mechanically similar to the first game - Mugen Field, Fever Time, go ham launching enemies into the sky - except Fever Time is way more difficult to trigger and you don't get near as much Blast meter.
I did appreciate the map icons. That was sorely missing from the first game.
Story and characters were fine. In a lot of ways this was a retread of the first game with more characters. If you liked the first one, you'll probably enjoy this.
If you like the first one you'll like this one. It is a difficult game being that there is minimum info on the internet for this game, lots of it is buried or lost. That being said though, its a quality game, cheap too.
This game is fantastic, what can I say? This is my favorite game of all time. It gives you so many hours of fun grinding (not boring grinding). There's always something to do in the game. If you get burned out from grinding 100 floors for G, you can always play the challenge worlds or try and farm items for stronger gear. Either way, this game is fantastic. Remember, do not raise your level cap until you've grinded enough inside "Mugen Field" to get you OP gear. Once you raise the level cap, you miss out on epic bonuses and the dungeons will be harder. Don't raise that until you're ready to use "Peon Fusion" and you shouldn't use Peon Fusion unless your gear is beefed up.
Recommendation #1 if you're gonna play this game: Give it 3ish hours before you stop playing. This game takes a long freaking time to get going.
Recommendation #2: Be aware of all the DLC the game gives you for free. Some of these packs give items to you immediately that you wouldn't get until later on, and I found that it messed with my experience a good bit (you can disable whichever DLC you want in the menu)
With these recommendations in mind, this game is pretty freaking packed with content, not to mention the characters get pretty endearing after some time passes. If you're looking for a game with fast, overkill combat and a unique combat system to pair with it, then this game certainly does the job.
So, Chou-Chou managed to conquer the Seven Worlds. Then she got bored and decided to go and find more worlds to conquer in the universe. She has now discovered a group of twelve worlds. More hijinks await!
The characters are funny, there is some fourth-wall breaking, and the plot is amusing. Though whether or not your actions are truly evil… well, it depends on the world you are attacking, I guess. Though the turning enemies into peons is a bit… much…
Would recommend getting on discount as it can be a bit pricy. Especially if you get all the DLCs…
I really enjoyed the humor, and the effects are nice too. But most of all the ease of play has been increased manyfold.
-Moe Kills used to be a touch-and-go affair, but now you get a meter that predicts the amount of moe you will inflict, plus some percentile chances of an increased or decreased effect.
-Linked moves are now in your ability pool, so you can just use basic attack if you wish.
-The Mugen Field (AKA Level-Grind-Up-To-Overleveled-As-F**k) now has rest stops that you can heal up at and take a breather before continuing, or even get a free out if you feel over your head.
-Mini Chou-Chou
-Character models in general are greatly improved, and even move their mouths when talking.
-Same old dirty humor.
Overall I give this game an Undisputed God out of 10. Take that as you will.
A simple short review.
The things I like best about Mugens Souls Z is the vast amount of clothing options each providing different percentages of stat increases, while also contemplating which clothing would look good on your character while providing the stat needed for said character.
Minor con: Some of the features or mechanics are not properly explained or even mentioned, forcing the player to look up said information even if its a bit sparsed.
Still this game I would recommended it to others, otherwise become a peon for Lady Chou-Chou.
I'm quite upset that those who put this game on steam never said it was censored. I fucking hate censorship. Yes to this game, no to censorship. Read other negative reviews if you want more information on what was censored. Don't support censorship, please. Pass on this game. It's good, but if you care about censorship, then stay away. If not, then this is a pretty good game.
Our favorite Undisputed God of the Universe, Chou-Chou, returns with her crew for a brand-new story revolving around the zodiac. Taking place immediately after the first game, you take control of the goddess Syrma, who meets Chou-Chou before the end of the first game’s events. Syrma is out to stop an ancient threat to her world that has recently awakened. 9999 levels of maniacal mishaps and ethereal adventures await Syrma, her crew, and hordes of Shampurus!
Starting the game is something of a chore. It follows on directly from Mugen Souls, and the ruler of the universe, Lady Chou-Chou, is tired of the little piece of space that she spent her last adventure obtaining. She decides to take over twelve more planets, but her plan quickly unravels when she’s accidentally transformed into a powerless chibi version of herself. Yes, this is the actual plot. More surprising, it takes up to two hours to get to the basic gameplay. This Metal Gear-busting figure includes countless cutscenes, a few tutorials, and a music video, but it’s by no means the end of your learning experience. You’ll keep being introduced to new ideas for a long time.
This is funny, because the mechanics themselves are actually fairly simple to grasp. The battle system is standard, although still enjoyable, and most of it is controlled via self-explanatory menus. The vast tutorials are presented almost as a parody of other JRPGs, but as is so often with titles of this type, the developer falls into the trap of doing exactly what it's satirising. “Look at us,” the company screams, “forcing you to read this 15 page how-to on changing underwear – isn’t that so JRPG?” Yes, changing underwear.
If you like the first Mugen Souls you like Mugen Souls Z too its really fun and i think its also better then the first game.
As long as your soul isn't crushed by chou chou not being the main character, it's better then the origional in every way. I could nit pick a few things, most having to do with the new MC...and chou chou is in it still...a lot...but...
man i just want more chou chou.
If you liked mugen souls, get it. If you havn't played mugen souls...i think you would lose some of the comedy but still would be a great game.
1st of all, do research before buying this game, i just found out from the discussion that more than 120 CG and minigame got removed also a full Censorship, thought i don't really mind about the censor.
the story and gameplay just a standard JRPG, sometime when u wander around the background, grass and the wall are stretch out and look really bad.
I played on PS3. Interesting game, Disgaea combined with Hyperdimension Neptunia. Endless customization, funny characters and nice done characters art.
PC port are great, stable 60 fps (PS3 version runs 15-30 fps), high resolution support, and looks much better then PS3 version.
**Im supporting japanese games on steam**
Mugen Souls Z, like it's predecessor, combines the incredible/insane character development from Disgaea with a more straightforward combat system. Combat a bit like Neptunia or Fairy Fencer with a few added quirks like charm kills, buff/debuff giving crystals as well as ability to knock around characters.
Story wise it continues directly from Mugen Souls' true ending and the gameplay is essentially the same (with a few improvements).
Improvements from the first:
-Charming enemies is easier, while mood and stereotypes still matter the game will help predict results
-Can save at Rest Stops inside the Mugen Field
-The G-Castle has recieved improvements that would make Flonne proud. The fights are also less random and it's possible to skip them completely inside the Mugen Field (no more hitting a wall if G-Castle growth hasn't kept up with character growth)
-Various minor things that mostly speed up battles and grinding
Before trying this game I strongly recommend playing the prequel first though, they barely bother explaining the setting much less introduce old characters. If you don't enjoy the first you most likely won't enjoy this one either, the improvements aren't that major.
As for the censored content, I believe there is about two CGs per female character (as well as variations in the scrubbing minigame) that never made it to the western versions (The PS3 US version didn't have them either). While I'm against this kind of nannying it's not going to change my recommendation.
