Probably the best CAVE shmup on steam right now with a banger soundtrack, awesome gameplay and crazy bullet hell bosses a must play for shmup fans
To those that know the bullet hell sub-genre of shmups DoDonPachi needs no introduction. It is infamous for its curtains of death that it loves to cover the screen in. And the devs, Cave, hold an entry in the Guinness book of records as the single most prolific bullet hell developer of all time.
DoDonPachi Resurrection is perhaps one of the most accessible bullet shmups that Cave have ever produced. With plenty of alternate modes and training tools to hold you hand through a particularly unforgiving dance. Although hand-holding might be the wrong term. Training wheels might be a better description. This game doesn't do going easy. Even at the lowest difficulty, it will challenge you. It will demand your fullest attention and that you dedicate yourself to learning how it wants to dance. But that's where DoDonPachi is at its most fun.
When there's so many bullets on the screen that CPU struggles to keep up with it all and the frame rate comes crashing down. When you lose the position of your ship in the unending hail of death and when you manage to pull through unscathed in spite of the odds. Nothing beats that high.
And in Resurrection you can chase that high in a smorgasboard of modes. Ranging from an upscaled port of the arcade original that devoured the quarters of gamers in Japanese arcades back 2008 to a slew of crazy arrange modes that alter the power up and scoring systems and crank the difficulty to truly insane levels. And novice modes that tone down the madness on screen to a more approachable level.
Overal, not a great shmup with a decent PC port. It might be your first taste of bullet hell, or you might be a veteran of the genre. It'll have something to offer you.
Good shmup, wish DOJ got this kind of treatment on steam. Arcade accurate, lots of new modes (I like black label arrange a lot). I was worried it would be a waste of money considering it can just be emulated with MAME but all of the modes are worth it (on sale at least).
Disclaimer: My skill and experience in this genre is low.
Game: For some reason, the least intimidating Dodonpachi game. Tons of ways to play. Stark contrast to earlier games in the series graphically, but beautiful. Has the prettiest score items of any Cave game except maybe Espgaluda II. My skill at survival and scoring is too low to evaluate it on a real level, but I can say that it makes me want to get better. I like the Black Label soundtrack the best.
Port: The consensus is that this is a good port, in terms of input lag, slowdown, etc. I haven't played other versions, but I can say the input lag feels very acceptable. My only complaint is that the training mode could be a bit better (Maybe only missing the black label TLB? Unsure).
Hopefully someone can bring the rest of the Dodonpachi (and Donpachi) series to steam. Especially the other CV1000 entry SDOJ...

I like DOJ more but this game has much better graphics and a ton of modes to play and experiment with. Its definitely worth the price and youll have plenty to do.

Played this a ton on the Saturn hardware, and MAME.
Great iteration. Some slowdown here and there but given the hectic bullet hell, I expect that to be by design - and it actually helps to stay alive longer.
You see my time played as of review. I'm not convinced this is worth the asking price, but that is a minority opinion among people who have played more and understand more.
Maybe there is more than just a re-look of an old shooter here. But I won't hold my own perception of there being little content here against the game. Clearly, this package is worth money. But, maybe a different amount.

So, you just gotta find you way to play games, sometimes, to get something out of them. In this case, I enjoy Ketsuipatchi (Black Label Arrange), and I enjoy playing 1.5 with the Shot type but WITHOUT using hypers, because I enjoy the Bomb ship speed and just having a faster experience, pew-pewing a bit here and there. On the other hand if I want to go crazy on filling the screen with ridiculous amounts of bullets and cancelling everything, I just turn to Arrange A and go crazy with the hyper game.

incredible combo of ddp games the black label arrange mode is fun for ketsui fans and the local leaderboards and replay are terrific features. long live toaplan!
seriously the best game ever. been playing this one since it came out in the arcade 2008ish.
