Advance Wars Meets Tanya the Evil: Tactical Turmoil, Explosions, and a Lot of Waiting
[hr]
Scene: The dimly lit room. The group is gathered around the gaming console, their faces a mixture of confusion and disbelief. The screen flashes Future Wars, a tactical game that promises action, but so far only delivers the emotional equivalent of watching a snail race. They’re all stuck, waiting for the game to actually do something. The tension in the room is so thick you could cut it with a dull knife.
Andy (beaming like he’s just uncovered the secret to eternal life, practically vibrating with excitement): This is it! I feel it in my bones! This move is going to be a game-changer—the ultimate strategic masterpiece! You’ll all be shocked!
Max (leaning back, rolling his eyes dramatically like he's watching paint dry, voice dripping with sarcasm): Game-changer? More like sleep-changer. Right now, I’m one turn away from entering the world’s most boring nap contest. Wake me up when something happens, Andy. Please.
Rachel (eyes glued to the screen, voice thick with sarcasm): Oh, I’m riveted. So much tension! I can hardly contain my excitement! Should we take a poll on how long it takes before we start dreaming about this game? ‘Cause that’s probably the only thing happening here.
Sami (looking like she’s on the edge of breaking, her voice icy but laced with too much sarcasm): This is the worst strategy game I’ve ever played. Where’s the action? Where’s the conflict? At this point, I’d rather be trapped in a room with a motivational speaker. At least they’d say something interesting.
Nell (staring blankly at the screen, clearly at her wit’s end, with a deadpan voice): This is torture. Pure, unadulterated torture. It’s like waiting for a cactus to give you a hug. It’s painfully slow.
Kanbei (standing tall, like a proud general who’s just been told his entire army is on strike, his voice thunderous): This is an insult to the very concept of warfare! I have led men into battle! I have seen the glory of combat, and now I’m watching this... this travesty of a game. Where are the warriors? Where is the fire?
Olaf (grumbling like a storm that’s been caught in traffic, shaking his head with disbelief): Where’s the blizzard? Where’s the cold fury of nature? This is a snowstorm without snow. A blizzard with no wind. I am disappointed.
Jess (glancing over at Olaf, her grin knowing and wicked): Oh, Olaf, I think you’d actually enjoy a snowstorm right about now. At least the snowflakes move. This game’s like waiting for the sky to fall—and it never will. Utterly hopeless.
Grimm (leaning forward, looking like he’s about to explode, his voice booming with fiery passion): Where are the explosions? Where are the guns? The missiles? The tank battles? I need chaos! I need destruction! I’ve seen more exciting things in a chess game, and I don’t even like chess!
Tanya (sitting back, her usual confidence turned into ruthless mockery, her voice dripping with superiority): Explosions? Sweetheart, this game couldn’t even explode a balloon at a children’s party. If this was a war, we’d all be dead from sheer boredom before we even saw a single shot fired.
Visha (staring at the screen like it’s personally offended her, her voice dripping with frustration): Where is the urgency? Where’s the danger? This game is a cruel joke. It’s like standing in the middle of a field waiting for a wildfire, and all you get is dry grass. No spark. No fire.
Eagle (sighing with the solemnity of someone who’s just realized he’s wasted his life on this, voice filled with regret): I’ve commanded real armies, fought real battles, and this? This is like playing Monopoly with no money—there’s no action, no strategy. I’ve seen more tension in a pillow fight!
Drake (leaning back in his chair, voice as dry as the Sahara Desert): You know, I’ve stared down more exciting sand dunes than this. This game is like a sandstorm that never hits. A desert without any of the fun. We’re just waiting... and waiting... and waiting for something to change. Spoiler: It won’t.
Hawke (gripping the edge of the table, his knuckles turning white, voice strained as if trying to summon some form of excitement): I’ve been in real combat. This is like a battlefield where nothing happens! I’m waiting for something—anything! The tension in my fingers is more intense than what’s happening on screen!
Lash (smirking, practically gleaming with her usual sarcasm): You know, I thought I was playing a strategy game. Instead, I think I’m participating in a contest for who can stay awake the longest. Where’s the excitement? Where’s the action? Oh wait, there’s none. I guess I won already.
Sensei (his voice calm, though his disapproval is clear, as if delivering a fatal blow to the game itself): This is not strategy. This is an exercise in patience. There is no subtlety, no brilliance—it’s as empty as a jar without a lid. A true strategist would never subject themselves to this... travesty.
Colin (rubbing his temples, clearly on the verge of a mental breakdown, his voice dripping with disbelief): How is this a game? You move pieces around like a toddler playing with toy soldiers. It’s like a bad dream where you can’t wake up. Why is there no challenge? Where’s the fun?
Grimm (grinning wildly, as though on the verge of losing his mind): You know what? Fine. Fine. I’m gonna embrace the chaos. I’ve got it. I’m going to turn this into my own personal warzone. I’ll blow something up if it’s the last thing I do! This game’s about to feel the wrath of Grimm!
Max (raising an eyebrow, giving Grimm a look as if he’s heard this speech a hundred times before): Yeah, sure, Grimm. Just like you “embraced the chaos” last time by... getting stuck in traffic and yelling at pedestrians. Great idea. Let me know how that works out for you.
Andy (eyes wide, still holding onto his dwindling optimism): No, no! You don’t understand! I have the ultimate move coming up. Just trust me! You’ll see! This is going to be... big! Huge! Massive! We’re talking world-changing strategy here!
Kanbei (deadpan, his voice heavy with the weight of a thousand disappointments): Andy, my warrior’s spirit is crushed. This is no strategy. This is a test of endurance. Can we survive the waiting game? The answer... is no.
Olaf (pounding the table in frustration): I don’t care about your master plan, Andy. This isn’t strategy; this is torture. The game isn’t even moving. It’s like a glacier that’s stuck in time. No snow. No wind. Just... waiting.
Jess (mocking, clearly unbothered): I think we’re all winners here. I mean, we’ve been waiting for ages, and we’ve only made it this far without losing our minds. How’s that for a game of survival?
Grimm (voice filled with mock grandeur, as if giving a speech to an invisible army): I’ve endured many trials, faced countless foes—and this? This is a trial of patience, of pure willpower. But I WILL make it to the end... even if it means dragging this game through the finish line myself!
Max (sighing in dramatic defeat): Alright, alright. Let’s just wrap this up. I can’t take another turn of this nothingness. At this point, I’d rather get stuck in traffic with Olaf’s snowstorm than wait any longer.
Andy (bright-eyed, undeterred by the collective defeat around him): Okay, okay, this is the big one. I feel it! This move will turn everything around! You’ll see, you’ll all see! It’s going to be—wait for it—EPIC!
Everyone else (in perfect unison, with dramatic flair): NOPE.
I find this game ok. Maybe the AI is not great, but then it feels like a casual game, which is nice IMO.
One thing is that the explosions, sfx and music are quite good for a low-budget game.
Future Wars feels like an advanced war style game. You can see the similarities right from the beginning. However Future wars falls short with the lack of proper UI design and really bad story. During combat the UI makes it tough to understand what sorts of tactic a player should use to take victory and the first few missions of the campaign hardly explain what there is to expect in the game.
There also seems to be a disconnect with the game play itself feeling like it's made for an adult audience but the story is filled with childish humor. There is no focus on any particular audience and it seems to have short wide and missed every target.
Pros:
-Simple game play
-Low cost
Cons:
- Bad UI and UX
- Mix of Adult game play with childish humor
- Slow game play with waiting for animations between actions
- no quick actions (cant just select what you want to attack, has to move then select attack)
TLDR: a game with UI, Story, and target audience issues. Not worth the money, should have been a game on itch.IO
This feels like a weaker version of either Advance Wars GBA series, or the flash game series Battalion . Both of them felt like there's higher stakes than what appears to be some students/teachers being upset about someone having a winning streak (as opposed to trying to help the other recruits catch up).
Also, the expensive units seem to be the ones pushing for victory, outside the tactic of a unit drop on the enemy HQ.
I mean, it's not exactly a groundbreaking AAA game, but it still works in 2021 on Windows 10. It doesn't innovate on the genre, doesn't try to one-up Advance Wars (quite the contrary as it bows down to AW as the inferior clone), but it still provides that tactical gameplay I crave. I just wish the AI is a little smarter and the story longer.
Even without a discount, the price is reasonable for the hours I've sunk into it. Buy it at a discount if you don't feel the same, but buy it anyway.
I honestly don't get all the bad reviews. I genuinely enjoyed this game. Played it through a couple of times. Didn't notice any bugs, gameplay was solid, and presentation, although not high budget stuff, was well done. Would certainly recommend it.
This is a bit of a mercy thumbs up. Is the game great? No. But it is stable and playable. I alt tab a lot and didn't have any crashes and thus far it's not crashed and at the time of this posting I'm 1/3rd through it. You do have to run it in Xp SP3 or Win 7 mode. I did XP SP3.
Apparently there's multiple player but you won't find anyone to play with and I can't really comment on that. The single player thus far follows a student learning to be a commander in kind of a starfleet environment. For some reason you attach yourself to a mutant ugly kid and have awkward high school adventurers in the cut scenes. It's a pretty bland storyline but the campaign is supposedly just getting you ready for multiple player action. Since it's a bit of a simulated battle it feels like there aren't any real things at risk as you're just fighting other students or the teacher in mock battles.
The game play is too slow, the early maps are the right size even though they feel small. The problem is the units just don't move very fast and you can't do any waypoints or stacking of units that would speed it up. But, if you can have a bit of patience with that the gameplay is a bit fun. Different units are better in different uses and terrain plays a big role. I haven't figured everything out yet but after a while you get to learn what unit combinations work for fighting enemy tanks, artillery, and weaker units.
I'd really like to have a good Advance Wars clone available on Steam, but this isn't it. The clunky, ugly 3D graphics are a huge step back compared to the clear and functional 2D graphics of the original, and it's far less intuitive to grasp the relative strengths and weaknesses of the units because they're not called "infantry" or "tanks" or the like. In short, it's an incompetent clone of a great game.
Very, Very disappointing. I was told before release that this game was made by the same guys that had created one of the all time best turn based strategy games ever in "Advanced wars" which was made for nintendo gameboy advance.
What we received was a beat down, generic, shallow game. Lacking any polish or interest, even from the very first tutorial stage you will realize how far backwards a game of such legend can come.
Graphics are stale, units are extremely limited and generic. Whilst it "may" keep some people entertained for a short period, i surely doubt it.
Do not buy.
Seriously, if the devs of this game put in some effort and released a modernised version of advanced wars, they would make millions. From the quirky commanders with special abilities to air and naval battles. The game was fantastic for the era. Please consider putting some effort into any future games.
*Note* I got this on a coupon
This game when I first loaded it made my computer crash and have multiple errors afterwards. After that occurred, I did not hesitate to uninstall the game.
- 2 months later -
I had decided to reinstall the game. This time it actually didn't crash my computer! However, the AI had no idea what it was doing and made this game seem very unfinished to me. I never played again. Maybe some day the game will be blessed and be better, because this game has potential. Who knows when that day will come?
Overall Rating : 4/10
Recommendation : No
Reason: Has potential, but seems very unfinished
It is not a good sign when the most recent news in more then half a year is an article link to a review of a game that is in a difference catagory, different country and even different decade that just happens to have the same name. No one proof read that first?
I was hoping for a decent Advanced Wars knock off but this game is sub par even with that expectation. The story is cringe worthy and I lost interest after the first few missions. Unless you are desperate for a title of this type then you should avoid it...or maybe go look at that other game in the new article.
What and absolute piece of crap, its so bad it would be hilarious if it werent for the 70 cents i wasted buying this abomination.
After seeing all the negative reviews i though, come on, it cant be THAT bad, well, i was wrong.
Seriously dont buy it, go and emulate advance wars instead.
Holy crap...
I love turn-based strategy, but this game is absolutely terrrible. The interface is abysmal (all clicking...only one hotkey). I thought for sure that this game would be good or at least passable, but omfg I was wrong. Honestly, I bought it for a buck, and I still wish I could return it, just so the devs don't get their cut for a game like this.
I read the reviews and thought I would give it a chance...don't make the same mistake I did.
This game seemed to be interesting, but sadly failed on so many levels. Having been compared to Advance Wars, I was expecting a lot more out of the game than it gave me.
The plot was uninspiring, the characters at least as much. The art, animations and unit design also leads much to be desired. Complemented with bugs, and a lack of other Advance Wars features mean that even Hot Seat and Editing fail to make this enjoyable and engaging.
Much regret on my part for buying this game...
This game is not great but not bad either. If you're looking for some turn-based strategy gaming similar to the Advance Wars series, but for your PC, then this is worth your time. There are big similarities but also some differences in the game rules compared to Advance Wars.
To those who know Advance Wars, I list some differences:
There are no naval units
Only helicopters and air transports as air units, there are no bombers or fighters.
All units are produced in factories, there are no airports. All units can heal in cities or factories, in contrast to Advance Wars, where air units only heal while on airports.
If a unit inside any kind of transport has boarded the transport in a previous turn (not the current turn), then after unloading it CAN MOVE AND ATTACK, I love that detail!
Healing does not cost a corresponding fraction of the unit worth's money, like in Advance Wars.
Downsides of this game:
AI is weak
The Campaign is only 16 missions short (and the story is as bad and cheesy as Advance Wars, but also, luckily, irrelevant to the actual gameplay). There are about the same number of additional missions in "Free Play" mode, and the campaign missions can also be played in Free Play mode (selectable side for AI and player, multiplayer options,...)
The Interface is a bit clunky, not as elegant and informative as Advance Wars. But it does the job and doesn't stand in the way.
With some more polish and missions, this would be a great title on PC. As it is, it's only "ok", worth playing if you like Advance Wars and ready to try a similar game on PC. I enjoyed it but probably I won't replay it.
I have not tried out any of the multiplayer options.
I got this game for 99 cents as a curiosity, but was very dissapointed. I'd say the biggest problem I have with the game is that it is customized for slower computers so I can't play it on my computer. Every turn feels like I'm draggng my feet through a hurricane that's pushing me backward slowing my pace to a crawl. As far as the gameplay goes, overall its not really too bad, but it is just a mediocre rts game that may have had a lot of potential if it had better game mechanics. My recomendation is not to buy this game, If its 99 cents and your curious and have some money to waste check it out, as its not atrocious just sub par and plauged by that awful issue that the game seems to move as slow as humanly possible.
In the Future there is a War where robots knock out all the lights, leaving only lame electronic music to guide the way.
An interesting concept where the player must hold Alt and press Tab as he frantically tries to escape the blinding robots of the future, but there is no escape!
I was quickly confronted with the boss robot who had me holding down my power button in order to escape him.
A fascinating game that shows off a unique control scheme.

If you are REALY want something that is exactly like like Advance Wars you may not be fully disappointed, because this game is exactly like that only (slightly) worse in every respect. The AI is shit, the story and drawings smell of cheap, the tutorial is misleading, the unit design makes no sense, the UI is ugly and unresponsive with occasional glitches, shitty options menu, there are no fight or capture animations, no unit merging, I could go on and on. I myself only bought this because I got a 75% coupon and I still kind of regret the 1,25 EUR I spent on it. It has hotseat mode which is really the only positive thing I can say about it.
Bottom line:
Avoid it. Even if you are desperate for some AW-style hotseat combat don't pay more then 1.5 bucks...
A pile of shit. If you bought this cause you were longing for some Advance Wars like gameplay, TOO FUCKING BAD. This steaming pile of dogshit fails in every single aspect and my god the AI is awful.
0/10, regretting my purchase.
You decided out of good reasons not to have a one-session online multiplayer mode. As in more complex maps, turns can take up to an hour, it just does not make sense to us. a Dev said,
This is one of the dumbest things I've ever seen. If we want to spend a couple hours in a game why not let us. I know it may not be for everyone but the option should still be there. Especially since the game claims to have online multiplayer. This is borderline false advertising. As even if you are passing your save back and forth you are still only playing single player. No real time play or competitiveness. And you have to use outside software. This ruins the game. The ignorance of the developers to assume this would be enough is just that, ignorant.
Imagine Advance Wars. Imagine Advance Wars with tedious controls and shitty story and a fraction of the depth. You are now imagining Future Wars.
Not even once.
