Liar, liar, pants on pyre
Fine art and presentation and there's a semblance of interesting world building and story but... the gameplay itself is just not that interesting or entertaining to engage in.
What a shame.
So there I was, thinking I'd seen everything in gaming, like that smug git who's been to every restaurant in Stockholm. Then Pyre comes along and slaps me right in the face with its brilliance. Proper caught me off guard, it did.
Here's what you're getting yourself into: Think of it as if Shakespeare decided to write about a magical sports league, but then got really into fantasy novels halfway through. The story's deeper than my existential crisis after realizing I'm not the prettiest person in the room anymore, and trust me, that's saying something.
The characters? They're like that weird family reunion where everyone's got issues, but you can't help but love them anyway. Well, most of them. Some are like that uncle who keeps telling the same joke at Christmas – you want to hate them, but they're part of the package, aren't they?
Now, let's talk about the music. Darren Korb's done it again, hasn't he? The soundtrack's so good, it makes me want to throw away my entire Coldplay collection, and I'm not even joking. The art style? It's like someone took all the pretty bits from a Renaissance painting, fed them LSD, and created something that'd make Van Gogh go, "Bit much, innit?"
The actual game bit – these "Rites" they call them – is like playing cosmic basketball while having an existential crisis. Four minutes of pure chaos that'll have you screaming at your telly like it's the World Cup final.
Here's the thing though: If you're not into reading, this might not be your cup of tea. It's got more text than my divorce papers. And while the actual sporty bits are brilliant, they're shorter than Tyrion Lannister in a limbo competition. Could've done with a bit more of that, if I'm honest.
The only real gripe I've got – and it's about as significant as a paper cut in a shark attack – is that Supergiant Games should've been upfront about this being basically a fancy book with some cosmic sports thrown in. Some fans of their previous games might feel like they've ordered a steak and got served a vegetarian lasagna. Still bloody good, just... different.
On the whole, Pyre is like discovering your gran's been secretly running an underground fight club - completely unexpected, slightly confusing at first, but ultimately amazing. It might not be conventional, but neither was Einstein, and he turned out alright, didn't he? Well, apart from the hair.
Beautiful graphics. I cant get myself to care about any character nearly 3 hours in. Not into the minigame.

The first three hours of this game are for you to go "eh I don't know if I can take magical purgatory basketball seriously" and the rest of the game is for you to be sooooo invested that it makes you look like a f*cking idiot
ok listen. The Hades series might be my one big love from supergiant but man... Pyre is just such a special game. Itσ premise is a little ridiculous written down but it is so, so very sincere and heartfelt about it you can just feel passion ooze from every single crevice. I honestly wish the campaign was longer because I did not want it to end, I didn't want to let the characters go as the story progressed and I've learned all their quirks and backstories, all that makes them feel so charming in this peculiar and cruel wasteland they've been banished to. The same goes for your rival exiles. I dare not call them villians, this game rightfully does not bother in painting in black and whites (even for what could be considered the most openly antagonistic character in the game, something something spoilers), everyone is victim of an unjust system
unfortunately for the colorful cast of enemy teams, only my special little guys shall go to the commonwealth. I don't know what the hell they put into "Never to return" that elicits such a visceral reaction out of me but ough it's so affective. The bittersweet goodbye as you sent another one of the nightwings on their way. The...Everything
Anyway, enough yapping, if you are even seeing this go play this 7 year old ahh game already, it's a masterpiece
TL;DR: Its not what I expected but its good.
I walked in blind because I just saw it was Supergiant Games, and I've enjoyed every game of theirs so far. I saw it being described as an RPG, so I was expected something like a CRPG.
It is not a CRPG, I don't think its really an RPG at all. Its more like a sports game? You have a squad of (eventually) 8 characters, each with unique behaviours. They only carry 1 item and can only level up 4 times, giving them 4 passive abilities (of possible 8 options). Then you pick 3 to form a team that will play against another team of 3, with the goal of putting a ball in the other teams goal while defending from them doing the same. You got passing, sprinting, jumping, interception, tackling and shooting - all just with a magic twist.
Like all Supergiant games, the dialogue is weird and the art is beautiful but the gameplay is very tight. Also as usual they have modifiers available to increase the challenge.

great game, gives some sport vibes but the balance of it is very strong, the game is very fun and the narrative storybook-esc story moments are fantastic
Space Jam
Pyre is a highly memorable visual novel, team based RPG, basketball game with a gorgeous art style and soundtrack to accompany it. When I type "basketball", I don't mean NBA basketball, I mean a modern version of the 1996 PlayStation 1 game Space Jam type of basketball.
With a tun of lore and the positives above, Pyre can be very very deep.
Premise
Literacy is banned. You play as a scholar exiled to the wilderness below civilization and left to die. You're saved and recruited by a sentient dog, a human and a demon to become their Reader aka a guide. You're to read a book and follow it's text, using the information within you're to understand secret rituals and guide your group via following the stars which lead to an ancient style of basketball matches.
If your crew can win enough, they/you will have earned freedom leading back to civilization.
Gameplay
I'd estimate around 65% of Pyre is a visual novel with the other 35% being a basketball styled game. Control wise the visual novel part is well it's a visual novel so you read then hit spacebar. The basketball section is super straight forward and depending on the difficultly selected shouldn't pose any issue to most people.
Vibe
A strange - and perhaps contradictory - mix of melancholy, hope and redemption throughout.
Last Thoughts
Looking back over what I've typed, I can't help but think "aren't I supposed to be typing good stuff about Pyre since I've ticked "yes" I'd recommend", Pyre is strange like that. No matter what I can think of typing and explaining/describing, the game sounds awful but lets be clear, there was absolutely no chance I was gonna stop playing and not find out how everything was going to play out. The story telling is genuinely really good. The plot, art style, music and lore combined really goes all out telling a fantastic and compelling tale.
Ultimately what Pyre does differently story wise and is arguably it's best selling point; Pyre tells an interesting story well by focusing on good characters and each of their interwoven connections to everything and everywhere rather than the central driving plot device > in this case a weird basketball styled game.
Pyre - one of the games that I can't conquere myself, mostly because I have a little attention span and my brain is kinda wonky. But it's my problem, though, someday I'll surely beat it, and oh boy this game have something to show for you!
It's a fun expirience in terms of gameplay - it's unique, surely something that you're not expect usually, - but I'm the one who's here for the story. For the lore. And for the art that this game gives.
Lore is not small, and at the same time not that big, but it feels like there is a ton of stories, secrets, and characters! It feels... Somewhat real. As real as it can possibly be in terms of story, of course. And my advise will be that - you need to expirience it for yourself, it's worth it, fully worth it.
Art is just... Another story. It's in need for it's own award, including soundtrack! My gratitudes to Darren Korb, from game to game he's still amazes me with OST that I'll be listening outside the game itself for sure! Art-design perfectly fits the story, it fits in the world that is shown to us, all the colors, all the characters and locations... I can talk about it for hours, really, no words can descrive how I love this game, honestly.
Pyre was the first game from all of the Supergiant Games projects that I've met back in the day, and I'm still hangin' in there. It's sad that there will not be something of a continuation of this game, but at the same time... It's good. This story is self-sufficent enough, it doesn't need an unwanted sequel, and I'm happy with what we have.
Narrative/suicide basketball is surprisingly fun and recommended. Give it a shot, it's got some tricks up its sleeve. I only wish the vs mode was available online.

one of the few stories that actually changed my perception of life, loss and the ability to move on and create from the ashes. the rites gameplay is still weird af but the story is worth every second, it made me cry several times, it stirred feelings again in me replaying it after so many years.
this is art, videogames can be art, developers care for their craft and pour all their love into them <3
I mean, it's Supergiant. Of course it's amazing. 10/10 art, music, & story. Gameplay is... different. Feels a bit odd. But it works. 8/10
Not worth it.
A really unique gameplay combination, and one that randomly pops into my head on occasion as I remember how good it is. Hades might be the best Supergiant game, but this is very close behind (and to me more of a 1A vs 1B ranking than a 1 vs 2 ranking).
this is a superb fantasy sports game with enough depth and replayability to keep you wanting more once it's done. the core gameplay is easy to pick up, but picks up complexity as you get more types of characters to use and more items to equip. its an odd mix of genres as you go from sports/action gameplay to point-&-click adventure/visual novel hybrid in the next gameplay segment. the art is also a highlight of the game overall, as it's not the best supergiant game by any means, even out of their three pre-hades games (in fact, i'd say this might be the weakest supergiant project out of all of them) but if you're generally a fan of their games i HIGHLY recommend this.
as for flaws, i could see the game being a bit too simplistic even for non-completionists, leading to the game becoming repetitive after 10-15 hours which is about how long a casual playthrough would take i would imagine. even though i believe this is the weakest entry from supergiant games, i would say this is STILL a 7/10 or so, maybe a 6/10 at worst if you're put off entirely by everything this game has to offer. there is a LITTLE to be desired in the way of story as i craved more lore and character development, and some characters are only present for a small portion of the game which was unfortunate as well.
My least favorite Supergiant Games, but STILL a Supergiant games... Like this is something between Bastion and Hades and the vibes are immaculate. I love the arstyle, the story, the soundtrack... sadly the gameplay gets repetitive quick so I didn't want to play it again, even though there is some here. Anyway, a great game regardless :)
Pyre is a beautiful game with an amazing soundtrack. The setting and storytelling are —as with all Supergiant games— excellent. But, the game did outstay its welcome a bit, for me. The rites didn't excite me enough for a 13 hour campaign. For me, an 8 hour campaign would have been much better. I am still glad I finished the game though, as the ending was good and left me satisfied.

Quite a unique game, with a compelling set of characters you instantly fall for.
You can probably beat it in one sitting, but it certainly deserves several visits down the line.

A story of redemption and hope. The soundtrack is *killer*. It would be an understatement to say its the game that had the most impact on me. I have cried every time I hear the end credits. One play through is about 7 hrs, give it a shot. Love this thing

3-on-3 street basketball.
basically a basketball minigame attached to a visual novel with really awkward pacing. stops every 20 seconds so you can make the decision to click on either the single thing you can click on, or one of up to 3 "sidequests" that are just different conversations. i don't get how this can have the "story-rich" and "choices matter" tags when you cannot make any choices and the story is on complete rails the entire time.

This is a fantastic game and its one of the most beautiful way to write lore for a made up universe. The art style is amazing and in character with the other SuperGiant games the music is glorious.
I just wish the game wasn't so damn repetitive. You basically go through a season of this sport and you have to do it every time per character, albeit after the first one the seasons end up being under half in length, that's still about 7 or 8 times you "re-do" the game. Yes, there are differences and things that change, but it still feels like playing the same game over and over and over nonstop with increasing difficulty just for the "good ending".
Pyre is a Golden example of a Beautiful Narrative driven game with interesting gameplay where the outcome of your battles alters the story and the events that unfold.
I dont think I have ever seen someone create a unique sports game where the sole focus is the story instead of the core mechanics. Not to say that the gameplay is not developed, but I would say that playing the sport is more of a second thought than the meat of the whole experience, which is the narrative. The game plays kind of like basketball but instead of characters moving on their own, you can only move one at a time and they all have different abilities that allow you to move across the field and take out your opponents, as well as strengths and weaknesses. You can also buy things that your team member can equip to boost their stats and aid them. Your members also Level up independently and when you level up you get to unlock different abilities for each of them that further aid you in your conquest.
Typically in these types of games, you are encouraged, if not sometimes required to win every single match to progress. However in Pyre, you can win or lose matches and the story will continue with your members giving different comments depending on the outcomes that have unfolded. I honestly enjoyed so much how every character interacted with one another. Some don't like each other as much but end up warming up with one another, others give out comments on certain teams that you fight against and then everyone always talks about the end goal that they all have and their purpose. There is so much dialogue and just so many different conversations that can happen between them or even between the teams you fight that I never ran into a single repeated line. Even other characters that you meet that are not part of the sport make comments about certain aspects of the events that are occurring while you play. This game has so many different dialogues that you will not see everything in just one playthrough.
The games art is also so beautiful, SuperGiant Never seems to fail at creating breathtaking games with their beautifully drawn Backgrounds and positioning of things where you can see the different layers on the screen. The character designs are also so amazing and incredibly detailed with all of them very clearly standing out from one another. The music as well just like all of their other games is so good with certain people having their own themes and even the music dynamically changing while you play against certain opponents.
This game is such a work of art that you have to experience it for yourself. Some people say that it gets repetitive because of the gameplay and as much as I want to agree with those people, you have to keep in mind that the design of this game is mimicking that of a sports game. You don't change a sports rule in the middle of a game, its supposed to be consistent, plus there are these constellations that you can invoke before a match where it makes the game harder giving the enemy team an advantage. If you turn these on and constantly change your team members, you get a lot of variety from each match while keeping things fresh.
Buy this if you want a game that is very story focused which unique characters and interactions.
played years ago but still lives rent free in my mind. character design is awesome, story is interesting and kept me engaged. the audio is probably the main thing that had me coming back for more, the voice actors are amazing. Supergiant you guys did great with this game. i really enjoyed your work on this. from visuals to audio everything had me engaged and really enjoying the game. i would love if a game similar to this came along, without the sports aspect to it. really one of a kind game.

Honestly, I didn't expect to like this game, given that it was mostly a point-and-click. I bought it exclusively because it was made by Supergiant Games. The soccer mini-game sections were cool, and the story made it interesting, though not enough to warrant a second or third playthrough to find out different endings or side stories.
Bought this game a while back, and just recently played it. This was special, its narrative was excellent, the world-building is not matched by many even by today's game releases.
It would be awesome if Supergiant would come back and revisit this universe.
Definitely time well-spent and even on its short run-time is packed with quality.

Weirdest sports game I’ve ever played.
OVERALL - Good game. Would recommend to anyone who liked Supergiant’s previous games or anyone looking for a good story and a unique “battle” system
STORY - 4/5
I thought the game did a good job making me care about the characters right away. There is an expansive world with a lot of supplemental text, but it isn’t truly necessary to read. I thought the choice to partially voice the character was actually a really nice touch. Then ending was pretty good, although maybe a bit underwhelming. Currently I have only seen 1 ending.
GRAPHICS/ART - 3/5
I enjoyed the character designs. I thought they had a good variety, but they seemed to go together well. The landscape/world map was unique. It almost felt a bit abstract. Almost more like a painting than a map. But you could still get around just fine.
I kind of wish they had a few more unique models during the combat, but I guess that would actually go against the theme/rules of the rites. There were some slow downs and choppiness during the combat. Was a bit unclear if it was intentional or graphical.
COMBAT - 4/5
The combat/rites were very unique. Overall the system felt more like a sports game playing a team season rather than any sort of traditional RPG. Honestly one of the games that kind of comes to mind in terms of how it plays was NBA Jam or maybe Mario Soccer. The progression seemed impactful and the choices of masteries seemed like real decisions on how you played and wanted to use each character. Most of the talismans seemed interesting and useful too. Although I felt there might have been a few too many involving how much damage you do to the pyre.
OUTSIDE COMBAT(World Map) - 3/5
Overall the early part of traveling was enjoyable. I liked the fork in the road system and how it was presented. I kind of wish there was maybe some sort of mini game that helped determine the extent of the reward/bonuses you got during those parts. After flying became available it was very fun to soar around the map, but after the 2nd liberation rite, I kind of wished the travel between stars was faster.
UI- 4/5
Overall the UI was pretty good. I used the controller most of the time. I really liked how the dialogue was done. The red hover text that gave you a small description of any word that you might question was very helpful.

This game is beautiful! The best description I can give is that its like fantasy NBA Jam but with one of the best stories I've ever played! The world-building and characters are brilliant, and the gameplay is innovative and fun. This is Supergiant in peak form! I love this game! Can't wait to come back to it in like a year and re-experience this masterpiece.
Edit: Do yourself a favor, and keep the difficulty as strenuous as you can manage. Don't be afraid to lose, and whatever you do, DON'T SAVE SCUM!!!

I've beat Pyre this Monday and wow... this game really messed with me.
I knew I needed to write a review but I couldn't write it on the same day.
If you want to play a game with very well built characters and dive into a completely new world and mythology, this game is rich in it!
Each character will touch you in certain way and the decisions you gotta take are Always tough and all of them really matter!
I've never seen a game where even the lyrics of their soundtrack changes based on the choices you've made, that's insanely detailed, but if you already know Supergiant it won't be a surprise to you.
I hightly recommend this game for people who love Reading, love a visual novel because even though it has gameplay moments full of action, the gameplay is only 20% of the game, the other 80% is Reading na AMAZING STORY and great world building!
The gameplay works as if it were a sport game which it isn't! Its a rite ceremony full of rules and traditions that should be respected and you are the reader who should guide your fellow triumvirate to their freedom through the victory in these rites.
You can play with tons of characters in total, cause the game also has a versus mode where you can play against CPU or with a friend in local multiplayer, there is no online multiplayer.
You can work on several builds with them, lots of strategy if you are into it, each character plays differently and they have certain sinergy with each other.
I won't say the number of characters you can use in the story because I don't wanna mess with your experience, I hightly recommend to finish the story before you touch the versus mode, so you don't take any spoiler.
And about the story, here is where this game shines! Again, don't worry, I won't give you any spoiler.
In a world where reading is forbidden, you get exiled to the downside because of it.
You learn that the only way to regain your freedom is through a ceremony that happens from time to time when the stars align in the sky, for it as a reader, your role here is to guide your fellow members of your triumvirate (your team) to prevail on the rites against other triumvirates. The world is rich in mythology, gods, beliefs, areas, different races, species and cultures, and charismatic characters that you'll probably keep for life!
The only negative thing I wanted to point out is about the limited in-game sprites the characters have.
They could've worked on some more variety of in-game sprites, for example, all the demons share the same sprite, since they are masked and wearing the rite clothes that hide their bodies, but even though they have different shape of horns, they still look the same under the mask, thats something that doesnt influence much in the game, but still, I think they could've invested some more time in making each sprite in the game unique...
But regardless of this, I love this game with all my heart, it was a blast to play it and it has a high replayability, I couldn't not write a review for it!

+ football/basketball gameplay part is great too. Each character is unique and useful
+ in this game you need to choose some variants and you feel the importance of your choice
