Soulcaster is a tactical action-RPG where you ommand epic heroes by summoning them to strategic positions. Use quick reflexes and strategy to fight through hordes of monsters, discover secrets, collect treasure and buy upgrades for your allies. Only you, Soulcaster can restore peace to the land!
Your three faithful allies have unique combat skills:

Amazing games. I played through both a few times before they made it to Steam. Very cozy atmosphere with enjoyable gameplay. I really appreciate the sound design as well. Hope we'll see a part 3!
These games are really fun. I hope other games draw inspiration from them.
i bought these back on the 360 as a teenager and loved it. its just as good all these years later.
This is a good game, hard but not unfair. I recommend it.
This is a unique game that the creator clearly put love into. I love the retro feel while still being innovative with gameplay and level design.
Super fun, very original RPGish-RTSish-puzzleish game with a lot of flexibility in how you play. If you are like me, no matter how many times you play it you go back to maxing out Shaedu and trying to utilize him exclusively no matter the circumstance. Getting all the steam achievements seems to be broken for me, but I will live with it as this game is fantastic.
I wouldn't call this Tower Defense or Dungeon Crawler even though it looks like it.
Each mission/level you have one small area you can move around in, and you have seconds to do so (split seconds later levels). You can summon 3 stationary heroes, your towers. Warrior, archer, and bomb thrower. Each with their limited abilities.
The thing is, this all happens EXTREMELY fast. You can go through a whole level in what seem like seconds. Strategy of going into a room and putting a warrior at the door is about as much strategy as there is.
Okay concept and fun enough for an hour maybe. Unless you love action extremely fast games. Neither of which I associate with dungeon crawlers or tower defense.
Is the concept of the game good, yes.. but it just doesn't work.
After a while it became a Grind Fest of just trying to RNG beat a level in "Special Mode".
Did I beat part I YES, did i beat part 1 on hard YES, did i beat all challenges in part 1 YES.... but to play PART 2, I to go to the library menu to start the game. This gave me the option to play part 2. Good luck with that only 2% & 1% of all individuals have beaten the "Special Modes'.
There is almost no story, you do have to learn each map but even still I enjoyed the first 4 hours of game play after that it was just me trying to get achievements which I failed at
Nice story told through simple gameplay.
Only thing I do dislike that enemy spawns too close to you.
This game was under my radar for a while now and I'm grateful it got ported to steam, otherwise I wouldn't have had the chance to buy it on the now defunct Xbox Live Indie Marketplace. I've been putting it off when I got it on steam, but when I sat down to play it, I found the game to be very much enjoyable. This game is a lot like fire emblem in that you try and position your units in such a way that you don't get hurt and you deal more damage to stave off the waves of enemies rushing you down. It's all about creating choke points and making it hell for the baddies to get you. The game is a perfect mix of strategy with a bit of action, since the player has some degree of control in both laying down one of three different units and controls a wizard that can run around or use scrolls to get out of hairy situations.
The game has a lot of replay value in trying to reduce the amount of summons you use to beat levels or foregoing using upgrades. I only died once on my first playthrough and it took me about an hour and 30 minutes to beat. As a short, self-contained experience the 5 dollar price point is well-worth the admission. As a game, I wish I had played it sooner. I highly recommend this game to people that want a strategy game like fire emblem or (maybe) advanced wars, but with a real-time kick.
I bought this game largely because it came from the makers of Escape Goat, and I wasn't disappointed! Definitely a steal at $5.
This game is like a mix of Tower Defense and Gauntlet. It's fast, fun, and simple to learn. Reasonable amount of content considering the price. I'd highly recommend it.
Soulcaster I & II takes the tower defense genre in a different way.
Keeping it short, the gameplay's fun, the music's fine, I did really enjoy one song from Soulcaster Part II, but the rest isn't memorable. I gotta say I enjoyed the fact that each statue could converse and that this simple game was accompanied by some kind of plot/story, but it's nothing to go home about.
I can't give this game a positive review due to broken achievements. There are two achievements that requires you to clear all challenge rooms (special maps unlocked after finishing the game), but yet, these cannot be achieved at all as they haven't been coded in. I'll update this review if it ever gets fixed.
Great little game * not TD * worth the $$
Fun little tower defense esque game. The gimmick is instead of building some buildings preventing enemies from getting from A to B but instead you control a character who runs around a map being chased by enemies and you build towers to defend yourself
This game is fantastic - by all means a hidden gem! Retro art with Dungeon Crawler + Tower Defense? Um.. Heck yeah! It's everything the trailer/screenshots tease and more. Definitely worth every penny and then some! I look forward to seeing more from this developer. :)
(revised)
This game's spin on the tower defense genre is that you are a moving target and can only summon "towers" at your current location. There's a limited number of them you can have at the same time and they're not invulnerable. These aspects allow for for some interesting gameplay, including "running battles" not seen in more static TD games.
Much like with every other MagicalTimeBean game you get a great soundtrack and a fair amount of bonus challenges.
This is a game, or rather two games, by the creators of the Escape Goat series, which while in a different genre are a pair of games I'd recommend wholeheartedly. Soulcaster actually came out before Escape Goat, and like it was available on the Xbox Live Arcade, but unlike it had quite a long wait through greenlight. It's finally here, and pretty worth the wait, I think.
You play as a nameless wizard on a journey to...do something. It's not explained right away, but on the way he bumbles across an area protected by monsters guarding the statue of an ancient warrior, Shaedu the Archer. She lends him her aid to help him survive. Not long after you find Ajax the Warrior and Bloodfire the Bomber; you'll need the help of all three to survive your journey.
Soulcaster is sort of a mix between an old-school dungeon crawler and a tower defense. You're presented with levels either one screen long or big enough to be miniature dungeons, each with a set amount of waves that spawn in when you pass a certain threshold, step on marked tiles, or just kill enough of the previous enemies. Shaedu can shoot enemies in her line of sight, but can't fire through allies or cover. Ajax can only hit what's next to him, but has a higher amount of health and can hold down choke-points extremely well, but can't take much punishment from the back. Finally, Bloodfire can throw bombs past allies for area damage, but is quite fragile and explodes when killed, which has friendly fire.
At the start you can put down three of them total, which can include multiples of the same hero; to unlock more you'll need to visit the merchant, where you can also buy upgrades for all your heroes. Unlocking a fourth and fifth slot is expensive, but a good investment, as the game wastes no time getting difficult. You can move around as the wizard while fighting is going on, and recalling your heroes before they die heals them completely, so you'll often need to make some snap decisions and reposition yourself. Collecting potions gives you a full heal if the wizard's life hits zero, and finding scrolls gives you a bomb that hits every enemy on the screen, but if you're surrounded without one you may as well restart the level and save yourself some time. It feels like a puzzle game at times, and it is fair about its challenge.
Like Escape Goat, it seems like both games might be short and sweet, with some other reviews noting both chapters can be finished in about two hours each. There is a hard mode and some challenge rooms available for each game to increase that a bit, but they're still not huge games and aren't intended to be. It seems like the developers, Magical Time Bean, are working on Soulcaster III at the moment, and I don't doubt they'll keep up their track record.
These were the best games ever made for the Xbox Live Indie Arcade and now they're available on Steam! Total playtime for each game is under 2 hours, so they're great single-session strategy games. Don't let the simple graphics fool you, the strategy is deep and engaging. And the second installment only builds on an already strong premise with new scenarios and challenges (and updated graphics).
I'd recommend these games for anyone, but especially fans of tower defence, RPGs and real-time strategy games.
Good game. GREAT music.
A huge amount of fun, simple yet innovative and addictive.
